While it has good intentions, "My All American" comes off as way too melodramatic and incredibly clichéd. Some of the heart does work, and it is a story worth telling, but it is not executed very well.

Great adaption and screenplay with good performances from the actors involved. Showed the grit and substance that Freddie displayed as a player, but most of all as a person, setting examples for all who was involved. I had never heard of him till I saw the movie. It inspired me so much that I wanted to read more about him. Again a great movie and experience for me and would highly recommend the movie to others. Expand

It spends a lot of time telling you how nice he his, how smart he his, how reverent he is, how all the ladies like him, how good he his at football, and how determined he is to do what he believes is right. Individually, none of these are inherently bad traits to give to the average role model protagonist. But putting them all together into a single character makes Freddie unrelatable, uninspiring, and uninteresting. So much of this movie is about telling the viewer how good he his at football that there is very little conflict for the majority of the movie. By the time the protagonist was accepted into the university of Texas, I was actually rooting against the hero in the following football games. At least if he did lose, then there would be at least some possibility of a conflict to drive the plot.

It's roughly the last fifth of the movie where Freddie is given any challenge and the movie finally shows some redeemable qualities. However, by this point it was too late to hold up the entire film. If the movie spent much more time focusing on this struggle rather than constantly showing off Freddie outperforming his teammates, it might have been something worth recommending. But the execution is ultimately a below-average and forgettable sports drama.

I thought it nicely showed a character with true grit and strength and showed good performances. I found it refreshing that it payed homage to someone who worked hard plus provided a great example and role model which is especially needed nowadays. It's something the whole family can enjoy and has a great ending. Awesome story! Expand
