Which in 2035 will apparently look like a garish and surprisingly dull version Blade Runner. It's pretty amazing that such a good looking and crowded movie can feel so devoid of life. A lot of work went into the visuals, but it doesn't feel like any was put into giving the film a soul. There's a missing layer of depth to go underneath the shiny exterior to imbue Mute with any sort of meaning or purpose.

Not all of our time is spent with the silent protagonist. Director and writer Duncan Jones dedicates a lot of his passion project to the side-characters "Cactus Bill" (Paul Rudd) and "Duck" (Justin Theroux). An AWOL soldier and pedophile respectively. While both sides of the story eventually tie into each other (without any feeling of payoff), it's still hard to tell why they needed to be included in the first place. All they do is have inane conversations about things that are never explained to the audience in a satisfactory manner and only serve to make the limp events of the film movie by at an even more plodding pace. Not even the occasional splashes of sex and violence do much to add any energy to the film.

To top things off Mute is tonally inconsistent. This future noir tries to go for dark and brooding, but is often undermined by Jones' quirky sense of humor that's quite frankly never as funny as it wants to be. You get a sense that the movie is trying to say something. What that is remains a mystery. It's such an odd amalgam of pieces that whatever message Jones intended to deliver got lost long before the final product was released. Even with the easy to follow plot, things are shockingly incoherent in this bit of sci-fi drudgery.

Mute's saving grace is Paul Rudd, whose frequent outburst are sometimes amusing. Unfortunately his performance is held prisoner in this boring and overall pointless feeling movie. Perhaps one could get a grasp of whatever Jones was trying to get across to viewers after watching it another time or two. Maybe even picking up on the hidden genius of the film and allowing it to attain cult status. I personally doubt it and don't see anyone even trying to after suffering through it a first time (if they even got that far). I suppose there is one thing Mute gets right. The essential nature of noir is that there are no heroes. With the credits being about the only thing to route for here, the movie does manage to capture that quality. Just for the wrong reasons.

They gave the last jedi a 9/10 but gave Netflix movies like Mute and The Outsider 3/10 ratings, it's just insane. I'm to the point where I don't even listen to them anymore, I mean, who cares what they think? The internet and streaming media are killing them and Hollywood. The movie is a character piece about very different but fascinatingly flawed characters. I appreciated the unpredictability of where the film was going, which is too often foreshadowed so obviously that many movies lack any suspense. Pacing may have been uneven, but only is an issue if you are expecting an action/thriller rather than detailed emersions into the seemingly unconnected lives of people with an eventual crossroads in the climax. This will become part of those cult movies that, when looked through the time perspective, become a must see and part of every movie lover catalog. Critics expect all movies to be classics, tend to criticize what they do not understand, and were very harsh against Mute. But their views are not always coincidental of the general public, so their opinions should not determine the quality of any film. It is their own view of what they wish they could have achieved but didn’t. Expand

It's sad to realize that one of the films I expected the most this year ended up being so disappointing.

The story and the narrative are a mess, the rhythm is very uneven, the characters do not connect, especially because of the empty plot, the mystery is very poor and frankly the film takes a long time to start, it feels stagnant and both the conflict and the resolution were quite underwhelming.

Of all the cast only Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux seem truly involved in the characters while the protagonist Alexander Skarsgård delivers one of the most soulless performances of his career.

This is a movie that looks good but that never saves a film, the stories count a lot and Mute's is too disorganized.
This film failed because of its own ambition.

If you're still on Netflix check Altered Carbon instead.

I know it's been rough for Duncan Jones in the last couple of years with his wife (Rodene Ronquillo) diagnosed with cancer and the passing of his father (David Bowie), and now this. It's incredibly sad that Duncan passion project couldn't live up to his vision. The ideas were there, but nothing panned out. I still look forward for what he makes in the future and hoping things work out for him.

Dear Netflix,

Please stop helping butcher the sci-fi genre. Altered Carbon was meh but with these last two, The Cloverfield Paradox and now Mute, are just complete sh*t. I understand that most sci-fi films released this day aren't particularly good but at-least there semi-watchable, not completely pointless, and don't put me to sleep. I think you may have gotten caught in the idea of what you can do as opposed to what you should do and while crapfests such as Mute may be cheap to buy and distribute, they're cheap for a reason and chances are you could likely get them for free just so the original production company can wash there hands of the mess. Set in Berlin 40 years from now, the creatively named 'Mute' follows a mute Amish bartender who is searching for his missing girlfriend. What ensures is a bunch of loosely tied plot threads, another Blade Runner themed world (which i'll address soon), and a bunch of boring and misplaced performances that all accumulate to yet another bad excuse at neo-noir film-making. Duncan Jones, the writer and director of this film once again continues his downward spiral in film-making following the abomination Warcraft. While the only good film he made was Moon (which this film will be sure to remind you of) Jones shows, that he still hasn't found his way back to writing a good film and will now have to spend the next few years reminding people at parties that he wrote and directed Moon, before he is given another gig. Jones direction overall is a mess and nothing really connects nor makes sense in the greater scheme of things, character motivations seem off and when the film finds itself at an impasse an element of deus ex machina is thrown in to get the protagonist onto the next set so things can get wrapped up.

Before i continue i would like to segue onto the topic of Blade Runner because it seems like every neo-noir project ever made needs to ceremoniously kiss it's ass and structure it's entire world around 2019 Los Angles. Now don't get me wrong, Blade Runner is among my top 10 favorite films ever made, but for god's sake be original, because if hear visually inspired by Blade Runner mentioned one more time, i think i'm going to scream.

Now that that's over, acting. Now acting in this film as i said before is boring, Alexander Skarsgård is the lead and he is difficult watch, not only is his presence in the film just akward to watch, the fact that his character doesn't talk also makes him all the more dis-interesting as his spends the majority of the movie drawing pictures and punching people. Paul Rudd makes the best of his time between his marvel acting gigs in yet another type-cast role in which he plays the sarcastic every-man. And newcomer Seyneb Saleh plays the love interest, a paint by numbers femme fatale with a dark secret and past, that is only slightly more interesting to watch then the lead as she actually speaks.

Mute is a boring and uninspired Blade Runner rip off with a few quirks throw in for good measure. You probably won't remember this film after you watch it, I sure don't and if the movies title wasn't 4 letters i probably would have forgotten that already too.

I don't understand how people can give this movie 3's and 4's, and yet give movies like Bright a 7... but i guess that's how opinions work. So here's my take on Mute!

I really like it. We get Cyberpunk, we get a good bad guy played by Paul Rudd, and we get a very Pure guy who is driven by selfless reasons. He can't talk because of an accident in his childhood, so he draws nice sketches which say more than words. He goes to seek his girlfriend who is missing, and he meets people from the strange Cyberpunk underworld.

But who really steels the show is Paul Rudd, who is very good at being a dark person in this movie. The movie is gruesome, and it kept me entertained till the end. It is an excellent movie, i give it an 8/10.

It makes the same mistake many other bad movies do. It sets its story in a sci-fi or fantasy world and completely wastes it a generic crime thriller plot that doesn't let the world be of any use.

It's also way too long. The longer it went the less I liked it, which is a shame because it actually started pretty strong.

It has a few really good and eye-catching moments, plus I like the idea of showing difficulties of a mute man in the world of future, but it was overall boring and story feels ragged.
