Action scenes are ruined with constant jump cuts, The plot isn't even the least bit interesting and the pacing is crippling slow. It's one of a few Bond films that could use proper editing to trim down a few needlessly long scenes to quicken the run-time and improve the pacing. That may not fix much but it would certainly help. All in all it is a passable Bond film with a lot of heart, not the very worst in the series but certainly not the best. https://latetothegame.blog/2019/02/07/key-movies-of-my-life-james-bond-edition-on-her-majestys-secret-service-1969/

And again the action scenes are ridiculously unrealistic and therefore annoying sometimes. All the hand fights are also boring. Lazenby is ok, but his oneliners were bad.
But Savalas as Blofeld was great.

Though George Lazenby is a one-off Bond actor, he does a good job in the interim of Sean Connery's break as the character. The story is fleshed out and the action great for the time.

Having watched 25 Bonds from Dr.No to Skyfall, I place this one at 9/25.

This is a movie that gets a lot of flak for having had a completely inexperienced actor replacing then-only actor of the series, Sean Connery.

Let me say that it's actually quite irrelevant: while George Lazenby was indeed inexperienced, several of the actors around him, particularly his love interest, are also perfectly poor actors that do not manage to run the movie one bit.

The biggest problem is not Lazenby's acting, it's that they're asking him to play a romance with a lady who also doesn't manage to pour any belief in the romance.

With the romance falling flat, we are left with a very dumb plot where Blofeld, who in the previous movie was a criminal mastermind holding power over many of the main villains of previous movies, now is literally inviting complete strangers into his secret lair in the Alps so he can be recognised...as a Baronet.

That's about the same as wanting people to recognise your 300$ lottery ticket by inviting them to your vault that's filled with massive stacks of heroin...

Besides the just silly plot and reasons, Lazenby does do a decent job and a lot of the more experienced actors also carry the movement, but this movie has just too many strange points. The action is almost non-violent, when Blofeld finds out that Bond is not a Baronet expert but an agent, he has him sent to the machine room. Not a dangerous death room or anything, just a...room that's a bit ugly and dirty. The fights are uncharacteristically bloodless and almost nobody dies, it feels like some sort of baby version of James Bond, and the main plot of the villain is to talk with some sort of God Voice to beautiful girls while they sleep. Because talking to them in their sleep with the God Voice somehow makes them totally subservient to his commands.

Nevermind that it totally feels like a bad sexual fantasy, it's also particularly stupid when any of the girls could just not be sleeping at the time. Also, Bond takes less than 2 minutes to escape his room/cell in the Secret Lair, of course, but how come the teenage girl in the room next to his can do the exact same, with the exact same method? When your super secret lair has security that a 19 year old can bypass, and you punish the secret agent by sending him to the corner, I think the talent of the actors is the least of the concerns to have...

Still, despite the strange sexual fantasy plot, the baby violence, the beginner actors, this is a movie that has its own flair, its originality, it dares to try a real romance with Bond, it goes for a lot of interesting ideas, it introduced a lot of good characters, it's memorable even months after seeing it, and even if it ultimately isn't that good, it still entirely deserves to be seen once.

It was disliked at release but over time it was regarded as a pretty good entry in the franchise. For me it is also a good James Bond movie and I liked that they tried something different. It was a difficult situation as every new James Bond actor would be compared to Sean Connery who is for many the definitive James Bond. While there was no bad James Bond actor there will always be discussions what is acceptable as James Bond or how to do the role. For me I think George Lazenby delivers a good performance and would have won the fans over if this was not his only movie in this role. Remember even Sean Connery did improve a lot since his first James Bond movie. The story starts when James Bond drives along a country road when he is passed by another car. When he follows it he finds it empty and saves the female driver from suicide. He is shortly after attacked and the women vanishes. Because of this his interest is awakened and he follow this lead. He is drawn into a new adventure as a new menace for the world unfolds as there is far more behind the scenes as it seems. It mind sound boring and inferior first but it is clever as the antagonist have learned from their past mistakes and keep it smaller and quieter but not less dangerous. It is the kind of menace many will ignore as there are no indicators like missing nuclear weapons, spacecrafts or rumors about superweapons / dangerous technologies. For itself it is a great plan because it is as small, easily to hide and most devastating. Then there are the actors. I already praised George Lazenby and he deserves it. He did what he could making all stunts he was capable of by himself (He even broke his arm if I remember correctly) and even cried for a special and emotional scene in a manner that improved the impact by far. It was not used by the director as James Bond does not cry. I think it was a mistake here. It is a misconception that real man done cry. The there is Diana Rigg who is one of my favorite actresses. She won me over as Emma Peel in the TV series “The Avengers” (Not to be confused with the Marvel brand or the abysmal movie remake which has strangely Sean Connery in a role). If you ever look for a poster girl for strong independent woman even before that was a thing you need look no further. Telly Savalas is my favorite Ernst Starvo Blofeld even when he is forever memorized as Kojak. Bonus points for Gabriele Ferzetti and Ilse Steppat. There were of cause some problems that are always mentioned with the movie. During production there was a rumored conflict between George Lazenby and Diana Rigg that both denied ever happened. There were problems with the director Peter Hunt and George Lazenby as they disagreed a lot on top of other smaller issues. This lead to the return of Sean Connery and it could have been from 4 to 7 additional movies with George Lazenby according to different sources. The movie was filmed in Swiss and one certain place is actually a restaurant that still exists and has also a James Bond exhibition. All in all it gave a good look and realistic setting. I must also remark they did something no other James Bond movie did and a shocking end that will left you shattered. I think this is the hardest hit James Bong has ever endured. Overall this is a really good entry in the franchise and I will give it a high rating. It would have been an interesting ride if George Lazenby had the chance of additional movies. Expand

Lazenby is bringing a lot of things new on the table, we may not like it or want it, but, hey, at least, it is refreshing.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service

Hunt is on a hunt. It is not well planned or equipped. In fact, if anything, it almost feels like an ambush while it clearly isn't. Peter Hunt, the director, has got one thing right for sure. The flirt of the game, it isn't thrilling, but is incredibly exciting to see these characters tease each other and us getting pumped for them. Such a connection was difficult to establish especially since the face of our beloved character was replaced.

And not only does it show the utter confident in their script but also on the actor George Lazenby who may not deliver complete list of requirements but somehow in its goofiness, it is an improvement to the previous installment- the film, not the Bond, NO, NEVER. But that's not saying much, is it, now. Clocking for more than two hours, the film asks a lot of patience from us, and against all expectations, the first and last act is mind numbing. The real treat lies in the middle chapter where the flirting is turned to 11 and watching them gleefully hide and reveal what they care for, is yes, fun to encounter.

If thought about, Lazenby, technically, isn't conjuring the essence of the Bond. He isn't confident, he cannot pull off even a one-liner let alone pull out a gun with an electrifying speed or handle his drink. He is good with girls though, so many, in here, some good and some bad, and frankly, the manipulative nature of their tracks did lure me in, instead of being aware of it. On Her Majesty's Secret Service we can see a lot of good "old style" methods that keeps you invested in the work days, as soon as you're on a holiday, it looks for cheap thrills; the very theme of action is off putting in here.

Nevertheless, it was acclaimed at the time.Directed by Peter R. Hunt, produced by Harry Saltzman and Albert Broccoli and with screenplay by Richard Maibaum, this is the sixth 007 franchise movie and one of the least considered by fans today. Nevertheless, it was acclaimed at the time. For the Portuguese, it contains a special affection because it was the only Bond film to be shot in Portugal so far (except "The Man with the Golden Gun", that was partially shot in Macau, which was then under Portuguese administration).

In this film, the British agent on holiday in Lisbon, saves the life of a woman who tried to commit suicide. Later, he discovers that the girl is the countess Teresa di Vicenzo, ending kidnapped by her father, Draco, head of the mafia of Corsica, which asks him to help her daughter, marrying her and giving her a new life. In exchange, he agrees to give the location of Blofeld, who the MI6 has been looking for. It will not be necessary: seeing the mutual interest, Draco accepts to collaborate with Bond, which starts dating Tracy. The investigation leads Bond to Switzerland, where the villain, disguised as Count Bleuchamp, manages a clinic while seeks to legitimize his nobility. Disguised as expert in heraldry, Bond infiltrates in the enemy's nest and quickly discovers his evil plans.

This film is quite different from those that preceded it: despite having the same blend of action and beautiful women, the film has something that we will not see again until very recent years: Bond truly falls in love by a woman who not only loves him but also combines with him: they are the perfect couple as they love each other and also love the danger, sharing the adventure and allowing the risk to unite them. Finally, Bond was defeated by love after several films seducing women. Another difference of this movie from all the others is the fact that its the first film without Sean Connery. Many people saw the character as linked to this actor who thought it wasn't possible to give it to another actor but George Lazenby showed that this wasn't true and made a good performance in the role of 007, probably the biggest role of his career. In fact, the biggest mistake of his career was refusing to continue it for more seven films. Another important note in this film, especially when compared to that preceded immediately, is the absence of the Q- Branch inventions, a director's choice, who want to follow the Fleming's original story more closely.

In addition to the central cast inherited from previous films, George Lazenby plays Bond, Diana Rigg gave life to Tracy, ephemeral wife of 007, Gabriele Ferzetti played Draco and Telly Savalas gave life to Blofeld. The soundtrack, including the instrumental opening, was composed by John Barry and includes "We Have All the Time in the World", the last musical recording of Louis Armstrong before his death.

And it was a well-done action. The tempo keeps going without stopping. I was totally hooked by the last third. It is a very different kind of Bond movie.
