The four leads are all very funny, but there is a seemingly endless list of very funny supporting actors which really make the film. The dude from Veep (groom), the cousin, the guy from Silicon Valley (masseur) are all amazing in this film. And I'll say it - Zac Efron is a funny dude. He was solid in Dirty Grandpa, and he 's a solid leading actor here. Expand

They were all funny and worked well together. The romance between Efron and Kendrick and the attempted romance between Devine and Plaza were what made the movie as funny as it was. At some points during the movie, the jokes were over the top, but never too much. They usually found there way back around and it became more realistic. This is not a movie necessarily with a good plot, but it does provide viewers with a good laugh and some funny, raunchy comedy. If you're looking to sit back, relax, laugh, and not worry about thinking for awhile, I would recommend Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Efron and Levine are hilarious together and for some reason they made me think of younger versions of Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly from step brothers with a sprinkle of RickyBobby/Cal from Talladega nights. Aubrey Plaza and Anna Kendrick are just as off kilter as those two, with a little bit of the wedding crashers mixed in. Plaza had fantastic comedic timing and was just all around hilarious. The support actors (playing family members, friends, resort staff) and comedians were all fantastic and some of the scenes and lines were just balls out funny. I think there was only one character that I thought was out of place (the cousin with some funny zingers) and I felt like Kendrick, while a good compliment to her costars for most of the film she was put in situations that have been done in other films but much better (if you're going to do a person being "inappropriately high at the wrong time" scene, it can't be subpar when cheech and chong, will Ferrell, martin, dave Chappelle, channing tatum and Michael Cera among others have done it way better. So it was like they threw in a situation or two that didn't really work (it didn't detract from the movie, but I think they could've did it a little bit better or just left it out). This film is funny and is good for those who aren't really into the overly gratuitous Sacha Baron Cohen film but still want something closer to college humor. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Surprisingly funny!

I wasn't terribly excited for the comedy of this film, simply because the trailers seemed to splice scenes at awkward moments - but I was laughing hysterically for nearly the whole film! The relationship between the four leads was both funny and heartwarming, and while the comedy took a crude turn at times, it never stretched reality so far that I was taken out of the moment. Sidenote - the girl who plays "little Genie" absolutely blew me away with her performance! Very unexpected! Overall the film was nicely cast, save for a few roles that required very specific looks. Great suspense and soundtrack, great location, and great costuming!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Laugh-out-loud funny from beginning to end.

Based on the poor reviews the movie had on Xfinity, I had pretty low expectations going in - figured it would be crude, unfunny, but sort of a light way to pass an hour and a half. Boy was I wrong. It was hysterical! From beginning to end, I laughed hysterically. I loved the writing, the jokes and the overall intelligence behind the plot.

The basic premise is that these two brothers are screwups, and their father is making them calm down and get dates so they don't mess up their sister's wedding. But unfortunately...that plan goes way wrong when the girls they bring are even wilder, and crazier, than them.

So funny, really lightened up the weekend. I highly recommended to all comedy fans.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Funny and surprisingly full of enough real emotion to make it more than just another carbon copy comedy. "Over the years of our family gatherings, you two show up and you ruin it. I want you to bring a date to your sisters wedding." Mike (Devine) and Dave (Efron) have a bad history of partying too hard and family functions and causing things to go terrible. They make a promise to their sister to find respectable girls to bring and be on their best behavior. They meet Alice (Kendrick) and Tatiana (Plaza) and think they found the perfect dates, but the girls aren't exactly who they seem. This is a very funny movie. More than that though, the movie has heart and that only adds to the overall feel of the movie. On the surface this is just another sex comedy that has many of the same ideas as other movies but the bits of seriousness and heart really help the movie become more than that. I laughed out loud many times in this and have to say that this was surprisingly one of the better comedies I have seen in the last year or so. Expand

Yet it makes the most of it's four way team of Efron, Kendrick, Plaza, and Devine. They all bounce off of each other nicely. What really makes the movie work though is several, unbelievable set pieces that set a new high bar for dirtiness and shock value in comedies. Lately it seems like every R-rated comedy is trying to one up the rest in some way or another. Usually they try too hard and it ends up getting in the way of the actual humor. Not here though. I haven't seen a comedy that hits this level of vulgarity while still making me laugh in the process.

The plot is kind of bare as it's a sort of "we need to save the wedding and also grow up in the process" set-up. The sub-plots are actually pretty good here. One of the best goes to the bride-to-be's struggle with letting loose. A girl's just got to have fun sometimes, and seeing her try to cut loose leads to some of the movie's most outrageous and hilarious gags. Kendrick gets a nice one as well dealing with abandonment and heartbreak. Everyone else deals with things like insecurities and not being able to let go of one another and make their own path. It may all be pretty basic, but it's a little heart to the film to go alongside all of the filth.

Not everything is perfect though. They fire off a lot of lines here and not all of them are funny. Particularly early on. Devine is sometimes given some way too over-the-top moments like a particular crying scene with Jim Carrey-esque facial expressions that just feel out of place. Kendrick's character can also be a little too cartoonish to fit along as well. Efron and Plaza are perfect though. Carrying scenes where the other two are held back.

A comedy that will definitely surprise you with how far it is willing to go. However, it is likely also to surprise you just as much with how easily it can make you laugh. With four hilarious people center-stage and a great selection of supporting cast members and cameos to back them up, it's hard to not be pulled in by the amount of comedic talent onscreen. Especially since they are given some great, shocking stuff to work with.

As expected, they end up with an equally-wild duo (Anna Kendrick & Aubrey Plaza). The filmmakers didn't fall for the current trope of outlandish jokes and gross-out gags. Instead, they allowed the characters (and occasional funny lines) to carry the comedy. Devine is the focus of the fun: his wacky, uninhibited antics make the movie. The others are enjoyable and add to the upbeat energy. While this isn't a breakthru in any way, it does make for an entertaining "date." Expand

Sorry Mike and Dave, it's an Alice and Tatiana's free vacay.

I should be honest that I had some good laughs, but not the overall film was impressive. For me it was a chick film, and Anna Kedrick and Aubrey Plaza are the lead actors. I really loved their parts and that's the reason I had no issue watching it, but like usual Zac Efron ruined it. I won't blame him completely, but he and Adam Devine's roles did not deliver as what the title expresses. I mean they get their wedding date, but the title should have been 'Alice and Tatiana Goes for a Free Vacay' or something like that.

It was like a 'Brideamaid' kind of film, but there are too many adult jokes. The story was sort of based on the real, and that's just a joke to begin the narration. The advertisement was real, but the remaining story was fictional. From there, how the plot developed was totally makes no sense, but it does not matter because it is a comedy. Especially the initial parts, but later on, it gets better, only the comedy wise. In some way it was not bad, and not good either to recommend to others. So it is nothing more than a decent timepass film, but some people might find it most annoying.

Essentially, it began with these two single fellas whose parents complain to them that they’re always starting trouble at every party. So in order to stay in line, they are told to find dates for their upcoming sister’s wedding in Hawaii. As a joke, they throw an ad up on Craigslist, their description for the essential date looking something like this:
An excuse to get dressed up
Open bar & food all night
Eccentric/downright dangerous bro-2-bro dance moves (may need to sign a waiver)
Adventure
Mystery
Suspense
True Love
Royalties once our night's story is developed into a romantic comedy*

*if this happens (we estimate the chances at 85%) we refuse the right to let Ashton Kutcher play either of our characters, however, we will consider him for a supporting role.

Next thing they know, they get over 6,000 responses from girls who find them attractive, leading to appearances in talk shows and a series of mock-dates. Fox Studios even made the last part of their ad come true. The unfortunate result is a wild and mean-spirited “comedy” that exists for all the wrong reasons.

The two leading males, Mike and Dave, are played by the overly handsome Adam Devine (Mike) and Zac Efron (Dave). Their dates are played by the even more overly attractive Aubrey Plaza (Mike’s date) and Anna Kendrick (Dave’s date). None of these four young stars are as funny as you’d think they are, and they each resort only to screaming like drunk bozos to spice up the sleazy screenplay. They’re all unbearably annoying to watch, Anna Kendrick in particular. The supporting cast was equally as horrible, say for instance Sugar Lyn Beard, who plays the soon-to-be-married sister of Mike and Dave. She’s not exactly a “bad actress,” she just has this annoying high-pitched voice that doesn’t even sound that natural.

But that’s not even the worst of it. No, the worst is yet to come.

There is no story, but rather a series of jokes that drag on and on and on without a clear punchline. Within the hour and thirty-eight minutes you’ll need to suffer through, a girl falls off a roof and gets seriously hurt, a building catches fire at a 4th of July party, a grandfather dies at his birthday celebration, a girl gets hit in the face by an all-terrain vehicle and is heavily bruised the day before her wedding rehearsal, and all of these bits are intended to be the most hilarious thing ever. But did I laugh? Well no, but the audience in my screening were hysterical throughout the entire movie, which makes me incredibly worried.

Emotional moments of redemption are attempted by the third act, but none of them are earned nor appropriate. The crazy events and dirty jokes all try to meet up in some sort of message about how life is not about getting the big things. Yeah, right. Just the number of “should I really be laughing at this” type of jokes glamorizes the romantic lifestyle rather than attacks it. So therefore, the redemption that this movie tries to get to is complete bull crap. In the end, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates becomes exactly how it started as: a joke. It thinks that funny is about being rebellious and mischievous, but there’s no way that has any affect in the long run.

It looked like derivative, unfunny garbage from what I'd seen on previews. But my wife and I watched it b/c I'd already rented it on Google Play Movies for my cousin to watch and he didn't and it was about to expire.

We were pleasantly surprised. The plot, though based on a true story, it contrived and serves only to get the characters to Hawaii for a wedding farce that feels sweet and old-fashioned at times, but which is also crass without crossing the line.

Aubrey Plaza and Anna Kendrick play "bad girls" that a pretty two-dimensional. It takes until the end of the movie before they (especially Plaza's character) have any real depth or motivation whatsoever. And that's partly the point--that they're vapid losers trying to scam the guys out of a vacation. But by the end they are given some depth and throughout the movie they are both serviceably funny. Plaza's accent though (ebonics? Jersey? hard to tell) comes and goes and is gone by the end of the movie. Her schtick from Parks & Rec's April Ludgate comes through here (dry, sarcastic, cold) but is not as funny on the big screen. She could benefit by being a little more human. Anna Kendrick seems out of place playing a "bad girl" but she does a decent job with what she's given.

Once the cast gets to Hawaii, the movie is a pretty generic mix of Wedding Crashers (which is referenced in the movie), Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and half a dozen other movies. The hijinks are not surprising, the plot is very predictable, and nothing will surprise you.

What makes the movie good, though, is what the cast does with the material. Zack Efron is actually very funny, but Adam Devine steals the show. I love Workaholics, and if you don't you might not feel the way I did, but his manic, hammy, over-the-top schtick comes across as sweet, genuine, earnest, well-meaning, and most of all... hilarious. So much humor today involves insults and people generally being terrible to one another. But he plays his character as very good natured (despite some quick lines that could be mean, but seem corny) and weird enough not to seem generic. The two guys play well off each other and they and the rest of the cast ad lib a lot of really funny lines. I laughed out loud a couple dozen times, which is a lot for me given recent comedies. And sometimes I'd still be laughing at something a minute or two later. Some of the comedy is pretty multi-layered for such a basic movie.

The supporting cast is very solid. Stephen Root as the dad is great. Kumail Nanjiani as a masseuse had me cracking up. And I can't finish the review without mentioning Alice Wetterlund as "Cousin Terry," or, as Devine calls her at one point, "Bisexual Fonzie." She has 3-4 scenes, but steals them all. Her character doesn't fit in and is kind of throwaway, but she's consistently hilarious every time she's on screen.

All in all, definitely worth a rental. Despite the good-naturedness of the movie, it is really raunchy. Foul language throughout, nudity, sexual acts, and prevalent, so heads up. Don't watch it with grandma.

For starters, the characters were just the typical run-of-the-mill goofballs that are most common with comedies and they learn a thing or two about being mature (don't they always?).
That's the problem with this movie: it's all clock-work and routine. It's obvious what will happen; it always happens with raunchy comedies. This has prompted me to ask whether raunchy comedy and juvenile humor, like found-footage, are meant to be gimmicks, as it doesn't seem like they can support an entire movie.
What more can I say? It wasn't funny (except for one scene), the characters and plot were rather dull and uninteresting, and the movie functions as a display for all of Hollywood to emphasize the problem with raunchy comedies. Despite some valuable moments and a bit of entertainment value, I can't grant Mike and Dave anything more than a seal of expendability.

A raunchy comedy about hard-partying brothers Mike (Adam Devine, Zac Efron) who start a public campaign to find perfect dates (Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza) for their sister’s Hawaiian wedding, so the family would be pleased for once.A raunchy comedy about hard-partying brothers Mike (Adam Devine, Zac Efron) who start a public campaign to find perfect dates (Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza) for their sister’s Hawaiian wedding, so the family would be pleased for once. Supposedly based on a true story.
American mainstream comedies have a lot of improvised dialogue and scenes these days which can be great. Also, as in this case, it can bring mediocre results when there’s not much content backing all that impro-ing, or the players are not able to get creative enough.
In this case, there’s enough story for an unpretentious 98 minute entertainment but the dialogue remains generic and performances feel uninspired.
Both leading men, Efron and Devine, have done this sort of thing so much that they're always kind of cool. But the leading ladies, Aubrey and Kendrick, don’t impress at all. They don’t develop much of a flow of their own and settle for copying the guys.
Dirty jokes are not that good either, and the blissful massage section which is supposed to be one of the major setpieces, is just painfully unfunny.
„Mike and Dave“ comes from the writers of „Neighbors“ and „Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising“ but offers none of the fun and energy of said comedies, not that these were true classics or anything.
It certainly doesn’t help that at least three of the four leads have done this sort of thing way too much in recent past. It’s hard to get excited again when all you’re seeing is a case of SSDD.

However, the movie as a whole was better than I was anticipating. The plot did not seem to lag, like other comedies of this nature tend to do. I do not know if this is due to four strong actors playing the bulk of the material, but I liked it. Things I didn't like was the sudden switch in moods. I will not spoil, but I thought there was a sudden attitude switch that didn't transition as well as it could have. Overall, I would recommend this movie to people who like the inappropriate comedies. I enjoyed it. Expand
