I give the film a five because -- who knows? -- maybe I'm just too dense to grasp the hidden meanings. I watched about half an hour and thought the characters less than believable and frankly just a bit silly. And when I start rolling my eyes I'm done.

I mean, Goodfellas was believable. LA Confidential was believable. Mulholland Dr., to my peasant sensibilities, seems like schlock.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My first movie review on metacritc and I've decided to do a movie which didn't impress me at all. Watching movies like Primer, Momento, Triangle, and Pulp Fiction I was recommended by a friend to watch this movie. So I did watch it, and I had high expectations for it because everyone was praising this movie as a masterpiece so my standard for this movie was 9/10.

So after watching this movie (with an open mind and watching all the details.) I thought to myself. "what the hell did I just watch?" The movie was so weird after the 1 hour and 55 minute mark that it was confusing but in a terrible way. Scenes didn't make sense, transitions were awful and abrupt that I couldn't tell what if it was a "flashback" or if it was real life. The movie asked more questions then rather just answered them. If David Lynch could have executed these scenes a lot better instead of adding nonsense scenes in the first part of the film this movie could have been a lot better. And it seems that David Lynch has never had a dream before because half the time Rita was focused in the first 80% of the film. And since it's Diane's dream... wouldn't the dream be in Diane/Betty's prospective because it's her dream and not Rita's?

The problem with this movie is that it couldn't make it's point clear like the other movies I have watched, (momento, triangle, primer all had moral elements that were clear to the audience.) This movie relied on too many symbols and elements that can only be caught in a 3rd time viewing this movie. But Naomi's Acting was amazing and I found the "dream's plot" somewhat interesting but after Rita looked in the Blue Box... all hell went loose and that's why this movie deserves a 5/10. I would recommend if you are a David Lynch fan but if you are looking for a causal mind twisting movie.. then skip it.

If having to listen to someone tell you about a dream they had is the cliche that represents all boring conversations, I'm not sure why this movie receives acclaim. There certainly is some artistry involved in provoking an emotional responseIf having to listen to someone tell you about a dream they had is the cliche that represents all boring conversations, I'm not sure why this movie receives acclaim. There certainly is some artistry involved in provoking an emotional response in his audience, and it does feel like being trapped in a dream, but as a loose sequence of non-linear mood-scapes, it feels like you're watching the film equivalent of lazy abstract paintings that you're sure were painted by a cat. I found that it angered and bored me simultaneously. And dreams aren't supposed to go on that long. Expand

This is one of those movies that put the enlightened critics against the regular people, i couldnt stand it. You can accuse me of ignorant of whatever, ill say that some of my favourite movies are for example aronofsky s requiem & the fountain, even when they are crazy and they repeat scenes they got sense, a story and they are not showing images and saying "if you dont understand this you are ignorant".

Una peli aburrida. De esas que enfrentan a los críticos con la gente. Me pareció insoportable.

MD is an at times fascinating piece of filmwork like a visual poem with some high quality stylistic choices resulting (when at its best) in evocative moments with some of these provocative highs and lows providing a dream like quality. In almost the same moment this can quickly becomes cheap provocation for its own sake falling into a lo fi style of experimental wankiness. Overall i felt like there could've been something much better than what we got if the project focused under a lense that wasnt so abstract. For a film shot in the late 90's it has aged terribly. Overall it is clear this was an artist's mad dream laid bare to experience so if thats your jam - you will LOVE this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. David Lynch is a curious example of how you can fool a great bunch of people into thinking that you are a great film director. Mulholland Drive is the best testament to that. As a true sociopath, Lynch knows what he likes, the same way he knows what other people like, especially men. Women. So he simply takes a stereotypically-looking cute blonde and stereotypically-looking brunette because he wants to see them naked on camera. A private lesbian scene for himself, and a public one for everyone else.

Second thing Lynch likes is riddles, and he knows many men and women like the same. So he makes a movie packed with puzzles to entertain intellectuals and confuse, even bewitch those who are guided mostly by emotions. Yes, he calls himself a surrealist but — I mean — who wants to admit to being a trickster?

Third thing Lynch likes is being invincible. He takes a very convenient form, created not by himself but by other men like Andrei Tarkovsky and Ingmar Bergman, and uses it to justify everything he does. If you say that everything you show is a dream, no one can challenge it's authenticity or plausibility — dreams are inherently irrational.

Fourth, and one if the most important things Lynch likes is talking about the things he knows, and avoiding everything he doesn't know. Let's see what a sociopathic man can possibly know... How to manipulative people into liking him? Yes. How to make a woman do what he wants? Yes. How to make someone laugh by imitating humour? Yes. How to make everyone believe that nonsense actually makes sense? Yes. How to show a men's world full of sensual women, powerful men and gangsters? Yes, that he knows for sure. Sadly, Lynch knows a lot about intellect and very little about emotions. He can't even show anything believable besides narcissistic directors and histerical women. He knows extremes, not nuances. But, that's David Lynch's dream, and whatever you and I have to say about it, he is the only one who has authority over it. A dream where white bisexual women exist only to satisfy the desires of white heterosexual men.

Do you still want to be a part of this dream?

I don't... I don't believe in the genius of Lynch. All I see is an ingenious sociopath who tries to manipulate me into thinking he's a genius.

Mulholland Drive is a simple suspense story which is shown in different way. Director used a few cheap thrill tricks to make the story confusing and the tricks worked.

I am still trying to figure the climax and will probably have to see it
Mulholland Drive is a simple suspense story which is shown in different way. Director used a few cheap thrill tricks to make the story confusing and the tricks worked.

I am still trying to figure the climax and will probably have to see it again to catch things I missed and which may help me understand it better. It is a very detailed plot that very slowly comes together. Editing work was great, jumping back and forth between scenes was done properly. Combined with smart use of music and sounds, it all helps to build suspense in our minds.

This movie demands alot of patience as you are seeing 2hr 30min dead serious drama. This is where main problem lies. Movie is so slow paced with dead serious plot and you might start getting frustrated and may loose patience.

Overall, it is movie which everyone might not love watching. Some will love it, some will hate it. This movie demands audience which love dead serious crap.
