Action, suspense, thriller with a huge twist in the end. I absolutely enjoyed this western. Great story with terrific performances.

True Gritty western feel, with some emotions within it. The plot isn't too unpredictable but never the less entertaining.

It's poorly written, shot, directed, and edited. Tim Blake Nelson apparently showed up to set; that's about the most that can be said about his performance. Stephen Dorff was truly enjoyable; you can almost imagine you're watching a decent movie during the moments when Stephen Dorff and only Stephen Dorff is on the screen. Beyond that, every performance fails miserably and every single moment as written and executed suggests that if this wasn't the writer-director's first attempt at a film, it should probably be their last. Always playing second in many films, the veteran actor finally has the opportunity to shine as a lead in this gritty western. The premise is simple: a farmer and his son rescue a shady guy who may or may not be who he claims to be, so they're forced to protect him and their home from a group of ruthless and greedy men. You could see that this is the role that Blake Nelson probably waited for a long time. And although the story is as basic as it could be, it manages to develop briefly but effectively themes like honor, the nuances between good and evil, and the complicated relationship between a strict father and a headstrong son. Oh, and just wait for the awesome twist ending. Expand

The film sticks to the western genre, and would be a bit better if it weren't for the slow pace at the beginning. However, the last 40 minutes do their best to come to the rescue.

If you're a fan of westerns, I highly recommend it, and if not, it's worth a look for Tim Blake Nelson's acting work.

I was not exalted by this intimist and masculine, crepuscular and minimalist approach to the classic (micro-)western, from "The Searchers" to "Unforgiven", from Andrew Dominik ("The Assassination of Jesse James") to now too many others, deconstructing its mythology or taking it as a metacinematographic example to talk about the present that unredeemably obliges to settle accounts with a repressed past.

The best part of the film is easily the third act which features multiple twists and plenty of action. Unfortunately, this couldn't completely make for the pacing issues in the first two acts, which are extremely slow. The main emotional tentpole of the story should be between Henry and his son, but this fell flat for me because of some bad acting from the boy cast as the son. This film is still worth a view because of its dynamite third act and a great performance in the titular role from Tim Blake Nelson, but it certainly isn't a masterpiece by any means. Expand

Good movie! And that is rare these days. A great example of a good movie because of a good story and well played characters. More of that pls, I really liked it!
