A darkly disturbing tale with an underlying message about loss and the reality of death. Tense, good script and good performances from all involved. One of the better horror movies I've seen of late.

The mood and atmosphere that is set up here superceded the flawed use of constant exposition and the several other flaws. I began to appreciate this film as time wore on. Overall a low 7 a B.

"Sometimes dead is better", you said it John Lithgow, sometimes dead is better. Stephen King's IT was such a raving success Hollywood might just have caught on to the fact that done properly, King will rake in the money. So let's bring out"Sometimes dead is better", you said it John Lithgow, sometimes dead is better. Stephen King's IT was such a raving success Hollywood might just have caught on to the fact that done properly, King will rake in the money. So let's bring out the endless stream of remakes, next on the list is Pet Sematary. Arguably King's darkest book, I know if it could give me nightmares then it has to be terrifying and after seeing what they've done with IT then Pet Sematary should take its place among all the other great horrors. The 1989 original wasn't anything special and it has not aged well but now there should be no reason why this remake can't be a terrifying horror, so can someone please tell me how in 2019 they got this film so spectacularly wrong?

Dr. Louis Creed (Jason Clarke), his wife Rachel (Amy Seimetz) and two children move from the big city into rural Maine. And in proper horror movie cliché fashion they discover a mysterious burial ground deep in the woods near their new home and tragedy ensues. Now the trailer may have shown the next series of events but I'm not going to mention it as I consider it a spoiler, all I'll say is avoid the trailer if you haven't already. What can I say about Pet Sematary? It's not scary, it has no atmosphere and I hated the ending. The acting isn't terrible but that's about the only good thing I can say. John Lithgow can do no wrong, Jason Clarke and Amy Seimetz are doing their best but that doesn't change the fact that it's a horror movie that won't scare you. The jump scares are endless but you can see them coming a mile away, so not once did I actually jump. Part of its failure has to be due to the movies own trailer. You know that tiny preview that's supposed to give you a taste. A TASTE of what the film is about. Not a giant chomp of the film. Not every major plot point, twist, and death. I don't know enough about the process to know whose job this is but whoever you are, damn son you messed up. Far too many movie trailers are guilty of showing too much, to the point where many people avoid trailers altogether, although this isn't always possible. Believe me when I say if you've any interest in seeing Pet Sematary at all (but maybe you should reconsider that decision) and have yet to see the trailer, avoid at all costs because it's essentially a summary of the entire film.

There are some books that just won't translate well onto the big screen and maybe Pet Sematary is one of them. The first adaptation wasn't great and this is somehow worse. I know a lot of King's films have not been adapted well but I also know that there are exceptions to this and Pet Sematary 2019 should have been one of them. A giant disappointment, not recommended, read the book instead.

The pacing was all over the place--slow as molasses in some parts and then jumping ahead leaving me to make assumptions about what had happened. I really didn't feel invested in any of these characters, which all seemed to lack important character development. In spite of that, the acting was better than good. The suspense level was non-existent and I felt the tension was minimal. Very disappointed. If anything good has come out of my experience, it is the fact that after seeing the disappointing original film and seeing this disappointing film, I've decided that maybe it's time I just read the book. It manages to build good moments of tension, the performances are a thousand times better than the ones from the original one, in that they were very mediocre. The film was excellent (I would put a note of 9) but in the final act it deflates and goes to the trash. Typical horror movie that has all the clichés of today's cinema that will go unnoticed and nobody will remember it. The last 3 minutes are a disaster. I keep the original. Expand

Antes de que mi comentario genere discrepancias, la versión de 1989 recibió peores críticas que esta, la cual fue más polarizada pero equilibrada al mismo tiempo y no solo por los críticos, sino que también por los espectadores.

Anyone who cherished the original or hews to the book might be upset by some of the plot point reworking. There's a profusion of jump scares and some of them work, but when it's time to create real suspense, this directing duo (Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch) falls short. It does manage to maintain a sense of dread and the performances are strong, but it breaks no new ground for the genre (pun intended), is only mildly scary and really didn't need to be dug up again (pun again). It was almost completely faithful toPet Sematary was my first Stephen King story and while I have my quibbles with it the book retains a special place in my heart. Where the first adaptation failed me was in both the acting and directing. It was almost completely faithful to the source material, but was so amateurish in execution that I have a love-hate relationship with it. I respect it's fidelity, but can't help cringing whenever anyone opens their mouth or when I witness a scene that common sense would have dictated be shot at night.

Thus the prospect of this movie had me excited as it offered a chance to see one of my favorite works of gothic horror brought to life in a more competent manner. For the most part it succeeded. This version takes more liberties, but it's so much better made and performed that it's easily the more watchable of the two. Yet, I still remain unconvinced that Pet Sematary can ever really work as a film. This remake bypasses all of the character development and drama to get to the bloody final act as quickly as possible. There's no passion put into the build-up. A shame because that's where the novel shined. Plus it just makes this movie largely a bore as it's this material that makes up the majority of the running time. However, whereas the book took a serious nosedive in quality the moment Louis Creed set out to resurrect that which should have remained dead, this adaptation finds new life in that previously uncompelling territory.

The directors show a level of enthusiasm for the more violent content that's largely missing from the rest of the movie. The film really does get better the closer it draws to a close. Weak jump scares aside, there are some genuinely creepy and tense moments. The tone is incredibly bleak and the new ending is much more satisfying than the one Stephen King came up with all those years ago. In the end it's not enough to save Pet Sematary from mediocrity, but at least it ensures that it does get interesting to watch at some point.

It's hard to really fault the people behind this for trying to condense so much of the novel's less traditionally exciting material down in order to focus on the more gory and supernatural elements that actually sell tickets. The problem is that they only make up a small part of the source material. Which makes me question if it's legitimately possible to make an enjoyable Pet Sematary adaptation that stays true to what the bulk of the book had to offer considering it's largely comprised exposition and build-up. Ultimately, I feel this was a step in the right direction, but the fact that it favors generic scare tactics over staying true to the heart and soul of the story shows that we still have a long way to go.

The original 1989 pet sematary film is a very solid film and captured King's book decently, but this new one gives it deeper emotional depth and endless unsettling atmosphere. There are some huge ambitious changes to the story that some purists are unaccepting of, though honestly work more effectively after you give it more thought. The plot follows mostly the same other than those altered aspects. However they didn't exactly go into some of the intricate details of the backstory/showing the burial ground/wendigo as well as they could've though it was touched on somewhat.

Jason Clarke is completely dedicated to the role and carries the momentum well. Jete Lawrence gives an outstandingly delicate/devious dichotomy performance as well and will be a fantastic actress. John Lithgow was also very solid as the new Judd. The camerawork is flawless and builds the tension extremely. The wilderness settings/visuals where the sematary and ancient burial grounds are were portrayed spectacularly. They definitely had an eye for detail and created the set with passion in order to paint a picture of what source material imagined. The soundtrack was also fantastic in adding to the overall tone.

Overall I think this film is suffering from more stubborn purists that are afraid to accept change, so they hate the film illogically. This is easily one of the most emotional horror's I've ever seen and has been way too slandered out of nostalgia.

For me, one of the hardest things to do is to write a review for a remake, when I've already seen the original film. How is it that you can review it or even watch it, without making immediate comparisons to the original? For those of youFor me, one of the hardest things to do is to write a review for a remake, when I've already seen the original film. How is it that you can review it or even watch it, without making immediate comparisons to the original? For those of you unfamiliar with the story, Dr. Louis Creed and his family move to a small town in the woods of Maine. They buy a huge property, which in the back has an old pet cemetery, but beyond that lies something far more sinister, an ancient Indian burial ground, where it is said, those buried there, can return. Pet Sematary was a great film and an even better book, but it's the kind of story where there isn't much you can leave out, and there isn't a whole lot you can change. That being said, the majority of the film is almost a shot for shot remake of the original, begging the question, what's the point? The ending is where they change things up a bit and does it make the story better? That's for you to decide. Personally, I always loved this film and had no problem with it being modernized a bit. The cast wasn't bad, but certainly not as good as the original. The only upgrade in that respect was John Lithgow playing the role of the next door neighbor, Jud, a definite improvement over Fred Gwynne. If you've never seen the original film, go see this one, it's more modern and like it's predecessor, it does an excellent job of bringing book to screen. If you have seen the original, you may or may not think of it as an upgrade. It all comes down to the ending, which I did enjoy, still I can't decide if it's better than what was originally written. And though the overall turnout of this Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer-directed effort remains in the realms of mediocrity, you can still sense the inherent brilliance that existed in the source material. A whole lot of the movie is steeped in this really dreadful sense of moral ambiguity that makes for an intriguing watch. And though others found themselves bored within the first half of this, it was the dramatic irony of knowing what's about to happen that kept me so rapt. The ending of this work, however, takes an errant left turn into anti-climactic ineffectiveness, with the upshot of things conjuring up sour memories of "The Mist" rather than other, more palatable Stephen King stories. Call me old-fashioned, sure, but I don't mind a downer of an ending if it makes sense within the context of the story at hand, leading the audience to believe that there was only one way this story could end. Add the fact that the ending attempted here is a noted departure from the book's, and you're ultimately left scratching your head. Expand

It's clear these guys want the viewer to expect their expectations subverted... but they don't actually have any good tricks beyond the okey-doke itself. Several times, the movie seems to pull a head fake and scream "ha! fooled you! That's not what happens at all!" Which is fun for a moment (more so if you saw '89,) until the actual follow-through throws it all away by being so lame it's lämé. One major twist I welcomed with open arms, but by the time it played out I was wondering how the heck I ever thought this was a good idea. If this movie was a basketball player, it would continuously cross you out of your shoes before immediately turning the ball over. The final shot of the movie scores a few points with me, it is a top-notch 30 seconds. But the stuff that led up to it... meh, I say. MEH!! Expand

The cinematography was bland, the setting felt phoney, the child acting was terrible, and the amount of times the same exact loud truck driving by jump scare happened was ridiculous.

Thankfully all the tweaks and turns feel natural. I just wish they were even bolder, and would have gone even further into those mysterious Maine woods. Still, I really really want to watch Pet Sematary (2019) again come October/November, in the comforts of my own home preferrably (I feel like it's that kind of movie). As far as modern remakes go, I'd say it joins the ranks of The Hills Have Eyes (2006) and The Last House on the Left (2009).

Btw, the taglines are sadly as uninspired as they get: "Sometimes dead is better" (IMDb), or simply just odd: "Wait why did they spell it wrong?" (Letterboxd). I would have been pleased as Punch with "Back AGAIN by popular(?) demand", or something more distinct to make it its own.

P.s.: speaking of Pet Sematary II (said no one...ever), there are a few references to Lambert's bonkers sequel. So that's fun!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Good movie.Had some scary moments and I liked how everything was well explained before we got to the scary moments while still holding some tense to it.Ellie was moderately scary, she did her role well and her skills with the knife are admirable.Unfortunately Louis was a dumb character and i did not care for him 1 moment. You can feel his pain but his overall dumbness in the movie makes you care so less about him that i was glad that he died at the end of the movie. There are some other dumb moments in the movie as well. The story of Rachel is creepy the first time, but the other times it is just used as a cheap jumpscare.I would have given this movie a 6 but the ending was very good because i actually felt grief for Gage.It is so brilliant because he is very innocent ,wanted to go home in the entire movie and has to suffer from scary visions. You almost forget about him in the movie but I think it worked to make the ending even more powerful.I have not seen a horror movie were i actually felt sad so props to the makers of this movie.Could have a classic if it had avoided some horror clichés and if the main character wasn't such a dumb ass.But overall still one of the better horror movies that i have seen. The first part of this film was slow, the next part was intense and interesting and felt right, and the last part just took the film in a whole different direction. Now the first two parts I can understand being the way they are but I think the third part should’ve just been added to the second part. The editing in this film in some section was choppy and didn’t transition properly. When there was an intense scene it would just cut to a happy go lucky scene. While in other cases it just didn’t add up as if they wrote the script and didn’t realize there was no proper transition between scenes. At least the film had beautiful shots to look at. All the cinematography and settings were stunning and you can tell that Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer, the directors of the movie, took their time to make sure that everything looked right in the shots. Now I have to talk about the acting and really all I can say is that it is better than the original movie but at the same time I think a few changes to the cast could have helped the movie out. Jason Clarke and John Lithgow, who plays Jud Crandall, probably were the best ones in the cast, well other than Lucas Lavoie who plays Gage Creed who was just cute. They brought the most out to help carry this movie and make it interesting. It is safe to say though that John Lithgow did a better job than Jason though. Towards the end, Jason just did a complete 360 with his character. In the end, Pet Sematary is a good with lots of flaws in it. Whether you take it seriously or not you’ll still enjoy it. Expand

The Pet Sematary remake is a fairly scary film, but what I wouldn't call a standout.

The frightening moments are effective. Directors Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer have a good eye for visuals, be it making the forests of Maine look haunting or more stylistic visuals such as the pet sematary. Yeah, the sematary is a little over-the-top in it's sinisterness, but it does stick with you.

Sadly, the cinematography doesn't match the quality of the visuals. Some transitions are choppy and the camera can be stagnant at the moment.

As for the story, it's just okay. The spooky moments are when it shines. The exposition, however, can be dull at moments. Though I understand the reason why: what makes the general story of Pet Sematary so popular is the human element and backstory. I give the writers credit for trying. The dull moments aren't helped any by leads Jason Clarke and Amy Seimetz, who are both low-energy.

The movie deviates from the book and original film by having the daughter brought back to life instead of the son. The evil girl thing has been done before and this doesn't really bring anything new to the table. (Actress Jeté Laurence does do a good job of being creepy.) Still, I can see why it's easier to pull off an killer evil girl than a killer evil toddler visually-speaking.

Best actor unsurprisingly is John Lithgow as the friendly neighbor Jud Crandall. But, he never is an equal for the first film's Fred Gwynne who made the rustic harbinger of the forbidden semi-iconic.

Overall, the film is okay. I recommend this to horror fans, but you don't need to see it right away.

It's not a bad movie, and it certainly has moments of genuine terror and suspense, and strong performances but sadly it is held back by a lengthy, plodding, and an exposition-heavy first half. By the time it finally kicks off, in contrast to the first half of the film, the later half feels rushed and over far too soon. Overall, I would say as far as Stephen King movies go, it's not the worst, but it never rises to the standard set by 2017's "IT". Expand

I really hoped this film would surprise me but with great sadness I have to say it didn't make it.

Pet Sematary doesn't even enter my top 20 of Stephen King's favorite novels and yet it's one of his most famous books.
Beyond the flaws in his prose, the general concept of that particular story makes it so attractive that I wasn't surprised at all to hear the plans of a remake.

And I really hoped it would be a good adaptation but honestly it seemed so inert and completely devoid of frights and horror, even when its atmosphere tries its best to try to induce terror.

And although many people and critics have said that the changes made to the plot don't affect the film the truth is that they actually do. Especially that Ellie is the one who dies instead of Gage.
The death and dark resurrection of Gage are more dramatic because he was only a little boy.
And also I cannot forgive them for omitting Timmy Baterman's story because that's the key moment of explaining what's in the Micmac cemetery and especially what Louis was going to provoke. It was a monumental error.

Pet Sematary is not the adaptation I expected and wanted. And it's definitely not one of Stephen King's best adaptations.

In my oninion the original Pet Sematary was a good movie, but it was flawed due to basically no character development. The original just didn't show me enough depth of character that allowed me to believe that a grown man would bury his child in that cemetery to bring them back from the dead. This version did that there was several flashbacks from the Mother's past about her sister that gave you some sympathy for her as the movie progresses. Where this move fails is the pacing. We can see that the director is trying to create suspense through longer drawn out scenes but it seems there could have been another method. Expand

A remake with technical and visual improvements, but that's basically it.

Although his writing is generally brilliant, not all of Stephen King's short stories are in fact attractive and interesting. As with all authors, there are smaller works in the middle of their writing and "Pet Sematary" is probably one of them. Even so, this did not prevent three adaptations from being made for the cinema. This film is precisely the third on the list, and the most recent, being a remake of the first, made in 1989. Personally, I found the original film average. It presents several improvements, mainly at a technical level thanks to the most modern technology and methods. But honestly I have some reservations about the script.

Being a remake, the script is very similar to the film of the Eighties: again, we have the story of the Creed family again, who moves to the quiet city of Ludlow, Maine, in order to disconnect themselves from the tiring routine of the great City. What they did not expect was that the road in front of their new home had so much truck traffic, which circulated at high speed and without much care. Nor did they expect to find an animal graveyard behind the house, which is presented to them by a friendly neighbor, Jud. The cemetery is a place created by the children of the surroundings, to bury their friends, many of them run over on the road. So far, nothing special. Weeks later, when Louis Creed, a doctor and family patriarch, is unable to save the life of a young man who dies at his hands after an accident, he is warned by the spirit of that same young man that he, as well as his family, are in danger . In fact, behind the house, there is also an ancient sacred place where the Indians buried their dead, but which was abandoned when it became a cursed place. A place where you shouldn't go and where the stony soil hides a cruel force, which Louis will discover over time.

The script is very similar to the 1989 film, and there are scenes that were even traced on carbon paper. However, besides this not being exactly original, it also makes the film predictable and boring for those who saw the oldest film. Of course, there are modifications here and there: at least one of the characters in the original film was removed and the script tried to put more emphasis on the character Rachel Creed, developing her traumas and internal conflicts to increase tension. These were positive changes, but on the other hand, the film does not seem to have much feeling: in the 1989 film, I felt that the film was creating an atmosphere of tension and suspense that worked satisfactorily. That was less noticeable here, and it's a shame, because then the film is not able to scare anyone.

The cast is decent, but it is not brilliant. The young Jeté Laurence, for me, was the actress who stood out the most, with a remarkable ability to act as an innocent and friendly girl and, quickly, turn into a totally different thing. Jason Clarke seems to me to be well enough, but he was not able to do better than Dale Midkiff did in the Eighties, in the same character. Amy Seimetz initially seemed quite bland, but it improved as her character became more neurotic and traumatized. John Lithgow did a satisfactory job, but no more.

At a technical level, the film is reasonably more appealing and interesting than its predecessor of the Eighties. It couldn't be any other way. Cinematography is frankly good, but still within the standard of today's films, with nothing that really surprises us. The visual and special effects are good, and the sets and costumes don't surprise us much. The look of animals and people who come back to life after dying was very well thought out and really leaves no doubt as to the perverse nature of what they become. The CGI effects were used discreetly, as well as the soundtrack, which is not noticeable.

Not bad, but not a patch on the book, and the new ending is awful

In Stephen King's celebrated oeuvre, his 1983 novel Pet Sematary (the misspelling is intentional) is something of a curio. Although reasonably well received at the time, critics have never considered it worthy of the kind of attention lavished on work such as The Shining, The Stand, The Dark Tower series, It, Misery, or The Green Mile. Fans of King, however, have long championed it as one of his most emotionally devastating and philosophically complex works, whilst King himself considers it the scariest novel he's ever written. And although on the surface, the plot is as schlocky as they come, buried underneath is an examination of grief and how it can compromise one's ability to act rationally.

Written by Jeff Buhler, from an initial script by Matt Greenberg, and directed by Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer, for me, much like It (2017), Pet Sematary doesn't really work. It's certainly better that Mary Lambert's 1989 filmic adaptation, but it pales in comparison to the novel. Granted, most films suffer when compared to a source text, but Pet Sematary, which relies far too heavily on jump scares, is especially disappointing in this sense insofar as it starts off very strongly, taking care to respectfully modernise the novel's themes and examine the characters' underlying emotions, before descending into absolute stupidity in the last act.

Dr. Louis Creed (Jason Clarke) and his wife Rachel (Amy Seimetz), their eight-year-old daughter Ellie (Jete Laurence), three-year-old son Gage (Hugo and Lucas Lavoie), and Ellie's beloved cat, Church relocate from Boston to Ludlow, Maine. When Church is found dead, the Creeds' neighbour, Jud Crandall (John Lithgow), shows Louis an ancient Mi'kmaq burial ground in the forest, with the power to resurrect the dead. After burying Church, Louis is stunned when the cat returns, albeit far more aggressive than he used to be. However, when a horrific tragedy befalls the family, Jud warns Louis not to return to the site. Louis, however, has no intention of heeding that warning.

The big change in the film is that it's Ellie and not Gage who is killed, and whom Louis decides to bring back. However, King himself approved the change, and personally, I think it improves the story - as in the novel, it's Ellie with whom Louis and Rachel have portentous conversations about what happens after we die, and having her be the one killed establishes a more coherent thematic through-line.

Much like the novel, the film is primarily focused on grief, and how it drives him to do something unspeakable. He's a man of science, who clashes with Rachel about what to tell Ellie regarding death - she wants to talk about an afterlife, he wants to focus on the finality of death as something natural. This is a smart choice by King, as Louis becomes the one who refuses to let death have the final word, with his conscious mind unable to accept the random tragedy that has befallen him.

And for about two-thirds of the runtime, the film deals reasonably convincingly with these issues. At least up to the point when it seems to forget about them entirely, as the third act descends into a ridiculously campy series of murders, attempted murders, and all round violence.

The last half-hour or so is as superficial and immature as anything in any King adaptation, and the new "twist" ending completely undercuts both King's original themes, and how well the film itself had handled those themes earlier on. I've no problem with filmmakers altering the end of a literary adaptation; the finale of Frank Darabont's The Mist (2007), for example, is completely different from King's novel, but it replicates the spirit of the original. The whole point of the end of Pet Sematary, however, is that Louis learns nothing from his experience with Gage. The tragedy is that, lost in madness and despair, he repeats his mistakes. The end of the film has none of this, with the final shot more of a silly "dun-dun-duuuun" moment.

The film also leaves out almost all of the backstory and mythology of the burial ground and the role of the Wendigo (an evil necromantic spirit from Algonquin folklore); Louis sees a picture of it in a book, but it's unnamed, and later, he thinks he sees something in the distance of the fog-shrouded forest, but that's as close as we ever get to it.

As a novel, Pet Sematary is a study of grief and childhood trauma first, a horror narrative second. Investigating our psychological reaction to death, the book probes how far we might go to ensure a loved one never leaves us. As a film, Pet Sematary seems to be charting a similar course, until it abandons this tack in favour of a shock-for-shock's sake ending. With an over-reliance on predictable jump scares, ultimately, what could have been a mature and emotionally affecting story gives in to the worst excesses of the genre.

Most Stephen King adaptations have been fantastic and there are so very very many of them. He still has dozens of great books awaiting a movie adaptation, so why do we keep getting these second rate remakes of existing adaptations?

I loved the 1989 original, it was an incredibly constructed genuinely great film so I was skeptical upon hearing about a remake. As usual, my fears were very justified.

Starring the ultra bland Jason Clarke this goes down different roads than both the book and the original, it teases following the source material multiple times then suddenly goes in a different direction. I didn't appreciate this at all, throughout the entire film I was waiting for it give me a reason for it's existence. It never did.

John Lithgow is a great actor and can consider me a fan, but for this role he's no Fred Gwynne. Fred Gwynne put in an iconic cult performance, Lithgow I'm sorry to say simply couldn't compare and his accent was terrible.
The movie is another example of needless senseless remakes/reboots that simply aren't needed. There are countless tales just begging to get the big screen treatment, so why do we keep getting force fed the same ones? And why are they consistently worse than the last?

Pet Sematary brings absolutely nothing of value to the table, it's an inferior adaptation just sparkly thanks to the higher budget. I'd rather watch the highly disappointing Pet Sematary 2 (1992) than this again.

Pet Sematary is an incredibly boring film. There were aspects I liked about the film but they get buried under this snooze fest. Most of the acting is pretty bad except from Jason Clarke and John Lithgow. Both do a good job but they don’t really bring anything new to the table. Jete Laurence and Amy Seimetz were pretty bad in this film. Clarke and Lithgow were able to make the terrible script work for them but Laurence and Seimetz fell victim to it. It also doesn’t help that their characters aren’t that great and aren’t fleshed out a lot. The make-up effects are pretty great when they are used but they aren’t used in scenarios where they should have been used. If someone gets hit by a huge trailer there probably should be a little bit of blood not no blood at all. It removes all tension from the scene. They could have just shown some blood and no body. They would have left it up to the imagination of the viewer to think about what that person's mangled body looked like. The music and cinematography are incredibly bland and generic. The music sounded like stock horror music and the cinematography was basic and boring. The film has a swamp set that they decided to use a green screen background for and it’s really noticeable. The editing is not terrible but it’s not good either. It just felt weird compared to the other films I have seen this year. The concept of Pet Sematary is definitely intriguing but this film takes that concept and makes it seem very dull. I was bored out of my mind when I was watching it and was on the verge of falling asleep. I need to watch the original version now to get this out of my mind. Overall, Pet Sematary has an interesting premise based on already existing material but the bad acting, bland cinematography, weak script, and just being uninteresting bring the film way down. Expand

A few minor mistakes doesn't stop Pet Semetary's successful attempt to be slightly more faithful to the novel and all new at the same time.

The best parts for me where the ones that involve the burial grounds, the scenery and music there just nails it, and is the only part I consider superior to the original one.

It has 2 main differences with the first adaptation, both of them are acceptable, however I thing baby cage in the original was a lot more terrifying.

The worst part is some extra plot details they add related to the mother, it just makes the movie drag at certain moments.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a pretty straight forward modernized version of a classic. (Also there’s a little nod to “IT”, during the last quarter of the movie)

This movie is straight up the middle, not groundbreaking and not wack either. They didn’t try to do anything crazy with the story, if this wasn’t a remake and this was an original movie/plot it would be just as good any other modern thriller/horror movie made in the last 5-10yrs. The only thing I didn’t like about this movie was a small character(s) flaw.... in the beginning, when the parents are discussing life/death/after life/god etc. and how to tell the daughter about that kinda stuff, the parents have two diff views (god and heaven and people looking down on you etc, and death is just...dead, nothing else.) and I’m like; really? Two 40something Married adults, with two kids and theyre still unsure about each others views on death and how to tell their NINE YEAR OLD daughter? They haven’t discussed death with a NINE YEAR OLD yet??? How does a nine year old, in 2019 not know how death works??? Not important to the movie at all, it was just a filler scene, just bugged me.

The movie was utterly suspenseful and horrifying during certain scenes, but I found myself a little disappointed by the end. A lot of the plot was underdeveloped, too many loose ends and the ending was a bit anti-climactic. Also, most of the movie was completely predictable after watching the trailer. You know exactly what's going to happen after seeing any trailer for the movie. However, it was well done and definitely worth a watch if you're looking to be creeped out. Expand

To sum up, it was an OK movie made from a GOOD book. 6.5/10 Expand

The author hasPet Sematary 2019 is a film I didn't know about until days before its release. Perhaps I was out of the loop on this one, but I was glad to hear that a new adaptation of one of Stephen King's works was hitting the big screen. The author has regarded Pet Sematary as his most disturbing work, so much so that he left it in a drawer for a long time and almost didn't publish it. I'm glad he did though, because this story has been a huge hit with fans ever since its original release in 1983.

Pet Sematary follows the Creed family, who move into a new house within Ludlow, Maine to revamp their life. There's Louis (the dad), Rachel (the mom), Ellie (the daughter), Gage (the son), and Church (the cat). Louis works at a hospital and hopes to escape dealing with the chaotic injuries of previous patients, while Rachel suffers personal issues following the death of her sister, Zelda.

Their next-door neighbor, Judd, is a welcoming old man who lives in isolation. He quickly befriends the family and partakes in fun dinner nights with them. Once the family cat is run over by a truck, Judd shows Louis the titular and misspelled "Pet Sematary," hidden within the nearby woods.

After Judd instructs Louis to bury Church within the cemetery, strange things begin happening. The cat returns to the family the next day, alive, but mean-spirited. His hair is all matted, his left eye is wounded, and he jumps at the chance to attack anyone who pets him.

As the events of the film play out, the Creed family is faced with their inner demons. Pet Sematary is not a happy film, and some of its main themes include dealing with grief and loss. There's a fair share of scares, and that damn cat steals the show in every scene he's in. Gore is not in abundance, but remains visceral in presentation and packs a walloping punch whenever it's on screen.

Problems with the film include the stupidity of the Judd character. He has previous experience dealing with the cemetery, so I'm not sure why he reveals its existence to Louis. The movie can also be slow at times. It takes a while to rev up to the climax and once it does, multiple events play out in rapid succession. This made the final 30 minutes feel rushed in my opinion. The overall look of the film is very drab and grey, a huge contrast to "It 2017" for example, which was a very colorful movie. Some might argue that the dull look contributes to the themes, however.

Overall, I enjoyed Pet Sematary. It's not the best of King's adaptations, but as far as some of his other book-to-screen transitions go, you could do a lot worse. Some may find it a bit on the slow side, but its subtext goes for the jugular and the atmosphere is effective enough.

The little girl and the cat were both incredibly creepy and really helped make this movie just that bit more unsettling. Amy Seimetz was also pretty good, but Jason Clarke was not. It's hard to blame him because his character is pretty flat — a doctor who is a very "classic" science person: all logic. The pacing of the movie is not that good. The first act of the movie was solid, it did a great job of making you feel uncomfortable — not quite at home. This movie struggles in the second act, where things really slow down and get incredibly boring (my friend fell asleep and a woman next to me went on her phone). However, the third act picks things up again and it really gets exciting. It also has a pretty dark and deep meaning. The finale of the movie really surprised me (as someone who had neither read the book nor seen the previous adaptation), and will definitely surprise you as well. Overall, this film does a pretty decent job at balancing deep and dark subjects with more exciting scares. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is the latest adaptation of Stephen King’s novel with the same name and that novel was considered to be the scariest and darkest of Stephen King’s bunch of novels. This novel had already been adapted once in 1989 and it was really dark, so much blood and a guy got his brain ripped but then it didn’t have good performances so I only rated that 5.9/10. It’s just bloody, not scary. Jason Clarke is great as Dr. Louis Creed, and then there’s Amy Seimetz who played Rachel, Louis’ wife. However, neither of their performances was my favorite, it was Jete Laurence as Ellie, their daughter. This movie was really challenging, especially when she came back to life, she needed a lot of darkness and her performance was impressive. Seimetz was great as well, it’s just that Jason Clarke didn’t have much to do in here. Seimetz’s character had a dead family member, her sister Zelda. We knew that she’s not the main character of the movie but she’s the one who stole the show, much better than Clarke and Laurence, but Laurence’s still my favorite. She’s just a kid. The performances were way better than the one in 1989. This movie had changed a few things the 1989 adaptation had. I was really, really disappointed with the trailers, they spoiled a lot of things, even the death, Ellie. They came with the line “Sometimes dead is better!” it was a bit of spoilers too but it wouldn’t be if you read the book or watch the 1989 movie. I only watched Pet Sematary in 1989 but didn’t read the book so I didn’t feel spoilt with the line. The 1989 movie was Gage who was crushed by the train, now it’s Ellie, it was spoilt in the trailer (C’mon!). Then I would think that Gage died would make the movie darker, but then 1989 one was (I told you) not dark. I wanted it that way because Church, something belonged to Ellie (the cat) is already dead so it had to be someone else. I really don’t read the book but, I heard the critics saying that this adaptation is darker than the book and I did find it full of darkness, especially in the end. I was familiar with horror movies so I wouldn’t be scared and then the jumpscare of Zelda falling shocked me. I was given Goosebumps. The performance was getting crazier and in the end, slash, slash and kill! The biggest problem in here was some parts of the beginning. It was kinda boring and the performances weren’t good. They just sat down and read, read, and read. I fell asleep at that part and I had to open again and again to understand what was happening that time but I kept falling asleep. Maybe the beginning was worse than I thought but in the middle and the end, I felt like they had tried better and better and it didn’t feel this movie was bad anymore. They really did well with the CGI and the cinematography. Full or darkness, a lot of bloody scenes (Louis and Ellie’s death were not bloody at all) and you could feel it being real. There’re also some disgusting parts like Ellie’s hair (after coming back from the grave) and Church’s fur (after coming back from the grave). They were…gross (and that’s what made the movie scary). This movie was banned from my country but I had found a way to watch it, the Internet (hehehe). Except from dramas like The Green Mile or The Shawshank Redemption and Stand By Me, Pet Sematary is one of the greatest Stephen King’s adaptations. Sometimes remade is better. Expand

Maybe I'm just too much of a fan of King's work to fully appreciate the changes made. Newcomers to King's work will definitely enjoy it more than a fan. John Lithgow is excellent as Jud but Jeté Laurence steals the entire movie with her performance. Jason Clarke and Amy Seimetz are forgetable at best. Clarke's Louis feels too much like a wet paper towel while I have an entirely different vision of the character. Most of my points went to set design, cinematography and Lithgow's and Laurence's acting. Enjoyable, but just not there. Expand

I never do that so I can’t say I’ve truly seen the film yet but the idea of grabbing drinks sounded much better than finishing this. With muddy cinematography, lame jump scares, and sluggish pacing, I found myself falling asleep multiple times before the story really kicked off (with the daughter dying). By the 3rd or 4th semi-truck jump scare, I knew that I had already checked out. Not a terrible film but certainly not memorable in any way.

The original movie had a better story, only it was lacking was proper execution. This remake lacked both. The acting was normal, the horror element was zero and creepiness was average. The movie was not properly connecting and fails to indulge the audience. Also, the writer changed a lot of things in the story and it just made story bad and less effective. What this movie was just a story which was trying to be a horror movie but failed miserably to become a horror movie.

Overall, I will not recommend this to you. Instead you should give try to the original.

It’s like so many other unimaginative remakes like Total Recall (2012), Robocop (2014) and A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010). There are whole sections of the film where nothing happens, just small amounts of character development. I’ll give them some credit, the characters are relatable, but they are dull!
