This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was surprised how many issues I had with Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1 because I really remember liking Fallout quite a bit. It felt like one of the strongest in the series. The reviews for this installment are shockingly good, so I've felt compelled to write something here so that people are aware of some of its many issues.

The first is that the film felt a bit too campy even for them. Everything is a wink to the audience. There is so much corny humor that it undercuts the tension and seriousness of the stakes. I'm not even someone who subscribed to this idea that in the Marvel age of film-making there is too much joking around, but it seems we've finally hit that point. I found myself laughing at times I really shouldn't have either. Not to the extent I did in Jurassic World marveling at how bad some of the writing was, but definitely starting down that same road.

Next, there are multiple unnecessary dialogue lines in the film. I can't remember the specific line but it's from Vingh Rames and made me feel like "yes you don't have to spell it out we get it." The viewer is treated as an idiot. And while we're at it, there is just so much damned exposition in general. Every other scene of dialogue seems to be a context dump where they just stand around telling us the story. Felt like just chaining action sequences together with exposition. What happened to show don't tell?

Then we come to the emotional stakes. Why does Ethan care about Grace at all? He barely knows her. So then why do we care about her? She keeps screwing him over. There is a choice presented to Ethan at one point that he will have to decide who dies, her or his longtime associate Ilsa. Leaving the moral quandary itself aside, why would this be a difficult decision? Then when Grace impersonates Alanna with the mask her eyes are very brown when the the real Alanna clearly has big blue eyes. Is that for our benefit? Is this another example of the film treating the audience like morons? Because otherwise why would her bodyguard not immediately recognize that? It doesn't make sense.

Why are both the the Denlinger (the Director of National Intelligence), and Kittridge on the train? Are they together or separate? Having both of them there confuses the audience while they are trying to understand who is on what side. Is that purposeful then? Also how does this director guy know that only he has the knowledge of where the sub is? And why would he think that’s good leverage to not just be immediately murdered?

That takes us to our villains. Gabriel sucks as some blank canvas zealot for "The Entity." Going back to emotional stakes, they try to shoehorn some backstory flashback in of him murdering a woman Ethan cares for and then it being pinned on him. It feels really lame at this point in the series to just throw this in there and have it be something they expect the audience to just accept and also empathize with. The true villain being "The Entity" just falls flat too. They keep referring to it, and it sounds like they're talking about an alien. Does everything have to be about AI now? The fact that the enemy AI's goals aren't actually known the filmmakers probably thought would be even scarier, but I don't think it totally works when your villain is faceless and also has no clear motivation other than some omnipotent survival.

Obviously I have to give credit for some of the cool action sequences as usual. I wish the big jump hadn't been teased so relentlessly ahead of the film coming out, though, because it also blunts the impact of that sequence. Ethan just smashing through the side of the train car at the perfect moment in the perfect place was the icing on the cake of how not serious this film is. The overuse of CGI for certain action scenes also feels cheap when we have select filmmakers still holding the candle for practical effects. Though I do realize it might be tough to pull off blowing up a bridge and having a train fall off of it with models, real life locations, miniatures, etc.

Lastly a minor gripe I can probably let go of is why do the Russians in the intro have to speak English with an accent and not just have Russian with subtitles? It’s such a short scene too. Maybe this is standard Hollywood fare.

I'll end with saying that after seeing MI: Fallout and then Top Gun I had very high hopes for this film. Top Gun knows what it is and isn't, and it delivered on spectacle and excitement and was an achievement in in filmmaking even if not in writing. But Dead Reckoning Part 1 just feels cheap, cheesy, and ultimately disappointing. The filmmakers before the film started thanked us for coming to see this in the the theaters where it's meant to be seen. But Hollywood needs to deliver for the audience in a more consistent way because only so many of us are going to flush $25 of IMAX ticket down the toilet before we think twice about showing up next time.

So, admittedly, that consideration was on my mind as I screened the first half of the final installment in this long-running action-adventure franchise. To its credit, director Christopher McQuarrie’s latest has a lot going for it – an intriguing plot with a strong cautionary tale message for us about the potential dangers of AI, an array of superbly staged action sequences, the welcome addition of some much-needed comic relief (something this series has often lacked) and a fine cast of supporting performers (especially the expanded role of Vanessa Kirby, who was woefully underused in the franchise’s previous release). However, with that said, there are some elements that could use improvement. For starters, the picture is simply too long; with a runtime of 2:43:00 (and this is just the first half of the story!), the film is definitely bloated and could stand some judicious editing, especially in the action sequences, several of which begin to try one’s patience after a while. Then there are certain aspects of the narrative that are predictable, formulaic, and, at times, implausible (particularly in the picture’s overlong final act train adventure sequence), qualities that are not as apparent (or at least better hidden) in previous outings. Finally, there are the underwhelming performances of the IMF crew (Tom Cruise, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames). The leader of the pack (Cruise) comes across more like someone whose presence is designed largely to carry the plot rather than serve as a genuine, actively engaged protagonist, and his two colleagues are underused, seemingly playing sidekick roles rather than participating as key characters (unlike previous installments in the series). All told, this is by no means a bad picture, but it could have been better, especially with it being the series finale. It makes me wonder if the full story of “Dead Reckoning” might have been better executed in a single, slightly longer offering than as two separate feature-length releases. That might have solved the issues noted above, and it may have eliminated that nagging “part” problem I wrote about, allowing the picture to stand on its own two feet as a single vehicle. We’ll have to wait another year to see how it all plays out, but I can’t exactly say I’m holding my breath about it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I genuinely don’t understand the early enthusiasm for this film, and I would largely consider myself a fan of the Mission Impossible series even the ones people find questionable like Mission Impossible 2. Moderate but not heavy specific spoilers ahead. The writing and narrative structure is really bizarre . The audience is given information well ahead of the long time protagonist, Ethan Hunt played by Tom Cruise. Therefore outside of the first 30 minutes of the film, there is no mystery for us as audience members. The overwhelming vast majority of the film Ethan is running around trying to find out information we as audience members are given in the first 15 minutes of the film. Then, there is new character of Grace who is present in the majority of the film. I was unable to connect with Grace, and was left scratching my head as to why the IMF was so loyal and willing to put their lives on the line for this thief who complicates their mission at every turn.

When Ethan Hunt is presented with a choice of saving Grace or a returning character, I wanted to shout at the screen for Hunt to save the returning character. If you sympathize and connect with Grace, you’ll probably enjoy this film much more than I did.

The primary antagonist lacks personality by design. Coming off the great performance of Henry Cavill as John Locke, I really struggled to get excited about defeating the faceless villain.

There’s also a new group of characters representing the American governments interest who constantly sabotage the IMF team, but Ethan Hunt is still dedicated to saving these characters. I left this film frustrated with Ethan Hunt as a character. If you’re just going for the action sequences and care very little for the narrative, characters, or structure, I didn’t find anything in this entry to be particularly memorable. This was by no means a terrible film, but it was dreadfully average and by no means a must see film even for fans of the Mission Impossible series. I’m left confused and feeling like the critics saw a different film than I did.

Suspense, thrills and edge-of-your-seat excitement with the right amount of espionage, laughs, dramatic irony, and romance. Hayley Attwell is to die for and plays the damsel-in-distress that is as cunning as a fox and as sexy as could be, perfectly! Her character opposite Cruise adds a degree of realism to the film that is absent in modern cinema. A toughness that is all female but includes the right about of vulnerability that ignites the chemistry between her and Cruise. It simply makes you want a happening conclusion to this tale at any cost. This only adds to the overall intensity of this production. If there is a thing as “de-aging”, then I experienced it, making me feel the magic of cinema that is intoxicating and otherwise devoid in current times. I was a kid again, in awe and in love with all the characters. And on that, every character is superb and played perfectly by the entire cast. Obviously we are coming to the end of this amazing serious… after all, it’s been going on for 30 or so years and with the modern quality of cinematography you can see it in the face of our beloved characters. But don’t let that put you off, Cruise again captivates with his death-defying stunt work which just adds to the gravity of what is at risk… So suspend disbelief just a little longer and have a great time watching this…Now, bring on Part 2… Expand

Ethan Hunt has to find it amid the CIA's power play, multiple parties' double-crosses, new recruit, old agents, etc. It has a somewhat complicated plot, has great action scenes, has parts that are not quite believable and the film can be trimmed by some 15 min.
> Related media: I have seen all other six M:I films. > Negatives: > 1. The plot is quite complicated and may need a second viewing for most. The box office of the first film of the franchise was not as good as was hope due to this reason.
>

2. The film can be trimmed by some 15 min. This can be blamed on the complicated storyline and also by the director letting things run too long, especially the not particularly remember-able car chase scene in the middle. This issue was in the previous film too, also directed by the same person.
>

3. Even by M:I standards, some action scenes are not quite believable.
> Positives:
>

1. The plot is better than that of the last film, M:I 6, which was unrealistic and predictable.
>

2. Most parts of the final action scene are fresh and interesting.

How would the different age groups rate this: > Children: Not rated for children. > Teens: Excellent > Young adults: Excellent > Medium-age adults: Good. > Older adults: Average (cannot follow the plot). > My rating: 4/5 (no half scores). Go watch it in the cinema.

Wow, great movie but with some gripes. The pluses are the great train sequence, the series having more in-depth romance and making the series more ensemble rather than just the 3 IMF agents.

I won't spoil it but the locations are great, the music is well-done and the stunts are thrilling. The new people they brought in that they'll carry forward to part 2 are also interesting. The story is exhilarating but it couldn't be done in 1 movie so you need to watch part 2 when it releases to see how it ends but the film still ends on a high note. There are no perfect movies and this wasn't one either. My gripes are that they kill off a main character which they gave more screen time to in the first half for seemingly no reason which I didn't like. Also the Rome and desert sequences were kinda boring, not bad but not memorable.

Honestly, a good movie, you probably won't be disappointed but the film goes deeper into action rather than spy-thriller so some fans could end up being somewhat disappointed. Go watch it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. MI series has been consistently evolving since its inception. However, this piece fails to show much improvement from the last installment. The characters are corny, and their intention is pretty geared toward the specific intentions of the filmmaker which hinders the character development. Some action scenes are rather long. I admire Mr. Cruise's action scenes but they drag on always ending at predictable outcomes. I am tending towards more of a negative review because it has failed to show much improvement in terms of story-line and cinematography rather than some new 'AI' villain which is hard to understand. HeBranded as the savior of Hollywood by Spielberg himself, Tom Cruise once again puts his star power to the test to create an exceptional action movie, and he has undoubtedly succeeded once again. That's what I truly admire about him. He doesn't attempt to be subtle or adhere to the notion that less is more. The truth is that more is more, and Cruise understands the importance of offering something that truly inspires people, whose motivation to go to the movies has unfortunately been tarnished by the prevalence of streaming.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One may follow the same formula, but what's wrong with that when the spectacle is as invigorating and dynamic? When it's as tense as it is exciting. Cruise and his sidekick Christopher McQuarrie haven't failed to up the ante with each installment, and once again they've delivered one of the best action films in recent years.

Of course, it is necessary to address the flaws. The first one would be the choice of the villain. Does Skynet ring a bell? That felt somewhat weak, to be honest.
The second issue would be the slowdowns that interrupt the excitement of the action sequences. I understand that they are meant to provide some breathing room, but I personally wasn't a fan of them. However, it is important to note that they do not hinder the flow of the narrative. This movie has a runtime of 163 minutes, and I can honestly say that I have seen 90-minute films that felt much longer. So believe me, time flies in here.

The third negative aspect to address would be the construction of the cliffhanger. While the events leading up to it are impressive, I must say the script lacks the necessary sense of urgency to effectively resolve the conflict heading into part two and that is a problem that's tied with the damn poor villain. As for the rest, it is pure entertainment bliss. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One delivers on its grand scale, and the spectacle benefits from it in every way.
I had a great time watching it and left the theater more than satisfied. These are two essential elements that any blockbuster must strive for and accomplish.

If you have the opportunity to see it in IMAX, I highly recommend you choose that option.

The film brings atmospheric settings, good actors and a serious approach of deceive and the art of outsmarting each other. A fantastic movie! Expand

This is a very engaging film to watch; Dead Reckoning is simply a good time at the movies.

The biggest gripe I have is that it's just goofy. It feels like the plot to a bad superhero movie or the plot to a spinoff ff film. The villains, yes villains without spoiling anything, were not only lackluster but goofy to then point where I questioned if I was in a MI movie and not an Austin powers one. The main motivations of one of the bad guys isn't clear as he works for the other one. He has tech in the film, especially involving a casket, where I laughed a little when I saw it. Looked like something out of a B level superhero film. The direction they went with the main top level bad guy is a direction I just don't like. It makes the stakes feel higher but they honestly never do anything that special with it. This concept has been done before and way better in those other fimms. To a point, where I thought for sure they would going to utilize it way better and way more menacing but everytime they dropped the ball. Even though I don't like the direction they're going I can see the potential it can bring but hopefully they do a better job with it in the next one. Now, let's talk about the charcters. Ethan Hunt feels like he's regressed in the film and not in a natural way. I know he's running up against the biggest threat but this film feels like he's not even running his own movie anymore. Cruise is still good in the film but the film feels like just one big chase sequence stretched out for no reason. Plenty of times Ethan could have been killed and would have been beneficial for the top bad guy to do so and could probably get him killed but they never do. Hunt just feels like a dude along for the ride going from place to place while being spoon fed information. The second character I had the biggest problem with is a newcomer and how they introduce her to the team. Without spoiling anything, she basically makes Hunt look like a fool the whole movie and makes Hunt look like a side charcter in his own movie. She's without a doubt the most annoying charcter in the film with tropes molded to create her charcter. She's a walking cliche for most of the film and gets out of scenarios she shouldn't. They even say she's not a spy the whole movie but can invade the spies at every turn. It's both a joke and sad that she is in the film (especially because the outcome of her charcter does something to another better charcter). Luckily the rest of the charcters on the main team are great here. The only other charcters that kind of suck are the two high generals. Felt like cliche trope "spy authority figures". The main villains aren't good but the actor does a fine enough job. No actor does a bad job for what they are given. Now to the most disappointing aspect being the stunts. The marketing for this film had "most dangerous" stunts but just never felt thay way. A lot of them are cool but are blown out of the water in comparison to the water scene from rogue Nation and almost all of the stunts from fallout. If they really were that dangerous, that's awesome, but it didn't translate to the screen. Felt a lot more bad green screen stunts more than the ones we got in rhe past two films. Not one stunt in this one was cooler than those other two films and that's a let down. Also, the action sequences didn't hit as hard as the bathroom scene in fallout or even the knife fight scene in RN. A lot of bad shaky cam and a lot of cuts. The story doesn't help here either. It's literally one big scavenger hunt with a side plot of also being one big chase sequence. Everyone knows where everyone is and everyone is there at the same time every signal scene. The main mcguffin isn't even explained to us in this film so we have no idea why the team is going after it. We just know if the villain gets it "it will be bad". Also, the reason the mcguffin gets into the real world is unknown and the motivation of why the mcguffin gets into the real world is a weird decision by the top bad guy. Seems like they hurt themselves by doing what they did in the beginning of the film. Overall, if this was a little disappointing I wouldn't have disliked at much but this is a really huge step back compared to the last movie which I loved. Every aspect of fallout is better and there's little hype I have for the next one if this is the direction they seem to want to go to. I need to see rogue Nation again, maybe this movie will make me appreciate that movie more. D- Expand

The cast is perfectly assembled and the acting, framing, and score are working together in full harmony. Maybe the best of the MI scores to date. You really do not feel the longer runtime at all here, perfect pacing.

An AI villain is the perfect capstone for Ethan and the MI franchise and it lends itself well here, even if the phrase "The Entity" is mentioned a couple (hundred) times too many.

The opening 30 minutes are pretty choppy in terms of writing and exposition. The movie stutters every time Cary Elwes is on screen for a prolonged info dump. The action is a little bit of a step down from prior entries but the train escape sequence is one of the franchises best, and the motorcycle base jump was incredible, even if a little too short.

Once again the MI casting team did an incredible job, Atwell, Morales, Klementieff and Whigham are natural fits for the franchise, with Atwell shining through with a true star performance as the de facto second lead.

Definitely the funniest of the last couple installments, with several intentional comedic moments and gags worked throughout.

Need to watch this again without to weight of my Fallout based expectations.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tom cruise has made one of the best action movie of all time, maybe is slightly under fallout, but this time the action was top notch. Only thing i didn’t like was How they handled the Death of Ilsa, they (the characters) weren’t as much shocked as i was. Overall great movie! Expand

Summertime is the time to escape. There is no better way to do it than at the movies. And there is no better movie than "Mission Impossible_Dead Reckoning." The stunts are as imaginative as anything we've ever seen.

this is not just the movie of the summer but the movie of the year, breathtaking action scenes, lovable supporting characters, Mq Carrie remains a great director and Tom Cruise remains the biggest movie star we have.

Tom Cruise ensures that you get every pence worth of entertainment throughout the runtime of the film, which never feels like 2h50 mins as it cruises (pun intended) through, in what is the boldest installment in the franchise.

Lets get the negatives out of the way : first on list is the story, which is the simplest and most predictable in any MI movie. Story-wise, its nothing you haven't seen before and the abnormal amount of expository dialogues did get on my nerves.

But where the script thrives is creating unique, thrilling situations for the charecters where they are forced to choose between moral dillemas, and the drama surrounding it leaves you at the edge of your seat.

Talking about the edge of your seat, make sure its comfortable as you will find yourself revisiting it in all of the jaw-dropping, mind-blowing, spectacular, thrilling, awesome-ing ??!? ( I am running out of adjectives here) action sequences. The action in this movie is a work of art and you should watch it in the biggest screen possible. The ending could have been executed better, but I will give it the benefit of doubt as this is part 1 of 2 movies.

Unlike FastAfter a slew of gargantuan, but ultimately disappointing blockbusters, Tom Cruise is back to school them on how to do it right. Budgeted at almost $300 million dollars, it is one of the most expensive, and ambitious mission yet. Unlike Fast X or Dial of Destiny, you literally can see every dollar that was spend on the film. The set pieces are bigger, and more dangerous than ever, knowing that Cruise himself literally is doing his own stunts. At almost 3 hours, you would expect this film to be a slog, but no. It moves at a breakneck pace, and after 6 missions, Cruise and co has perfected this formula to such degree that it is almost an art form. Enough said. See this in IMAX. Expand
