A perfect popcorn summer fun movie. Those looking for in depth commentary on the human condition should look elsewhere. Just a badass movie that's lots of fun.

I loved the action and the spectacle. The battles, despite the one absurdity of giant robots fighting alien invaders had sense of realism that was rather unnerving. Everything but that (minor detail) was eerily plausible. I also liked the other messages found throughout. Mostly, though, I loved how it all came together as a kind of celebration of the value science and technology when coupled with human courage, ingenuity, innovation, self-sacrifice, individualism (when appropriate), and cooperation (when appropriate).

It's the many minor messages within the movie that made it stand out from mindless summer action movie fare (which are fine, on occasion).

First, what I like the most: I liked abiding theme of science and technology being tools for human salvation. There are literally no scenes without some object of human ingenuity in view. The giant robots are man-machine saviours that aid humanity in fighting against grotesque organic monsters.

(As an aside: I like nature. I was raised in a rural area, and I enjoyed camping. But make no mistake, nature can be brutal, and it is only human scientific, technological, social, and other developments that can keep the monster at bay. If you doubt me, try surviving alone and without man-made equipment for a week in virtually any natural environment. You may not be dead, but you'll almost wish you were. Where I live (just outside a city of 1 million), you’d be dead in less than 5 hours without winter clothing, six months a year. Nature can be subservient to us, but it must never again be our master. Precambrian humans had an average life expectancy of 31 years. Also, like the monsters in this movie, any number larger wild animals would kill a human without a second thought. A bear will rip a child to shreds. Wolves (prior to their gradual domestication by killing the more violent ones over the centuries), were a particularly large threat in Europe. An elephant will gore a grown man. And so on. **It is solely our scientific, technological, and social advancements made possible by an appropriate mix of individual initiative and group cooperation that keep the nightmare at bay.** The movie Pacific Rim acknowledges this. Unlike the technological luddism of, for example, the Terminator movies or Avatar [which both partially denigrate technology and science], this movie celebrates human achievement and progress. And movies could use more of that.)

I liked that movie (unlike almost all American blockbusters) takes place in several locations, none of which are large American cities. The United States comprises about 5% of the global population, and it’s nice to see that represented in an American blockbuster. And how many times do you really want to see New York destroyed, for instance?

I appreciated the message that both cooperation and individual initiative are prudent and necessary. The fight against (for instance, there are several instances of insubordination and deviations from military procedure, but they mostly involve serving the greater good).

I liked the love story component. The lead man was not a handsome male Brad Pitt lookalike, and the female love interest was not the typical American supermodel of action flicks. Rather, she was an English-speaking Chinese national who models the very best traits of many females from that culture. She is polite and respectful, yet stands up for her beliefs non-confrontationally, and she is obviously intelligent. She is "equal but different" from the main male protagonist.

I appreciated the cursory mention of the cause for the alien invasion: global environmental degradation, the (spoiler) reason for the alien invasion.

Although there is much "apocalyptic porn" (hey, I like it too), the body count is actually quite low. While we see entire skyscrapers destroyed, because civilians are evacuated in shelters, the number of civilian casualties is less than 100. (Contrast that with "Man of Steel", which had a casualty count of six or seven figures).

It was nice to see scientists portrayed are heroes. The two scientist characters literally risk their lives to test a theory and gain evidence that is crucial to a positive outcome. This world needs more scientists and technologists. Even the characters' stereotypical eccentricity is endearing: they have their foibles, but they are each aware of it. Sometimes, human foibles are unavoidable, and condemning people for (relatively) harmless quirks that they cannot change serves no purpose.

I did like that movie avoids many Hollywood clichés (for the above reasons).

If I had one complaint, it's that the movie is too short. It's 2 hours and 10 minutes. However, there is less action than I would have liked. It's not that there is too much "non-action" content. It's just that another 30 minutes or so of giant robot battles would have been swell.

In short: see it.… Expand

Exactly what you would expect from a robot vs monster movie. So if you think you might be into that I recommend seeing this movie. This was a treat to for the eyes if you can see it in 3D I thought it was worth the extra

Pacific Rim is another wonderful brought to us by Guillermo del Toro, as this film is a visual masterpiece with great acting and a terrific story. But most of all, it is undeniably a fun ride at the movies

"Pacific Rim" is a spectacle for the eyes and ears. I mean this movie is a visual treat from well detailed robot and monster designs to high over the top, but well choreographed action sequences and massive collateral damage. The world that Guillermo del Toro creates is imaginative and his character designs are mesmerizing and complex. The sound design and the sheer force of the films score captivates you into a ride of sight and sound that pleases all your senses. From the metal grinding noise of the robots to the fleshy and almost beast like cry the monsters make, this film has you feeling like you are right there in the middle of the action.

While the movie is mostly is a visual treat, it doesn’t forget about its characters and there humanity. The film isn’t all bells and whistles, it really does have some really nice character moments in its script, which are about overcoming fear, moving on and trust. These moments make us care for the events that are unfolding. However, the script isn’t all serious business, it knows when to have fun. Some of these moments can be a bit too campy though and some of the emotional moments feel forced. The film sometimes even becomes contrived, mainly towards the end. However, director Guillermo del Toro balances things pretty well.

The actors in this film do a pretty good job, but the only real standout is Idris Elba as Stacker Pentecost.This character is sort of the leader of the resistance and Elba commands attention every second on screen. Charlie Hunnam is pretty good as Raleigh Becket, a Jaeger pilot, who left the resistance after a traumatic incident. I wish they showed more of his inner battle, it would have invested us into the story more. Rinko Kikuchi as Mako Mori is really hit or miss. The scenes where she is more reserved are good, but when she tries to emote, it can be awkward at times. The rest of the cast is pretty solid and the supporting cast is pretty good, especially Charlie Day, who brings some of the lighter moments to the film.

Overall “Pacific Rim" as a giant robot versus giant monster movie is pretty awesome. The visuals, sound, and well directed action are all top-notch. They provide a treat for the eyes like never before. Even the 3D is spectacular, the best I’ve seen since “Avatar," it really absorbs you into del Toro’s imaginative world. The story, mainly the human element, is a bit weaker as it can feel contrived at times. It keeps us involved, but never takes us to the next level of emotional satisfaction. I give it 4/5, a blockbuster with some of the coolest and most imaginative action that I have seen this year.… Expand

Pacific Rim is a one of a kind movie: a 100% commitment to its genre and target audience with absolutely no apologies for its material. Exceptionally well crafted, with full saturation of neon colors, rain and goo. This is far closer to the Godzilla 1998 film should have been. The executive who greenlit this film was fired, so be grateful that this blank check geek epic got made.… Expand

It looks nice. That's about it. There's little character and no plot so none of the action sequences make one feel as if something is at stake, so the sequences themselves become dull, negating their purpose: excitement. Dull, noisy, clichéd. I'm shocked that Del Toro had anything to do with this. I know fanboys eat this adolescent stuff with a spoon, but if you're looking for anything innovative and inspired, do not see this movie. Just terrible.

The script was awful, the CGI was good, the story was stupid, and the physics of everything... just impossible.

I have no words to describe how stupid that really feels. Why do they have plasma guns if they only use it AFTER being ass kicked Is the plasma too expensive for them? Are they running on car batteries and they don't want to waste the power?
At the end, one of the robots seem to have discovered a swordlike weapon. Wow, that could have been useful earlier.
- Another gem was the UN chairman saying they wont fund the robots anymore... like they have a choice... I cannot see the other choice though... Do not tell me the other choice was building walls. It's ridiculous.
- Judging by the size of the robots and monsters fighting... in the sea... every time they fell, a giant wave should have started and clean the land. Instead, nothing like that happens.
- The worst scene ever was when the ginormous robot picks up 2 buses and use them to splatter the head of a monster... Like just using it's ginormous metal hands wouldn't be enough. The buses must be built of stronger steel than the robot itself?

- It was "awesome" the fact that the scientists had to physically go to the army base in order to tell them that it's not gonna work (the plan). This is happening in 2017 or 2027? Awesome... so they uninvented the phones cellphones...
- It picks up buses in it's hand, then later it picks up a huge navy boat. Judging by their proportions, that ship was no taller than a bus, only longer. Really?
- In the ending fight scene... underwater... those monsters roar like they are on the surface. Awesome again.
- The idea to send an atomic bomb inside the rift came to them after 10-15 years from the beginning of the attacks, after tens of millions of civilian deaths... sounds reeeeaallly realistic :)
- On the base, the oxygen levels from inside the robot, are still readable from inside the rift (inter-dimensional portal)
- When the rift (bridge) collapses, it's representation in the army base shows it as it happens... in realtime... with nice effects... wow... the programmers of the future thought of everything, also installed sensors from top to bottom of the rift without even going there?
- The fighting scenes are so dark and shot from such angles so that I could not understand what was happening most of the time.
- And seriously... 6 helicopters move around the robots? Those giant metal machines? That is impossible, to say the least.
- The black market guy, just stands and chats while at two feet from a giant monster that 10 seconds ago was demolishing buildings and boats, and only seemed to die from no reason at all? That is realistic in what universe?
- Why would the head of the robot need to be detachable from the body? Why did the pilots have to enter the head... somewhere 10 feet above the 20 meters high robot, and after they entered the head... it would start descending into it's place... These stupid moments could have been used to develop some characters background stories
- No story for the characters. Besides the surviving brother and the surviving Japanese girl no other character has any story? Let's say I liked the fighting scenes... More like the idea of the fights. But they were too long, and too silly. Fighting with their fists against sea monsters... that is just peachy.

I expected so much more from this movie... now I have no idea why… Expand

I actually gave this movie a three, so ignore the current rating. I went into this movie expecting nothing but big dumb fun. What I got was big and dumb, but sadly lacking in "fun". Too much of the film is centred on one-dimensional human characters just talking while we impatiently wait for the action to start again. I know we should care about the characters and everything, but even with all this time spent with them, I couldn't care less about whether they lived or died. The main character is so bland that I can't even remember his name (or really anything he does) and his love interest is just as bland (though at least they tried to give her a backstory). Idris Elba's character was the only one who had any personality. Even the Robot-Monster fights occupy about 15 minutes of the running time and are mostly done in darkness. This is disapointing, since Guillermo Del Toro is such a great director, and this film should have been so much better. Instead, it begs unfortunate comparisons to Michael Bay's "Transformers" series. If you're fine with there being more uncompelling human "drama" (if it can even be called that) than the action they promised us, then good for you. Otherwise, I can't recommend this. 3/10.… Expand

Wow, just wow. I give a 10 rating once every 5 yrs or so and this rates that big time! This film is Transformers vs Godzillas on steroids, amped up to the max. Guillermo Del Toro take relativity unknown actors, mixed in with some more better known ones and makes this massive, visually enticing film that only leaves you wishing and/or wanting more. Will the sequel come? That'll be something for Warner Bros. to decide, but if they want another hit, green light the sequel and let Del Toro do his thing. This movie more than makes up for the disaster horror movie he released earlier in the year, in "Mama". Nobody was expecting this to be what it has become, so its easily a major surprise. I wouldn't go so far as to say, "best movie of the year" (that, personally for me, still lies with "The Place Beyond The Pines"). Its certainly best Action Movie of the year, and biggest surprise of the year. Worth seeing. Very fun adventure.… Expand

The movie's special effects ALONE are worth the money. Then you got the great story, the mysteries about the monsters and you always feel like O.O THESE GUYS GONNA DAI! And half the time they do... Oh also there's Hellboy.

Although the movie was great in terms of story AND special effects, the humor is just not satisfying enough, and you never really care for the characters other than the main ones.

I love Japanese mecha anime from Macross to Orguss to Evangelion and back and I never thought I'd ever be bored senseless by a film which purports to be a love letter to giant mecha and Kaiju cinema. Sure, it's cheesy and predictable. Yes, it's style over substance. But heck..what you are seeing is a friggin live action Robot Anime, coming to life, done with a 'Godzilla' sized budget. It's a great thing to look at and you have to commend the studio for even green lighting this thing. The action sequences are great, and Del Toro give this film his incredible attention to detail. It's a wonderful set up, but the bad thing is that when you are just being immersed in this world, the film ends. Other than that, a bold 'original film that deserves to succeed in weeks to come. C'mon people! A lot of folks complain that there isn't enough original material in blockbuster films these days. Give this one your support!… Expand

As a massive Del Torro fan, and a huge Mange, Anime and Mecha fan this film was everything I wanted it to be.

It made me feel like a child again, it made me feel the same way Jurassic Park made me feel when I was 5 years time, I was inAs a massive Del Torro fan, and a huge Mange, Anime and Mecha fan this film was everything I wanted it to be.

It made me feel like a child again, it made me feel the same way Jurassic Park made me feel when I was 5 years time, I was in awe. People will of course compare this brilliantly designed and thought of almost Film Noir epic to the atrocity that is is Michael Bay's orange backdrop and explosion fest that is the Transformer series, but this film is everything Bay could only dream of making and so much more. The Jeagers had a real sense of proportion, much like the classic PS2 game Shadow of the Colossus you really felt how big they were and when the [spoiler] Kaiju unfurled its wings my jaw actually dropped.

It wasn't a perfect film, but it was everything I hoped for and so much more!… Expand

pretty damn terrible. The actors are all trying way too hard and it
seems that everyone involved was having a hard time taking the subject
matter seriously. Maybe because everything in this movie has been done
before. The whole plot is ripped from every aliens attack movie.
"Aliens attack and humans put aside their petty differences to work
together to destroy the attackers". Its so cliché its ridiculous. I was
constantly having flash backs to other movies. Most notably would be of
course Godzilla, Transformers and also Independence day. Even the
ending reeked of Indep Day. The black market for kaiju parts was
somewhat interesting but it was all way too Hollywood. The scientist's
were also vaguely interesting but watching them interact and grow as
characters made me want to puke. Jackson Teller just looks like he
hopped out of Sons of Anarchy and into a robot suit. Again, robots
fighting monsters will always be cool and the special effects are top
notch but everything else is unintentionally cheesy and cliché, its
very much similar to the Transformers series.… Expand

The movie is pretty great. It's fresh in the movie industry, and creates a new world for your mind to explore. The characters develop in realistic ways, and while they could have been fleshes out more, Guillermo del Toro does a great job with the 131 minutes he had.

I went into this movie as a big skeptic. Whenever I see movies like this, I think it is going to be as mindless as the Transformers series or just plain silly. Instead, there was some great tropes that made you think more about the characters and their role in this war they are fighting.

A great new movie that creates a fun new world. I definitely recommend it.… Expand

The only negatives to this movie for me would be the fact that for some reason most fights happen in darkened environments; and on one or two sections I found the writing script to be sub par, but nothing to take away from the enjoyment of the movie. Other than that I much prefer this movie to the latest incarnation of the Superman franchise.… Expand

Those who say this movie is boring, just have no taste in a decent mecha anime, or hate all science fiction. I personally watched this movie and enjoyed it. If you like robots and monsters you can't really go wrong here. Pacific Rim is what action based movies should be. It delivers it's plot early on and gives you an idea of how grim the situation is, but it fortunately doesn't linger on the base exposition long enough to bore you to tears. The action scenes are exceptionally well made and really reflect the realism (what realism there can be with giant robots fighting monsters) of how a battle like this would happen. All the actors play their characters fantastically, helping to really deliver the experience, such as Raleigh Becket's washed up pilot character type. Overall the soundtrack had me shivering in my seat with excitement as the first track accompanied the pilots suiting up to pilot their Jaeger, and it kept me intensified during each Kaiju battle that came on screen. While the overall plot did have many cliches in it, they were delivered in the proper way as to improve the story. I highly recommend that anyone see this movie at least once, as I've already seen it twice in IMAX.… Expand

I’m usually not big on dumb action movies but this is one blockbuster where I was bored when there was no action as opposed to the other way around. At the end of the day though this film is only memorable for its visuals. You won’t remember any of the characters or plot elements as they are all bland and generic but you will remember the cool visuals and fight scenes. If you are cool with a generic action film with cool visuals then definitely check this film out.… Expand

It's true that "Pacific Rim" is a child's film with big monsters and robots fighting each other; but acclaimed director Guillermo Del Toro manages to create a film with exciting energy and lively imagination, a movie truly for-your-eyes only.

The makers of this film took the idea of robots fighting godzilla monsters and turned it into this beautiful film.

I have no other words to describe this. Just go and watch it.… Expand

Gonna start off with the negatives Painfully generic and predictable story that you can call from a mile away. The acting is so-so and it does suffer from a few poor casting choices (Charlie Day anyone?).

That being said, The battle scenes are freaking fantastic. So incredibly well done, They are simply addicting to watch. That alone makes the film worth watching and I really wish that I had seen it in theaters in 3-D because it would have been a blast.

So overall, Thankfully the story is not a major focus but the battles are. For that alone, It's worth checking out because it can be rather enjoyable to watch.… Expand

But when i saw it, i was pleasantly surprised. it was actually a pretty good film, it had a good story line, amazing visuals, and good action scenes. i really only had one complaint though, there is very little character development. Ok, maybe I've been spoiled by evangelion, but there really isn't much. i mean, with some of the characters you meet them, you see their robot, their dead. you never really get to learn much about them, but besides that this was a very good film i believe is worth watching.… Expand

But this movie delivers all that. Don't be turned off by the genre and even though it's in third place in the box office it is easily better than Grown ups 2 in critical reception and it may be better than Despicable Me 2 for older kids. So really it should be number 1. Also if you think it may be scary for little kids that's not true. There only gore that comes from the monster and one or two curses. Maybe not for 4-8 years olds but anyone older will probably be alright. So anyway this films boasts amazing visuals, great acting and a great story. I wouldn't be surprised if it won an Oscar for best visuals. This is a definite must see.… Expand

Great fun, amazing designs. The Jaegers especially were pure joy to watch. There's no lulling dip dragging out mankind's first contact, or over the top drama, just monsters versus robots. Absolutely brilliant.

I didn't expect to like this movie as much as I did. Wow, was it ever a satisfying monster/giant robot movie that was visually pleasing in an anime style. I loved this movie for what it is, a magificent tribute to the Mecha and Kaiju generes. The fights are simply amazing and the visual effects are top notch. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I appreciated the fact that "Pacific Rim" wasn't overly hyped like a lot of films usually are. I guess that's probably Guillermo del Toro's MO when it comes to films.

That being said, I loved it. The fights were epic, with each Kaiju requiring a different tactic to defeat and the introductory timeline showing the dwindling numbers of Jaegers still active set a tone of desperation for humanity. That leads back to the film's battle sequences, where you don't know if a Jaeger (and its pilots) will survive the fight or not. Sudden twists with the Kaiju elicited a "what??" response from me on more than one occasion. An engaging story together with intense battles made the movie one of the best films I've seen this summer.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pacific rim may have been the only movie I wanted to see this summer; heck maybe this year! So the time has finally come, and I am overjoyed. Yes I do like anime and kaiju films, but I only watch anime films now and I rarely see a kaiju film again now a days. So that tells you where I'm coming from. Anyways, Pacific does best what the other blockbusters do but aren't quite there yet. This film gives you all its got, there's no cliffhanger or any major loose ends; I do think man of steel is real close in that does world building, but that film is definitely getting a sequel. Back to Pacific rim, it gives very cool action sequences; the best being the Hong Kong battle, and tries to slow the action for the better. It is "logical" after all that giant creatures and mechs should move at this pace, so therefor the action is easy to follow even in the dark. So obviously the visuals is the high point, the middle ground is the cast. No one is terrible, or even bad; in fact Idris is the best actor in this film, but the scientist and Ron Perlman are a bit distracting. (Disclaimer: Ron Perlman is awesome). With the basic film critique out of the way, I can now just say what I liked and disliked; because I appreciate a film more when I can acknowledge its pros and cons. I liked the action, the design of the Jaegers and Kaijus, that characters aren't too sophisticated, and the sheer size of it makes it a masterpiece in eye candy. However, I disliked some of the characters; the scientists in particular and the jerk from Australia, that the Russian and Chinese Jaegers get the short strip and get defeated too quickly; I loved their designs the most, and some of the logic is either nonsensical or just plain silly.… Expand

First of all, let's talk about the fights between the kaiju(Japanese for strange monster) and the Jaegars,the giant robots and humanity's best weapons against this threat.it's brilliant, the effects are brilliant and the movements of the robots are brilliant, since you won't expect the machines to move at a fast pace,.it is also reinforce by an impressive score too and the right sound effects. I appreciate that you can see what's going on in the scenes and they are well executed.This is one of the main reason that you should see this film.Period.

and then the visual design,And oh man, how I loved the uniqueness of every monster and machine. it scales to the older, more bulky models to the more sleek, agile and let's say,a more modernized style of architecture.I have to admit, each has a distinctive style of fighting, one with brute force, and the other with specialized in close-quarter combat via melee weapons. and the monsters are unique too,each having a different style and design with them with one with the ability to fly, one that has a knife for a head(which reminds me of an episode in Dexter's lab with a monster with the axe head).

The story is simple and straightforward, two brothers, Raleigh (played by Charlie Hunnam) and Yancy Becket, who is played by Diego Klattenhoff, set out on a mission to take down their latest kaiju by the orders of Comandder Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba). Unfortunately,it overpowers the duo and one of has their life taken by the Kaiju.this leads to one of the brothers to work in making a wall, that replaces the jaegars since the jaegars are no longer effective.Then Pentecost finds Raleigh and convince him to return to the battlefield. where they head to Hong Kong, meeting with the Comannder's brightest pupil Mako Mori played by Rinko Kikuchi. I refuse to spoil the rest of the story, but it's basically that machines are set to eliminate the threat once and for all.What I liked about he story is the mythos, a pilot must have a co- pilot, otherwise the person will die due to incompatibility with the jaegar so two are used to control each side of the brain.And also, when a new kaiju arrives, they evolve, which is the sole reason how the main character loses his brother and the changes in terms of strategy.it's a love it or hate it factor and for the record, I like it,

and it's reinforced by the acting and the writing,sure it's not all impressive but Elba's performance is the highlight, it's like he's born as a commander, you will always have your attention to him.The main characters of Charlie and Rinko are above average, but the chemestry between the duo feels right. But then again, it's not bad, but it's really good overall. the script is realistic (other than the stereotypes) and and surprising as well for example, then Pentecost is confronted by Raleigh, and the two points are repeated,i did not expect to hear that and was a surprise as well.Also the way the movie is played out is like a high octane anime.

But what i didn't like was the stereotypes,we have a scientist that is so obviously unrealistic and very campy,that i feel that it was like a cartoon.no offense but i'd think that the scientist should me more calm and less well... paranoid and the other one is that hotshot Australian.
, why does act like a total douche and a freaking whiner that Becket is around? i feel that he should show at least some respect towards the veteran rather to act as a douche overall at the early parts.also, i was disappointed that the other jaegars didn't have a longer screen time, and if there was a prequel,i would like how Pentecost was back then.

In conclusion, the movie is by no means a very sophisticated or spectacular story wise, but if you seek a satisfying movie flick,ignoring any other details, this is a must see. I like how the movie didn't bother to be like a Hollywood blockbuster with the annoying cliches surrounding it, but it took a concept that is loved in japan (The kaiju movie genre and inspiration from many anime shows) and also filling out any plotholes, so simply all questions are answered.… Expand

Teniendo esto en cuenta, analicemos por que los Jeager de Pacific Rim son los Mechas mas increíbles que ha tenido el cine. Transformers marco una etapa donde los efectos habían empatado a la fotografía de la película y todo después de Transformers era un post, era un "ya lo vimos, y mejor". Ahora tenemos estos colosales mechas, del tamaño de un rascacielos, rompiendo los margenes establecidos en Transformers, y ademas, peleando con criaturas que a pesar de ser oscuras y sin ningún previo en que basar el arte, terminaron por encantarnos, por tener una personalidad, y en lo mas profundo del monstruo; una relación con alguna fobia. A este punto, la película marca un nuevo nivel, una nueva base en efectos limpios y secuencias de acción monumental que nos impiden olvidarlas, y por supuesto; querer mas.

La película puede tener tropiezos, pero estos están en partes que no nos interesan. Uno no fue a ver Les miserables por los efectos visuales. Hay quienes quieren neciamente compararla con Neon Genesis Evangelion, y la película tiene dos cosas:
1.- NO es Neon Genesis Evangelion, y
2.- Es lo mas cerca y mejor logrado, en el ahora un genero de películas; los Mechas.

Es conmovedor leer que la película esta dedicada a Harryhausen y Honda. Al saber un poco de producción cinematográfica puedo decir sin problemas, que las secuencias donde pelean en Hong Kong es un logro técnico, un parte-aguas en la implementacion de efectos que solo Industrial Light and Magic pudo lograr, un gran tributo, un respeto y regalo a aquellos que nos hicieron imaginar cosas como esta hace muchos años.

Hoy digo Gracias por crear Pacific Rim, espero que de alguna manera Guillermo pueda convencer de hacer Bioshock.… Expand

Okay, first off. Definitely not a Transformers Rip Off. I felt that this was very fresh. Loved it from start to finish, I felt that there was not really a "main" character and there were reasons to root for and become attached to all of them. I could see t he Del Toro flavor in much of the design, specifically the Ron Pearlman character. So to sum up, just watch it! Classic Summer flick. Enjoy.… Expand

Want a fresh break for Sci fi fans. If you ever grew up seeing the movie robot joxs as a kid and wanted more this is it. My only grip was alot was just simply spoiled by the trailers. FUN!!! Yes, it's about giant robots battling giant monsters. And somehow a couple of scenes made me tear up. (I'm a father and the father-daughter scenes worked on me.) I'll be buying this one.

I thought, that "Pacific Rim" was a thoroughly, enjoyable, action-packed movie that got me gripping the seat and biting my nails. I don't get how people can stand to give it a low rating. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Walked in with my disappointment cap on, lost the cap somewhere in the first 20 minutes of the film.

I was pleased at the facts they;
1. didn't ruin it with a love plot
2. kept me entertained with different robot designs and monster "abilities"
3. didn't throw some whining runt as the main protagonist.
4. using the rule of fighting robots always save the best weapon for last.

I was dissapointed with;
1. Scientist Duo (ya corny comedy relief)
2. The apparent and confusing day and night jumps from a few select scenes
3. Action time 2/4 robots received while they were deployed.
(you would think a three armed Jaeger with a formation called the Thundercloud wouldn't go down in the span of 2 minutes right?)

Overall a good film to watch just be prepared to be blown away literally from the amazing sound.… Expand

It had a very interesting premise and something new and creative to add to the monster movie genre (specifically, the effect constant kaiju attacks would have on our society), it nevertheless never got too deep. The characters all had some interesting moments but never managed to get really deep. This lackluster characterization, coupled with some plot holes, made the movie feel very two dimensional.
I noticed this immediately after leaving the theatre, because I tried to strike up a conversation with my friends about what we thought of the movie. It ended up being a very short conversation about how the movie was pretty okay.
The movie is very enjoyable and delivers on the giant robots being heroes theme. My advice watching the movie is to not expect not much else from it. I do hope that when the sequel comes out, that Del Toro will be willing to incorporate more interesting concepts and more in-depth character development.
Because I think that this particular kind of movie can hold a lot of potential.… Expand

And whoop, there it is!

No McGuffins, no "awww I can't handle the responsibility of being a hero", no dark deep metaphorical jibber jabber. Two heroes who have to manage their problems due to the storie's basic thesis: To kick some aline butt and close the rim, you have to work as a unit.

The result is a stereotype heavy movie with meaningfull fistfight and visible effects on the world around the main story. Go watch it, if somewhere inside of you still exists a big child that loves giant robots and city crushing monsters.… Expand

Even though it was directed by Guillermo del Toro, who has to date made only excellent films, the trailers and the marketing for Pacific Rim did not do the film justice. There was only a bare-bones connection linking del Toro’s star power to this film. For the average person who may know del Toro’s other films, Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy 1 & 2, but not his name, the little “directed by” box at the bottom of the promotional poster would not have rung any bells, at least not in the same way a giant “From the Director of…” promotion would have. Still, I know del Toro by name and I still didn’t realize this was his film. Wayyy after it was already out of theatres I watched it on a plane. It was great.

Not only did the marketing not exploit any of the film’s star power, it didn’t even really give us any idea what it was about. The trailer just showed huge metal warriors battling Godzilla-like creatures, much in the fashion of recent mindless action movies such as Battleship (I did actually enjoy Battleship) or anything from the recent Transformers franchise. I hypothesis that this complete disconnect must have been intentional. In this way Pacific Rim attracted the same audience as the previously mentioned movies. A huge audience base that is easily swayed and turned on by special effects, battle scenes, and stuff blowing up, but they are potentially turned off by something that could be considered “cinema,” or too arty. This audience needed to be brought in from the beginning.

As for the more savvy movie-goers, although turned off by the meat head marketing, they are generally more inquisitive than the average Transformers fan, and so it seems the producers relied on these movie-goer’s inquisitive nature. Since it’s an actual good film, the savvy will find their way to it eventually. This film’s crappy marketing was actually a ploy to lure multiple demographics in subliminal ways, and thus mucho bank was made. Just a hypothesis.

FYI: According to Slashfilm.com, Transformers2 was the highest grossing, most negatively rated film in history, so getting the Transformers audience was just good business. The fact that the movie is also good is just a rare and wonderful freak, but not accidental, occurrence for the Transformers audience.

What makes Pacific Rim so great? Using a montage

sequence and voiceover, in the first five minutes of the film we learn all about the world that Earth has become. Monster Kaijus have invaded from a dimension shifting portal in the ocean, humans have built fighting machines called Jaegers to combat the Kaijus, and this on-going threat, the conflict between the two entities has eventually just becomes a routine part of common culture. Then suddenly things change.

The set designs are spectacular. Hong Kong is specially tailored here to fit a Kaiju bashing society. The encampments where the machinery and pilots are based is a gloomy complex that looks like the inside of a submarine. Being a big budget action film, Pacific Rim relies heavily on computer-generated graphics and spectacular special effects for its visual telling. Truthfully I have no idea how any of these action scenes would have been shot as almost every one is an epic between giant monsters, earthy and not. But it is not the visuals alone that make this a great movie. Transformers has great visuals.

It is the script that is so awesome. Co-written by Travis Beachman and del Toro, it is a sci-fi monster movie, but it is the nuances that make the film so much fun to watch. All the intricacies of the world. For instance, two people whose brain functions combine in a process called “the drift” pilot Jaegers. Pilots’ ability to drift effectively in unison is what creates great pilots. The drift is probably the single coolest thing about this film, and the idea is used later for purposes even crazier.

The Kaijus become so powerful that mankind is forced into a final standoff using all the remaining Jaegers against multiple super strong Kaijus. The prospects for humanity’s survival look grim. In final act of the film a spectacular twist takes place thanks to some unlikely scientists, and the fate of all humanity hangs on their wild hunch, the functioning of the aging military machinery, and the drift between the last two standing Jaeger pilots. I wish I had seen this film in theatres.

Let's see if Pacific Rim 2 ever makes it from the hard-drive on Travis Beachman's desk to the screen. This time, I'd give it a chance.… Expand

After hearing lots of good things about Pacific Rim from Rotten Tomatoes, IMDB, and more, I was expecting to walk out of the theater ready to text my friends recommending they see it. I have to say that I did the very opposite. Not only was I disappointed with the film, it had many scenes leaving me unsure of what just happened.

After 18 minutes of the film catching us up to present day, we finally learn the film’s title, Pacific Rim, just in case someone in the theater wasn't sure. Massive creatures known as Kaiju have managed to make their way to earth and are wiping out entire cities at a time. The only thing able to kill them is a Jaeger which uses the same concept as the movie Real Steel, (fighter robots controlled by humans) only they are much bigger and take nine helicopters to carry.

The Kaiju are much more advanced than first considered, and are arriving on earth in stages. The higher the stage, the more advanced and powerful the creature is. The highest stage reached in Pacific Rim is a stage five. Along with the Kaiju being just flat out creepy, we learn that they also shoot their eerie blue blood out of their mouths causing whatever it hits to fall apart and basically disintegrate.

As they continue to get smarter and stronger, they are wrecking the Jaegers; it is up to Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnan) and Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) to stop them. As they are about to go into battle, Dr. Newton Geiszler (Charlie Day) introduces a plan that could save the rest of the world, and kill off all of the Kaiju, permanently.

Pacific Rim officially proved that long is not always better, as the 131 minute film had more back-story and irrelevant content, than meaningful scenes. I felt that the film was rushed, and just as I began to understand one scene, they would cut to another. After watching the film, I realized that it was really more about the CGI (Computer-Generated Imagery) editors, then the actors. Without them, Pacific Rim would've been nothing. Director Guillermo del Toro, had a great idea for a movie, but could have made Pacific Rim overall much better.… Expand

As far as monster vs big bad robots are concerned, not bad at all. But don't think too much! Why the actors have to walk inside the thing (to make the mech walk) is beyond me. I think I'll take a good look on Guillermo del Toro's other movies ( whatever else he directed or maybe was a writer too ) But this redefines a great CGI monster battle out blockbuster. Pacific Rim is loaded with fantastic visuals that will appeal to many fanboys and for many people who just wants a little dose of a monster verus metal clash in our great cities.

I first saw this in a Latino theater in Ecuador located somewhere in South America ( That is where I was born ) and I loved it!!! I then got lucky enough to See it AGAIN ...but this time in 3D! ( Yes, in a latino movie theater, don't worry I understand spanish quite well. )

The experince was again fantastic! Great monster verus giant robots fights! It was breath-taking. Another word I'll use to describe Transformers. (2007)! I have the movie on DVD, Blu-ray and Digital HD! Once I get my Blu-Ray DVD player, I'll shall watch this movie in the Blu ray version! LOVED this epic movie! Watch it please!!! HIGHLY FREAKING RECOMMEND!… Expand

Normally, I spend a paragraph or so outlining the plot of a movie but in the case of Pacific Rim, a sentence will suffice: the world (with America at the helm) makes giant robots to fend off aliens from another dimension.

I have said this before but I’ll say it again: I will not be stirred by pretty graphics. For me to be a fan of a movie, it had better use some of its $200 million dollar budget on something other than CGI. Pacific Rim did not. I will admit that the graphics are really pretty and the camera work is such that you can parse what is going on. But, if I may speak frankly, it frustrates me that this movie is meeting with so much success. What am I missing?

I hear from fan-boys, that Pacific Rim harkens back to Godzilla movies. I get it that this is supposed to be a silly movie about giant robots, aliens, and pretty graphics but let’s not lose perspective, people. This is a bad movie. The dialog and plot are nonexistent. The patriotism in the movie hits you over the head. If I were going to turn this into a drinking game, I’d take a shot for every shot that makes you say ‘Yeah, go ’murica!” Warning, you might die from alcohol poisoning.

The movie gets so preposterous at times that it is funny. For example, I imagine the planning meeting when building one of the giant robots going like this:
“Guys, alright, we have a nuclear reactor powering this robot and a switch to turn it into a nuclear bomb. (Reactors and bombs are essentially the same, right?) We have a plasma gun arm. We have a jet engine in the elbow to make a ‘rocket punch’. What else to we need?”
“A giant sword.”
“Yes! You never know when the robot might need that!”

On some level, this movie depresses me. It is a mindless kaleidoscope of CGI but for what ends? Is this just a distraction from our miserable lives? What are we missing that Pacific Rim provides? Perhaps it is that we feel the need for escape. Maybe the social, political, and economic realities we face are too depressing, so we need a generic, positive, flashy escape.

I wonder if we can read Pacific Rim from an environmental position. Let’s say the aliens represent pollution and fossil fuels. The kaiju (aliens) resemble dinosaurs and they come from beneath the ocean floor (like oil) and threaten Mankind. Their blue, oily blood is a corrosive waste let in their path. We need the assistance of nuclear energy to defeat the monsters. Granted, the hero denotes the nuclear reactor to destroy the aliens. That’s not how reactors work; you can’t just flip a switch and make another Hiroshima. So this type of solution might make you think nuclear energy is a fearful thing but it does rescue the world. It is indeed the reactor, not the bomb, which saves humanity.

I do appreciate a silly action movie that isn’t trying to be anything but a silly action movie. But just because a movie is good at being mediocre isn’t reason to give it anything higher than a mediocre score. If Pacific Rim was a food it would be really bad junk food. Substitute whatever floats your boat: a double Baconator from Wendy’s or a XXL Grilled Stuff Burrito from Taco Bell or a vat of nacho cheese or whatever. If you are going to go see this, don’t. Don’t go see this please, maybe if enough people abstain better movies will come out next year. Though, we may be a bit late. To extend the food analogy, you know how when you are eating tasty junk food you say “Oh man, this is so bad but so good!” Pacific Rim is kinda like that...but without the good.… Expand

Plot is basic- giant monstrous sea creatures have risen after long hibernation and we are in their way. To wage the war humans around the world have collaborated to create giant robot suits called jaegers which need a pair of human pilots to run. The customary get to meet, training and first battle chaos scenes are present though thankfully the human characters are fleshed out well enough you realize they're not just time fillers until the robot mayhem starts. Idris Elba and Charlie Hunnan are good enough to fit right in and bring a certain likeability while at it. This is good entertainment.(Good action movie with some great sequences).… Expand

It has to do with the above phrase: “just because.” As I mentioned, studios today seem to need their blockbusters to mean something (or at least, pretend to mean something, which is usually as far as they get), but a fundamental part of the appeal of the film medium has always been its ability to show us sights or feats that are impossible in the real world, for no other reason than to provoke in us that wonderful reaction of gleeful amazement. Practically as soon as film was invented, a French stage magician named Georges Méliès was using rudimentary special effects and editing tricks to wow his viewers. His films had plots, but as in a magic show, the primary goal was to astound. Similarly, the great silent-era comedian Buster Keaton became famous for his remarkable stunts, many of which would have killed him had he screwed them up. His film The General was already hilarious; was that death-defying stunt with the railroad ties really necessary? No, it wasn’t, but he did it anyway, because it’s awesome."

Everything (pretty much the equivalent of the apocalypse) begins in 2020. I guess we can be thankful that we fortunately didn't have to face monster aliens last year. It's always good to put things into perspective.

Characters are awesome: they all have their story, their little plot justifying their presence in the army of robots. The marshall (Idris Elba) appear to be particularly attaching as his role gets further from the classic military head of the missions. His acting is perfect by the way. Every character is linked in a way or another to multiple protagonists, making the cast and the acting really rich and varied.

Special effects are quite decent even with today's look. There are obviously a lot of giants fights but I felt like it was not the major part of the movie which appeared not to be a dull and effortless action movie. Jokes are ambitious and funny. Let's just have a little thought for underwater fauna and flora who are completely destroyed as the movie goes on. The original score and the main theme are both great but the last quickly becomes repetitve.… Expand

Let's be honest here .... when you come to watch this you know what you are getting. A giant mecha movie of humans fighting giant monsters. I love this movie. Awesome characters, amazing concept, cool as hell action. It may seem like a meaningless, run of the mill action to most, but to a trained eye, it has nuance that you wouldn't be able to get elsewhere. ExtremelyI love this movie. Wow, what an incredible movie. I enjoyed the effects more than those in Avatar and the movie has the best 3D effects I've ever seen. There were a few moments where I was on the edge of my seat and the fighters made moves that just flooredWow, what an incredible movie. Hope it does well at the box office. I enjoyed it, there was a lot of entertaining fight sequences, but they were a little marred by the overuse of rain effects. Either way, solid summer flick.

Nonsense. The graphics team deserves a lot of praise, but this movie was not well thought out at all. One of the best "pop-corn movies" ever. This is the reason to go to a cinema. Spectacular in every way, but only and only if you are buying all this hugely ridiculous story. If you cringe at a first thought of "another monster/robot movie", you might just want to stay away or take a risk to see it, but you wouldn't get much else than amazing visuals, huge beautifully staged fights, great detail in everything: environment, cities, robots, monsters (who are all different, btw). The main problem is characters, I must say, who are feeling generic in many ways. Not always do you feel compelled by them and care this much as you should've presumably. And nevertheless, this movie rocked so so much! I felt like 8 years old while watching this spectacle of a movie. But the main thing is that you just have to buy this stuff wholesale, otherwise you wont enjoy it a bit.… Expand

Pacific Rim: It wasn't perfect but it was damn good. Pacific Rim doesn't try to be anything that it's not and that is why this movie is pretty awesome. Borrowing from Godzilla, Neon Genesis, and a several other films and stories, Pac Rim manages to create a believable world with characters that you actually care for by the movies end. The characters were well thought out and the actors playing them knew their roles in this film. Now don't expect "Oscar award winning" performances, but they did their jobs well. One nice thing was that Pac Rim is a self contained story and, admirably, does not blatantly set itself up for a franchise. Pac Rim is not without it's faults but I went with zero expectations and left really enjoying the film. I would even venture to say it is one, if not THE, best sci fi flick out this year (and there have been several)! If you like Giant Monsters, Giant Robots, good sci fi with a healthy dose of apocalyptic threats, then go see it. You'll have a great time!… Expand

This movie is full of cliché, but every element of it is on the right place. The robots and monsters look realistic. Overall the movie is decent if you do not expect a twisted storyline and deep characters.

After seeing the trailers and talking it over with a couple friends of mine, I wasn't really excited for it, but then July 12th drew closer and closer, I was getting more and more excited. After watching it I was shocked on how well it was put together. CGI was pretty good. I mean who doesn't like giant bad ass robots fighting these ugly looking aliens. Any kid would enjoy this movie. Maybe not little kids that might have nightmares over the aliens as they will be afraid to swim. Overall it was actually funny, interesting, action packed (except for the middle for like 30 minutes), but other than that it was well worth seeing. Go see it kids and whoever else. Whoever gave this movie under a 6 is a dumbass and/or don't have a sense of a kid side in them… Expand

PACIFIC RIM is all of it combined and multiplied at least five times. One of the greates and most underestimated director of our time Guillermo Del Toro has done one of the most incredible sci-fi movies in late 100 years. It is not Space Odyssey by Kubrick, Not a War of Worlds by Spielberg, or Nolan's Inception and anything else. It is an alien invasion on high profile. It is a hidden dangerous, comes from the abyss of our world. It is science, why two pilots? You will know and will be shocked. Why Kaiju? Keep calm and just watch.
Does it cost 2 hours? Yes it does. It has everything from humor to drama, from love to honor. Visually Spectacular. Joyfully directed, perfectly performed characters by Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam and ROn Pearlman. So Amazing storyline and visual show. great score. You will not have an opportunity to get some popcorn, cause you will not be able to taker your eyes away from it.… Expand

He wanted to make a fun movie about robots fighting giant monsters, because he loves those kinds of movies. And that's exactly what he did. And that's why you should go watch it.… Expand

That it was my best visiting of cinema in this year. Epic robots, epic pokemons, epic EVERYTHING! And so sweet that none of main characters are AAA-stars. Its must see in the cinema only because huge robots should be HUUGE!
