Nymphomaniac is not great. Lars Von Trier spoon-feeds a lot of visual and themes to the viewer that used to be so subtle in his previous movies. The script sucks. I don't know how else to put it. The script sucks. I don't know how else to put it. Lengthy dialogues about fly fishing, lines that people would never say even in surrealism, and overly repetitious scenes turn Nymphomaniac into a slow slog. In spite of some really good acting performances, it's hard to care about the characters as they are written. The movie looks strangely unfinished at parts, and that doesn't look stylistic, but lazy. However, some sequences are gripping, and Von Trier does at parts offer up a good view on human sexuality. If you're brave, I think you can find something here. Expand

The movie had a good beginning. it captured my interest, but when we have the scene with uma Thurman, the movie began to be non believable and the acting was over the top. I expected the movie to be a lot better and more deep.

Not at all deserving the fuss it has provoked: it fails to shock and it fails to bring a good story. The truly good parts are Stellan Skarsgard's character's comparisons.

Vol 1 does not work for me. It feels often forced, often boring, sometimes intriguing. I found vol 2 more entertaining although also more flawed and inconsistent.

The unrealistic sexual theme is irritating, if not unbearable. The whole film through, you just can't believe the older guy can be interested in the tale of the highly unsympathetic nympho he rescued. It gets even worse at the end, when an allegory is made between polyphonic voices and sexual life. From that moment I just had to laughed, at last.

I'm giving a 4 cause the acting is actually good enough (Shia Laboeuf, Uma Thurman), but nonetheless this is the Lars Von Trier movie you need to avoid at any cost. (See Melancholia... much better)

The acting and sound effects are top notch, the narration is stimulating and the subject matter - which is female sexuality - is wonderfully explored through many distinguishable aspects. However, there are plenty of gaps in how the story is told, some of which leave me unsatisfied and confused. Nymphomaniac does not unveil how the protagonist deals with impending circumstances on a consistent enough basis. Some of the story-telling also come across as pseudo-intellectual babble, the comparisons made by the deuteragonist being the culprit on most occasions. The mother and father barely develop across the duration of the film as well. But, Nymphomaniac surely makes for a unique and emotionally compelling watch. Expand

Good movie, but the rating should be closer to 69 percent. For sure would say Shia has the worst O face.

Nymphomaniac is the second movie of Von Trier's "Depression thrilogy" and it is probabily the worst of his entire filmography.
