It is a biographical compilation of interviews, flashbacks, studio footage, home videos, cellphone videos and concert recordings that cover a number of events in Swift's life and career, including the making of her sixth and seventh studio albums, Reputation (2017) and Lover (2019), her past battle with body dysmorphia and allied eating disorder, her mother's cancer diagnosis, the toxic internet culture and media scrutiny she faces, her sexual assault trial, and her decision to go public with her political views.

Netflix described the film as a "raw and emotionally revealing look" at Swift "during a transformational period in her life as she learns to embrace her role not only as a songwriter and performer, but as a woman harnessing the full power of her voice".

She managed to rise from the battles life put her through and made it through the same vehicle that made her happy when she was a little girl: music. By letting us into her mind, Taylor Swift opens the conversation for what it's like to be a woman in the modern music industry. Even as one of the most successful female artists, the benefits come with devastating punishments. Miss AmericanaBy letting us into her mind, Taylor Swift opens the conversation for what it's like to be a woman in the modern music industry. Even as one of the most successful female artists, the benefits come with devastating punishments. Miss Americana depicts Swift's adult awakening in documentary form. It's a heartbreaking story of a girl who was forced to grow up too fast, who never learned the concept of self-validation. How because of the need for applause, she was letting herself be controlled, consequently silencing her voice. She was created into America's Sweet Heart, but not into the woman she wants to be. And when the applause fades, the silence is deafening. It gives insight to what it was like when the cheers turned into snake emojis, what it's like when millions of people are saying things about you when they don't know your character, and how that can make you feel like maybe what they say is true. Then, it's a self discovery. Rejecting a belief system that was built to tear you down. Taking back the crown and the control of the narrative. Truly inspiring.

Of course, it's Taylor's first documentary so it's not flawless. With that being said, it's they best movie I've seen come from a pop-star to date.

It felt naturalMiss Americana gives us our biggest unfiltered look of Taylor Swift yet. It was amazing to see her go from a twangy girl from Pennsylvania trying to make it big to an intelligent icon that won't back down from taking a stance. It felt natural and personal. Some documentaries come off forced and fake while this one feels like Taylor living her everyday life with a camera following her. Some clips seemed a little too jumbled and short but overall it was an amazing film. I only wish that she would've made it a little bit longer, she could've easily had made this 2 hours long if she gave all of the elements in this film more time. Also, Only The Young the song that plays over the credits is very good and is something that will stay on your playlist for quite awhile. Expand

In some part my 'pre-judgment' of Swift's image was not completely wrong, I always saw it as 'forced' in the way of behaving before the media. And in fact - as shown in the documentary itself - she presented herself as a new persona to be liked by the public. I completely understand that the breaking of the mold of 'perfect girl' in pop culture does not happen in the same way for everyone and if it came to Taylor after all these years, I cannot judge her for that. Maybe my contact with other artists who left that label at an younger age, like Britney, X-tina, Miley Cyrus and all the pop girls who already rebelled, made me demand from celebrities like Taylor, a position long before. So, I was a bit back on her. It is always good to see the artist mature and recognize that pop has its strands and each one approaches themes differently. Glad she met and is finally doing what she wants. Expand

Taylor is the main interview subject and she’s all over. So don’t expect a warts and all sort of thing. In fact, it slides right on over the criticisms against her – we all know the joke of series of boyfriends (no shame; as any person is apt to date a bunch of people in their lives) and others. Swift mostly comes out alright – it shines on a light on her life and balancing living and fame and how cognacent she is on all things. I believe she’s an honest, good person; a very intelligent woman and a hell of a song writer. It does get a bit self-congratulation when it comes to her political stance and voicing her opinion in 2018. She should voice her thoughts – she has a platform and it should be used. But there is a heck of a lot of patting herself on the back. But yes, this was an enjoyable doc and I learned insight on her, although filtered through her. Expand

This documentary was"Miss Americana" is a very interesting journey into the mind of a little woman that lives for the approval of other people. Being this a struggle for my persona for many years, I could see myself reflected in her eyes. This documentary was necessary for everybody who has ever been a hater of hers because others, from the media to the people around you, forced you to. The title reflects how the singer was the image of the abstract American dream concept: a sweet innocent girl turned into a mega star that will always be submissive. It shows you how she has always cared for the charts and specially for Grammy Awards which are progressively being exposed as a house full of signed counterfoils by labels who want to increase their earnings and reputation by adding "Grammy-winning artist" to their subordinate's biography.
In conclusion, the documentary shows the growth of Swift from subordinate to an independent woman able to think for herself, have self-confidence and do projects for her own salvation instead of satisfying the Grammy Award committee. I love this new Taylor.

It has two very distinct parts which are made up of two types of scenes. The first type of scene is pretty much just a behind the scenes clip, honestly, this was the parts I enjoyed the most, even though I’m not a fan and didn’t know most of the songs in it, it was kind of cool watching these things come together. The second type of scene is everything else, and this is where the problems start to come out. It hits every note it wants to hit and does everything it’s expected to do, but nothing more. The entire thing comes off as formulaic, like if a computer was asked to make a Taylor Swift documentary. It’s good, I couldn’t find many things outright wrong with it, it’s just that it feels soulless. But there are some real flaws in the film. It, whether intentionally or not, is divided into two parts. In the first, Taylor rises to fame only to have her reputation tarnished by a scandal involving Kanye West. In the second, she must gain the courage to speak up against things she knows is wrong at the potential cost of her career. It isn’t necessarily bad that these are the plots, it’s just that the filmmaker ties the first part up in a nice bow, and then moves on to the second one, rather than having them flow. It gives the appearance of being a 6 act film which really makes it drag around the middle, since it lost its momentum ending the first part. It doesn’t help these two parts have very different themes, the first being about fame and the second about cultural issues, this makes the parts even more separate. Some foreshadowing of the cultural themes could have eliminated this problem. And my final point, Miss Americana would be better as a movie, with actors. A documentary has limitations that stops this one from telling the story it wants to tell. I could point out multiple points in the film where a film could have done it infinitely better. I recommend Miss Americana for any fans of Taylor Swift, but there’s not much there to keep someone who doesn’t like her music engaged. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Its hard to fully express my feelings on this documentary, but I will try my best. This documentary starts well, transitions from topics poorly and ends very boorish. I came into this documentary assuming this would give me an inside look into the mind of the immensely talented Taylor Swift, what I felt I got was a basic Wikipedia or Fandom backstory, a list of "supposed" doubters and haters, and a political dog and pony show for her fans of legal voting age to immediately side with and not conduct research on. I'm not saying she cant have this chip on her shoulder, but to an outsider of her fan-base it doesn't justify the need for one and the documentary highlights that fact. I did appreciate her opening up about the sexual assault case and how her emotions felt during that time. However, that was pretty much the only decent part of said documentary. I think the way at the end she felt she was free in a way to express her political beliefs is a hard to believe since she voted twice and was obviously aware of the political landscape during both President Obama's and President Trumps terms. I think if anything this documentary is great for her fans. For non fans or critics of her work it would only add fuel towards their antipathy of her brand and image. If I were to improve this project I would have shortened the amount time given to backstory, allowed more of technical look a the concerts and fan meet and greets, explore the assault case(best part of the entire doc really showed her strength), and explore the critiques of herself and allow her to truthfully address them. This shows how much disconnect Hollywood has with the real world.
Once a person hit the fame bell, surrounded by all different kinda people (managers, CEO's,...) that maniupulate you into not knowing any better you get this kinda situations.

I'm sorry, this showed just how shallow and immature she is through this documentary.
She has millions to billions of supporters and fans but she still isn't satisfied? She demands more?

A love letter to privilege and supremacy. The editing fails to compensate for the terrible acting and predictable script. One really wants to root for Ms Swift, but she makes it impossible.

She is 30 years old, far too old to be looking for everyone’s approval. She looks desperate trying to make “better” albums to win some awards. If she seriously thought Lover was a better project then Reputation then she is obviously delusional. I’m tired of the white privilege and mediocrity. Expand

Miss White Americana indeed. She is the definition of white previlige in America. To think rePUTAtion will win awards and Lover a better record when you have ME!?? She is so fake and manufactured.

She just joined the current media trends like a good puppet. Trying to act genuine the whole movie was weird as hell. I can't even rate a 1 since it just was lies start to end. Just a huge PR stunt slammed into a "documentary." I'm glad her white privilege has worked so well for her. Great job not talking about that at all. But wait "she's so woke." Expand

Lana Wilson's doc is engineered to appease her fans and promote Swift's self-awareness, and yet it leaves one feeling that there is still so much more to be discussed about what makes Taylor Swift who she is.
