Amazing movie!!!
Beautiful story
Beautiful scenery. Vibrant colors. Worthy characters tugging at our heartstrings. The Chinese speaks English surprisingly well. Liu Yifei is 33, but still looks like a pretty teen. She did well, but isn'tAmazing movie!!!

She did well, but isn't really suitable for the role as she's too dainty, soft-spoken and unable to reach the lofty heights of a true pugilist.
Love her spinning spear kick though!
Great CGI.
Powers and skills are too fantasy-like for movie to have a realistic feel. LOL
A pity I watched this great movie on my tiny budget 27 inch monitor. ;p… Expand

Come on you guys... I do prefer the darker more badass versions of these movies, but this was really fun, good for the whole family, and I gotta try and bring the user score up for this. An ill-conceived narrative mess that does not compare well to the 1998 animated Mulan. An insult to Chinese identity because someone decided to make Chinese actors deliver lines in English (to pander to western audience).

In an animation, it is fine to have Chinese characters speak English, because it is a story that does not seek to be "real", like a fairy tale. The audience will not be that bothered. The 1998 animated Mulan is an empowering "fairy tale" story with Chinese elements inspired by a folklore ballad.

When Disney decided to do a live action remake with production design that seems to be aiming for authenticity, the game changes. It is just wrong to force Chinese Actors that can speak Mandarin, to deliver lines (emotion) in English. Language is integral to one's way of thinking, one's personal identity, one's cultural heritage and social image. Forcing Chinese actors to speak English, like they don't have their own perfectly fine full-functioning language that is just as full of nuance and complex communication, is the Ultimate Disrespect to Chinese culture.

If they wanted 'authenticity' and to pander to Chinese audience, they should have done this live action remake in Mandarin, and dubbed into English (or subtitled) for western audience, and spent some money hiring Chinese scriptwriter, production staff, who will know the culture intrinsically. The acting would be better if the actors were allowed to use their native language. And from an authenticity viewpoint, it is odd to have a 'realistic' historical folklore Chinese drama in spoken English.

From the pander-to-the-western-audience viewpoint, they would have done better to do a shot-by-shot live remake, with all the music and beloved characters of the animated classic.… Expand

At first I didn't knew why the viewer ratings were so low, so I was curious to see this movie for myself. Then I discovered that most user ratings were politically motivated, and nothing but anti-china bots, with nonsensical reasons to makeAt first I didn't knew why the viewer ratings were so low, so I was curious to see this movie for myself. Then I discovered that most user ratings were politically motivated, and nothing but anti-china bots, with nonsensical reasons to make this movie look bad. In that regard they failed their purpose, because its free publicity and it made me actually wanting to see the movie even more.

After watching the movie myself, I can truly say it was beautifully made! The movie had good build up, majestically filmed. Yifei as Mulan was charismatic and her charms added depth to the character Mulan. She sometimes speaks volumes without saying anything, and when she does say something its meaningful, those are rare qualities of an actor.

At times it gave me goosebumps to finally see a live action version of Mulan, I have to admit I had to wipe some occasional tears away throughout the movie.

Mulans companions were funny and their camaraderie was heartfelt.

Fun fact: Honghui was historically the love interest of Mulan, not Shang Li from the animated movie ;-)

Even though without the musical songs that made the animated version popular, but there were enough references to the animation throughout the movie that made it satisfying watch and did honor to the animated version.

All the actors were great and solid, especially the father played by Tzi Ma was convincing as a caring and inspirational father to Mulan in such a short timespan of character development.

Sad fact: Historically Mulan fought a war campaign of 12 years. She never did get to see her father again, because when she got home her father already died of old age. Traumatized by warfare, Mulan never became her old self, she got depressed and committed suicide, hoping she could reunite with her father in the afterlife being that carefree loving daughter again....

The encounter with the Witch (Xianniang) played by Gong Li was superbly done. I think the witch might even have been a metaphor for Mulans inner fears. It was so poetically well executed.

I am glad Jetli got to do some of his last few action sequences, as Jetli is suffering from returning illnesses, the reason why he doesn't do much action nowadays.

Bori Khans character is the equivalent of Shan Yu in the animated version, and is in the live action more fleshed out as to what his motivations were for attacking the kingdom, that was a nice touch.

Also nice references to chinese Wuxia genre, where lifeforce and chi are prominent for martial art masters.

For the people that missed Mushu, there is a reference of a phoenix though that helped Mulan, and in chinese folklore phoenix represents a woman.

I recommend this movie highly for the fans of the original animation and for people who are new to the story of Mulan.

For me it was A well worthy tribute to both the legendary chinese folklore story Mulan aswell as the original disney animated version!… Expand

the graphics are made at a high enough level, the acting has a good color, each character is sufficiently disclosed and has its own story, of course, there are some drawbacks, but there is not a single film that would be without drawbacks.
In the end, I want to say that this film will grow in the eyes of people who like to think, and not just watch; also, this film will give an impetus to many to develop and achieve their goals, despite the opinion of society.… Expand

I loved the very stylized cinematography and the bold visuals. I loved the variation of the story and the foil that Mulan found in the character of Xianniang. Those who loved the original (as I did) will find there are many small homages to it throughout, expertly woven in with the story in an organic way. If you are able to embrace this film for what it is instead of what you think you want it to be (especially those of you wanting Eddie Murphy in a dragon suit) it is beautiful and moving.… Expand

This Mulan 2020, shows great empowerment for women which many needs, love for family, and self confrontations and reflections. LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT!! I loved the updated storyline, the all Asian cast, the kinship amongst the female antagonist and female protagonist. I watched it with my boys and they enjoyed it as well. This movie is an absolute IMPROVEMENT over the original nightmare of a "film" in every way possible. It removes some horrific dumpster fires of characters like sHAnG and MuShU and the godawful CrICkET. But aside from that, it replaces them with meaningful, well written new characters like the Phoniex Witch that can turn into a bunch of birds. It also introduces a Chi, an awesome sword that is very useful and welcoming in battle, and it makes Mulan into an actual CHARACTER rather than a lazy stupidly clumsy PRINCESS like the original film's version of her that's helplessly waiting for her prince. Please pay the price to view this amazing film! It should be taught in film school, let's be real and very honest.… Expand

In my opinion this Live Action is one of the best Disney has made. It's different, yet familiar. It's for kids, but also for adults. It has action, it has spectacular visuals, awesome music and a good message.

I particularly don't mind the fact it is different, in my opinion, live-action remakes should be different to thenoriginals. If I want to see the original, I will. I like surprises on the new versions, and new takes on stuff. I loved the original classic Mulan, and I did not expect this one to be a copy of it. I myself thought that Lion King could've been at least a little bit different for example.
I definitely recommend this movie, I believe it is a good family friendly movie with good effects, good music and beautiful visuals.
In the end, however, you'll have to judge for yourself (after watching it, and not like most people in here nowadays, that bash stuff without even playing/watching them....)… Expand

Las malas críticas son sólo un pobre Review Bombing porque hasta el momento no he visto ningún argumento que realmente justifique una mala crítica radical porque en sí Mulan no es un Live Action perfecto, es mas, tiene poco o casi nada de la versión original animada de 1998, la cual es todo un clasico; el problema es que nunca van a estar conformes, si hubiese sido fiel al producto original se estarían quejando de que es más de lo mismo o que no tienen nuevas ideas que ofrecer y si realizan cambios en la trama dirán que no es fiel al original y que por eso es una basura. En lo personal me gustó mucho, la puesta en escena es magnífica, amé a Mulan en esta nueva versión, escenas de acción muy interesantes y dinámicas, quizás las actuaciones en general no son muy buenas y eso implica que la dirección tampoco fue prolífica, sin embargo, vale la pena, más aún en estos tiempos donde escasean buenas películas.… Expand

This is not the animated movie, and it doesn't have to be. This movie goes its own direction, harkening back somewhat to the original legend of Mulan and building from there. The movie was good. If I could give half points it would be a 7.5. They said beforehand that there wasn't going to be Mushu or singing, so I wasn't expecting any. First, the photography and all the visual language that accompanies you from beginning to end, are a true delight for the eyes ... A majestic fresco, with a color treatment that highlights each & every shot. Yes, the photography is really striking and can't leave you insensible. Also, the music inhabitates every chapter with an immense grace, and accompanies this emotional journey alongside Mulan in the most grandiose way !

The screenplay keeps the same main beats as the original animated version, but upgrades the storyline as a whole, with more subtlety and depth ... Yifei Liu has a magnetic presence and transmits us a lot of emotions through her so expressive eyes ...

Of course, the choregraphies and the staging also have a very finely artistic language, which flows like a smooth dance, throughout the movie ... Obviously there are some striking scenes and images that nicely punctuate the adventure and participate to make it evolve into an ever more epic & emotional way.

Mulan's interactions with each character, are a big strenght of the movie, they all are a step and a deciding element in her evolution as a woman & hero, from the very first scene up until the very last scene.

I know it has brought up controversy, but try to move past that, watch it as a stand alone movie with some reference to the original. Most people giving it a 0 haven't even watched it. Is this perfect? No. But, what film is? None. Mulan is absolutely a wonderful piece of cinema. It felt like its own film while also having feelings very similar to the original. Having been excited about this movie for a long time, I waitedIs this perfect? No. But, what film is? None. Mulan is absolutely a wonderful piece of cinema. It felt like its own film while also having feelings very similar to the original. Having been excited about this movie for a long time, I waited all the way to midnight just to watch it release on Disney+. I then proceeded to immediately love it. The acting is fantastic, the visuals are astounding, the action sequences are so cool to watch and the overall story is still incredibly moving. It stands well on its own to the point where the lack of Mushu and the songs (though some songs do appear in the score of the film in several scenes) isn't really noticed. While I do have a lot of love and respect for the original, this new Mulan stands on its own and I love it maybe even as much as its animated predecessor. It was very much worth the money spent and way better than these reviews give it credit for. What a wonderful film. Thank you Disney for sharing this new adaptation of Mulan with the world, I am very grateful.… Expand

In Mulan, I see a love letter to China from the West. Not only does the movie cross cultural divides, but racial and political ones as well. Meanwhile, two hashtags are trending, #BoycottMulan and #MilkTeaAlliance, attributed to Liu YiFei'sIn Mulan, I see a love letter to China from the West. Not only does the movie cross cultural divides, but racial and political ones as well. Meanwhile, two hashtags are trending, #BoycottMulan and #MilkTeaAlliance, attributed to Liu YiFei's support for the Hong Kong police, and China's encroachment upon its smaller neighbors. In effect, support for this movie is tantamount to support for the CCP and its policies.

I then took time to consider the virtues highlighted in the movie. "Loyalty to country" is one shared between the US and China. Additionally, each country is experiencing its share of demonstrations, not to mention detention camps. Loyalty to country may take the form of protest, with the aims of helping the country take steps towards a more just society. In Mulan, I see a figure who takes stock of the situation then breaks the rules in order to serve the greater good, not a staunch nationalist who toes the party line.

Another virtue highlighted is "truth." This is the Trojan horse that can be directed at either system of government. The truth is that both countries are ruled by wealthy elites, even as both aspire to be republics. Without acknowledging the corruption of both systems, the ideals of neither state will be fully realized, a truth similar to the one arrived by Mulan on her own journey.

In short, boycott Huawei, not diplomatic tentpoles like Mulan. Even if it is a "Panda Express" interpretation of the revered folk hero, it is an improved approximation. As symbolic gestures go, this offers hope for improved relations between the countries. There is more to be found in common within our cultures, virtues, not to mention shortcomings, esp. with globalization intertwining us closer each day.… Expand

It was an okay film I guess. Really not kuch to say about it, probably as balnd as one can get and considering the controversy around it and the hegty $30 price tag I would urge one to skip this film.

Yes, it's not exactly as the animated film, I would've preferred a dragon than a Phoenix but I love the artistry and visuals of this film! Truth be told, it's a good Chinese movie. It doesn't follow the Hollywood convention of storytelling so it's not well adapted to us, so we need to be open-minded to another style to appreciate it. (of course we don't have to and can just hate it)
Is it perfect? Well, which movie is?
If you go see this movie, thinking that Walt Disney's version of Mulan is the source of truth, you're bound to be disappointed, because it's closer to the original legend.
All that being said, it's indeed censored, because to my understanding the legend is much more bloody and would be ill-advised for children... which are a great part of the target audience I believe.… Expand

I never watch Mulan the animated version. And I don't know much about the historical events. That said the story is pretty good. Maybe the moralizing tone of it in the end, is a bit much. The actors are amazing and they are solid in their roles. Their was a nice sobriety about it. The music was catchy. Some things are very Disney like: no blood, no display of injuries, not much expositions to the world of men. All this for the ratings. For young people that might pass, for adults, it's a hard swallow. I give it 70% because of the acting and good actions. This isn't worth 30-40$, really nothing about movie does. Wait for it in Cinema or when the price makes more sens. But I do recommend to go see it, it's not a bad movie.… Expand

Mulan is the latest Disney live-action remake of their 1998 movie of the same name. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic which forced theatres to shut down, The Walt Disney Company have decided to release Mulan via Disney+ for a premium fee while other countries will have theatrical release where the local theatres have been slowly reopened.

Set in Imperial China, Hua Mulan (Yifei) is an adventurous and active girl much to her parents’ disappointment who had hope to find her a good husband. Somewhere in the Imperial outpost to the north, Rouran warriors led by Bori Khan (Lee) attack the outpost with the help of a powerful and shapeshifter witch named Xian Niang (played by Gong Li).

Because of the attack, the Emperor of China (played by Jet Li) decree that every family in the country must contribute one man to fight against the invaders. Unfortunately for the Hua family, Mulan does not have any brothers which means her father, who is a former soldier in the Imperial Army, must contribute himself to fight in the war. Due to her father’s ailing health and may not survive the war, Mulan decide to take her father’s place as soldier and sneak out of her home at night along with her father’s sword and armour.

Disguising herself as a man and called herself Hua Jun, she joins the Imperial Army under the command of Commander Tung (Yen) where she trains with the other conscripts to prepare for the upcoming war without exposing herself as a woman.

Unlike last year’s Aladdin and The Lion King live-action remakes, Mulan is not a full adaptation of its animated movie as there are some changes in this movie. Despite the changes, the basic plot of the movie still remains the same as its original counterpart and easy to follow. While Mushu does not appear in this movie and no singing songs moments, it really does make sense for not to be in this movie is because it would have been unrealistic given the direction of this movie.

For the performance of the cast, everyone has done a great job especially Liu Yifei and Donnie Yen. However, some of the characters didn’t really have much character development which made them easily forgettable later on. As for Gong Li’s character, I felt her character wasn’t really developed well and her character’s purpose was only to serve as the evil counterpart to Mulan.

While this movie cannot be compared to 2009’s Mulan: Rise of a Warrior, which is a Chinese production and with more realistic and darker tone, this movie is still watchable on its own and it is meant for family and children. Same goes to the original animated movie. Whichever one is better is up for a debate. If you have seen the original animated movie and the 2009 movie, give this movie a shot.… Expand

Comme nous le savons, la plupart des classiques Disney sont des adaptations d'histoires ou de légendes qui SONT MODIFIÉS POUR LES ENFANTS. Dans le live-action, il a été un peu plus basé sur la LÉGENDE ORIGINALE (qui est vraiment un poème chinois), donc il n'inclut pas l'interprétation des chansons chantées par les acteurs, ni Mushu, ni rien de comédie. L ' erreur de Disney était de l'appeler ′′ LIVE ACTION ′′ parce que bon c'est vraiment une nouvelle adaptation de Mulan. Mais dès le début Disney nous prévient que les chansons et certains personnages ne viendraient pas dans le film...

Je pense qu'il n'est pas juste que l'on parle mal du film juste pour ne pas inclure les chansons et Mushu , (évidemment Mushu et les chansons manquent, mais regardez le bon côté, Disney a maintenant deux versions de Mulan, regardez simplement celle que vous aimez le plus) Il est juste de lui donner une chance et si vous n'aimez pas, bien, il y aura toujours la version animée.
