One of the most unique, fascinating pieces of vampire storytelling. It's real, romantic and bleak. Tilda Swinton & Tom Hiddleston are a brilliant match. Mia Wasikowska gives a brief, yet superb performance.

ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE made me swoon. I really don't like Jarmusch's films, in fact, I pretty much detest them. But this film works on every level. So slight but it knows it. Tilda Swinton is the heart and soul of the picture. Without her it would not be what it is. She's so jaded, lovely, and optimistic all at once. Overall, ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE is a lovely meditation on the history of consciousness, deep love, real love, and the inability of mankind to appreciate it all. Yes, it is very much full of clichés and stereotypes. However, it is also wickedly smart, beautifully shot, filled to the brim with talent and full of cultural witticisms. This is a movie for film lovers and pop culture enthusiasts. It is a vampire film that takes advantage of its time span; cultural references dating back hundreds of years can be found at every corner. Only Lovers Left Alive does not focus on blood and gore, it is not a thriller nor a horror, it doesn't even truly focus on the world of vampires. Instead, Jarmusch studies the eternal, he explores the quiet, perhaps boring, every day life of a modern, intelligent and ancient being who has, quite literally, seen it all.… Expand

They are smart, talented, they know a lot, they admire science, they have a sense of class, but they have their own problems specific to their lifestyle and needs. Both the choice of actors and the way they act are amazing, especially Tilda Swinton, who is a natural "born to be a vampire". The movie brings a very deep atmosphere with both music and decorations. The movie also addresses certain social issues such as the issue of "zombies" or I would say morons in the world around us and the limitedness of our natural resources. The appearance of the vampire sister of the main protagonist somewhat mocks all those other vampire movies by showing us a comparison between the really profound and realistic vampires presented by Jarmusch and their somewhat boring and mentally limited classic counterparts from movies like the Twilight. 10 out of 10.… Expand

The plot is minimalist and what little plot there is plays itself out very slowly, as this is a movie whose dialogue and cinematographic details have to be savored like a fine wine, or at the very least, like the best blood available to middle-aged vampires—which is Type O negative, to be smuggled out of hospital blood banks and paid for with wads of cash. Biting humans is a bit boorish in the twenty-first century, even if one disregards the problem of too many humans harboring microbes and viruses that can make a vampire ill. The two vampires, appropriately named Adam and Eve, are married but spend a lot of time apart to pursue their particular interests and pastimes. The film opens with Eve living in Tangiers where she is at home in a messy apartment cluttered with books from every literary period and in every conceivable language. She speaks all those languages fluently, including Arabic and Japanese, and she can speed-read a book by moving her hand lightly and swiftly over the page.

Adam, however, is of a different intellectual bent. He is a musician living in Detroit who writes hauntingly evocative rock & roll compositions, having evolved away from the classical music that he wrote hundreds of years ago. He claims he gave Schubert the adagio to a symphony without ever expecting acknowledgment, for after all, as their friend Kit (John Hurt) notes, getting the work out there is the most important thing. At this stage in Adam's life, fame no longer interests him anyway, and it would attract too much attention, so he labors alone in a run-down house that is as messy as Eve's, and he is nostalgic for the hard rock of the sixties and early seventies. With the help of a human acquaintance (Anton Yelchin), who gets paid handsomely for his services, Adam collects vintage guitars from the acid rock era. He rarely leaves his house except for the odd trip to the hospital to pick up a fresh supply of blood from the bribed doctor who helps him (Jeffrey Wright). Adam always wear tight black pants, T-shirts and a leather jacket, and has dark hair hanging in his eyes. Eve sports a thick head of long white hair that makes her blonder than blond, a beautiful albino. They can only go out at night and even under tungsten lighting, they wear stylish sunglasses. They are slender, elegant, and attractive—looking like a very hip couple who somehow survived the drug-addicted sixties with their personal style and their political philosophy intact. Together, after Eve leaves Tangier to join Adam in Detroit, they exude power and a high-voltage kind of energy.

Things get complicated when Eve's little sister (Mia Wasikowska), an impulsive and reckless vampire, shows up for a visit. Because of her intrusion, Adam and Eve are forced to abandon the safety of Adam's reclusive life in Detroit. They flee back to Tangier, where they find their precious blood is in short supply, forcing them for the first time since the fifteenth century to consider more radical forms of procurement. This low-level plot, however, is not the point of the film. Adam and Eve are observers of human behavior and are far superior to the average human in intelligence and wisdom, as well as bereft of all ego because having lived for 500 years means that their greatest achievements are behind them, and they have nothing left to prove. Instead, they are scholars of art history, music, literature, and architecture. With hands so sensitive that they have to remain encased in gloves, Eve can tell the age of an object merely by touching it. Their running commentary, always caustic and ironic, shows shrewd insight into the complicated nature of human nature. They are fine connoisseurs of antiques and historic buildings, taking great pleasure in admiring the craftsmanship of the good, old days. They live for the pleasure of the moment, the satisfaction of drinking only the best blood, the odd creative project for which they cannot take credit, and the romance of their eternal relationship with each other.

Tilda Swinton is a terrifically blasé vampire who understands intuitively that after 500 years, it's the little things that make life meaningful. Tom Hiddleston is equally brilliant at being droll, although not nearly as cheerful as his wife, and positively depressed, if not suicidal, about the vampiric condition. Their vampiric state is not quite evil or damned, but more like the resignation of aging hippies whose heyday is over and has left them mostly with a lot of memories, anecdotes, and artifacts. Their damnation is more about their jaded pessimism, and their intrinsic understanding that humans have somehow lost their way and cannot evolve or mature, which the couple see so clearly without being able to do anything about it. That, more than anything else, is truly the vision of the damned.… Expand

With their other worldly features both Tom Hiddlestone and Tilda Swinton certainly have the right look and they deliver rich characterisations as the vampire lovers living in seperate dwellings in different countries. Jim Jarmusch's best film to date (I generally dislike his work) is certainly a different take on a tired genre and he allows proceedings to generate charm at a leisurely pace. The production design and music capture the dark milieu creating bags of atmosphere, and the ending is sublime. Be sure to invite this amusingly off beat tale into your life.… Expand

Love the simmering feel of this film - Hiddleston and Swinton are amazing in it. The juxtaposition of the overnight versions of Detroit and Tangiers is inspired. This is my favorite Jarmusch movie since Broken Flowers.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Jim Jarmusch achieves excellence in Only Lovers Left Alive. This is the most romantic movie made in decades; Jarmusch truly understands how love is expressed in its most pure form. Adam and Eve are two vampire lover, who live apart, they both understand the world in a different way, but this means that they complete each other; there cannot exist one without another, but this has nothing to do with being physically together, it is more about what do they talk and how much they need to communicate. Jarmusch´s cinematography is about contemplation, about creating a world where the most beautiful things are there for you to find them in details. The music composed by SQÜRL band where Jarmusch´s band is sublime, it rounds up the whole underground-intellectual vibe of the movie. Finally Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddelston understood exactly what Jarmusch was creating and took acting to another level.… Expand

Honestly, it is barely a vampire film and is far more of a drama, romance, and thriller. Compelling to the very last drop, Only Lovers Left Alive also serves as a compelling take on musicians, Detroit, the downturn in the economy, science, and famous writers. Together, Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton are phenomenal and have deliciously odd chemistry with one another. Director Jim Jarmusch does a typically great job at handling this odd vampire film that is very nicely paced and incredibly well crafted. Honestly, however, my favorite piece here is the look and style. Incredibly stylish, Only Lovers Left Alive has phenomenal cinematography (especially the lighting) is absolutely phenomenal. The music really accents this style perfectly with this deeply unsettling and laid back musical score for the film. Overall, Only Lovers Left Alive is a thoroughly odd film, but is a truly marvelous work that soars on the back of all its talented creators.… Expand

Tom Hiddleston plays Adam, a centuries-old vampire who, like Anne Rice’s Lestat, is a rock star; but unlike Lestat, he does not seek vain attention, he simply loves the music. He is tired of living, however, and contemplates ending his long life due to its futility. He is frustrated with the direction human culture has taken, and the scenery of Detroit reflects the world as Adam perceives it. The futility of human effort, so short-lived, short-sighted. Ugly. He is offended by the ugliness of human invention and industry, commenting twice on ugly power lines cluttering the architecture.

He is an inventor, scientist, engineer, who knew Newton, Einstein, Tesla, and is depressed that Tesla’s wireless power grid was discarded in favor of an ugly wired grid. He ponders the choices humans have made for the worse, which led to the world being polluted and ugly. The beautiful works of art are long gone. His love for music and his work are not about ego and image. He wants nothing more than to be left alone, but he does love to create music. He says it is for the art, not the glory.

Tilda Swinton plays Eve, the wife of Adam, who lives in Tangiers, and calls Adam one day after many years. Sensing his depression, she travels to his home in Detroit to cheer him up, and mostly succeeds. She is a marvelous contrast to Adam, with her long, bright white hair next to his long, shiny black locks. I have less to say about her since she seemed to me a contrast to Adam, long partners in love who separate at times so they don’t become bored with each other. Decades will do that, let alone centuries.

There are many scenes where Adam and Eve drive through Detroit, marveling at the beautiful architecture and loathing how it has decayed. This seemed to me at first to represent the destruction of Earth’s environment. The world is a mess, and only someone who saw it when it was beautiful could appreciate how bad it has become.

But as the movie progressed, I believe their names give away the writer's intention. Not environmentalism, exactly, but a version of the literal Adam and Eve story. Who were similarly immortal until they fell from grace. They lived in a beautiful world and sin brought their downfall.

Perhaps Eve’s sister, Ava (Mia Wasikowska), represents the tempter, the serpent, the devil, who brought “sin” into their lives. This doesn’t quite work, but it’s my best guess at the scriptwriter’s intention. She consumes all their “good blood” and then Eve invites Adam to leave his home behind (The Garden of Eden) and come with her to Algiers (outside the garden), where she promises her supplier will give them good blood, and she’ll buy him new instruments. He’ll leave his old collection behind. This, to me, represents the loss upon leaving the garden. The loss of beauty and tranquility, but also the loss of futility and boredom for a new adventure.

The forbidden fruit is eaten in the final scene. What happens next? They bemoan the lack of pure blood, discuss how humans blood is full of “muck” and watered down. But they must eat. Is this a good or bad thing? Hard to say, up to the viewer, I expect. I took it to mean, a new start, a rebirth, but it might represent “tilling the ground” to raise food. Whereas, in the garden, they merely picked the fruit and ate.

Adam repeatedly calls humans zombies and sleepers, not due to their nature as mortals but due to their lack of attention, their stumbling along through life taking whatever they can get and not thinking about solving any problems. I found it hilarious reading the negative reviews of this film. Such dull viewers are like the literal-minded zombies in the film, who simply can’t comprehend art; they might be presented with an apple by a serpent in a garden and see nothing more to the situation than the edibility of the apple. This is a philosophical film that spawns questions in the attentive viewer. I was fascinated by the questions raised in me.… Expand

It's slow and monotonous so as the soundtrack most of the time so you have to be patient. Wasikowska 's character deserved more space, specially because she gives life to the script with her rebellius and funny personality, and the end doesn't let you satisfied too. It's like there is something missing, something huge to happen. On the other hand, you'll see that the way this film goes is exactly the way its story develops and that's it. Only Lovers Left Alive is a fine romantic story and a great movie for the ones who enjoy watching vampires. I’m compelled to write a review having just watched this 6 years after it was released because I’m utterly confused as to why I enjoyed this very boring movie. Jarmusch's films don’t typically appeal to me, but the premise here had a lot of potential and drew me in with a promising trailer. It’s strange how well Jim can write and direct the aspects of capturing the mundane and that is almost all you get of the solitaire life of the few main characters you get on screen. There’s a nice balance of seeing people who live their short lives and others who hide themselves away to protect their longevity. It’s never pointed or polarizing as a story point, but then this film seems to serve as just a tiny snapshot of these beings lives. If I had to guess why I like it at all is the music and performance of music are really fantastic and the acting really draws you a complete picture of how depressing and devastating living an unnaturally long life could be. It’s not something I walked away from thinking how fantastic it was, but I’d still recommend giving it a shot.… Expand

Only Lovers Left Alive Only Lovers Left Alive is a character driven romantic drama about two bloodsuckers whose immortal life has led them wiser and more closer than ever no matter how much tired they get, from life itself. The chemistry between Hiddleston and Swinton is throughly competent and satisfactory to the core to fuel this complex and thought out drama. Not only the concept is potentially creative but that idea is never taken for granted, the storytelling may be gnarly but its ability to meddle with contradictory emotions and nature like positive and negative, is just bravado of work. The background score is stunningly scored, the songs are aptly motivating, the composing is beautifully performed, the production and art designing is plausible with mature camera work, amazing cinematography and fine editing. Hiddleston is reserved and confidence with looks in his eyes that is enough to portray the love for his better half, that is Swinton in here who too is performing her career's one of the best portrayal along with bratty Wasikowska and as Swinton mentions, "sweet" Yelchin. The jagged script with an eye on the horizon structure that not only helps keep things short but also tugs out all the commercial aspects of it leaving the audience with all the nutritious husky bits that is just mesmerizing to encounter. And with such a script on his mind, Jarmusch is practically reciting poem through his metaphorical execution skills that he tosses in each of those sequences that are layered and thought provoking. The innocence behind the love track between the lead characters, the gem like moments depicted to project their relationship and the stake at the heart that makes the viewers bleed and breathe are the high points of the feature. In a bubble of pathos mechanism, Only Lovers Left Alive is just pure innocence brewed with mere sweet emotions.… Expand

I thought this was a very engrossing watch. Tilda Swinton does particularly well as an unsurprisingly pale and lethargic, yet very stylish and 'hip' contemporary vampire, although Tom Hiddleston also plays his part well, perhaps not as goodI thought this was a very engrossing watch. Tilda Swinton does particularly well as an unsurprisingly pale and lethargic, yet very stylish and 'hip' contemporary vampire, although Tom Hiddleston also plays his part well, perhaps not as good but well enough certainly. John Hurt playing Christopher Marlowe was also interesting.

I liked the scenes in North Africa, showing her walking along streets slowly, the orange lighting making her almost blend into the scenery and the use of traditional music definitely adds to the atmosphere. It's a mysterious watch to a degree...it has a feel of wonder mysticism about it. I suppose I'd maybe compare it to What We Do In The Shadows, only its less straight comedy (some moments may well make you smirk but I wouldn't say its laugh out loud funny as such) and more of a quirky drama type film overall. The presence of a teenage sibling I found amusing. It's mostly worth seeing for the atmospheric feel it gives off. Its memorable for the soundtrack and the visual elements first and foremost, rather than the main plot as such, I reckon. It's worth seeing though, yes, so I would recommend it.… Expand
