I watched this movie a few days ago only because Amber Heard is in it and I'm happy to say that she did not disappoint. The movie itself, generally speaking, is subpar as far as stoner comedies go but the performances of Heard (as AngieI watched this movie a few days ago only because Amber Heard is in it and I'm happy to say that she did not disappoint. The movie itself, generally speaking, is subpar as far as stoner comedies go but the performances of Heard (as Angie Anderson), Rosie Perez (as Carol), and Danny McBride (as Red) were outstanding. As for James Franco, his performance as Saul Silver was, to put it bluntly, a good argument for why he has no business at all doing comedy. And it's perhaps because of this poor performance by Franco that Seth Rogen (as Dale Denton) did not manage to come across as funny as one may have expected.

The reason I found Heard's performance particularly outstanding was because of her uncanny ability to balance the naivete in Angie with a seriousness and sense of responsibility that speaks to the multidimensional nature of girls of Angie's age. I also found her dynamic with Rogen's character and with Angie's parents to have been fun to watch. Additionally, when one compares Heard's performance in this movie with those in the movies that she had done in the prior years since she began her acting career in 2004, it's undeniable how much growth as an actress she displays in it. And, I found it interesting and an attestation to her directorial abilities that it was Heard that came up with the "hold my shorts" idea in the scene where Angie and Dale meet for the first time in her school. I mean, that move does a lot to increase tension and comedy in the scene.

As for Rosario Perez's performance, I think that it's highly underrated because her performance, together with Danny McBride's, were the only ones that managed to give me some good solid laughs throughout the movie. That said, one thing that I do not like about the movie is its glamorization or normalization of the sexual exploitation and abuse of girls by much older men. Indeed, Heard herself seems to have found this problematic as one notices from her discomfort whenever the Angie-Dale relationship is raised during her promotional interviews for the movie. I also didn't like the movie's glamorization of the American drug culture (a problem with most stoner comedies no doubt), particularly among school-going children. Its poor racial and gender representations were also an issue for me.

Despite these problems, I choose to give the movie an 8 just because of Heard's performance and notable contributions to it as well Perez's and McBride's unexpectedly awesome performances.… Expand

The first half of this movie is hilarious. Unfortunately, it completely runs out of gas and the second half is unbelievably dull and drawn out. If it had been half its length, this could have been a very good movie.

Besides a few funny moments, "Pineapple Express" is a pretty weak movie. Seth Rogen and James Franco,have done better comedies together, but when there is nothing better to watch or do, I guess you could give "Pineapple Express" a try...

Off-the-wall, odd, absurd, and delightful, Pineapple Express is an over-the-top stoner comedy with on point comedy, comedic timing, and great acting from James Franco. Off-the-wall, odd, absurd, and delightful, Pineapple Express is an over-the-top stoner comedy with on point comedy, comedic timing, and great acting from James Franco. From beginning to end, the film is an absolute riot. I typically detest comedy, but this one worked perfectly. The cast had great chemistry with one another and though the characters, plot, and film are absolutely the dumbest I have seen in a while, the energy and aesthetic of the film are undeniably infectious. James Franco turns in a characteristically charismatic performance and really steals the show as a drug dealer who is absolutely hysterical. He has phenomenal one-liners and comedic timing that leave you in stitches repeatedly, though the cast does. I never expected to actually come away liking this film. Yet, here I am. Pineapple Express is an absolute riot with a solid plot, likeable characters, and terrific comedy writing.… Expand

Now, I had always heard "Pineapple Express" was a brilliant blend of genres, and that's what it is - a great stoner comedy that successfully blends buddy-action elements into it's story. The script was hilarious, as it's written by Seth Rogen himself and fellow successful screenwriter Evan Goldberg. The comedic elements written into said script ,although low-brow and often dark, came off as very breezy and ended up being one of the key factors of appeal for the film. Though the best part about the film, for me, was the really believable chemistry between James Franco and Seth Rogen. The two have worked together before on the cult television series "Freaks And Geeks", and their real-life friendship transfers very beautifully on film. Surprisingly enough, the movie also featured a sufficient amount of thrills and action - especially towards the end. Overall, I found "Pineapple Express" to be a delightfully funny buddy-stoner-action-comedy that brought the laughs and surprises in shovelfuls.… Expand

Pineapple Express is really funny. A lot of the humor comes from Seth Rogan who does a great job with the material he’s given especially when he has to shout and overreact. James Franco is surprisingly funny too as the drug dealer and him andPineapple Express is really funny. A lot of the humor comes from Seth Rogan who does a great job with the material he’s given especially when he has to shout and overreact. James Franco is surprisingly funny too as the drug dealer and him and Rogan have good chemistry together. I also enjoyed the other characters such as the cops. The best humor for me came whenever the film got really raunchy especially during the fight scenes, which were always really violent and gorey. If I were to criticize the film though there were a few isseus I had. Red wasn’t in the movie a lot but that’s more the poster leading me to believe he would play a bigger role in the film than he actually did. Also, some scenes in the movie dragged and were not that funny and at other times the humor got a little too stupid for my tastes. The film also does the annoying cliché where two friends get into an argument for no reason and then break up, which is annoying not only because of how out of nowhere the argument is but because you know what is going to happen they will mope and dope and then they’ll get back together. Finally, the film was a little too similar to Evan Goldberg’s Superbad in that it features two guys who get into a jam involving them on a crazy adventure and on the run form the police, there is a side plot involving one or more hilarious police characters, police cars get destroyed, the climax features one character carrying another away from a building and there is emphasis on something that is considered wrong with Superbad’s being underage sex and Pineapple Express’ being marijuana.… Expand

The genius but absurdity that comes with Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg is now a welcome relief to the cinema, breathing life into buddy movies and creating one of the funniest drug-related films in recent memory.
Seth Rogan plays Dale, whoThe genius but absurdity that comes with Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg is now a welcome relief to the cinema, breathing life into buddy movies and creating one of the funniest drug-related films in recent memory.
Seth Rogan plays Dale, who teams up with his drug dealer pal Saul, played by James Franco, who puts a very new and hilarious performance as the unorthodox dealer, who must go on the run with Dale after Dale witnesses a murder, a simple premise, with plenty of drug use, realistic and observational comedy where the humour borders on obscene and absurd. While the plot does offer serious turns in tone, it's the 'bromance" and chemistry between Franco and Rogen that keeps the film ticking on, with the usual suspects involved, gunfights, drug war and Seth Rogan using references to other films and celebrities to defuse a serious situation. The title is where the trouble of the film starts, a rare form of marajuana that Saul gets his hands on, but manages to reach Ted (Gary Cole), a dangerous man working with a corrupt cop Where the film truly shows strength is its visual stimuli and situations it creates for our characters to seize the opportunity to make us laugh, smashing a guys head into a wall, putting the same person through his own sink, a dealer who needs to put on hip hop music to get into his dealing 'zone', but turns it back to soulful music when his buyers have left.
If people aren't satisfied from the drug abuse angle, because lets face it these guys are high for the most part of the film, they should be satisfied with the comedy on offer, its nice to see the diversity that Franco has to offer, and also how he can fit into the Seth Rogan 'friend' routine, where these guys just talk to each other as if they aren't filming, but just sitting having a drink. Also making a hilarious turn is Danny McBride, who simply wants to have a group of pals to hang out with, its a clever way to make the film more approachable and relatable in hilarious fashion.
One of the most irreverent but bang on funny films of its time, counting to parody many films of the genre but managing to use its own wit against them.… Expand

The only memorable actor is the weed Dealer James Franco, who played an amazing part! This movie is in my top 5. The first time i saw this movie, I watched it 3 times in a row and laughed non-stop every time. The jokes are side splitting, the action is exciting and funny, and as a casual weed smoker; incredibly realistic script.

I don't smoke (does that matter?), I particularly don't like stoner movies, and I never liked any of the Cheech & Chong movies (sorry C&C fans!), so I watched this movie with the notion that it would flat out suck. Guess what? Guess what? I thoroughly enjoyed it. Rogen was somewhat dull, and I would've liked to see someone else play his role, but Franco played his part perfectly. Some lines were so random and ridiculous that I couldn't help but to think if the writers were high when writing the script. There were some parts that kind of dragged and were completely over the top, but I still liked it nonetheless. All in all, a great movie.… Expand

A great movie if you have a positive mental association with marijuana. A funny movie if you are neutral to the topic. Probably a poor choice if you disdain hippies and drug use. Mostly realistic but a hair corny or unrealistic at a couple points.

Very mediocre. It seemed as if they had no real script and just "winged it" through this whole movie. There are many strange occurances that defy logic and the characters. Did not Hot Fuzz parody this type of bad buddy flick? Not funny or clever. Has a lot of physical comedy and lots of action. Two stoners bond after being chased by an incompetent bad guy. Movie sucks even if stoned.

Over-rated. I expected this movie to be as hilarious as Old School or Superbad, and it was nowhere near as funny. The trailer is funnier than the movie. I have problem with Apatow films..or the ones he produces.Either they are very good ( which he is usually the case if he directs them ! ) or just plain bad.Infact some of his produced films just seem to lose the normal pace and keeps I have problem with Apatow films..or the ones he produces.Either they are very good ( which he is usually the case if he directs them ! ) or just plain bad.Infact some of his produced films just seem to lose the normal pace and keeps lingering on crappy lenghty conversations which just bores the viewers to death. This was the case so many times with Pineapple Express.I wanted to like this film ..so bad..seriously.Why ? Coz I had so much expectations.But this was a badly made film. There were moments..but thats all..just a few moments.So few genuinely funny scenes.I am tired of Hollywood churning out crude and stupid humour as majot USP's of a comedy production. Thats why may be so many so called 'comedy' movies are being made and so few actually succeeds and stays in the viewer's memory. Pineapple Express is just so boring and uninteresting that you feel that the two hours you are spending on this sh*t you will never get back in your life. This movie does not deserve such a high rating.Its just plain bland and bad !!!!!!!!!!!!!!...Yawwwnnn....I feeling drowsy even writing the review for this crap Apatow production !!!!...Just two stars for one funny scene of Seth Rogan's conversation with his girlfriend over the phone where they both get mushy !!!!!!!!!!!… Expand

The humour in this movie can be pretty subtle, but once you pick up on the feel of the film, it becomes a comedy on a separate level from other comedies. Disappointing. I guess i was expecting more than the movie was aver designed to be, but a drawn out very vague verging on non existent plot is its main downfall. I cannot see how people say this is a good movie. This is the only Seth Rogan movie I haven't liked. An instant classic, I hate slapstick, but this so well done, I was laughing until I couldn't breath the whole through. I don't know why this got so low scores, the whole theator was going crazy when I saw it.

Wow. I can not begin to explain the hilarity of this movie. I was sitting in the theater, laughing so hard that tears were rolling down my cheeks. It's certainly not a *bad* movie; there are several good yuks and memorable lines. But, as a whole, it was pretty disappointing. Was their test marketing group was a bunch of stoners? Even if it was, some highly enlighted viewer must have wondered what the whole girlfiend/girlfriend's family thread was about. As a buddy movie, Seth, James Franco and Danny McBride (Red) make a funny team. The final scene is one of the film's best. Had this not been a Seth Rogan/Judd Apatow collaboration, "Pineapple Express" would have much less than what it is. They both bring unique creative talents to this film and I hope their partnership keeps going. Despite this average effort, even a less-than-superb Apatow/Rogan project is better than 95% of the other crap in theraters these days!… Expand

There is no jonah hill in this movie yelling things i dont want to hear every time im about to laugh. just a very convincing, lovable james franco. Seth Rogen does have a tendency of playing socially retarded jewish stoners in every movie, but in this film, he does it on a much less exagerrated note, thoughfully giving franco the well deserved spotlight. this movie obviously wasn't aiming for realism (One character survives five bullet wounds and an explosion), but the hand to hand combat scenes are funny and somewhat relatable, who hasn't used there dust vaccum as a weapon? Yes i will agree the " action" is mostly boring and caused the movie to slow dowm=n in some parts, but this movie is about comedy, and the sweet joy of watching awkward aquaintances become best friends.… Expand
