This South African psychological thriller has a gripping score that intensifies every scene in which it is present, and when it disappears, the silence is all the more excruciating. While the film is not as gruesome as the works of Quentin Tarantino, it is graphic enough to convey the brutality of its antagonists. Typically while screening a film, I find satisfaction in correctly predicting the next plot point. However, 'Number 37' had me constantly second-guessing myself; I frankly had no idea what was to come, and that was fun for me. While this film is a clear homage to Alfred Hitchcock’s 1954 film Rear Window, it was able to fully incorporate modernity through a relevant reflection of crime in South African slums. The blend of traditional American filmmaking and a highly stylized vision makes for a truly authentic piece of cinema. Expand

The plot thickens when a pair of binoculars are introduced, and the boyfriend Randal begins to witness crude and horrific transgressions take place from across the street. Using people and utilizing heavy amounts of bribery shape this suspense filled thriller at the beginning of the new years movie cycle. Truly a powerful film that I wanted to watch again and again. Borrowing the main premise from Alfred Hitchcock’s classic “Rear Window”, director Nosipho Dumisa creates an original storyline that is inherently suspenseful in every scene, beginning the film with surprisingly graphic visuals as a foreshadowing of what’s to come. Elements of suspense and chaos are present throughout, following protagonists Randall and Pam’s attempts at saving themselves, each scheme more desperate and reckless than the one before. This film stands out among other crime thrillers, many of which resort to cliché “bad guys vs. good guys” conflicts that almost always lead to a predictable outcome. So it is not the case however, with Number 37. Would highly recommend this film to those who can appreciate a stylistic, modern thriller about greed, corruption, and the human instinct of survival. It is a well-constructed, high-tension thriller that was both well written and directed by Nosiph Dumisa. The film is brilliantly executed and is one of the best thrillers I have seen in a while. It tells the story of Randal, a low-level criminal recently crippled by an injury sustained in an illicit deal gone wrong. Wheelchair-bound and cooped up in his apartment in a rough Cape Town neighborhood, with no one to support him except his devoted girlfriend Pam, Randal is heavily indebted to his former gang mate and sociopathic loan-shark, Emmie. With no way of paying the money back, he despairs for himself and Pam as Emmie violently demonstrates what will happen if Randal doesn't settle his debt before the end of the week. The film features some great acting from both Ally and Rockman who give very emotive performances. My favorite part of the film was probably the sound design which really brings up the suspense of the film. I recommend this film to Hitchcock fans for the way it transplants the premise of “Rear Window” in a contemporary setting. Expand

This film is one of the most suspenseful movies I have seen and director Nosipho Dumisa shows no mercy when it comes to easing up on the suspense. I thoroughly enjoyed this film and can’t praise it enough! I recommend this film to anyone who likes suspenseful movies with clever and artistic writing and an insanely unpredictable plot. Expand

After Randal witnesses a murder he tries to use this horrible act of crime to his advantage, and use it to forward himself and Pam out of this crime ridden world they have to live in. To add to the chaos, Randal struggles through life as a paraplegic, but after receiving a pair of binoculars, his life changes forever. Pam really stood out in this movie because of how strong headed, and willing she was to help her one true love, when he couldn’t help himself. Time and time again she put her life on the line for him, and herself, and I have an everlasting amount of respect for her, forever team Pam. Highly suggest this movie for anyone out there who likes to see a badass woman take charge and get stuff done. Expand

Set in South Africa, the film features a low-level criminal who, after losing access to his legs and becoming wheelchair bound, is given a pair of binoculars by his girlfriend to occupy him while he’s cooped up in his apartment. One day, the protagonist witnesses a murder which he tries to use to his own advantage to free himself from the grasp of a violent and malevolent loan shark. Something I really liked about 37 is that it was able to set the tone right from the get-go and keep its pacing throughout the entirety of the movie. Right away, the film’s opening scene, which introduces the protagonist and his dealings with the aforementioned loan shark, is graphic and intense enough to rival several film climax’s I’ve seen. However, it goes without saying that Number 37 is certainly able to deliver on its own climax (but I won’t give any spoilers here). Something else that really stood out from 37, was its incredible set design. Watching the film, I truly would’ve believed that the whole film was shot on location or that the film crew just borrowed some peoples apartments and told them to leave it “as is”. It made the film so much more immersive and I never felt myself being pullout away from the movie or having the cinematic illusion break. Nevertheless, 37 is a fantastically gritty and suspenseful love story to Rear Window, that delivers on its pacing and immersion. I fully recommend. Expand

The film depicts Randal’s desperation growing as it is not only his fate on the line but that of his girlfriend, Pam ( Monique Rockman) as well. Furthermore, I loved that the film took place for the most part in one setting, which gave director Nosipho Dumisa the ability to focus more on the build of the characters’ relationships with one another and the suspenseful story that she was able to fully deliver. I highly recommend you check this one out! Expand

In the movies I’ve seen the main criminal is usually a hardcore criminal that murders and robs anyone and anything. But in “Number 37” the main character is neither of those. Randall, the main guy, somehow finds himself in debt to a gangster, but is paralyzed from the waist down and must navigate via wheelchair. Although in a wheelchair he still finds himself in more trouble with a different gang because of blackmail. Now, this seemingly harmless man finds himself in the middle of a criminal triangle and only he can protect him and his loved ones. If you enjoy thrillers, I’d watch this for sure! Expand

The film’s main character Randal is a recent paraplegic that has been involved in low-level criminal activity for quite some time. Now that he is disabled and wheelchair bound, his life is completely different than how it used to be and is stuck in his quiet apartment. As a token of her love, Randal’s girlfriend Pam gifts him a pair of binoculars so Randal can see the outside world. Loving this gift, Randal finds himself constantly observing the surroundings outside his window and unexpectedly witnesses a murder take place in the apartment across the street. From his darker past, Randal owes a large amount of money to a dangerous and threatening loan shark in which he hopes to pay off by blackmailing the murderers in the neighborhood. Number 37 is a crazy story involving criminal activity, intense and violent action scenes, and a insane plot twists that I would highly recommend watching. Expand
