I can't believe anyone other than a tween girl enjoyed this. Harry Styles can't speak coherently, much less act. I would imagine all the positive reviews on this site are from the aforementioned tweens. It's painful to watch, like pullingI can't believe anyone other than a tween girl enjoyed this. Having read the book a year prior, what first struck me was the way the timeline was restructured. Not in a bad way, just presented differently. Not in a bad way, just presented differently. The characters were less dry and less awkward than in the book. Tom is as charismatic yet prejudice and close-minded, naive and very well cast with Harry. I found I despised Marion significantly less than in the book, her vile actions still present yet less emphasized. The chemistry between Patrick and Tom was palpable. The love scenes were of just that, and very tastefully done. The Tom and Marion ones, however, were viscerally uncomfortable and hard to watch, as intended.
Patrick was amazing. What a performance. Throughout you find yourself feeling so demoralized by his fate.
I found less time was spent on the oppressive nature of the 50s against queer community than the book, although still is drove home quite sternly.… Expand

The advertising makes this film look like a 3-way romance, but this is really a gay love story. Harry Styles (he's the cop) and Emma Corrin are romantic, but their lives are changed when they befriend a museum curator (David Dawson). Since gay sex was illegal in 50s England, that presents the film's other conflict. The story actually starts current day, when the couple is enjoying retirement, and flashes between now and then. Styles continues to demonstrate star power, while the rest of the cast is equally strong. This sort of political tragedy has been done before and this production offers nothing new. Still, it's a quietly compelling look at loss, regret and love.… Expand

rather predictable, yes, but scrupulous in its shaping and the intimacy of the story is compelling - performances are convincing and deeply affecting.

Such a beautiful movie. Couldn't stop thinking about it. The cast is amazing and for me this is definitly a movie that I can watch multiple times without getting bored and i love that.

I thought Michael Grandage and team did a great job bringing this book and important story to life. It really helps to show where some countries have progressed in this area and reminds you how easy (and horrible) it would be to slide backI thought Michael Grandage and team did a great job bringing this book and important story to life. It really helps to show where some countries have progressed in this area and reminds you how easy (and horrible) it would be to slide back there.

The scenery was beautiful, and I thought the switching between time periods was done well. To me, Gina and David were the standouts (I need to watch more of David's work!), and I thought David, Harry, and Rupert did a great job expressing the emotion being felt by their characters. It is truly an ensemble cast and wouldn't work without all 6 of them.

I highly recommend catching this in the theater if it's playing near you and if not, catch on Amazon Prime in November if you have access.… Expand

I've watched it on my country, Brazil. It was really great, everyone on the room loved it and cried along with me. It's my favorite film now, it's so beautifully done, well made, the actors are the greatest and I loved every second about this movie.

Ho letto il libro da cui è tratto il film qualche anno fa ed è diventato immediatamente uno dei miei preferiti, quindi ero davvero curiosa di sapere come avrebbero gestito il tutto. Non sono per niente delusa, anzi, my policeman mi è piaciuto davvero tanto. La fotografia è veramente splendida, gli attori hanno fatto tutti un buon lavoro (le due attrici che hanno interpretato Marion in particolare, secondo me) e in generale è riuscito a farmi provare emozioni simili a quelle che avevo provato leggendo il libro, sono riusciti davvero a coglierne l'essenza e fare un film ottimo. A fine film mi sono resa conto di aver voluto bene ai personaggi, di averli odiati in certi momenti, di aver voluto abbracciarli in altri, e questo perché sono stati ben caratterizzati. Dopo aver conosciuto la storia ti rendi conto che non esiste un antagonista in questo film, riesci a metterti nei panni di tutti e riesci a percepire davvero la semplice voglia di essere amata dal ragazzo che ama di Marion, la sofferenza che prova Patrick nel dover vivere nascondendosi come se fosse un criminale soltanto per essere sé stesso e al contrario la difficoltà di Tom nell'accettare sé stesso e vivere la sua vita come vuole e non come gli altri (per via della sua posizione da poliziotto, ad esempio) pensano che debba viverla, e quindi ti affezioni a tutti i personaggi. Il finale poi.. magnifico. La scena in cui Marion e Tom vedono quella coppia di ragazzi e Tom si mette a piangere cercando di non farsi vedere dalla moglie mi ha fatto davvero emozionare (se non sbaglio tra l'altro nel libro questa parte non c'è). Finalmente, dopo ormai tanti anni, l'omosessualità non è più punibile dalla legge, i due giovani ragazzi possono amarsi alla luce del sole e Tom è felice che la situazione sia cambiata in Inghilterra, ma anche profondamente triste per non aver potuto vivere la sua vita con Patrick. Quando Marion va via e Tom si avvicina a Patrick, accarezzandolo come aveva fatto la primissima volta, l’attore che interpreta Patrick da grande è stato veramente magistrale nel fare capire a chi guarda quanto finalmente si sentisse sollevato dopo così tanti anni, mi ha fatto provare una tenerezza incredibile. E poi immediatamente la scena cambia e ci fa vedere Patrick da grande e Tom da giovane, a rappresentare la felicità di Patrick nel sentirsi finalmente amato dal suo poliziotto, senza nessun limite. Si vede anche Marion che sorride in taxi, perché finalmente è libera anche lei, libera di poter vivere finalmente una storia (d’amore o altro) che sia davvero la SUA e di nessun altro.… Expand

It's about a young policeman who falls in love with a museum curator, but he has to marry Marion, a young teacher who makes a mistake that will ruin their lives. Beautiful movie, great actors. Must watch. I was very surprised how emotional some of the scenes got me and how much this movie had me on the edge of my seat.

You gotta feel sorry for Harry Styles being miscast in every film he has been on.
