I went in with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised by the family friendly movie. Carrey has a good time with the role and adds some solid laugh time to the movie. The Penguins are a hoot and wonderfully rendered, although they are sometimes unnecessarily spastic in the background. Some characters could have been much better developed (or left out) but move still accomplishes its goal of entertaining folks. Expand

I went to two other movies over the weekend and they were rated by the critics much higher than this one. But this one was the movie that I walked out of with a smile on my face. This movie gave me my money's worth and entertined me. This is a feel good movie. It wasn't so full of sci-fi nonsense and mega action that it was boring, like so many movies these days. I think it was Jim Cary's best movie. Expand

I got a few clever quips from Carrey but, for the most part, the writers took the easy way out and filled the movie with the lowest form of humor. Hell, even the farting sound effects seemed cartoonish and out of place. It's probably my fault expecting a comedy classic out of something titled "Mr. Popper's Penguins" but even the story itself was disappointing. The writers brought up so many plot elements that were never mentioned again. Also, the child actors were terrible and the adults just looked like they were trying to make a quick buck. Which, judging by the product, is exactly what they were doing. Expand

One day, after his father dies, he receives a crate which contains all six penguins who then turns his life upside-down. Learning that he has to love them, he does whatever he can to take care of them at any costs.

To those who read the book, I've read the book as well, but this movie is loosely based on the book and I've got my opinion to prove it.

The only problem that I had with this movie was the storyline's pacing. It was so rushed while everything else in this movie turned out great. The casting was brilliant and even Jim Carrey, Angelina Lansbury and Jeffrey Tambor did great at their performances. The jokes were very funny I laughed at every single one of them. The development was organized and well built together. That's all I gotta say.

Mr. Popper's Penguin's lacks in any depth, but it is a great comedy film and little kids and their parents should watch this so they could laugh their butts off for a few minutes.

Inoffensive family comedy starring Jim Carrey, Angela Lansbury, and a half dozen really, REALLY cute little penguins. If that isn't enough to scare you off, you may have just stumbled into the right theatre.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Comedy is drama in disguise. It's no wonder that the penguins stand in rapt attention at the sight of Charlie Chaplin's "The Gold Rush" playing on the television. The flightless birds sense a kindred spirit with the mustached man sporting a bowler hat and cane. Like "The Tramp", the penguins want to go home. About his craft, Chaplin once said, "Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy in long shot." "Mr. Popper's Penguins" knows this. When the penguins escape from their master's apartment, the silent comic's theory proves to be ever so true, as the filmmaker gives us crowd-pleasing shots of the Antarctica natives out in the city, looking adorable and full of high spirits, although the truth of the matter reflects the dichotomy embedded in Chaplin's words. These penguins, unused to the city sounds and innumerable amount of passing New Yorkers(in cars, or on foot), are undergoing a great deal of trauma, no thanks to the master's explorer father who stole them from their home at the end of the world. In an almost Chaplin-esque moment, Nimrod stops to look at a stuffed penguin(a homage to "City Lights"), which hints at the yearning this group has for their families back at Cape Royds, or some other gentoo colony. But in the meantime, Tom Popper will suffice. As surrogate parents go, he's not bad, even though the birds are being used to regain the divorcee's children's love. Because of the penguin's stature, their social anxiety, especially at the Guggenheim, gets misconstrued as comedy, which is not the case for a larger animal, like Buddy, the titular ape in the 1997 film about Trudy Lintz. Size matters. The moviegoer understands right away that the socialite's pet belongs in the wild, whereas the penguin, made human through the anthropomorphism of an enviro-propagandist doc like "March of the Penguins", as a result, seems more adaptable to civilization. To Popper's children, they're exotic lapdogs. At the museum(in a scene similar to "Buddy" where the ape goes mad at the Chicago World's Fair), the penguins abase themselves through the filmic language of slapstick comedy. While Popper tries to woo a new client, the rattled birds take advantage of the spilled water of an overturned champagne bucket by belly-sliding down the corkscrew-shaped museum layout. It's a cry for help, this seeming playfulness. The demented bunch transform the Guggenheim into a banal marine animal park. But this penguin act is filled with latent pathos. One after another, the birds utilize a sculpture as a ramp to help launch themselves over the retaining wall, landing haphazardly into the crowd below with total disregard for their own safety. It's a mass suicide attempt, played for laughs. There's a precedent for such nihilism. In "Encounters at the End of the World", the 2007 documentary about Antarctica, which features a segment on penguins(not the "fluffy" kind), filmmaker Werner Herzog elicits darker laughs from he moviegoer when he asks an ornithologist about the possibility of a gay penguin(no, but there is such a thing as penguin prostitutes; they're sluts about nesting rocks), or an insane penguin. True to Chaplin's words, the filmmaker captures a comic moment, albeit in the blackest sense, in long shot, of a penguin gone mad, as he races toward the mountains, away from the colony and feeding grounds, where his insatiable wanderlust will end in death from exhaustion and frostbite. No explanation is given for the bird's mental collapse, but in "Mr. Popper's Penguins", the first bird, Captain, sent ahead of the others, loses the egg he was put in charge of incubating, and becomes more distraught than the audience(and the movie itself) realizes. In his grief, the penguin, harboring delusions of being an eagle, leaps from a rooftop to avert capture from zoo authorities. It's only happenstance that the bird had previously entangled himself with hang-gliding equipment during the chase. Obviously, a penguin wouldn't know he has the wherewithal to fly, so his jumping, in a sense, is a decision he makes unilaterally from the anthropomorphic demands of the script(that supposes the bird knows he won't fall). To the scientists and other oddballs in the Herzog film, Antarctica is the end of the world, but to the Captain, it's simply home. As for Popper himself, he's no less crazy than Rene Russo in "Buddy". Like the "terra bus" driver at McMurdo Station who quit his cushy banking job to become a world traveler, the profit-minded realtor has the same epiphany about the world. It's not all about money. Reminiscent of "Close Encounters...", in which a man builds the Devil's Tower in the family home, Popper transforms his house into a slice of Antarctica. Like Roy, he slips into madness, choosing his obsession(saving the Captain's egg) over the family(he loses his job). Perhaps he had confused the northern lights for a close encounter of the first kind. Expand

My problem is that the penguins are having too much CGI in each scene that goes everywhere that the penguin can do. I don't know? It's just nothing to see the penguin could be more realistic in CGI, and I was thinking to myself that why couldn't use real penguins and make it work like training the penguin to be real and friendly. Here we see that the penguin can use too much CGI as uncomfortable way that it's just fake. The penguins are so much annoying that they do farts and screams a lot with getting catchphrase in our heads. The story is not developed (not compare to the book), the characters are pointless, and the scenes are so dumb and so silly. Jim Carrey did okay as the character of Mr Popper, and I could only say for that actor could be choice for putting him in the movie and sometimes could be funny for him. The movie is just a plain mediocre film that could be fun for kids, but I'm sure that this movie is more funny, but stupid. Expand

Sorry, translation Italian - English mechanical

And 'the little Popper 1976, aka "On the points", he moves easily between intercontinental frequency bands, radio transmitters, microphones and wireless systems. His father is always away and he has learned to use the "bandplan" that allows him to cancel the distances, at least those affective. Yeah, his dad. Its only Dad and magical, ever-traveling "in search of what they look" that will allow it to be remembered by the world scientific community. The years pass and with them the magic that surrounds them, "On the points" has grown and the microphone is not so high, now it is easier to talk to the "bald eagle", his feet are firmly on the ground. Her, Dad always magical, is always looking for what they are looking more than ever convinced "that occasions like this occur rarely." ... Spend so thirty years, you read that right, damn. Thirty long years. The small, loyal, kind and caring, "On the points" Mr. Popper has become. He lives in New York, is an important and enterprising real estate agent, like most intelligent people, and estimated dynamics is, unfortunately, a Mr. Popper's chock full of himself. Dresses with care, attention to the smallest details Professional, customers are not people, but prey, and as such must be captured and skinned. All for the greater glory dell'edificabilità and value which must always be invaluable. She loves the smell, especially the toner that fills the pages of contracts to be signed. However, it can happen that some clients try to "think again" ... well! Here's the face of Mr. Popper turns. The "Carrey dysmorphia", the face, takes over, accompanied by a fine oratorical gestures and mime. If it is true that "is as good as looking back thinking" is also true that "you do it later." And it is the "after" that bothers to our watchlist. The customer must have an idea of the post in perfect harmony with the first. In his performances, Popper is assisted by the faithful Miss Pippi Ophelia Lovibond / personal assistant who prepares the plans and prosecution periodicals. Not only the money the main interest of Mr. Popper has ambitions far more appetizing, to have the same decision-making power of Franklin Philip Baker Hall /, Reader Dominic Chianese / and Yates William Charles Mitchell / her employers. In order to do this rely on the three new "prey", attractive, tasty, hard to track down and tame. This is Mrs. Van Gundy Angela Lansbury / elderly, and the sole owner of the prestigious restaurant "Tavera On The Green" in Central Park site. Mrs. Selma Van Gundy has refused thousands of proposals. The net demand, dry, with no alternatives, that the three hungry manufacturers turn to Mr. Popper is this :-) You have a single occasion. Think you can conclude? You can well imagine the Popperian answer ^ _ ^ I'm sorry you know? I'm Tom Popper, close contracts like this, while I sleep. There are three other people who share some of the time of Mr. Popper, even four. Amanda Carla Gugino / ex-wife, Rick JamesTupper / ex-wife's new boyfriend, caring, helpful, nice. And his two sons. One day, unexpectedly, Tomas Popper receives an inheritance from his father, a frail, small-footprint box. Provenance, Antarctica. Content? A wonderful papua penguin. In the following days more arrived, six total. You are splendid examples of Papua penguins. These feathered ducks orchestral defined but birds fitted with wings that serve as flippers, basically monogamous, changes in the undulating, enchanting to see that companies in the bum The Tramp / the world's most famous Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin /, renew and always the life of our already overwhelming Mr. Popper. Tomas Popper's inventor dreams (sigh!), the man who always manages to surpass himself (Sbarequack!), which never disappoints anyone (sgrunt!), the ducks will learn that the worst thing of having everything outwhat you really miss? Directed by Mark Waters, on a story by Richard and Florence **** co-wrote by Sean Anders / Jared Stern / John Morris (Toy Story two three voice of Andy), which premiered at the Giffoni Festival is a film that I recommend to see. The occasion is good to deepen our knowledge of Tomas, it is tempting to spend some pleasant time, perhaps with their former because "occasions such as this occur rarely." Good click!

The question here is not the performances.....they are all good, and how awesome was it to see Angela Lansbury back on screen? My main issue was that this film was so completely unbelievable, or rather, the things that happened in the film have nearly no chance of happening. One could forgive this if the film dealt with say magic, fantasy or even if the film was animated. Such an unbelievable plot would be forgiven easily if it fell into one of the aforementioned categories, but it doesn't. It plays itself off to be true......that it could and would actually happen. Come on! Turning a New York apartment into an icey penguin sanitary populated with 6 loud penguins that are disturbing the neighbors? A penguin flying with a kite on its back? I could go on, but I won't. Regardless, this is an innocent ridiculous film that can be a blast for a family to watch! Expand

Its actually sad to see Jim Carrey in such movie.., he was a legend in comedy and I wanted to see a movie that in bar with his old hits , but this one was boring from the first scene till the very last one.

The Movie felt very cheap , the story is weak and the plot is predictive and has been done before.

The animated Penguins (which are the main characters) looked very fake and unconvincing , specially how they tried to give each one a character ,this actually made them more unreal and too silly even for small children.

I found almost all characters irritating : From Mr. Popper's Managers the one dimensional old men , they just read their lines each in his order without acting ...!
And his assistant and her desperate try to be funny repeating the same "joke" the whole movie , to even his kids , the boy who's trying to look as daddies boy , and the daughter's unreasonable teenage emotion bursts.

Nothing made sense in this movie and the it should not be labeled as "Comedy" cause it's far from it .
it's just another "family" movie like "Jingle All the Way" which you regret watching.

Fun for the whole family! Even if it's reliant on slapstick humour and kids jokes it will surely entertain the kiddies. I laughed several times too. Even if it's reliant on slapstick humour and kids jokes it will surely entertain the kiddies. I laughed several times too. Absolutely loved it, Mr. Poppers Penguins was a book I grew up with and I absolutely loved this film adaptation. Jim Carrey makes a hilarious Mr. Popper and the penguins were amazingly well done. How could one not like this movie? While it's all pretty predictable, Jim Carrey delivers and it's both funny and delightful. If you're looking for a movie that the whole family can enjoy together, this would be it. Expand

A lowest-common denominator family slapstick comedy filled with family fun for your entire family. Unfortunately, Mr. Popper's Penguins is only a coformist and flawed picture as any other of its kind. Anyway, Carrey comes back again, a funny picture arrives and a satisfying conclusion is notable.

Divertida y con escenas muy originales. Destaco la evolución del protagonista.

I liked this movie. The characters seemed real and their emotions were realistic. The penguins were usually funny, but not always. I thought it was worth a watch.

The script, simple and predictable, revolves around a cold real estate agent focused on work, career and profit, who ends up changing because of a set of seven penguins his father had kept, and sent him as a last gift. This film reminded meThe script, simple and predictable, revolves around a cold real estate agent focused on work, career and profit, who ends up changing because of a set of seven penguins his father had kept, and sent him as a last gift. This film reminded me of La Fontaine's old fables, in that it uses deeply sweet and emotional elements to convey important messages about the family. The "moral of the story", which all fables present at the end, also marks the end of the film. Jim Carrey is the main character but he brings nothing new in a recipe that has been on screen in other comic movies. Carla Gugino is a good supporter but doesn't do more than what she should do, like the rest of the cast. The only exception is Angela Lansbury, a great lady of cinema who is always good to see working. The difference is definitely the penguins. They behave like active characters, they're charming and will certainly impress children. Sometimes they may seem a bit artificial, but personally I found CGI compelling enough to give them realism. The soundtrack is good, but forgettable.

In one sentence, this movie is good, it talks about important values while entertaining the whole family well, but there is still something missing that can make this movie a truly breathtaking and unforgettable experience.

It's a good family movie to watch. Other then that it's pretty dumb. Inherits some penguins and gives them to his kids for there birthday and tries to hide it from his landlord.
