This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The film has masterful performances by Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris, in addition to a very well-kept script and competent direction by Barry Jenkins. No wonder it won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2017.

Took me a while to see 'Moonlight', with the controversy it garnered when it was announced for the Best Picture Oscar and the amount of hate it's got here part of me was wary.

Finally getting round to seeing 'Moonlight', it turned out that it was more than well worth the while and that the wariness was not needed. 'Moonlight' is not a perfect film and may not have been my personal pick for the Best Picture award (for me that was 'La La Land' though that is not a popular opinion it seems). Truly admired what it set out to do and found it a brave and powerful film, despite what the detractors say there is far more to 'Moonlight's' appeal than politics, sexuality and race (clearly trying to find conspiracy theories and reasons for why a film they dislike is loved by others, without taking into account that the film simply just connected to and resonated with those who liked it).

'Moonlight' does end on an anti-climactic note, some of the last act is a bit rushed. A longer length would have helped as a result, it also would have helped make a couple of events in the first act a little clearer and not so choppy.

It may not say much new, despite the ground-breaking concept on paper with the exploration of lives rarely seen on film, and doesn't always have subtlety. Then again it is tackling far from subtle themes and a heavy subject, so that sort of was going to be inevitable.

However, 'Moonlight' is an exceptionally well made film. The cinematography and editing are some of the most eye-pleasing and best of that year, and can't find anything to fault the expertly handled direction. The music is cleverly mixed and has haunting power and fluidity.

Regarding the writing, it is not perfect, at times as said a little heavy-handed and vague in parts, but it is thought-provoking and handles very ambitious, relevant, important themes with power, truth and (mostly) delicacy. The story makes the most of the three act structure, it's handled simply but not simplistically and also handled cleverly and with passion, honesty and intelligence. Found myself relating quite a lot to and being moved significantly by the story and found the film handled a heavy and sensitive subject matter with a lot of relevance and importance today more than admirably.

Can't fault the acting, doing wonders with compellingly real characters and strongly defined character relationships (especially the central one). Much has been made of Maharshala Ali and Naomie Harris and deservedly with two of the best performances that year, Ali especially is extraordinary. It is easy though to overlook Alex R. Hibbert, Trevante Rhodes and Ashton Sanders and one shouldn't, as they are just as worthy (particularly Sanders).

Overall, didn't completely blow me away but very well done and with a lot to admire. 8/10 Bethany Cox

The film tackles issues people may not have even crossed that average viewer's mind and does it brilliantly. It does not over dramatize, or over romanticize any moment. Everything is exactly how it should be. It provides insight into all types of challenges mixed into one perspective. Camera work also makes the movie feel first person. Scenes where the camera is half submerged into the ocean invokes nostalgia of when you were young and could barely keep your head above water. Everytime the film leaps in time to a different point in Chiron’s life, the viewer has a lot of catching up to do. Chiron changes on the surface in a substantial manner. However, eventually, you realize that each and every Chiron is the same on the inside. The message of self identity in this film is hammered home. I go back to my point of the film being a realistic painting. Many directors aim for twists on their films to make it feel authentic to themselves, similar to how Picasso may skew his paintings to make it identifiable as “a Picasso” . Barry Jenkins' approach was to make this film authentic to the viewer. He focused on the truth of the matter at hand. He found success in making the matter relatable to viewers who may have never thought to relate to Chiron. Expand

Despite a few draggy scenes, "Moonlight" is heavy on the visual storytelling while gliding along like a paintbrush to a canvas. It delivers an effective story of a gay man's identity through his three crucial stages of life.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Moonlight takes the spot for my second favorite movie of all time. The concept/theme is interesting but the way it’s executed is out of this world and makes that concept/theme so much deeper and more engaging. The writing, directing and acting are all great and this is a movie that proves that you don’t need to have a total A-list cast to make a fantastic and Academy award winning movie; the only actor in this movie who I knew before seeing it was Mahershala Ali, who gave a phenomenal performance and deserved the Academy award that he won for his work in the movie. Chiron is a unique and complex character and it’s really engaging to watch how his personality affects him and his relationships with those he cares about as he grows up. The structure of this movie is also really cool, as it’s divided into 3 sections that each detail a part of Chiron’s life and how he changes as he goes from a boy to a teenager to an adult while still remaining the same in many ways. This is a film that showcases that no matter how old you get or how much mental development you go through, you’ll still be the same person in a lot of ways. The way that the movie flows and transitions through these 3 sections is great and doesn’t feel disruptive to it at all or cause any awkward or abrupt moments. Another thing that makes this movie more unique and complex than it may appear at first glance is how the movie is described in a google search. You’ll see it as “Gay & lesbian/Drama” or “Drama/LGBT” and a synopsis will talk about falling in love. I definitely agree with the drama, and it’s undeniable that Chiron is a gay character, but this movie isn’t about romance or LGBTQ related themes. It certainly includes them and makes sure we know about them, but Moonlight is really a coming of age story that’s rare and underrepresented in cinema and that’s part of what makes this movie as good as it is. I’m sure that there are people in the real world who have stories similar to that of Chiron and yet we never hear about any of them. Moonlight is a film about stories we don’t normally hear or care about. The struggle that Chiron goes through is a product of his upbringing and the environment that surrounds him throughout his life, and it’s a struggle that I’m sure so many other people will be able to relate to. This movie speaks to and for all of those people, and in that way it’s a fascinating work of art. Via all of this, Moonlight is incredibly realistic and accurate of real world situations, something I always appreciate in a film. This movie is a must-see for people who appreciate the genres that form it’s story and plot and well deserves the Academy award for Best Picture that it won. Expand

Poignant is, main character, Chiron’s alienation from his peers and through the world of a child, you have to work out why he is different.

Meanwhile the score excellently captures the many different moods of his internal journey, fear, love, torment, betrayal and reconciliation.

Chiron is perceived as a victim and bullied until one striking incident. His life is shown at 3 different stages in 3 acts and each offer the viewer something different.

A lot of thought is put behind the story and you can see the intelligence in the smaller details. It took me a second watch to fully enjoy and appreciate the depth behind this masterpiece.

La banda sonora es bellísima, lo único que no me gustó fue que se deshicieran de Juan tan repentinamente, ya que así se tiró por el drenaje toda su breve aparición en la vida de Chiron. Expand

If there's any lesson to be learned, it's that Moonlight's subtlety enhances its message and themes, and they don't play it safe, which is fairly hard in a social atmosphere that wouldn't praise its message. What I love about this film is that it isn't afraid to show the reality for its protagonist. Homosexuality in his community is a rough subject that isn't received well and is sadly filled with prejudice. There are some story hiccups, but the visuals are well suited for its nuanced theme. I'm going to talk about the best of this movie first and I'll begin with a big praise towards its WONDERFUL cinematrogtaphy and directing. All the shots in this movie are beautiful and the color palette adds to the intended mood of what the audience is watching. This is one of the most visually stunning movies I've seen in recent memory, I swear I could only rewatch it too see the beautiful shots this movie has. The performances are great and add to the realism this movie tries to give.

What this movie, for me at least, doesn't do that great, is everything else. The plot wasn't that great or interesting. The movie failed to make me care about the characters and the plot, because it wasn't too interesting. There's a huge plot hole between Chiron's adolescence and its adulthood, I don't know, maybe some more minutes of runtime to see what happened to him during that time gap, I think that could've added to his character, and most of the movie felt pretty standard and forgettable, nothing too bad, but anything great.

However the ending is so heartbreaking and perfect when you stop and think about it, the last shot of the movie is one of my favorites in recent memory, I think that the ending was what redeemed this movie.

This isn't my favorite movie of 2016 and it's not a great movie, it's good, the cinematography, acting, directing and the ending is what gives this movie a lot of points. It's a pretty bland and forgettable movie for the most part but those aspects I just mentioned are what save this movie from being bad.

The movie start phlegmatic, very watery and you can't orientate much. There is one a little bit weird protagonist, which story and reasons for that silent, outsiderish essence are unclear. In my opinion - an important pass. Anddd there were some unnecessary s*** in this movie, I must admit. Anyway, as I said, the beginning is perceived to be slightly phlegmatic, but suprisingly you get used to it - the atmosphere and the time. The protagonist performance was brilliant, no doubt. Basically, except some passes, at times confusion and the whole time too stretched story, I like it, I don't know, it was touching. Expand

Young Gay people are bullied and treated the same no matter what "class" of society you grow up in. This guy had the triple whammy of being gay, growing up in the hood, and having a crack-head mother who mistreated him. That is what made the movie interesting for me. How he somehow makes it to adulthood and survives with all those obstacles. The acting and direction is excellent throughout and is worth seeing. I'm glad I saw it on Blu Ray so I could turn on the close-caption feature, otherwise I wouldn't have understood some of the dialogue if I were in a theater. Expand

I will always appreciate a film that shows a demographic that doesn't get much mainstream representation. It is a beautifully made film with some of the best use of colour and cinematography of any film last year. However, I felt that the technique of skipping ahead to different stages in Chiron’s life while interesting meant missing out on his development and results in a lack of connection to the character and dulled the plot. I thought that the beauty of this film both in its message and aesthetic made it deserving of the Best Picture win although I was sure that La La Land was going to take it and I was rooting for Manchester by the Sea or Hell or High Water. It's a good film. Not entirely entertaining or exciting but well made and well acted. Expand

Extraordinary sensibility, maturity and editing, the picture goes through 3 different phases in the life of a young man going through a lot of things. After each one of those phases ends it leaves you wanting more, to know more about that child and getting more of that particular actor. The casting is also on point and every actor carries the story and the mannerisms of this kid so well. It´s one of those films that keeps growing on you more and more even after watching and stays days in your mind. Somehow it is not sad, it is quite pleasant and peaceful. It´s life. Probably the most unquestionable win for best picture at the Oscars in years since the film hasn´t got a single flaw. Total agreement with the critics average and that outstanding 99/100. A MUST see. Moonlight has directed by Barry Jenkins and also the brilliant roles of some actors like Mahershalaali Ali and Naomi Harris can be seen in the film.As an English literature student of the university , in my opinion, we can see that the writer of the story wants to support black people. he wants to show the world that we should pay attention more to this class of the society. we can compare this movie to the Lesson story by Toni Cade and i want to tell they are resembled together in some cases. In the film we can see that the poor black kid must burden a lot of hardships to live. In another part of the story we have a mother that she does not pay attention to his child. she drowns to her bad works. When we see Naomi's role in the film, maybe we can conclude that she represents so many mother's lives in some societies. the biggest theme of the story is forgiveness. although the child didn't have a good mother but he accept his mother's apologize. this theme reminds us that the great love between mother and her son never destroys.so many believe that this is a kind of celestial love that God has given to his humans. But all in all, there are more a than few moments that feel out, on the one hand the three act story-line is a good concept and can be well played but on the other hand it can make the movie feel disconnected and in this case, some scenes do feel like that, and it never really lets you form a connection with the characters on the whole. Also on its downside is the fact that the final part feels oddly enough not grounded enough, which I find a big irony considering that's the point that seemed to be so emphasized in the first two parts. All in all, I think Moonlight is a solid movie of a theme that you rarely see in big productions, and it's all around good cast, some memorable scenes here and there and an excellent second part lets it stand on its own as a good movie showcasing a little bit of the big complicated thing that is living. I can't recommend it to everyone, but if you are a movie fan (and I mean that in the I like to watch all types of movies) it can be an interesting experience. Final verdict: 7.3 Expand

At Its Core, An Insubordinate Drama Where Transcends Racial Hate & Homophobia

One of the most eloquent contenders for the Academy Awards is Barry Jenkins' neo-creation, if we interpret it in a superficial way, illustrates three formative periods in correlative gradation of a gay black male, however, scrutinizing it from the inside out, we notice a limpid treatment about a little-known environment by huge studios, one where poverty, loneliness, orphanhood, violence, drug abuse, and intolerance ravage to any boy residing by such degrading places. Not necessarily you must be African-American or gay to converge your own existential opinions with Chiron's, this is because it's defined as a universal tale both in effect and purpose; an important epic supported by the reality.

It begins with a circular tracking shot to place the audience into the perverse place where the main character will have to grow up, an atmosphere which breaths dioxide formed by the miasma of bullets, prostitution, vices, scams, sex, narcotics and death. The films encompassing African-American marginalized populations tends to implement certain hallmarks produced by social disruption, which is caused by deficiencies (social exclusion, police brutality or educational neglect) leading an unsuspected doctrinal starting point. Jenkins, who's devoted to these "stereotypes" of films about black race, delineates naturally a Miami punished by the sun, space where Chiron's hilarities, notions, dreams, disappointments, learnings, decisions, and fluids that go from scarlet blood or saline sobs to the experimental sperm were fixed to torrid precarious ground of American ghettos, experiences richly raised through three temporary gradations (childhood, youth and adulthood) marked by three irrefutable denotations of the character in question (Little, Chiron, and Black).

"You can be gay, but you don't have to let nobody call you a ****

Narratively, it can be compared with dense, epic and fatiguing Richard Linklater's "Boyhood", "Moonlight" employs narrative in sections as standalone episodes comprising altogether an intense realism, an initiative bracing the trip and psychic and emotional spurs of the characters. The whole product is much more than the sum of its parts. It expels conviction, transformation and freedom of all kinds; It's something that concerns you and gets under your skin beyond the closing credits. Fractional exposition allows more intimate contact with what happens to Little, young or mature man; each chapter works as an independent installment, splendidly played by an ardent diverse cast, photography as real as visceral, a soundtrack combines emotional position of a given moment and a series of components employs simplicity and truthfulness as info carrier. It entails entirely the kind of film which is imperative for us more than ever, one that talks about what can happen a common human being and grows apart itself from the oneiric. It's patent the limited trust around nobility of our existence to conceive art, we make other worlds rather than appealing infinity of opportunities are around us. The visuals are marvelous, repel the tendency of those recurring feature films using desaturation and dreadmist to portray real-life occurrences. Here, fluorescent bright colors come together dark contrast in order to animate and give a distinct personality to each planned segment, mise-en-scène intensifies its fantastic beauty with precise camera movements at the hands of skilled James Laxton. Music, light and camera aesthetically shape the movie, equipping with sensitivity and depth Chiron's life, while simultaneously, it reduces the inherent hostility of the American atmosphere. Visual and writing screenplay combined with tremendous credibility, while John (one of the most humane performances of a drug dealer in the cinema history by California native Mahershala Ali) recites to Chiron the origin of his nickname (Blue), the story applies optionally sparkling moonlight involvement in the last scene, in which he invites us to do the same he did, to try to define us, not to fear, to be who want to be, to develop a global principle entrusted to humanity; living in freedom.

Barry Jenkins' "Moonlight" officially starts the participation of two of the social groups more unjustly repudiated by contemporary society: black race and homosexuals. Each person can draw deductions, opinions and criticisms, but the truth is that what these men and women—dedicated to cause a change—have made is a fearless and decisive social and filmic feat, which's realized by universal subjects such as youth, rashness, self-improvement, love, masculinity, and life. "Moonlight" is a grade-A drama, literally powerful, visually linked to the truth; its power doesn't come from complex intelligible narrative tricks, the charm lies in connection with the characters and the unintentional identification with coexistence human nature: acceptance (tolerance).

This movie isn't about happening a lot but feeling a lot. Deep suffering from the burden of being a gay man in a black community, being lost on the journey to your heart, not knowing the answer to the question "who am I?". The film doesn't just show all this but make you feel it in a very special way.
What makes this movie special is how it so touching without much happening and how it tells so much without showing a lot.
The visuals (especially the light) are as great as the actors and the story. For me there couldn't be an more deserving oscar winner.

But this movie isn't for everyone. If you want a movie which surprises you with it's many plot twists, which shocks you or anything with a high tension, this movie isn't for you.
The plot is predictable, the tempo is slow but the film gives you something different sympathy and empathy for this black homosexual man growing up. If you don't care about people this movie isn't for you

It is hard to describe the plot in a sentence or two, but I can tell you the movie is told in three different parts, one as a kid, teen and a grown man. The boy's name is Chiron, and his mother(like many at the time) was a crack-addict and would never give Chiron the love he needed. Chiron, as a young boy, met a friendly drug dealer and his girlfriend, who are the only ones sharing affection with him. The dealer, Juan, and his girlfriend take care of him by feeding him, and letting him spend the night on occasions. As he grows up, Chiron gets bullied even more, and it almost seems as everything gets worse. Having trouble with his identity, he meets a troublemaker named Kevin who actually has feelings for him, and they experience sexuality. But of course, there are always more conflicts for him to experience. When a grown man, he becomes someone else, not who the real, "little" Chiron is. "Moonlight" is a hard movie to watch at many parts, including the second act. It is also hard to relate to these characters, bullied, black, gay and surrounded by drugs. The real reason why this movie is so emotional, so captivating is because of the incredible performances by ALL, and the extraordinary directing from Barry Jenkins. I left this movie crying, because at the end it's almost like a fill in the blank, you have to understand from what Chiron has gone through, and how he turns out. Many people dislike this movie, to be mean towards black people, and I assure you, if no one told me or you this had an all-black cast, you wouldn't notice. Expand

The movie is good but never exceptional and thus not really worth all the hype it has gotten so far. Sure, it's quality work but not reaching some dazzling heights that 224 movie awards and 204 nominations are hinting at.

I am disappointed by Mahershala Ali getting a best supporting actor Oscar for this. I mean, I really like the man – especially in Netflix's "Luke Cage" –, but his screen-time is so limited that he's barely in the movie! Is it really worthy of the Oscar?

It is a brilliant character study and I have to say bravo to Barry Jenkins who made this movie. I believe that best aspect about this movie is that the movie does not show the character as a separate character that we watch but the movie made it into a movie where we experience together with Chiron. We don't always see Chiron to choose every movement but just watch him to experience the pain. The pain that suffers does not feel like a third person watching a person suffers but the audience suffers together. Every character is important in the movie and supports Chiron as who is right now. As we see the other performance including the incredible Mahershala Ali as Juan the father figure of Chiron. Some people are saying it is overrated but they are not understanding the human raw emotion that goes into those character. That is why I am giving a 10/10 because of it's raw emotions in the movie and the raw performance by the actors. Expand

From the casting, to the direction, performances, cinematography, and music it tells a great story. Besides that, the story doesn't do anything special that would make me want to repeatedly watch it. I feel as though its a movie worth watching once for the message, but after that you won't feel an urge to watch it again like other movies. This isn't necessarily an entertaining movie, but rather an informative one. Expand

When people ask me “What was the best film of the year?” I say Moonlight. This is a dark, gritty story that felt like it wasn’t being told because anyone decided to tell it, but more like fate had been leading Barry Jenkins and company towards this their whole lives. The obvious comparison would be Boyhood, and it feels that grand in scope, but more timely. If you had told me that they filmed all of the iterations of the main character, Chiron, over a twenty year span with the same actor, I would have believed you. However, if there is one thing I will remember from Moonlight down the line (because it is a little heavy for a regular spot in the rotation), it will be Mahershala Ali. I loved Dev Patel’s performance in Lion, and in many ways it was more athletic, but I would have turned off the Academy Awards after the first card had Ali not won. The scene at the dinner table could have been his only scene in the movie, and he would have earned that Oscar. That is all. 9.2/10 Expand

It treats its characters with so much care and sensitivity. This is an epic recapturing of adolescent and early adult life similar to epics like Boyhood and Yi Yi, only it's on a different level of filmmaking, because this really exemplifies laser-focused storytelling, from its beautiful cinematography to its masterful dialogue. I felt so many raw emotions watching this as Chiron (the protagonist) takes each of his steps transitioning into adulthood, forming his identity with regards to race, masculinity, and sexuality. To see it all unfold the way it did made me feel lucky to be on the viewing seat instead of being in the type of environment Chiron was forced to live in. This film is definitely a heavy one, but despite its rawness I think I'm still going to see it again in theaters just to appreciate all of the poignancy and detail in it in how it addresses the tougher aspects with regard to masculinity, sexuality, race, etc. Overall, definitely a must-see. While certainly enlightening and supported by strong acting and directing, I felt the storylineMoonlight offers a unique perspective of isolation imposed on a homosexual african american male growing up in a violent, intolerant environment. While certainly enlightening and supported by strong acting and directing, I felt the storyline intentionally dragged with forced silence, perhaps to emphasize the hardships and loneliness of Chiron. Although I am glad to have experienced the movie in NO WAY can I agree with the politically correct endorsements of the "critics" in rating it 99 nor can I accept the academy's decision to award it Best Movie over La La Land. In fact, I felt Lion, Manchester, and Fences were all equal, if not better offerings. Expand

Man, just finished watching this, and what an emotional ride... like other reviewers said, it's too bad that the subject matter isn't more appealing to a wider audience, but that's fine... The only badMan, just finished watching this, and what an emotional ride... like other reviewers said, it's too bad that the subject matter isn't more appealing to a wider audience, but that's fine... I'm just glad that I got to see it. The only bad thing I can say about this movie is that the medium it uses to tell the stories it tells and touch on the themes it touches limit it from going too deep into any one of the stories or themes. Extrapolated further, individually, analysing any one of them (being black in America, school to prison pipeline, childhood psychology, drug culture, American "low income" culture, other pathologies, sexuality, belongingness in community, being true to one's self, and more)... seeing this movie as a balcony on which many of these themes and stories are perched upon give you insight on a lot here... This movie is very dense (in a good way), it made me uncomfortable, sad, happy, pensive and more. Expand

First of all, it's not a 99/100 film.
This is a story of a kid. Story of his life. It's very good and real so you can feel the character and his problems. Just a real story, don't wait something special.

This is the most beautiful film I have ever watched. Cinematography, acting, directing, script, subject matter. A24 has solidified themselves as THE publishing house at the top of Hollywood. Absolutely magnificent.
