The script is deeper than it seems on the surface but there are many who refuse to open up and take it as anything more than face value. It seems like a lot of the reviews are trying to compare this movie with others or are unhappy with it because it's not what they wanted it to be. It doesn't surprise me that there are those who haven't appreciated the love it conveys whether too hardened or busy to notice, but this movie inexplicably touched my soul and it's one of my favorites. Hoffman tries to make it work but simply can't improv his way out of saying at least a few lines from this colossal disaster of a screenplay. Zach Helm is easily the worst writer in all of Hollywood. And I have heard of John August.

I thought this movie was both charming and half-way to hilarious. It's everlasting message is easy to understand, yet sinks to a depth in your heart that you are forced to reflect on your own life. And, of course, who could forget that I thought this movie was both charming and half-way to hilarious. It's everlasting message is easy to understand, yet sinks to a depth in your heart that you are forced to reflect on your own life. And, of course, who could forget that adorable little sock monkey(who only wanted a hug)?! Before I close this statement, I ask the world(or those of it reading this): Why can't we all be just a bit more like Mr.Magorium?Overall, i enjoyed this film immensely, and plan on watching it again :) Expand

Molly's finding her muse to complete her concerto at the end ties the movie together . Now she can still be a part of the magic in the store and feel the muse within herself to create more music. . I am sorry others did not see what I see in the movie. But then not everyone has to agree. Expand

Hit the exit running, and don't look back. A movie so bad that only adults with children should have to suffer it, and even then it may be worth it to pay the sitter to sit in your place.

Wow this movie is horrible. The "jokes" are not funny at all. I don't even think that little kids would find it at all funny

Even in the movies where anything is possible, laying down a bubblewrap dancefloor as a preventive measure against suicidal tendencies doesn't work, much to Molly's dismay as Mr. Magorium(Dustin Hoffman) pops, pops, pops away; Even in the movies where anything is possible, laying down a bubblewrap dancefloor as a preventive measure against suicidal tendencies doesn't work, much to Molly's dismay as Mr. Magorium(Dustin Hoffman) pops, pops, pops away; happier, but still harboring a death wish underneath all that crazy hair. Like his character in "Rainman", Mr. Magorium is a one-note performance, but this time Hoffman doesn't delight, he grates on our ears. That lisp, in concert with the toymaker's whimsical outlook on life, doesn't out-crazy Gene Wilder's performance in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", but it comes close. Before his rapture for one, Mr. Magorium wants Molly(Natalie Portman) to run the toy store. His charge used to be a promising pianist, but this film contends that the music of life is a higher calling, which makes "Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium" a sort of evil "Mr. Holland's Opus". Despite the happy ending, the film never resolves Molly's dream of being a famous composer. She's the hero. She brings the toy store back to life. But Molly is only a conduit for that block of wood Mr. Magorium entrusted to her. Now Molly's post-graduate rut is official: She's never leaving Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium. Expand

This is neither one of Dustin Hoffman's nor Natalie Portman's best movies. It's too slow;Dustin Hoffman doesn't play the snappy way he usually does,Natalie Portman is too sweet. I highly recommend you don't see this movie.

Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium is a heartfelt, magical movie, but it never really "rises to the occasion" like Mr. Magorium says. Instead, it tries to be whimsy, but it comes off as forced.

What a marvelous and happy movie. With such heart! This movie gives the viewer hope. "Magic" is in our hearts, what does your heart burn for?

Recommended for children and adults who lack "magic" in your hearts. Happy viewing!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a family comedy/fantasy film, with themes present including eccentricity, motivation and imagination. I found it to be a very charming film, charming and quirky with a delightfully eccentric main character. It features lots of bright lighting, with almost neon/fluorescent colours shown in most scenes, giving it the look of a cartoon or comic book come to life. It reminded me somewhat of the more recent Dr. Zeuss film adaptations. It also made me think of the film versions of Charlie & The Chocolate Factory - that and Big (the film starring Tom Hanks, which I loved as a kid). Having said that, I know that not everyone likes the artificially bright colours present in many kids TV shows and films these days, such as my mum who has said on ocassion that she feels such artificially, sickly sweet bright shows may bring on headaches and the like.

This is a good family film - there are plenty of special effects to keep young children interested/occupied (there are appearances from well known characters such as the one and only Kermit the Frog!) and I found myself enjoying some comic moments and other elements of the plot. The music featured is quite light and cheery, including some folk type songs.

Cast wise, the main character is played by Dustin Hoffman. I imagine some people may well have cringed when/if they heard of him playing such a role, as he's well known for much more serious roles. Having said that, it certainly looked like he very much enjoyed the role - well, ok, maybe thats just his acting but I very much liked the character, a somewhat zany eccentric type but (most importantly) a caring one. Meanwhile, Natalie Portman plays Molly Mahoney. She also does well in her role, as an unhappy young woman daunted by the prospect of taking on the emporium. Other cast members include Jason Bateman as the appointed accountant, who doesn't realise quite what sort of estbablishment he's dealing with (as you can probably imagine!). It was amusing to see him in a family friendly film, given he's usually in rather saucy/lewd teen comedy films. He's referred to as 'mutant' during the film.

The film does cover a difficult topic for children - that of death. It isn't by any means an especially sad or depressing film for children to watch, it is kid-friendly but the main plot does involve that topic all the same. Content wise, as I say this is a family friendly film, so there's relatively little to mention, other than one or two moderately sad scenes, with the implication being the death of somebody (although it isn't depicted visually as such, the viewer has to presume it happened). Due to this, the film has been rated U, so it should be suitable for just about anyone to watch (as long as the bright colours don't put you off too much).

Yes, I'd recommend this film as I found it to be relatively engrossing, fun and it features a good cast.
