They now have a semi-surly teenage daughter who's humiliated by her heritage, while their own relationship is losing a bit of focus. True to the title, there's another wedding that brings the family together, after much comic mayhem. All of the fussy relatives are back, including a few new ones and there's plenty of mildly entertaining "Greek comedy." There's nothing subtle or surprising in this sequel and the writing (also by Vardalos) is somewhat bland. Still, audiences who prefer broad, obvious, family-style humor may find it sweetly appealing. Sure, My Big Fat Greek Wedding isn't as good as it's predecessor, but the film is consistently funny, and very enjoyable. The best part about it is that it doesn't overstay it's welcome.

Enjoyable and funny, with the same sense of coming-of-age in an immigrant family as the first one. I loved the added layer of a 50 year couple reconsidering their marriage. A fun night at the movies with enjoyable characters that seem like family.

I was such a fan of the first movie and I so enjoyed all the characters, humor, and fun from the original. When I saw in the USA Today months ago that they were doing a sequel with all the original cast, I was so pumped. Of course I made plans to go see the sequel on its first night in the theater. The AMC theater filling up quick and I was hoping with the rest of the crowd that it would live up to the original. I have to admit the first 1/4 of the movie I found myself thinking, OK just like so many other sequels, this one wasn't going to live up expectations, not even close. Not sure what happened as Nina Vardalos, John Corbett, Michael Constantine, and the rest seemed to be entangled in the first quarter of the script. Then all of a sudden like a magical spell was thrown upon all the cast and instantly it became enchanted with all the grace, humor, wit, and fun of the original. If you go give it a chance to heat up because it does full force, all the one liners start getting laughs, and the wit of Gus and Maria, along with the wise cracks of Aunt Voula come alive. Aunt Voula like in the first along with Gus steal the movie for me and run with it. Like any comedy I went to see, I love to hear the rest of theater enjoy a movie and laugh along the way. The story I won't give it totally away as most of you probably already know unexpectedly Gus and Maria find out that their wedding liscense wasn't signed by the priest 50 years ago, thus all those years in their minds they weren't married properly. When Gus finds the certificate by accident while looking up his Greek heritage, that is where all the fun begins. This wrapped with the other story lines comes together nicely as Ian and Toula's marriage has fallen on boring times, and in addition their daughter now a senior in HS is trying to pick a college to attend and a suitable boyfriend for the prom, without interference from the rest of the family. It all shapes together nicely and ended up being a great movie. I would have given it a 10 if the movie had not started out with the magic that the other 3/4 of the movie brought to us all. I really hated to see it end just like the original, now I can only hope that maybe we might get lucky and see a 3rd installment!!!!!!!!! One can only wish. Expand

When the original came out, I thought it was a syrupy sweet greeting card with a plot that went nowhere. Although the characters were great, all the dramatic tension, of you could call it that, felt manufactured. But I ended up seeing the thing several times because everyone else I knew seemed to love it. When I saw the sequel was coming out Easter weekend, I was genuinely excited to go with my mom and have a fun day together seeing a cheesy movie. But darn it, if someone wasn't chopping onions in that theater. It's so fun to have the cast back 14 years later, as well as the original house and restaurant sets. In the time since the first movie came out, I've gotten married and become a parent, so it was pretty poignant to see the restaurant again and remember the scenes from the first movie where the family was awkwardly getting to know Ian (deftly played by John Corbett) and think about how much life has changed since that scene, both for me and for the Portokalos'. Now, Ian and Toula are parents to a teenaged daughter named Paris, and dealing with very relatable sandwich generation stresses. Yes, it would have been nice for Paris' interests and personality to have been rounded out more. And there is one scene in particular that features some of the clunkiest dialogue since the '80s. The "wedding" part of the premise might be a hard sell for some, and I get that. But I think the performances are strong enough that the over-the-top-ness of the plot isn't too much. At least this time there's a sense of actual questions being asked which may not resolve as expected. And I personally would much rather see this kind of stretch in a romantic comedy than the relatable-nerd-stalks-manic-pixie-dream-girl trope. To sum up, the strength of the movie is that it's a romantic comedy about long term relationships after the shine has worn off and you're trying to keep a sense of yourselves as a couple despite having too many outside obligations. I am not a fan of the romantic comedy genre in general, but years ago I fell in love with the first "My Big Fat Greek Wedding". It was Honest, funny, and organic, and the characters felt like real humans. Fast forward to the sequel. I saw the previews and was very worried. Was this going to be a wilder, shmultzyer re-hash of the first movie devoid of its heart in favor of cheap laughs? After watching it in the theater, let me assure you it is not. The same honesty, humor and heart that made the first movie special is intact, but told in an entirely different story, exploring people who have moved to very different parts of their life, have grown, but remain recognizable. Though it helps to have seen the first movie just to see the organic growth of the characters (and really you should see the first one just because it's great), this one easily stands on its own. The characters are equal parts bombastic and relateable. It emphasizes that tradition is important, but that change is good, and not to be feared. It walks the line between the importance of close family relationships and also having the courage and independence to strike out on your own and take command of your life. In short, there was not a thing about this movie I didn't like. If you liked the first one, this one will melt you, in a good way. If you never saw the first one, you will still find plenty to enjoy here. See it. Expand

Well, I expected this not to end up like a Zoolander 2 and it perfectly did. If you're going to make movie sequels, at least release them in exactly 10 years or less. Now this movie's also worthless to see. Not even the greek weddings can save the major movies being released on March 25th, 2016 from being great. Now you're going to save your money... save your money from these movies coming up. Waste them on movies still playing in theaters or wait until the next pair of upcoming movies. If they're ever going to announce My Big Fat Greek Funeral, at least come in exactly 10 years or less. That's exactly what makes a movie screwed. People wanting sequels... then they don't want a sequel to happen due to low population of the first movie but they did listen before they listened about not having a sequel because it was released 14 years later. People always change. Greeks don't because they expect to be the same even after 14 years and they tried but they did change. Expand

Through years I've watched it dozens of times, if not almost weekly. No wonder I was exited when I heard of making it's sequel. I was thrilled, but also terrified they would spoil it. All I have to say after watching it yesterday is, they didn't. I don't say they couldn't have done it better, they could. Compared to the original movie (which for me is high above most comedies I've saw in my life), the sequel is a little better then average, but compared to other comedies in, let's say, last 10 years, it's FANTASTIC! Nia Vardalos did a great job bringing it back to us, with original cast, scenes, even jokes from the first movie. Comparing to the original movie, maybe it's a little more focused on relationships - behind all the jokes is hidden a beautiful message on family and marriage. I went with my family and we didn't have so much laugh in years. It's hilariously funny and touching and lovable and in a way consoling, because we all have family, which is fabulous but sticks in our business all the time. And that's good, because that means, they love us. The movie brings a deep point to it. I've just read some bad reviews and I can't believe it! Any critics on movie being superficial and judgemental are absurd - this is comedy, for God's sake. All the jokes on Greeks are meant for very positive angle, so I don't see the problem. However, it's a MUST see!!! For people, which haven't seen the 1st one it will be hilarious, and the ones who did, will also not be disappointed. Must GO CHECK IT yourself!!! I can't wait to see it over and over again! :)))* Expand

The idea of togetherness.

This movie isn't perfect, but put together well. From the picture being vibrant, to the energetic and charismatic characters (don't remember all the names of the characters, but the aunty is hilarious). It's funny, snappy, and corny to the point of embarrassment, but without revealing this fact to my girlfriend, I did quite enjoy the trip, and I don't usually like these types of movies.

Think I need to go for therapy.

Another fat wedding in one big Greek family.

A sequel after the 14 years, actually it was not bad. It followed a simple story of another fat wedding in the Toula's big family. Great to see them all once again, and I hope the third film as well will be made very sooner than another 14 years. This franchise has a wonderful set of the characters and each one was in a very unique that imprinted its trademark and so the film gave them all equal parts to explore the opportunity.

Yep, it's not anymore about Toula, particularly not in this part or if you're expecting it to be about her daughter, you will be disappointed, but it was a well distributed contents to all the characters and extracted as much as possible good comedies. Beside it was written by Toula (Nia Vardalos) like the previous film.

Most of the stuff was as expected, like the slapstick humours. Not everybody would going love it, but if you had liked the first then definitely you would enjoy it as well. Even the first film was not a masterpiece and so this one yet undeniably a good entertainer. Nowadays, in this kind of theme you won't get a fresh storyline, but this one was very original. From the director by 'Everybody's Fine' fame, who really did a good job. A decent summer film, but a very enjoyable film with the family.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 should not have a (Red 37) nor should it have a cumulative User Score of 5.9. It is a much better experience - in every way - than those scores would lead one to believe. Just as with the first film (and to a lesser extent the 7-episode TV series) Nia has filled her film with heart and humor (I laughed aloud consistently throughout MBFGW2) and she delivers some very effective one-liners as well as a lot of visual humor - especially concerning the (now) great-grandmother. Funny is funny and it can't be faked and MBFGW2 is solidly funny. That I am Nia's age (I am actually 8 months younger) does not matter really but she does deliver a remarkably effective take on the (simple) passage of time and the toll it takes (yes, it is a comedy) on all of us. And that is the added layer of pathos that is a welcome gift in MBFGW2. I knew something was amiss when at six weeks now the sequel is still playing. (Red 37) closes in a week or two but at six weeks the people have spoken and word of mouth takes over and keeps a film running. I have to believe (as I do believe) that anyone who takes the time to see MBFGW2 will see that there is so much there to be enjoyed - much more than i expected from the metacritic scores - and the clever and sometimes heart-tugging parallels to the original film make this sequel one of the best that I have ever seen. I loved this film and I very nearly sat through it a second time yesterday...just staying in my seat...in the end I didn't, but i was tempted, oh yes, tempted and when was the last time that happened? It has been a very long time indeed! Thank you Nia and thanks to Rita and Tom as well. Expand
