I agree with the fact that films like this one should continue to be produced considering that the younger generations believes that WWII, the Nazis and the Holocaust were an exaggeration. But with efforts as timid and timorous as this one, it's problematic.

Munich: The Edge of War is a prelude to WWII, but it's one that feels like a kind of slapstick history, rather than the thriller it's supposed to be.

In its context it's alright, but in the overall it is absolutely forgettable.

One of his former OxfordGeorge MacKay plays a young British diplomat who works for Prime Minister Chamberlain in 30s England. He's enlisted to travel with him to Munich, where they'll be meeting with Hitler and other world leaders. One of his former Oxford classmates (Jannis Niewöhner) works for the German government, so they plan a covert meeting in an attempt to avert World War II. The performances are compelling and it's sufficiently crafted, but the expected danger and subsequent anxiety never materializes. While the historical conference is based on fact, this fictionalized angle turns out to be more about the relationships than a tense spy thriller. Expand

A somewhat lackluster, understated, and speculative attempt to redeem Neville Chamberlain. The characters are stereotypical. The characters are stereotypical. The Brits are so over-the-top staid and uptight that even their moments of deep emotion come across as superficial. In this film, it's the Nazis that have all the passion, even as they play the stereotypical bad guys. I'll give a nod to Jeremy Irons for his Neville Chamberlain and even Ulrich Matthes for his short despot with the moustache. Every other part could have been done by an android. Expand

Although don’t know too much about the original story and characters and understand why some people may have concerns with the Neville dude, have to say those bashing it cause it may treat him sympathetically aren’t watching it as a movie butAlthough don’t know too much about the original story and characters and understand why some people may have concerns with the Neville dude, have to say those bashing it cause it may treat him sympathetically aren’t watching it as a movie but rather with pre biased opinions . Although yes Jeremy irons may not be as good as movie might make him the intriguing characters and story behind it still makes for a very watchable and important subject. Let’s just history doesn’t repeat itself although I fear it is if we don’t stop what now is tuning into a c communist and very eerie to history government… Expand

Two years ago George MacKay had already been the protagonist of "1917" and I find it interesting to compare the two films, the one on the 1st World War and this on the preparations for the 2nd. If Mendes focused on virtuosity and war horrors, Schwochow has preferred a more conventional and intense historical drama. We know what will happen after the Munich Agreement, but not so much about what happened before. Within a few years the Oxford friends were catapulted into the devastation of their projects, dreams, expectations, hopes for the future, and pointing out the fleetingness of youthful illusions provides a depth that transcends the contingency of the event in itself.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Yeah it’s a hunk of crap, probably influenced by Germans lol, you want me to believe in 1935 there were woke people in Germany who disagreed with hitlers ideal? The only people who did were living in neighbouring countries. But it was great to see our fella from inglorious bastard have another attempt at acting. Expand
