The Minions pretty much had their moments. Good, but a bit bad at the same time. It's pretty much one of the watchable movies (Along with Despicable Me and 2) to stay in tune for Despicable Me 3 coming on your way.

Minions is a disappointing prequel to the good Despicable Me films. The backstory part of the film is great, but the rest is just forgettable. Fortunately, the animation, set in the 1960s, is pretty good. Unfortunately, the plot is not good with uninteresting characters. In fact, this film is titled Minions, but it only focuses on three Minions. Also, the humor starts to get annoying this time around. I was disappointed with this prequel and Minions proves that the Despicable Me series has overstayed its welcome. Expand

The animation is very good and the soundtrack is wonderfully interjected with some classic 60’s songs. Also for the adult movie buffs in the audience there are plenty of references to other films one of which, if I’m not mistaken, is a homage to ‘The creature from the Black Lagoon’? The villain here voiced by Sandra Bullock is the aptly titled Scarlet Overkill. However, the character lacks the sinister villainy of Despicable Me’s ‘Gru’. I don’t wish to be too harsh on the film because there are some truly inspired moments. The early narrated scenes depicting the Minions in search of the greatest villain they can find is a lot of fun as are the scenes at the Tower of London. Unfortunately, though, not being a true Minion convert I watched proceedings rather impassively laughing at only a couple of inspired sight gags. Ultimately, one is left to conclude that this is a film for children or diehard fans only. Expand

The problem isI was never a big fan of Despicable Me (haven't seen the second one) but Minions turning out so mediocre still disappointed me because the trailer promised a fun film that seemed to be a lot better than what we ended up having. The problem is a lack of engaging story-line, there were no real stakes to it.

At the start of the film I was fairly amused but by middle I felt bored. If there had been another protagonist to focus on maybe that would have made things better. Like say a character who can actually speak English and who we could root for because the Minions alone can't carry this film. It's now abundantly clear that they belong in the background.

Also there was nothing special about Scarlet Overkill. Gru at least was a distinctive character whereas Scarlet was the Strong Independent Woman that we have seen a million times before. So the film also failed in having a memorable villain.

So basically if you are an adult and you still have retained your love for animated films then there is nothing for you here. It has a few fun bits here and there but nothing to recommend it for.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I love the minions. Somewhat ironically, but almost nostalgically. Although Despicable Me came out only about 5 years ago, but Universal wastes no time with Minions. Give the people what they want! (Although I'm not sure this is quite what the people want. I didn't need to see a minion in a thong.)

Centuries of young minion life has been shortened to a mere 90 minutes. We saw the best and the worst times, but still there was no real plot to speak of. The minions are funny (to a certain extent) and the movie did what one should expect it to do – have many banana-crazy minions running around every which way. That's what it does best and that's what I wish it would have focused on. Without a clear destination or point to the story, I was as lost as Bob and Stuart and Kevin were while trying to find their new supervillain.

I didn't like Scarlet Overkill. I probably wasn't supposed to either, but that doesn't change the fact that she was an unreliable and one-dimensional character. I wanted to see the real Scarlet, not the power-hungry queen. Or maybe even see the minions stand up for themselves! I was disappointed with the story past their despair ice caves. I would have rather watched the minions in that cave for 90 minutes than watch the lifeless action sequence with the oddball villains that seemed strikingly out of place.

Being a third sequel, I never had high expectations. This isn't Toy Story, and you're not going to cry. You'll laugh a couple times, cringe a few more, and walk out of the theater with a shrug. I wish I could have as much as enthusiasm as Bob did, but that is completely unrealistic.

But this film ticked most of the boxes needed for a good animation film. To start negatively, this film was rushed as f*ck. Honestly, scarlet overkill had just the worst build up to an antagonist I've ever seen in a movie. It was so quick and should've started with a little more context. Also, the action sequences were too rushed and should've had a more quick slapstick humour to them (i'm not saying they didn'y, but more would be nice). This being said, the comedy in this movie was exemplary as the minions are just too adorable in trying to understand a foreign world to them. The references to British pop culture in the 60's/70's were on point and added great comedic value to a film that means both children and adults will enjoy. Not the worst, but really not the best animated film out there. Expand

Their occasionally intelligible jibberish never gets old and the silly slapstick always generates a smile, if not a laff. Three of them set out to find a new evil boss, only to get sidetracked with a plot to save the world. Most of the action is set in '60s London and the swinging period soundtrack adds upbeat nostalgic fun. While some of the gags are genuinely funny (and there are plenty of in-jokes for the grownups), the story wears thin and an endless energy makes up for true hilarity. Still, less discriminating younger viewers are bound to be delighted. NOTE: Stay thru the credits for a Beatles song featuring the entire cast. Expand

Honestly the real and main reason why the studio (Universal) decided to make this movie at all is because how popular Minions is , they just everywhere know from toys to even some ride in Universal Amusement Park.

For me personally i'm okay with that , i mean i'm a big fan of these little yellow guy since the first Despicable Me in 2010 but overall i have to say that Minions is not a bad movie but it's also could be a lot better especially comparison to the first two Despicable Me that a lot better than this

first off the script it's horrible super cookie cutter cliche boring script that you pretty much getting tired of it , it's super predictable , lack imagination or any real story driven it's like they just search "how to write a movie script" in google and just do it exactly that.

Another thing that kind a let me down is the other main character in this movie besides minions and that is Scarlett Overkill voice by Sandra Bullock , she's awful really just another cookie cutter part of this movie , the character itself is boring repetitive predictable and not even likable at all she's just doing her bad stuff without any real background to it even though they try to force her terrible background in to our mouth but it's just terrible storytelling.

BUT but even though a lot of part in this movie is a let down , one thing that Minions fans should at least feel safe going into this movie is for sure the minions itself ,they're still cute funny and likable character the same character we know and love from the previous Despicable Me , so if you going to this movie just for this reason and you're a big minions fan there's no reason why you should not see this movie but other than that it's just another cliche mediocre movie that pass the test but never at the top of the class.

Minions is the prequel film that explains how the Minions came to be and how they met their master, Gru. Being a fan of the first 2 Despicable Me films, I was very hopeful that this would be good, but also very scared, because honestly, there's not enough substance to carry a whole film. Overall, it's not as good as the films before it, but it is still a nice addition to the franchise. I thought hearing just the minions for an hour and a half would get very tiresome, but they managed to make it work by adding human characters, while still keeping focus on the Minions. In this film we have an all-star cast that ranges from Sandra Bullock to Geoffrey Rush and Micheal Keaton. They all did a fine job at the rules they were given. I do have a few complaints with the film. It does seem to drag on a little bit but still manages to pick itself back up by the finale. A lot of the jokes were pointed towards kids, even more so than both Despicable Me, but the best jokes are the ones that kids may not get. There is a ton of references to 60's culture, and it's pretty cool to see something for the adults to enjoy. My biggest problem is that the story is really all over the place, It can't really stay focused on one thing for more than 10 minutes, and it gets a bit distracting. Overall, with a killer soundtrack and a ton of humor kids and adults will enjoy, even with the crumby story and a few flat jokes, Minions is still an enjoyable animated film, just not the best one this year. I thought they were hilarious. However, I thought they worked well as side characters, I didn't think they would be able to hold their own film. I still hold that opinion. Although the first two films were for families to enjoy, this one is for children. Your kids will laugh their faces off at this, but I don't think its as enjoyable for the parents. Sandra Bullock wasn't the greatest as the main antagonist, however Jon Hamm was a highlight in the film. I found him very entertaining in the role that he played, and he was the funniest thing in this movie. The main (Minion) characters, Stuart, Kevin and Bob were very entertaining, but most of it was slapstick humour you'll find funny the first time you watch it, probably not the next million times your kids chuck the DVD on (Kind of like the first Cars). I'll give the film credit, as its just a bit of harmless fun for the kids, but its not a great film in general. My final thoughts on this film are: Your kids will love it, but try to avoid buying it on DVD when it comes out, and avoid millions of viewings! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I love the minions. They are so funny, adorable and bumbling. I love their odd language and the way they resort to violence when annoyed. So, me and my friends went to see the minions movie. I barley laughed once. It had n over the top villain, a messy story and the funniest parts are the short sequence at the beginning and the five seconds with young Gru at the end. This was miles away from the quality of Despicable Me 1 and 2. Expand

As great as Gru was, not a single kid or adult left cinemas without at some point going "Bannana!" So it makes sense that they should end up getting a movie all of their own, that still has the same great animation and visual gags that made the franchise enjoyable to begin with.

It starts out giving a brief back-story for the history of the minions. Turns out the minions have been around since the dawn of time, always following the most evil bosses they can find. But their masters don't seem to last long as the minions end up accidentally causing the downfall of everyone of them, from Genghis Khan to Dracula. After hiding out for several years (leaving them oddly absent from having to work for the likes of Hitler or Stalin), 3 of the pint sized ducklings (Kevin, Stuart and Bob) go off to America in search of a new master in the 60's. Thus they go on an adventure, finding a new master called Scarlett Overkill, stealing a crown and accidentally taking over England.

The plot never actually takes any form, never remaining focused for long with the small yellow blobs getting distracted by every passing thing. But with the slapstick and chaos of the minions you don't really need one. It's less of a story and more of a series of sketches for the minions to put them into different situations going from hanging out with a family of bank robbers to being stepped on by the Beatles in Abbey Road.

An unexpected joy of this film ends up being the soundtrack. Not just because of the great Minion renditions (it starts off on a particular high note with the minions singing the 20th Century Fox theme), but also just a great selection of classic 60's tracks that should fill parents with nostalgia and introduce kids to some classic tracks.

However the film does have one key problem, which is there's too much from the minions. Their slapstick is funny, but it's not enough to carry the film for an hour and a half on it's own and ends up feeling worn out towards the end. The Despicable Me films mixed in Gru's brand of humour where he played the victim, that stopped the minions slapstick from becoming repetitive. It's also lacking the same emotional core that a character like Gru brought to Despicable Me, with his bittersweet story of a man becoming a father being far more engaging than a crazed villain wanting to own a crown.

But whilst the minions work much better as side characters, this spin off never feels like a misfire. It still has enough humour to be fun for the family, but just lacks the same level of rewatchability as previous films of the franchise.

I was wrong. Minions serves as a spinoff/prequel to Despicable Me and I did find a few things interesting at the beginning of the movie that had the Minions interfering with some of the most important moments and oddities in the worlds history but it quickly feels like it is running in circles over and over until the end of the movie. This movie has practically 0 heart and 0 development. The Minions just spend the whole movie running around causing mischief and ruining things and they are not nearly as funny as they were in the first two Despicable Me movies. The side characters needed to be good in this movie as well because the Minions obviously don't speak English and this were forgettable throughout. Its just an overall disappointing film that could have been so much better. Expand

However, the funniest thingAs a person that thought that liked the first two Despicable Me movies a lot, I thought it had something special about them. It had the villain named Gru who had a special love and care for the three orphan girls. However, the funniest thing about the movie was the minions that bring a lot of laughs that come in small doses. Now, the directors of Despicable Me take the minions into the lead role in their own movie and the result is a fun, uneven movie set in the 60’s.

Before Gru, the Minions were looking for a villain. They tried and failed so many times with a different villain. Now, the three minions under the names of Kevin, Stuart, and Bob must find a new villain where they face a lot of obstacles in their way.

The First act was clever and superbly written as it shows life of the yellow creatures from the beginning of time to the 1900’s with a cunning voice by Geoffrey Rush as the narrator. The second act got a bit more routine after they introduced Scarlet Overkill and set foot in London. The third act, however, got very out of control as too many things were all at once.

Pierre Coffin does the voices for the minions which gave me all the laughs I could get and probably could. Scarlet Overkill’s character (Sandra Bullock), however, was tediously developed although Sandra did a good job of voicing her. I don’t want to spoil the rest of the cast but Scarlet’s husband (Joe Hamm) was cunning and witty as Hamm does a wonderful voiceover by him. The rest, however, are a mixed bag.

While the animation isn’t as good as Inside Out, Illumination Studios still does a great job of lighting everything and make great use of the textures. One fine example of this was Scarlet Overkill. When they showed her at the Villain-Con, her hair was bright and her dress was sleek. That was some of the best animation Illumination has ever done along with the water. There was also a mid-film bedtime story where the stop motion was so-so. The best animation was at the beginning where it was superbly hand-drawn where it showed the minions that were under the sea.

While I laughed a lot at the minions from the beginning, I also fell half asleep as the movie continued on when they were at London. I just felt like they were too much for those yellow dudes. It almost felt like they completely run out of energy by the end of the movie. Another thing is that when there was two moments when some people were just in their underwear, it completely offended me and I had to look away. I think that they were preparing kids for PG-13/R rated movies. However, the beginning and the end were the best parts. What made the beginning and the end so fun was that it was clearly narrated and in the end, they introduced young Gru.

Honestly, the selection of 60’s songs were a nice return being a fan of 60’s music. That means that they have tracks from The Kinks, The Who, and The Beatles and most of the 60’s songs work well on scenes especially the chaos for queen’s crown works out very well with the song of “You Really Got Me”.

All in all, I thought Minions didn’t reach the efforts of the Despicable Me movies. While Minions has laughter, colorful animation, some nice characters and song selections. Minions also has an uneven plot, some undeveloped characters, and things that may offend caring moms. To have a full satisfying experience, watch the end credits where you will get laughs with the minions and Gru. Call me a Gru fan but I really liked it more when the minions were with Gru the villain.

Expectations were high but movies was not.

Upon seeing the trailer I was very eager to experience the movie but it was a disappointment. These yellow creatures were expected to create hell lot of comedy and stomach aching laughter which seemed to be missing, except a single scene.
Most of the comic scenes to be laughed upon were already showed in the trailer so if you have watched all the trailer you must not waste money for buying the ticket.

The basic story-line was told in the trailer only and the adorable gibberish of minions became a reason of irritation in some scenes. As far as narration is considered it is what they have shown in the movie, so no narration in the whole movie which makes some scenes confusing.

Though the movie had several witty comic scenes but none were that appalling to have made the viewer ROFL, even children didn’t displayed much excited response.

As I said earlier the story-line was a disappointment though the movie started off very well and it was expected to be something different but all our hopes were shattered when the movie became a tail of bedtime story which has a villain that manipulate the heroes to get their work done and then betrays them.

The animation was way too awesome and was one of the best things about the movie. Also the 3-D was really appreciable.
On comparing with Despicable Me series Minion has no stand. In this movie there was a lack of Gru who would complement the minions or it could be other way around.

So basically if you are a minion fan than you may find the movie awesome but if you are a Despicable Me fan than you won’t have that big smile on your face when you’ll be retreating the theaters.

Funny movie, but I thought it was kind of dumb. The minions did make me laugh a lot but the movie itself I just didn't like that much.

A short hour and a half of the Minions that will mildly entertain you. While Illumination nails the visual elements in the film and the Minions don’t make you sick of them it definitely doesn’t lack the punch of the first film. The film is so focused on firing rapid fire jokes that it forgets to provide some heart. While some of the jokes work some just provide a mild chuckle and without that umph that the first film had this can’t help but feeling like a candy bar. Lot of sugar but low on energy. That’s because it is. The film is just an hour and a half of the Minions walking around talking to each other. For die-fans of the franchise this will be all they want/need. For everyone else though the film is kind of cute. The Minions are funny but they cannot sustain a whole movie on their own. Without a character like Gru to ground the film and occasionally cut to the Minions for bursts of laughter the film can’t help but feel hollow. Its mildly entertaining but unlike Shaun the Sheep, another spin-off film with side characters that speak gibberish, there is nothing to sing home about good for one viewing but that’s about it. Overall:
Another example of why mascot characters should not be given their own movie. Minions is good for a few giggles, but don't expect too much from it.

Minions, an obvious cash grab from Illumination Entertainment does what it is set out to do, entertain little kids and make billions of dollars in the process.

Shame on you - whoever is responsible for this stupid movie. Lot of scenes that only adult people can understand, but overall its SO MUCH BORING movie for adult people. I think only kids 5-10 y.o. can enjoy by watching this movie.

Ultimately, this movie has an okay first half, but a really good second half. Ultimately, it doesn't make up for most of the film being a bit of a slog with only occasional actually funny attempts at humor. I think this movie made the minions definitely wear out their welcome -- it proves that a film can't not be carried by the Despicable Me side characters that are much more enjoyed in moderation. Let's just say you won't finish this movie thinking it was an absolutely necessary addition to the series. Expand

It was a fun movie, I don't rate it that high because I'm not as big of a fan of minions as some other people are and maybe the fact that I haven't seen Despicable me doesn't help either, but if you seen that movie you might like this more than me

Some good some really good and some bad. This one is just OK. Like the peanuts movies this one is manly amid at kids. The peanuts movie accomplished something that the minions could not. Being an entertaining movie for both kids and adults alike. The peanuts had references from the old charlie brown movies wile being a short sweet and fun movie with top notch voice acting. That is another review though . Back to minions. This movie was just OK. Yeah it was entertaining at some spots but i feel the script didn't have much to work with and neither did scarlet overkill. She sounds like a cool villain but she just did not deliver. Expand

Una precuela de Mi Villano Favorito es bastante innecesaria, es decir cuenta los orígenes y es interesante y tal pero demasiada profundidad para una película de niños.

Instead, they got the screenwriter of the Despicable Me theme park ride. Expand

I was not happy with this movie. It started out good but got more boring as it went on. It didn't have humor in it as much as Despicible Me did, which is sad because that is what made the minions awesome. All in all, it wasn't great.

Fun characters and movie, but... It was kind of off-putting.

The film features Despicable Me's popular character, the Minions. The film is supposed to be a prequel, but it is mostly a British satire, and for a PG-rated comedy, there are a lot of black jokes. Some of the gags are funny, but many of them are juvenile. If you think the film is funny, you will be offended by such gags. The dancing of the guards is disgusting. The uncle's naked dancing is more offensive than funny.

I was not satisfied with this kind of storyline to begin with. The story is too childish and sketchy about going to a bad guy party and serving the most powerful bad guy. Couldn't they have come up with a better theme or script? The characters are adorable.

If parents and children saw this movie together, the children would be immediately attracted to the characters and would say it was interesting. But the parents don't take it very seriously. They are not interested in black jokes and a script that could be improved.
