This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Solid action movie. Takes a bit too long to get going with lots and lots of exposition in the beginning. Some of the stunts that were done practical get demoted by cgi fx (they built a real train and crashed it off of a cliff but the landing looks cgi heavy).
Also there are a few plotholes concerning the ai-entity. It is presented as this omnipotent hacker, that can hack everything and even emulate voices. The solution to that is "analog radio because it is not digital and this not hackable", but i mean.. radio stations also send digital output via analog radio? Later there is a scene where Simon Peggs character uses the autopilot of his car.. which somehow is immune to getting hacked all of a sudden? Besides that it was an entertaining 150 minutes which could (should?) Have been 90-110 minutes at most. Still looking forward to part 2. Hopefully it can reach the heights that mi:6-fallout brought us

But coming to story side it was pretty normal story line not as expected .From start of the story it was normal it can be Good. The Director only focused on the action scenes and to improve the action and thrills of audience than older parts .But Really the action scenes are mind blowing compare to older MI movies. No doubt direction was good as other Mission Impossible series .Lets see what happens in part two..Overall great Movie must watch.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tom Cruise reprises his role as Ethan Hunt, the enigmatic and resourceful IMF agent, with the same level of commitment and charisma that has come to define the character. The film propels audiences into a web of intrigue and danger as Hunt and his team navigate a labyrinthine narrative involving rogue agents, international espionage, and a potential global threat.
In conclusion, "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One" is a testament to the franchise's ability to reinvent itself while staying true to its core elements. With Tom Cruise's magnetic presence, breathtaking action sequences, and a narrative that keeps audiences guessing, the film stands as a commendable addition to the series. As the plot barrels forward, leaving audiences eagerly anticipating the next installment, it reaffirms the enduring appeal of the "Mission: Impossible" franchise as a staple of espionage cinema that shows no signs of slowing down.

The plot really confusing. The villain met Hunt for first time, why just kill them all? Everything seems made up for some actions. But still, a great, enjoyable action spy film this year.

PastIn this latest outing in the long running spy franchise, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his crew find themselves up against an omnipresent artificial intelligence that threatens the lives of not just him and his team, but the whole world. Past and familiar faces also get involved and complicate things further as he tries to race to stop this global evil by any means necessary. First off, seeing how this film was going to be split into two parts, I was a bit skeptical at how much of a cliffhanger this one would have, and if it's ending would either frustrate or satisfy me. Surprisingly, this film feels the most like its own part moreso than most part ones out there for other films and franchises. It ends in a relatively satisfying spot while still leaving me eager enough to see what happens in the next part. Storywise, this thing is ALL over the place, and the same goes for all the characters too. This film feels over stuff to a fall and so many senses. The story twists and turns faster than I could ever keep track of, and there are simply far too many characters and motives to keep track of. Performance-wise, Cruise does what he does best, and definitely doesn't disappoint with all the jaw-dropping stunts that he pulls off in this. His performance itself also feels grounded, gritty, and raw, more than ever in this franchise. Other familiar standouts include Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg. Rebecca Ferguson and Vanessa Kirby also return from some of the franchise's previous entries. The only standout here that I absolutely did not like was Hayley Atwell, who's character was utterly frustrating and useless the entire film. All she did was three things: pickpocket, run away, and play damsel in distress. Overall, not exactly memorable in terms of story, especially when it was as messy and all over the place as this one was, and there's little to no character development, given how over stuffed it was. However, it also showed that Cruise definitely has no intention of slowing down anytime soon despite his age and how long he's been doing this for, and you gotta give the man props for that! It's definitely fun enough while it lasts, but doesn't rank among the best in the franchise. Expand

So, admittedly, that consideration was on my mind as I screened the first half of the final installment in this long-running action-adventure franchise. To its credit, director Christopher McQuarrie’s latest has a lot going for it – an intriguing plot with a strong cautionary tale message for us about the potential dangers of AI, an array of superbly staged action sequences, the welcome addition of some much-needed comic relief (something this series has often lacked) and a fine cast of supporting performers (especially the expanded role of Vanessa Kirby, who was woefully underused in the franchise’s previous release). However, with that said, there are some elements that could use improvement. For starters, the picture is simply too long; with a runtime of 2:43:00 (and this is just the first half of the story!), the film is definitely bloated and could stand some judicious editing, especially in the action sequences, several of which begin to try one’s patience after a while. Then there are certain aspects of the narrative that are predictable, formulaic, and, at times, implausible (particularly in the picture’s overlong final act train adventure sequence), qualities that are not as apparent (or at least better hidden) in previous outings. Finally, there are the underwhelming performances of the IMF crew (Tom Cruise, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames). The leader of the pack (Cruise) comes across more like someone whose presence is designed largely to carry the plot rather than serve as a genuine, actively engaged protagonist, and his two colleagues are underused, seemingly playing sidekick roles rather than participating as key characters (unlike previous installments in the series). All told, this is by no means a bad picture, but it could have been better, especially with it being the series finale. It makes me wonder if the full story of “Dead Reckoning” might have been better executed in a single, slightly longer offering than as two separate feature-length releases. That might have solved the issues noted above, and it may have eliminated that nagging “part” problem I wrote about, allowing the picture to stand on its own two feet as a single vehicle. We’ll have to wait another year to see how it all plays out, but I can’t exactly say I’m holding my breath about it. Expand

However, it does seem to turn Ethan into a side character while elevating Grace, a female character who constantly outwits Ethan and makes him look like an idiot, and outdoes him for no reason other than achieving a higher ESG DEI score. It is explained in the film that she is just a glorified pickpocket, yet she pulls the wool over Ethan half a dozen times and Ethan inexplicably keeps coming back for more so much that it ***SPOILER*** gets an actual female who he should care about killed. If so much of the film weren't so impressive, this would destroy the film for me, entirely.

But, it also has a great concept for a plot that is executed well. I am interested to see what happens in the finale. It would have been better had this been only 1 film, but I am sure the budget ballooned so much due to Covid that a 2nd film was required to recoup costs. Another reason why it isn't rated higher.

This is an Ethan Hunt film. Don't make it about some nobody named Grace that makes Ethan turn into a moron. That definitely made people in my theater vocally groan at points. And don't put marginally funny Austin Powers car gags into a 15 minute chase seen that is already a little too long. And perfectly timed train parachutes are not appropriate for Mission Impossible. Stop trying to be a Marvel Movie with incessant jokes every 5 minutes.

Ethan Hunt is called upon to recover two mysterious keys connected precisely to this mysterious AI and the mission takes him to the deserts of Saudi Arabia, to Rome, Venice and the Alps. With a production budget of $290 million, it is the most expensive film of the series and also one of the most expensive in the history of cinema.
The film sees once again Tom Cruise in the role of the timeless Ethan Hunt; Christopher McQuarrie (Academy Award-winning screenplay for “The Usual Suspects”) as director and screenwriter; but we also find Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby and Henry Czerny. While among the new entries Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham.
This episode is like a dizzying ride, a constant escape, a race against time.
The cinematography captures exceptional landscapes and fast-paced urban scenes, the detailed sets and the use of well-crafted effects and CGI are blended flawlessly, creating a visually immersive experience that enhances the storytelling.
The effective direction works and gives its best in every sequence, especially in the more action ones (the chases are memorable - including those in the streets of Rome - which characterize the main segments of the film) and in the final tense with the train. Perhaps some scenes suffer from the "already seen" effect, perhaps they lack more original ideas, better management of twists and greater exploration of certain narrative or thematic details, but these alleged shortcomings are counterbalanced by Ethan's more reflective and intimate side (which emerges like never before in this farewell journey to the saga) and by the melancholic dynamics of his group of friends.
The screenplay alternates and knows how to balance intrigue, suspense and humour; while the staging, with a fast pace, is very spectacular. Tom Cruise sews the film on himself (more and more breathtaking, dangerous and crazy his stunts: here Tom Cruise's jump with the motorcycle from the top of a mountain).
Very relevant in this work is the central and problematic topic of modern technology (and its use), as well as an increasingly unpredictable development of digital and Artificial Intelligence.
This theme is closely linked to current events, and which allows the work to mainly explore the ethical implications and possible consequences of AI in the world of espionage (but not only).
The script, albeit superficially, raises questions about morality, autonomy and the ever-changing role of technology in the field of global security; but also interesting food for thought on a humanity that has the responsibility of fighting against a digital technology that has developed too much and that can only be stopped by opposing it with the logic of analog and ethics.
In short, the seventh chapter of the series, between its strengths and weaknesses, and between repeated twists and adrenaline-pumping action sequences, continues to give emotions.
A very enjoyable and compelling film in itself, which, apart from a few flaws and signs of tiredness, is confirmed overall as one of the most successful episodes of the saga. Waiting for the second part which will be the last chapter starring Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt…

The only character who seemed mildly sluggish was Cruise himself as Ethan, but the direction was more than competent, and the plot moved along even though nothing very original or interesting happened. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I watched this film a little bit ago and I have been thinking about it more and more. I am an extreme mission impossible fan and I am deeply disappointed. I want to preface this by saying that this is not a bad film. This movie was funny, it has a great score, and my goodness it is gorgeous. But there were so many things in this movie that just felt off to me and many of them I can not fully explain why. The writing and dialogue in this movie at times just felt a bit off to me. I just rewatched Fallout (mission impossible 6) and wow does that movies dialogue far exceed anything in this movie. In Fallout it feels snappy but in this movie it feels almost like a parody of it self. Every scene in fallout transitions so nicely from one action sequence to another only interjecting to press the story along when needed. And wow the action sequences in this film come nowhere near the last few films. There is nothing that puts you at the edge of your seat in this film, not a single moment. The train sequence was cool but it goes on for way too long, the cliff jump is cool but it lasts for like two seconds and it does not feel like it has any stakes. Driving through Rome was funny but it was not tense in the slightest. And my GOODNESS was there so much pickpocketing. Look at the Halo jump scene from Fallout, the music blaring in your ears and speeding up as you get closer to the ground, hunts frantic screams, the warning beforehand not to pull the parachute late otherwise you'll explode followed by Hunt pulling it at THE LAST POSSIBLE SECOND, the guiding system screaming in his ears to pull up, the constantly updating and ever decreasing elevation and THAT SHOT when he flips Walker over and it REVEALS HOW CLOSE THE GROUND IS. This all combines to become an amazingly tense sequence. There is nothing like this in the new film, no moments that made me feel like the Halo jump did. I may need to give it a rewatch, read some other reviews and maybe I will see the light but at the moment I just do not understand what people are watching. I am hoping that part two will justify what happened here in part one. Also Gabriel is just not scary nor threatening and the fight scenes are not that good. Oh I love Hayley Atwell though I thought she was wonderful. There are so many more things I want to write about but all in all its not a bad movie just a very disappointing one. Many people seem to be loving it. I just wish I was one of them. Expand

Action set pieces was good. I particularly like the train scene. That one was really well done except the weird cut off transition that depleted the tension.

I do hope part 2 will answer a lot more question and make part 1 a better movie.

Tom Cruise’s next project should be producing a good Uncharted movie as well.

I genuinely don’t understand the early enthusiasm for this film, and I would largely consider myself a fan of the Mission Impossible series even the ones people find questionable like Mission Impossible 2. Moderate but not heavy specific spoilers ahead. The writing and narrative structure is really bizarre . The audience is given information well ahead of the long time protagonist, Ethan Hunt played by Tom Cruise. Therefore outside of the first 30 minutes of the film, there is no mystery for us as audience members. The overwhelming vast majority of the film Ethan is running around trying to find out information we as audience members are given in the first 15 minutes of the film. Then, there is new character of Grace who is present in the majority of the film. I was unable to connect with Grace, and was left scratching my head as to why the IMF was so loyal and willing to put their lives on the line for this thief who complicates their mission at every turn.

When Ethan Hunt is presented with a choice of saving Grace or a returning character, I wanted to shout at the screen for Hunt to save the returning character. If you sympathize and connect with Grace, you’ll probably enjoy this film much more than I did.

The primary antagonist lacks personality by design. Coming off the great performance of Henry Cavill as John Locke, I really struggled to get excited about defeating the faceless villain.

There’s also a new group of characters representing the American governments interest who constantly sabotage the IMF team, but Ethan Hunt is still dedicated to saving these characters. I left this film frustrated with Ethan Hunt as a character. If you’re just going for the action sequences and care very little for the narrative, characters, or structure, I didn’t find anything in this entry to be particularly memorable. This was by no means a terrible film, but it was dreadfully average and by no means a must see film even for fans of the Mission Impossible series. I’m left confused and feeling like the critics saw a different film than I did.

I have no idea why this movie has such a high rating. It is not all that great. Very predictable plot meets mostly cliche action. There were a couple of scenes I really enjoyed but mostly mediocre stuff.

The biggest gripe I have is that it's just goofy. It feels like the plot to a bad superhero movie or the plot to a spinoff ff film. The villains, yes villains without spoiling anything, were not only lackluster but goofy to then point where I questioned if I was in a MI movie and not an Austin powers one. The main motivations of one of the bad guys isn't clear as he works for the other one. He has tech in the film, especially involving a casket, where I laughed a little when I saw it. Looked like something out of a B level superhero film. The direction they went with the main top level bad guy is a direction I just don't like. It makes the stakes feel higher but they honestly never do anything that special with it. This concept has been done before and way better in those other fimms. To a point, where I thought for sure they would going to utilize it way better and way more menacing but everytime they dropped the ball. Even though I don't like the direction they're going I can see the potential it can bring but hopefully they do a better job with it in the next one. Now, let's talk about the charcters. Ethan Hunt feels like he's regressed in the film and not in a natural way. I know he's running up against the biggest threat but this film feels like he's not even running his own movie anymore. Cruise is still good in the film but the film feels like just one big chase sequence stretched out for no reason. Plenty of times Ethan could have been killed and would have been beneficial for the top bad guy to do so and could probably get him killed but they never do. Hunt just feels like a dude along for the ride going from place to place while being spoon fed information. The second character I had the biggest problem with is a newcomer and how they introduce her to the team. Without spoiling anything, she basically makes Hunt look like a fool the whole movie and makes Hunt look like a side charcter in his own movie. She's without a doubt the most annoying charcter in the film with tropes molded to create her charcter. She's a walking cliche for most of the film and gets out of scenarios she shouldn't. They even say she's not a spy the whole movie but can invade the spies at every turn. It's both a joke and sad that she is in the film (especially because the outcome of her charcter does something to another better charcter). Luckily the rest of the charcters on the main team are great here. The only other charcters that kind of suck are the two high generals. Felt like cliche trope "spy authority figures". The main villains aren't good but the actor does a fine enough job. No actor does a bad job for what they are given. Now to the most disappointing aspect being the stunts. The marketing for this film had "most dangerous" stunts but just never felt thay way. A lot of them are cool but are blown out of the water in comparison to the water scene from rogue Nation and almost all of the stunts from fallout. If they really were that dangerous, that's awesome, but it didn't translate to the screen. Felt a lot more bad green screen stunts more than the ones we got in rhe past two films. Not one stunt in this one was cooler than those other two films and that's a let down. Also, the action sequences didn't hit as hard as the bathroom scene in fallout or even the knife fight scene in RN. A lot of bad shaky cam and a lot of cuts. The story doesn't help here either. It's literally one big scavenger hunt with a side plot of also being one big chase sequence. Everyone knows where everyone is and everyone is there at the same time every signal scene. The main mcguffin isn't even explained to us in this film so we have no idea why the team is going after it. We just know if the villain gets it "it will be bad". Also, the reason the mcguffin gets into the real world is unknown and the motivation of why the mcguffin gets into the real world is a weird decision by the top bad guy. Seems like they hurt themselves by doing what they did in the beginning of the film. Overall, if this was a little disappointing I wouldn't have disliked at much but this is a really huge step back compared to the last movie which I loved. Every aspect of fallout is better and there's little hype I have for the next one if this is the direction they seem to want to go to. I need to see rogue Nation again, maybe this movie will make me appreciate that movie more. D- Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. MI series has been consistently evolving since its inception. However, this piece fails to show much improvement from the last installment. The characters are corny, and their intention is pretty geared toward the specific intentions of the filmmaker which hinders the character development. Some action scenes are rather long. I admire Mr. Cruise's action scenes but they drag on always ending at predictable outcomes. I am tending towards more of a negative review because it has failed to show much improvement in terms of story-line and cinematography rather than some new 'AI' villain which is hard to understand. The moral of the story is to go off grid and denounce technology because it's been developed to be used as a weapon.

The US empire wants to control this weaponized AI technology to attack other nations.

Absolutely disgusting.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was surprised how many issues I had with Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1 because I really remember liking Fallout quite a bit. It felt like one of the strongest in the series. The reviews for this installment are shockingly good, so I've felt compelled to write something here so that people are aware of some of its many issues.

The first is that the film felt a bit too campy even for them. Everything is a wink to the audience. There is so much corny humor that it undercuts the tension and seriousness of the stakes. I'm not even someone who subscribed to this idea that in the Marvel age of film-making there is too much joking around, but it seems we've finally hit that point. I found myself laughing at times I really shouldn't have either. Not to the extent I did in Jurassic World marveling at how bad some of the writing was, but definitely starting down that same road.

Next, there are multiple unnecessary dialogue lines in the film. I can't remember the specific line but it's from Vingh Rames and made me feel like "yes you don't have to spell it out we get it." The viewer is treated as an idiot. And while we're at it, there is just so much damned exposition in general. Every other scene of dialogue seems to be a context dump where they just stand around telling us the story. Felt like just chaining action sequences together with exposition. What happened to show don't tell?

Then we come to the emotional stakes. Why does Ethan care about Grace at all? He barely knows her. So then why do we care about her? She keeps screwing him over. There is a choice presented to Ethan at one point that he will have to decide who dies, her or his longtime associate Ilsa. Leaving the moral quandary itself aside, why would this be a difficult decision? Then when Grace impersonates Alanna with the mask her eyes are very brown when the the real Alanna clearly has big blue eyes. Is that for our benefit? Is this another example of the film treating the audience like morons? Because otherwise why would her bodyguard not immediately recognize that? It doesn't make sense.

Why are both the the Denlinger (the Director of National Intelligence), and Kittridge on the train? Are they together or separate? Having both of them there confuses the audience while they are trying to understand who is on what side. Is that purposeful then? Also how does this director guy know that only he has the knowledge of where the sub is? And why would he think that’s good leverage to not just be immediately murdered?

That takes us to our villains. Gabriel sucks as some blank canvas zealot for "The Entity." Going back to emotional stakes, they try to shoehorn some backstory flashback in of him murdering a woman Ethan cares for and then it being pinned on him. It feels really lame at this point in the series to just throw this in there and have it be something they expect the audience to just accept and also empathize with. The true villain being "The Entity" just falls flat too. They keep referring to it, and it sounds like they're talking about an alien. Does everything have to be about AI now? The fact that the enemy AI's goals aren't actually known the filmmakers probably thought would be even scarier, but I don't think it totally works when your villain is faceless and also has no clear motivation other than some omnipotent survival.

Obviously I have to give credit for some of the cool action sequences as usual. I wish the big jump hadn't been teased so relentlessly ahead of the film coming out, though, because it also blunts the impact of that sequence. Ethan just smashing through the side of the train car at the perfect moment in the perfect place was the icing on the cake of how not serious this film is. The overuse of CGI for certain action scenes also feels cheap when we have select filmmakers still holding the candle for practical effects. Though I do realize it might be tough to pull off blowing up a bridge and having a train fall off of it with models, real life locations, miniatures, etc.

Lastly a minor gripe I can probably let go of is why do the Russians in the intro have to speak English with an accent and not just have Russian with subtitles? It’s such a short scene too. Maybe this is standard Hollywood fare.

I'll end with saying that after seeing MI: Fallout and then Top Gun I had very high hopes for this film. Top Gun knows what it is and isn't, and it delivered on spectacle and excitement and was an achievement in in filmmaking even if not in writing. But Dead Reckoning Part 1 just feels cheap, cheesy, and ultimately disappointing. The filmmakers before the film started thanked us for coming to see this in the the theaters where it's meant to be seen. But Hollywood needs to deliver for the audience in a more consistent way because only so many of us are going to flush $25 of IMAX ticket down the toilet before we think twice about showing up next time.

The plot is thin, illogical and almost irrelevant (yet somehow split across two movies). There's no character development at all, especially new female characters remain perfectly bland. What fills the movie instead are endless action scenes (one of the car chases alone must be 15 minutes) as well as never ending repetitions of the same pickpocketing gag - to the point where it feels like Groundhog Day.
