Great visuals and music. Good and simple story. But what is best in this movie and the most entertaining is its action sequences. Believe me, everyone one would love it.

After watching it I was shocked on how well it was put together. CGI was pretty good. I mean who doesn't like giant bad ass robots fighting these ugly looking aliens. Any kid would enjoy this movie. Maybe not little kids that might have nightmares over the aliens as they will be afraid to swim. Overall it was actually funny, interesting, action packed (except for the middle for like 30 minutes), but other than that it was well worth seeing. Go see it kids and whoever else. Whoever gave this movie under a 6 is a dumbass and/or don't have a sense of a kid side in them Expand

There are definitely someI was worried that this movie would be dumb, soulless like those other robot movies, but Del Toro fills Pacific Rim with a sense of wonder and awe, amazing visuals, and some characters that I actually cared about. There are definitely some cliches taken straight out of movies like Top Gun, and some of the dialogue is wooden or a little cringe inducing. And the characters don't have the most depth. But overall the story was told well and I found myself really rooting for the heroes to win at the end.

The real stars of this movies are the Jaegers, especially when they start bashing giant sea monsters.
They look absolutely spectacular, and have a real sense of weight and presence that made me go "wow", something a rarely experience in a movie. The monsters are very well done too. And when they clash with the Jaegers, it is just awe inspiring. Sadly, it was kinda hard to see the action at times as it fairly dark usually. Maybe it was the polarized glasses?

Del Toro's great visuals also extend to the sets which have a gritty, well used realness to them. Also, the score was cool and felt unique.

This movie doesn't challenge you mentally, or give you complex characters, or a smart story. But it has a big heart, is gorgeous to look at, and wants you to have fun and I had fun.

Pacific Rim is a example of how to do an Action flick right, with great characters, original concept and dark storyline. It Knows when it needs to throw explosions in your face at the right times without getting boring. Take notes Michal Bay

I will say the characters were kind of flat though, I don't think there was any development between any of them. And in regards to some of the lines, it was sometimes very difficult to tell what was being said. Whether that was due to my theater's speakers, I can't say.

A lot of the bad reviews stem from people bashing the movie due to its week story. The story is not what makes this movie great and in my opinion shouldn't be too harshly criticized. Instead of trying to make a riveting story about something so ridiculous as giant man-made robots fighting aliens from beneath the ocean/another dimension, the people behind "Pacific Rim" decided to just go with a cliche plot and story. Not just cliche though, but cheesey. They sprinkled on the ricotta and sprinkled it with cheddar. It seems as if they knew what they wanted to do and just did it without over-thinking, and that's how a movie like this should be made. The action scenes where over-the-top and fun as hell to watch. The whole movie featured top-notch computer graphics that made everything come to life and made the whole movie compelling to watch. The acting was pretty good. Despite the cheeseyness there wasn't any real over-acting or any complaints in that department. One area this movie does not disappoint in whatsoever is the badassery of it all. Certain parts (if not the whole movie) will leave you with a jaw-dropped expression.

All in all, it was a great movie and easily worth it to see in theaters. The inner kid in you will love this movie, and it's a great one to go with "the guys" to see. I can say without a doubt that I highly recommend "Pacific Rim"

While the plot and some of the characters are a little weak, the movie more thanPacific Rim is the result of taking one of the most imaginative directors alive today and giving him as much damn money as he wants: a truly spectacular film. While the plot and some of the characters are a little weak, the movie more than makes up for it with a magnificent sense of wonder and fun.

The film's strongest points are easily its battles and visuals. Every set, Jaeger, and kaiju; each punch, throw, and stomp; all are lovingly realized with incredible care and attention to detail. It's hard not to experience a sense of awe watching the godlike conflict between monster and machine. Most of the battles take place during storms, and while I've heard complaints that this makes them difficult to follow, I couldn't disagree more. Not only did I have no trouble following the fights, I think the weather enhanced the overall sense of wonder. I believe del Toro was likening the power of the kaiju to that of a storm: immense, relentless, and ultimately indifferent to human suffering. Personally, I felt that visual metaphor bred a powerful atmosphere into the battles.

While the actual plot is fairly silly, the world it takes place in is fascinating. I found the implications of the "drifting" mechanic particularly intriguing. While the film does explore its little mind-meld a bit, there are so many interesting questions about it that are left unanswered. If we are to get a sequel, I would definitely like to see a little more time spent examining the bond that forms between Jaeger pilots.

Another common complaint involves the characters. While I actually quite liked the core cast (a little stilted dialogue here and there, but nothing ear-grating), I do wish the film had spent more time developing the less prominent Jaeger pilots. The Russian and Chinese pilots get remarkably little screen time, but simultaneously seem to have their own stories to tell.

Despite it's lackluster characters, the film's dialogue delivers. Oh, yes, it's cheesy, but that's part of the charm. Passionately delivered lines like "Let's do this- together!" do a lot to reinforce the film's mood: big, heroic, and slightly campy.

The soundtrack also does its part for the mood. Rather than default to "yet more vaguely dark sforzando eighth-notes," each track works to amplify the tone of the scene. The dark bits are genuinely dark, the heroic bits are genuinely heroic. Most of it doesn't work too well on its own (with tracks "Pacific Rim" and "Go Big or Go Extinct" being notable exceptions), but within the context of the movie, it's great.

Overall, I feel like Pacific Rim is exactly what it was supposed to be: a big, beautiful, and undeniably fun love letter to mecha and kaiju, with an emphasis on fun. I'd be lying to say I felt anything less than GREAT walking out of this movie. It's that indescribable high that comes from experiencing something transcendentally awesome, and Pacific Rim doles it out in truckloads. Three days later, I'm still thinking about the movie, and loving it more and more as I do. I'm definitely going to try and scrounge up some friends and go see it again, and if I can't, I may just go alone. It's a fabulous movie, a major cut above the average summer blockbuster, so do yourself a favor and go watch the hell out of it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Walked in with my disappointment cap on, lost the cap somewhere in the first 20 minutes of the film.

I was pleased at the facts they;
1. didn't ruin it with a love plot
2. kept me entertained with different robot designs and monster "abilities"
3. didn't throw some whining runt as the main protagonist.
4. using the rule of fighting robots always save the best weapon for last.

I was dissapointed with;
1. Scientist Duo (ya corny comedy relief)
2. The apparent and confusing day and night jumps from a few select scenes
3. Action time 2/4 robots received while they were deployed.
(you would think a three armed Jaeger with a formation called the Thundercloud wouldn't go down in the span of 2 minutes right?)

Overall a good film to watch just be prepared to be blown away literally from the amazing sound.

Think of it like WWE or showtime wrestling. The wrestlers (robots) have some sort of distinguishable flair, that makes them a contender in the ring. And although you know it's all fake, the effort put into putting on a huge, dramatic, epic show still exhilarates you every time. You know those moments where you're watching a contact sport and a player gets blindsided with a huge hit making you cringe and let out a "ooohhhh". It's that feeling over and over again as you watch a huge heavy metal fist contact with alien face.

It's a film that taps into that little kid in all of us that just wants to see sure unadulterated destruction at over the top levels. By goodness, the 9 year old me is beaming with pride.

Sure the plot has about the same amount of back story as a modern pornography flick (to those who don't partake, it's not much talking and a lot of action), and sure maybe Charlie Day was the best character in the entire movie. But to take all this into consideration is futile. If you want to deal with inspiration, existential stuff, go to sundance festival and leave your critic's hat there while you're at it. This is the little rascal's tree house. No adults allowed.

2013’s most surprisingly awesome film was Pacific Rim. How did I miss this? Well…

Even though it was directed by Guillermo del Toro, who has to date made only excellent films, the trailers and the marketing for Pacific Rim did not do the film justice. There was only a bare-bones connection linking del Toro’s star power to this film. For the average person who may know del Toro’s other films, Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy 1 & 2, but not his name, the little “directed by” box at the bottom of the promotional poster would not have rung any bells, at least not in the same way a giant “From the Director of…” promotion would have. Still, I know del Toro by name and I still didn’t realize this was his film. Wayyy after it was already out of theatres I watched it on a plane. It was great.

Not only did the marketing not exploit any of the film’s star power, it didn’t even really give us any idea what it was about. The trailer just showed huge metal warriors battling Godzilla-like creatures, much in the fashion of recent mindless action movies such as Battleship (I did actually enjoy Battleship) or anything from the recent Transformers franchise. I hypothesis that this complete disconnect must have been intentional. In this way Pacific Rim attracted the same audience as the previously mentioned movies. A huge audience base that is easily swayed and turned on by special effects, battle scenes, and stuff blowing up, but they are potentially turned off by something that could be considered “cinema,” or too arty. This audience needed to be brought in from the beginning.

As for the more savvy movie-goers, although turned off by the meat head marketing, they are generally more inquisitive than the average Transformers fan, and so it seems the producers relied on these movie-goer’s inquisitive nature. Since it’s an actual good film, the savvy will find their way to it eventually. This film’s crappy marketing was actually a ploy to lure multiple demographics in subliminal ways, and thus mucho bank was made. Just a hypothesis.

FYI: According to Slashfilm.com, Transformers2 was the highest grossing, most negatively rated film in history, so getting the Transformers audience was just good business. The fact that the movie is also good is just a rare and wonderful freak, but not accidental, occurrence for the Transformers audience.

What makes Pacific Rim so great? Using a montage

sequence and voiceover, in the first five minutes of the film we learn all about the world that Earth has become. Monster Kaijus have invaded from a dimension shifting portal in the ocean, humans have built fighting machines called Jaegers to combat the Kaijus, and this on-going threat, the conflict between the two entities has eventually just becomes a routine part of common culture. Then suddenly things change.

The set designs are spectacular. Hong Kong is specially tailored here to fit a Kaiju bashing society. The encampments where the machinery and pilots are based is a gloomy complex that looks like the inside of a submarine. Being a big budget action film, Pacific Rim relies heavily on computer-generated graphics and spectacular special effects for its visual telling. Truthfully I have no idea how any of these action scenes would have been shot as almost every one is an epic between giant monsters, earthy and not. But it is not the visuals alone that make this a great movie. Transformers has great visuals.

It is the script that is so awesome. Co-written by Travis Beachman and del Toro, it is a sci-fi monster movie, but it is the nuances that make the film so much fun to watch. All the intricacies of the world. For instance, two people whose brain functions combine in a process called “the drift” pilot Jaegers. Pilots’ ability to drift effectively in unison is what creates great pilots. The drift is probably the single coolest thing about this film, and the idea is used later for purposes even crazier.

The Kaijus become so powerful that mankind is forced into a final standoff using all the remaining Jaegers against multiple super strong Kaijus. The prospects for humanity’s survival look grim. In final act of the film a spectacular twist takes place thanks to some unlikely scientists, and the fate of all humanity hangs on their wild hunch, the functioning of the aging military machinery, and the drift between the last two standing Jaeger pilots. I wish I had seen this film in theatres.

Let's see if Pacific Rim 2 ever makes it from the hard-drive on Travis Beachman's desk to the screen. This time, I'd give it a chance.

I personally enjoy movies with heavy thought, such as Donnie Darko and movies with mindless action such as expendables. This movie didn't need to suit either category. I can only hope that other Asian to American style conversions can be as successful as Pacific Rim.

Where are all the women? Why does the oxygen fail on only HER suit? It was her story of revenge: why the hell didn't she get the glory? And why was she the only woman who spoke for more than five seconds? GRRRRR!!!!

The second time I watched, I noticed there were two other women in the whole story - both got murdered, one of them was also pregnant. And why does the white man always get the goods? The last battle was ruined with white men saying and doing things that interfered with the flow of the action. And there was only one black guy in the whole movie, but he of course dies. How boring. The plot of the entire movie centered on him!!

Wins
OMG I LOVED THIS MOVIE! Despite the huge gender/race fails, I cared about the two core characters Pentacost and Mori. Almost cared about the Beckets. Seldom do I care at all! I loved the Jagers and the Kaiju - excellent use of CGI vs. real that perfectly matched the style and genre of the movie! LOVED the corny and black humour! This movie left me feeling moved and good - yet apprehensive about reality.

Final Comment: Ya!

"Pacific Rim" 10 Scale Rating: 8.0 (Great) ...

The Good: Truly epic large scale battles with amazing special effects. I was worried about how the Kaitju (the giant monsters) would look because in the previews they looked rubbery and somewhat fake ... but they looked much better and far more realistic in the finished product. If you grew up watching Godzilla films then you will have a geekgasm while watching this film as it is everything you ever dreamed of in a monster movie. Interesting characters that were more fleshed out than I thought they would be. While the lead character wasn't the best, he was picked up by a good supporting cast. Idris Elba was especially great and stole scenes every time he appeared.

The Bad: The drama is a little uneven. While some scenes were great and well done, a few came across as cheesier than I'd like. Charlie Day had some decent moments as a doctor who studies the Kaiju, but other scenes were forced for comedic value. I could have done without Burn Gorman's character entirely. I don't mind some comedy relief, but not when it is crammed into a film at odd moments.

It's hard to believe that this movie came out in 2013 and I never watched it until now. For some reason, I just figured that I wouldn't enjoy it so I never made an effort to watch it. Well, I finally got around to it last night and I was pleasantly surprised, because it was a ton of fun to watch. The story is simple: Aliens are invading Earth, humans build huge robots to fight them, but considering the type of movie this is I wouldn't necessarily mark that as a negative. If I go into a movie that's supposed to have huge robots fighting aliens, I want to see robots fighting aliens, not extended dialogue scenes and set up. And this movie delivers on that premise. Of course, I would always like to see more of the robots and aliens fighting, but I was satisfied with what was served up to me. I thought the acting was solid enough for what they were trying to do. I'd heard from some people over the years that Charlie Hunnam was pretty bad in this movie, but I thought that he played his role about as well as he could. I'm not exactly sure what people had such a problem with in regards to his acting. Anyway, the best characters in this movie were Dr. Newton Geiszler and Herman Gottlieb, by far. They have some incredible chemistry and provide the main comedic relief. Without them, I honestly don't think I would have liked the movie as much as I did.

Overall, I had more fun with this film than I did with The Shape of Water. Yeah, The Shape of Water is the better movie out of the two, but if I'm asked which one I'll probably watch the most over the next several years...Pacific Rim wins out.

Of course the theme of giant monsters vs giant robots is far from being new but they surprisingly managed to make this thrilling. Scenario starts with an impressive amount of stereotypes but gain in complexity and originality as we get through it. Until the end there are some impressive turns of events. Everything (pretty much the equivalent of the apocalypse) begins in 2020. I guess we can be thankful that we fortunately didn't have to face monster aliens last year. It's always good to put things into perspective.

Characters are awesome: they all have their story, their little plot justifying their presence in the army of robots. The marshall (Idris Elba) appear to be particularly attaching as his role gets further from the classic military head of the missions. His acting is perfect by the way. Every character is linked in a way or another to multiple protagonists, making the cast and the acting really rich and varied.

Special effects are quite decent even with today's look. There are obviously a lot of giants fights but I felt like it was not the major part of the movie which appeared not to be a dull and effortless action movie. Jokes are ambitious and funny. Let's just have a little thought for underwater fauna and flora who are completely destroyed as the movie goes on. The original score and the main theme are both great but the last quickly becomes repetitve.

The movie takes place in the futuristic world of big monsters from beneath the ocean (known as Pacific Rim) start to demolish the city in each continent and the government plans to make gigantic robots to stop all Kaiju beasts and to save all the citizens in the world. So they hire recruits for joining up to fight over monsters, and they need to find the way to stop all monsters that keeps going up from the ocean and to destruct the Pacific Rim's hole. The characters are very memorable in this movie and it's nowhere very cliché like most characters from these terrible Transformer series, but they stay strong and likable. Pacific Rim stands as a testament to how far advanced Hollywood is these days, as so little of this movie was actually filmed in real locations around the world. The execution to that end was superb very high quality a la Transformers but with a bit more humanity (which makes sense, seeing how they're basically oversized Iron Man outfits with two pilots). There was a big opportunity to really flesh out a high quality plot and drive character development with the time they spent on both, but I never felt like they ever really get emotionally invested in either of those points to where the I cared who lives and dies. But as the movie wrapped up, I simply said to those around me "that was actually pretty good", and left it at that. There's not much else to say or expect. But I definitely saw higher potential, one that would have set this movie in a much higher league, and that opportunity was unfortunately missed. Expand

The effects and fighting scenes are very nicely done, though I guess if you hate CGI, this movie is certainly not for you as it pretty much takes up 75% of the movie. (Though there's also some fighting between humans too)
As for the plot, it's very campy and you can pretty much see where the movie is going very quickly. That being said it's a fun kind of campy and I'd definitely watch this again together with friends. Part of that campyness are the rather awful jokes.
Over all, if you wanna have a good time watching a nice-looking action movie, go ahead and watch this one.

Don't get me wrong, the battles were absolutely spectacular, but there weren't just as many of them. Around half a movie is dedicated to its plot and it sucks. It's illogical and predictable, the characters are stereotyped and sometimes outright annoying (say, the two scientists). Normally I try not to think about the plot too much during such blockbusters, but again, in the Pacific Rim there is just too much screentime devoted to it. To compare, the recent Man of Steel also didn't boast an exactly flawless plot, but action was neatly mixed with the story, a major scene ocurring every 10 minutes or so. So in my opinion, Rim is a good summer blockbuster, but it could've been more. Expand

It's worth seeing if you like the look of the trailer, if you don't however, you may still find that you like the characters, otherwise the trailer sums up most of what to expect. While a lesser work of his, Pacific Rim is a decidedly fun, action-packed, and well thought out monster/alien invasion kind of film. With fantastic special effects and impeccable creature design, as well as robot design, Pacific Rim is an impressively crafted film. At every turn, the effects never ceased to impress me and really was a treat to watch. The film had to have been truly impressive in 3D. That said, the film does have problems. It can be a little over-the-top and the script is sketchy at best. Some of it is well-written, but far too many of them was just not well done. Charlie Day's character can be quite annoying, largely because Day has no sense of nuance and has an annoying voice in his own right, but here, it is not reigned in. Plus, it feels totally out of place in a film that is otherwise quite serious. If it were a comedy, Charlie Day would have been appropriate pick, but not here. The acting is fine, though can be a little hammy at times and I would certainly stop short of calling it good. Fortunately, the film is fun, has an important message of togetherness to communicate, and has truly incredible special effects. Far from perfect, Pacific Rim is still a fun summer romp. Expand

pretty damn terrible. The actors are all trying way too hard and it
seems that everyone involved was having a hard time taking the subject
matter seriously. Maybe because everything in this movie has been done
before. The whole plot is ripped from every aliens attack movie.
"Aliens attack and humans put aside their petty differences to work
together to destroy the attackers". Its so cliché its ridiculous. I was
constantly having flash backs to other movies. Most notably would be of
course Godzilla, Transformers and also Independence day. Even the
ending reeked of Indep Day. The black market for kaiju parts was
somewhat interesting but it was all way too Hollywood. The scientist's
were also vaguely interesting but watching them interact and grow as
characters made me want to puke. Jackson Teller just looks like he
hopped out of Sons of Anarchy and into a robot suit. Again, robots
fighting monsters will always be cool and the special effects are top
notch but everything else is unintentionally cheesy and cliché, its
very much similar to the Transformers series.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is not a very smart film, however it does do the giant monsters vs giant robots fighting very well. Think Cloverfield monsters vs giant mechs. Visuals are very impressive and they give it kind of a cool back story. If that's all you want, go, watch, you'll be entertained.

Where Pacific Rim goes wrong is it has some things that just don't make any sense and you just have to suspend belief and move on. Most of them aren't jarring and don't pull you away but some might. For example: like 2 to 4 little helicopters will be able to fly in the robots that are as big as about 4 sky scrapers put together. Does gravity and weight not apply in this world? Ignore it just keep watching... Charlie from Always Sunny is a scientist. Ok, I'd probably watch just to see that.

Some of the dialogue is pretty bad. One scene they recruit a pilot saying, "I picked you because you're the only Mark 3 robot pilot left alive." then down the road it changes to, "You were the only one to ever pilot a mech solo. That's why I chose you." Like they read the script that was written right? Lets not have a character contradict himself. Also there was a (more spoiler) scene where a pilot almost killed a bunch of people on accident because of being a pilot, and when the person who was sort of being portrayed as an antagonist gives them about it, our "hero" goes a bit overboard on defending them. Like the pilot almost killed a lot of people... It's hard to route for the guy defending that pilot from getting verbally chewed out. There was very little repercussions from that incident other than one awkward cafeteria scene.

Next,
Hey, what if these giant monsters were also linked to the dinosaurs? And like the same reason these new giant monsters are coming in is the same reasons the dinosaurs appeared? No, no, please no. You given us one fictional backstory to believe already. Don't spoil it. Spoiler, spoiler spoiler, insert alien destroy then colonize scheme here.* But hey, at least they do it with style.

The very notion of giant robots trading blows withThe mega summer blockbuster "Pacific Rim" delivers plenty of eye-popping action and battle sequences galore, but there is not enough beneath the pyrotechnics to leave a lasting impression. The very notion of giant robots trading blows with monsters across the world is likely to induce as many groans as it is cheers. Those cynical of the premise, though, may find themselves somewhat interested that director Guillermo del Toro is bringing his signature flourish to "Pacific Rim," an ode to Japanese monster cinema. Kaiju originates as a Japanese word roughly translating as “strange monster,” but more pertinently here, Kaiju is the name for this entire genre of sci-fi, where massive creatures step on buildings and threaten to destroy civilization.

The future of the world is threatened by an alien force, which unexpectedly, comes not from outer space, but from the center of the earth. In an attempt to stave off the seemingly inevitable domination of these creatures and the destruction of mankind as we know it, an army of giant robots manned by elite commander Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba), and his crack team including renegade officer Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam), and rookie soldier Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi), head to the edge of the Pacific Ocean for the mother of all showdowns.

"Pacific Rim" will fully satisfy the summer blockbuster demographic and sell lots of popcorn, but the repetitive visual fireworks eventually runs thin over the course of 131 minutes. The films set pieces, in particular the destruction of Tokyo, and the climatic battle at the earth's core between the man-made monsters and their non-human adversaries, are undeniably impressive. The action is gigantic, with elaborate CG-animation staging showdowns in pouring rain or at the bottom of the ocean, delivering on sophisticated movement that’s utterly convincing. However, it stumbles in its attempts to inject spirit into the proceedings, and interactions and dialogue between the central cast of humans provides nothing to the experience. That being said, if you're a fan of big, loud popcorn movies, "Pacific Rim" is unquestionably a cut above the gnarled heaps of metal that was "Transformers" (2007).

I will admit however, that it's probably one of the best and most intelligent giant monster movies around. The film is undeniably visual stunning. The fact that it missed out on a visual effects Oscar nod is almost criminal. Fights between the kaju and yagers are huge, meticulously detailed, and about as far fetched as you can get. It's entertaining to say the least, but I wish Del Toro had gone in for a more realistic approach. I'm not saying that it doesn't look real. It does look very real, but the style is cartoonish and outlandish. There are real artistic flourishes here in small bursts, and the supporting characters are also reasonably enjoyable, especially Charlie Day, but the movie is still only a small fragment of what could have been. The actor in the leading role gives an unconvincing and clichéd performance, and the screenplay only occasionally hints at anything truly intellectual. The music also seemed pretty cheesey to me. All and all it's pretty decent, but not anywhere close to a masterwork. Expand

I will give this a good score, since the movie didn't try to be more than it actually is, and I also found it entertaining.

I could of course pick a few holes here and there, but I will not. Compared to for instance Man Of Steel, or Lone Ranger this was brilliant entertainment. It follows the standard recipe for movies of this genre, and executes it pretty well. All in all a good experience.

Our last hope lies with the desperate plan of Marshall Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba) and his handful of remaining Jaeger pilots, including war-worn veteran Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and rookie Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi), an unlikely pair who may prove to be the best pilot team the world has ever seen. We can make this short and easy: If the spectacle of big robots battling it out with big monsters is all you’re interested in, then Pacific Rim is going to be a five-star experience that you should wholly enjoy in the biggest IMAX 3D theater you can find (earplugs recommended). However, if you require a deeper story and mythos to sell you on all the spectacle? You will get plenty of mythos, but despite a parade of “cool moments,” a mishandled central storyline ultimately makes the experience a hollow one. Director Guillermo del Toro is known for his wonderful imagination and abilities as a filmmaker demonstrated in signature works like Pan’s Labyrinth and the Hellboy movies and Pacific Rim is alive and crackling with some of his best work. From the robot and monster designs, to the well-staged battle sequences and overall concept, Pacific Rim is something uniquely its own within the crowded genre of summer blockbusters. Best of all, there’s a pervading sense of fun and joy that the director has infused his passion project with; the goal is to entertain and entertain it does, for the most part (it does get cartoony, but that cartoon is still pretty fun). On the downside, there are plenty of moments that will indeed seem less like homages and more derivative copy of other films not necessarily even related to the “Kaiju/Mecha” sub-genre. See if you can catch those Independence Day and/or Deep Blue Sea moments and you’ll know the sort of “borrowing” I’m referring to. The script co-written by del Toro and Clash of the Titans scribe Travis Beacham is not impressive. The story is straightforward enough, but an abundance of sub-plots often makes it feel scattered-brained. The emotional core and character development are even more unfocused: this is supposedly Raleigh and Mako’s story we are being told and Hunnam and Kikuchi are both solid leads with solid chemistry but beyond a couple of superficial dramatic moments, there is no real conflict between our central characters, and no real arc for them to complete as individual characters. In short: our protagonists are often the least interesting parts of the film, which inevitably means a sort of detached viewing experience. Oddly enough it is Idris Elba’s Stacker Pentecost who is the most dynamic character in Pacific Rim, and seems to get the most complete and engaging character arc of the whole ensemble. Elba (by now well established for his talent to stand out even in bit roles see: Prometheus or Thor) walks away owning every one of the many scenes he’s in which is great for him, but is also clear indication that the writers are not driving the story with full control of the wheel. The sound design is awesome and by awesome I mean very, very, loud. Actual dialogue sometimes had a cavernous echo to it that made it hard to make out but whether that was just my theater or the movie itself, I can’t say for sure. This is definitely an IMAX experience to be had; but the post-converted 3D, while very well done, doesn’t feel as necessary. A 2D IMAX experience would be more than sufficient but if you are a big fan of the robot/monster stuff, the extra splurging will be worth it to you. On the whole, Pacific Rim has its creator to thank for elevating it above so many similar and forgettable action blockbusters, through sheer creativity, love and force of will. While the storyline and emotional core aren’t strong, the action and spectacle are, and del Toro builds his world well enough to create plenty of future opportunities for re-visits, spin-offs, multi-media projects and everything else fans (and movie studios) love in a good fanboy franchise. If there is one thing I love about a movie is when it's self aware and knows the kind of feeling is trying to get across, and that is exactly what Pacific Rim does.

With not much mingling around the movie gives you exactly what you paid for, see giant robots fight giant monsters and that is what you get; it's not trying to beat you over the head with a overly complex story or trying to be deeper than it should be; it's like a roller coaster, you ride it to have fun and feel the rush, no more.

I am annoyed by a few things like the forced romance and some unnecessary scenes that add absolutely nothing to the movie; but if you are looking for a fun movie to watch I am sure you will enjoy this one.

As expected of Del Toro the set-pieces totally delivered. Dud totally showed his class since they were so expertly paced they didn't feel wearisome like Man of Steel's. The script was a friggin' misery though. It was a convoluted mess and the movie's sad attempt at humor only exacerbated the trouble (It was totally bad, like "Michael Bay" bad).

In terms of cast it was a mixed bag. As i said before Elba stood out. There was a surprisingly considerable amount of writing made for his character and Elba delivered. There was nothing special about Mako Mori though she was absolutely gorgeous. Charlie Hunnam was pretty plain though he didn't turn out as exasperating as i thought. But the rest was horrendous, yes including Charlie Day (They could have given him better jokes).

I say a sequel wouldn't be a bad brainchild but i'm not totally against stopping right here either. The loose ends were tied up nicely.

Guillermo Del Toro gives the Kaiju sub-genre a sloppy wet kiss (in spectacular fashion) in this sci-fi monster movie. From Godzilla to Gundam Wing, the spirit of Japanese monster and mecha fiction flows through this movie like a breath of fresh air (or torrential rains), without it losing its sense of originality. Destructive monsters, known as Kaijus, have emerged from an interdimensional portal on the floor of the Pacific Ocean. In resistance, the humans have developed giant robots, called Jaegers, which are piloted by two or more individuals in order share the mental load of operating such large, complex machinery. This leads to the drift, a brilliant concept, and the means by which the pilots ‘mind meld’ (so to speak) to operate the mechas together, and potentially do more. Set many years into this war, Del Toro constructs a world that feels lived in and the designs for the kaijus and jaegers were truly brilliant. Any attempt he makes to develop his characters (which is for the most part successful in my opinion) is a bonus for this spectacle. And what a spectacle it was… I haven’t been this awestruck by big, loud, action scenes in a while. These sensational battle sequences wouldn't have been possible without the bombastic visual effect and sound mix; and not to mention the exceptionally creative, and dangerous sound designs. Yes, it may have only skimmed the surface of some its dramatic potential, but I went into this for a good time, and I got something inventive and visually spectacular as well. Del Toro is a true crafts man, and he crafts the most entertaining blockbuster to hit the theaters this summer. Expand

First of all, let's talk about the fights between the kaiju(Japanese for strange monster) and the Jaegars, the giant robots and humanity's best weapons against this threat.it's brilliant, the effects are brilliant and the movements of the robots are brilliant, since you won't expect the machines to move at a fast pace,.it is also reinforce by an impressive score too and the right sound effects. I appreciate that you can see what's going on in the scenes and they are well executed. This is one of the main reason that you should see this film.Period.

and then the visual design,And oh man, how I loved the uniqueness of every monster and machine. it scales to the older, more bulky models to the more sleek, agile and let's say,a more modernized style of architecture.I have to admit, each has a distinctive style of fighting, one with brute force, and the other with specialized in close-quarter combat via melee weapons. and the monsters are unique too, each having a different style and design with them with one with the ability to fly, one that has a knife for a head(which reminds me of an episode in Dexter's lab with a monster with the axe head).

The story is simple and straightforward, two brothers, Raleigh (played by Charlie Hunnam) and Yancy Becket, who is played by Diego Klattenhoff, set out on a mission to take down their latest kaiju by the orders of Comandder Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba). Unfortunately,it overpowers the duo and one of has their life taken by the Kaiju.this leads to one of the brothers to work in making a wall, that replaces the jaegars since the jaegars are no longer effective. Then Pentecost finds Raleigh and convince him to return to the battlefield. where they head to Hong Kong, meeting with the Comannder's brightest pupil Mako Mori played by Rinko Kikuchi. I refuse to spoil the rest of the story, but it's basically that machines are set to eliminate the threat once and for all. What I liked about he story is the mythos, a pilot must have a co- pilot, otherwise the person will die due to incompatibility with the jaegar so two are used to control each side of the brain. And also, when a new kaiju arrives, they evolve, which is the sole reason how the main character loses his brother and the changes in terms of strategy.it's a love it or hate it factor and for the record, I like it,

and it's reinforced by the acting and the writing, sure it's not all impressive but Elba's performance is the highlight, it's like he's born as a commander, you will always have your attention to him.The main characters of Charlie and Rinko are above average, but the chemestry between the duo feels right. But then again, it's not bad, but it's really good overall. the script is realistic (other than the stereotypes) and and surprising as well for example, then Pentecost is confronted by Raleigh, and the two points are repeated,i did not expect to hear that and was a surprise as well. Also the way the movie is played out is like a high octane anime.

But what i didn't like was the stereotypes,we have a scientist that is so obviously unrealistic and very campy, that i feel that it was like a cartoon.no offense but i'd think that the scientist should me more calm and less well... paranoid and the other one is that hotshot Australian.
, why does act like a total douche and a freaking whiner that Becket is around? i feel that he should show at least some respect towards the veteran rather to act as a douche overall at the early parts.also, i was disappointed that the other jaegars didn't have a longer screen time, and if there was a prequel,i would like how Pentecost was back then.

In conclusion, the movie is by no means a very sophisticated or spectacular story wise, but if you seek a satisfying movie flick, ignoring any other details, this is a must see. I like how the movie didn't bother to be like a Hollywood blockbuster with the annoying cliches surrounding it, but it took a concept that is loved in japan (The kaiju movie genre and inspiration from many anime shows) and also filling out any plotholes, so simply all questions are answered.

Heading in I was begging that this movie doesn't remind me of anything from horrible transformers movie, and it doesn't. It has a nice simple three act structure that is easy to follow and doesn't mix tones between serious and comic relief tones like in transformers. Their are a few plot holes that are minor and just silly that don't take anything away from the whole movie experience like the Ocean Wall idea. I also wish that the movie explained what each weapons each Jaeger had before they fought so I had some foreshadowing before they fought. Bullogna Score: 7.0/10! Very good.
Personal Score: 9.0/10

Based on the hype the Godzilla-esque science-fiction Guillermo Del Toro film received, I had expectations for Pacific Rim. Honestly, I’m not sure whether they were good or bad expectations, but I expected this film to be significant compared to the recently lackluster Hollywood releases found throughout the Summer. Optimistically, I entered the theater with an open-mind, which is always a rewarding experience. When standards are set high, a moviegoer is likely to be disappointed, but in the case of Pacific Rim, I was far from it.

The movie begins with an appetite for disaster. It immediately immerses you in this beautiful CGI world in which Earth is being attacked by an “alien” race called the Kaiju which actually derived from none other than our planet’s own Pacific waters. Then the movie prematurely establishes its largest flaw: the human characters. Raleigh and Yancy Becket are two over-confident ‘dude-bros’ piloting an older Jaegar (a gigantic humanoid mecha which requires two human controllers to mend in spirit in order for the bots to properly function) who provide awful first impressions for the films’ viewers, but perhaps this was a move made intentionally by Del Toro.

As the film progresses, especially after the death of the irritating Yancy Becket, it gets better. Raleigh, however, is now alone and in desperate need of a new co-pilot, which in turn becomes the much more suitable Mako Mori who is forced to fight the terror of her near-death experience as a child during the mending process, but expectedly arrives at a more confident state, allowing for much more fluid Jaegar maneuvering.

In an interesting side-story featuring Charlie Day as Dr. Newton Geiszler, a scientist who attempts to control the minds of Kaiju as pilots have done with the Jaegar, and nearly dies in the attempt. Day adds plenty of excitement and mild humor to an otherwise serious tale, and ultimately serves as a similar character to his role in It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, failing to truly fit the context of Pacific Rim. After nearly dying in an attempt to control a Kaiju brain, Geiszler, tends to the matter once again, in need of a second brain to experiment on. He then contact Hannibal Chau, a black marketer who makes a living selling Kaiju organs.

The movie ends predictably with many giant Kaiju defeated and all the important cast still living, including Hannibal Chau, who was eaten by a Kaiju but who reappears after the end credits with an unexpected one-liner. Overall, the film is best seen on a much larger scale such as IMAX or RPX, but at the very least seen in stereoscopic 3D. Pacific Rim will probably go down as the best 3D film of the year, with the added dimension complementing the larger-than-life combat between Kaiju and Jaegar, and that alone is worth the $10 or so admission fee. It’s a fun action movie with a lacking storyline, but a proficient CG design that will leave you breathless with its flawless homage to Japanese pop culture.

The only negatives to this movie for me would be the fact that for some reason most fights happen in darkened environments; and on one or two sections I found the writing script to be sub par, but nothing to take away from the enjoyment of the movie. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros: Delivered what was promised, Robots vs Monsters, Brilliant sound, beautiful CG
Cons: Incredibly predictable, plot exists to tie up monster fights, cliches up the butt

Well I got what I was expecting with the movie i'll give it that much. It delivered on what it promised in the trailers, giant robots fighting giant monsters. While some elements of the plot were obvious and cliche it still delivered and I can't fault it for doing what it set out to do.

Pacific Rim doesn't bother giving us a massively fleshed out back story, its the most basic of stories before we're thrown right into the action. Jaegars fighting Kaiju, man it's awesome to watch.

The plot just feels like it's there to tie in the monster fights though and you can take bets on which of the Jaegars dies next pretty much, its not trying to hide anything and 90% of the "twists" can be seen a mile off without even having both eyes open.

Another annoying point is the constant cliche in action movies. There is always a renegade maverick who doesn't play by the rules and its because he doesn't play by the rules that he either (1. Is discharged from his job or 2. Leaves because something bad happened because he didn't play by the rules.) But then he's called back because they need someone who doesn't play by the rules and ARGH! That one cliche just p*sses me the ever loving f*ck off.

Aside from that its what you pay to see, Monsters vs Robots. Just don't expect a thrilling epic tale of tragedy and woe thrown in with the story. It's cliche characters being cliche, and that's ok for this move.

While a very entertaining flick which delivered exactly on its premise, the movie was a bit disappointing. Maybe it was because of high expectations from Del Toro, but the film felt overall quite flat.
It had a very interesting premise and something new and creative to add to the monster movie genre (specifically, the effect constant kaiju attacks would have on our society), it nevertheless never got too deep. The characters all had some interesting moments but never managed to get really deep. This lackluster characterization, coupled with some plot holes, made the movie feel very two dimensional.
I noticed this immediately after leaving the theatre, because I tried to strike up a conversation with my friends about what we thought of the movie. It ended up being a very short conversation about how the movie was pretty okay.
The movie is very enjoyable and delivers on the giant robots being heroes theme. My advice watching the movie is to not expect not much else from it. I do hope that when the sequel comes out, that Del Toro will be willing to incorporate more interesting concepts and more in-depth character development.
Because I think that this particular kind of movie can hold a lot of potential.

Only big thing wrong with the movie is the: Generic Movie Hero #4623 aka Raleigh Becket (main character) thrown in this universe to solve its problems which are solvable in only cliché means and ways as in most of the movies today. And there is the lack of distance between events as everything seems like its piled on top of each other and glued together so it wont separate. Camera man decided to film every action scene with Zoom on 200%, and movie physics is sometimes unrealistic.

And there is a constant question: If they have all the ranged weapons and melee weapons why don't they use them at the start of the battle and not in the most critical time? All that partially or mostly fades away (dependent on the public) as the movie action, special effects and sometimes a bad-ass scene or a moment takes place. Overall the movie is great and you should watch it.

The movie is extremely spectacular, thanks to its great visuals and music sound effects that make the action scenes truly shine. It is true, though, that the plot isn't too original (but I must admit that taking ideas from Japanese culture made the plot more interesting) and it's handled in a typical and cheesy way. Despite its flaws, Pacific Rim is a decent and entertaining movie.

Scoring:

Production Values (Sound Visuals): 9/10 (good all-around and immersive)
Story Characters: 4/10 (typical and a bit cheesy but has a good pacing)
Enjoyment: 7/10 (the action scenes are well done and you don't have time to get bored)
Total: 6.7/10

Expand

However, the mistake was in how this movie was cut. It should have shown less fight scenes and CGI destruction porn, and more of the dynamic between Mako and whatever Hunnam's character was named. There are scenes where the connection between the two does not really make sense unless there was a bigger romantic arc between the two of them that was cut in favor of more kaiju scenes. I realize that this is not a serialized anime, and we can't have all the stories given time to unfold; however, I'm just disappointed because just like in Man of Steel, CGI carnage becomes tedious after a while. Pacific Rim is a really interesting and unique movie. The battles between the robots and the monsters are freakin amazing. This is an amazing movie to watch in 3D. Its a very enjoyable action film and I feel del Toro had just as much fun making it as I did watching it. Their is true imagination in this film. Its not groundbreaking in the storytelling department but I appreciate good fun and this film is great fun every second you see a Jaeger against a Kaiju! Expand

The visual effects keep it going rather than aid the story, but I guess what makes it worth the watch is the guilty pleasure of seeing monsters and robots beat the crap out of each other.
