I like the first film, this one is fine. Takes a bit to get going, stays a bit too long past its welcome, but middle chunk is fun.

IN A NUTSHELL:

This sequel to the summer blockbuster The Meg features a research team that encounters multiple threats while exploring the oceanic trench. Add in environmental messaging about evil mining operations and humorous conversations about parenting, and you get a green sequel that doesn’t have the same bit as the first film.
The film was directed by Ben Wheatly. Writing credits go to Jon Hoeber, Erich Hoeber, and Dean Georgaris.

THINGS I LIKED:

If you like Jason Statham as I do, you’ll get a kick out of this movie. He also worked as one of the Executive Producers of the film. He’s great a comedy, drama, and, of course, action. If you liked the first Meg movie, this is more of the same schtick…and a lot of fun.
Other cast members include Jing Wu, Shuya Sophia Cai, Page Kennedy, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Sienna Guillory, Cliff Curtis, and Skyler Samuels. Everyone does a great job.
Like the first Meg movie, there is a large Chinese influence. I’ve been to China many times on business trips and love the country and its people. One of my sons even married a lovely girl from Hong Kong! I now have a half-Chinese grandson who is ridiculously adorable.
Impressive set pieces.
For a creature feature, we see plenty of crazy action.
The movie, thankfully, doesn’t take itself too seriously. The trailer clearly showed us this would be a goofy, summer, popcorn movie.
If you enjoy watching mean-spirited, stupid people die, this film is for you.
Some of the VFX are great, while others aren’t so great.
The scenarios are ridiculous, but no one will ever say this movie isn’t creative!
In addition to an even bigger Meg, than we saw in the first film, we see sharks, more Megs, and a bunch of creepy, crawly monsters that fight dirty. THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

You can’t fault people for their heavy Chinese accents, yet some people probably will.
Apparently, Page Kennedy, one of the actors in the film who happily collected his paycheck stated, “This is some dumb a$$ shiX. Mark my words.”
British director Ben Wheatley is known for his horror movies such as Free Fire, In The Earth, and Kill List. Fans of the horror genre are disappointed that this movie doesn’t have enough blood and gore. I’m totally fine without all of that!
Sometimes, it’s hard to tell exactly what’s happening in the dark scenes and when creatures are all over the place attacking humans.
I hate shaky cam.
It’s outlandish.
The villains are easily unlikeable and just silly. TIPS FOR PARENTS: In the first scene, we see dangerous, prehistoric creatures fight and devour each other.
Lots of destruction.
People are in perilous situations
A lot of people die.
People violently fight other people and creatures with various weapons.
Blood and gore

I was honestly surprised by how much I loved it, but I think it's because this one started out action-packed and immediately drew you into the tale in a way that I found refreshing and fun! It was actually a better film than the first one and I was very impressed with Jason Statham's acting in such a caring and protective role where he was pure of heart and conviction while still smart and adept as always. It was thrilling to see him tackle a megalodon shark in the way he did and I was also really impressed by the entire crew. There were some refreshingly funny comedic scenes and the use of a .50 caliber in impractical but effective ways. I was both on the edge of my seat and laughing my head off on the random and truly never knew what to expect next. There were even a few jump scares that caught me entirely off guard but were welcome thrillers to offset some of the more serious moments. It had heartwarming love and connection at the core of everything. Still, the story pushed forward to also give emphasis to the importance of respecting nature and mankind's obsession with greed constantly getting in the way of coexistence with the other entities that share our space. I

It was an epic movie, and I would like to say it is one of my favorite films featuring Jason in a lead role - hands down!

This venture involves a dull, dark deep dive into the "trench," then several struggles to survive, most of which are predictable. Once they get back to a beach with tourists, the watery disaster begins. This segment of destructive mayhem offers the most fun until Statham "morphed into an everyman superhero, defying odds that can only be accomplished through movie effects." That's from my review of the original, but still applies. The incredulity of the plot and holes in the logic provide plenty of eye-rolling. Much of the action is average, but for "someone who enjoys a predictable popcorn escape, this one will keep you entertained." Again, a quote from my orig review. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Not nearly as good as the first one because they didn't show enough of the Megs. Too much time spent on a human vs. human conflict and not enough on the sharks that we all came to see. This is co-financed by a Chinese production company so it is has Chinese actors with major roles. The Chinese guy's English was hard to understand with a thick accent. The girl was just very annoying. Also, this 14 year old girl was apparently the little girl from the first movie where she was probably around 5. So 9 years should have passed, but in the film it was implied that only 3 years passed. Also it was implied that Jonas had a romantic relationship with the girls mother, but it doesn't explain how she died. Not that it was important, but still. I would wait for this to come on bluray or a streaming service, not worth seeing in the theater. Expand

Sorry lads, not only isJonas Taylor (Jason Statham) the Megalodon punching, eco-terrorist fighting knucklehead is back and so are the Megs. Lots of Megs this time, not just one, because that will make it better than the first movie right? Sorry lads, not only is this sequel not better than The Meg it’s somehow worse. Can someone explain to me how you make a movie about giant sharks boring? Somehow they managed it because a movie about giant sharks should be anything but boring.

The worlds “smartest” scientists apparently didn’t learn their lesson that took place in the first movie four years previous and they continue their exploration of the deepest depths of the ocean. Since we last saw the team, they now have a Meg in captivity, as you do. But don’t worry it’s very secure and no chance the Meg will escape at any point. Statham and his team go on yet another mission down in the Mariana Trench, home to the Megs and some other ancient sea life, because that’ll end well. Due to some complications, they accidently blow a huge hole in the thermal layer, you know the only thing keeping all the scary prehistoric creatures away from the rest of the ocean. Well they blow a hole through that again and unleash the Megs onto the world. Here we go again, who could have possibly foreseen this and doesn’t this all feel very familiar?

For anyone wondering why The Meg even got a sequel at all it made a boatload of money in the cinemas. Lucky for us that means more Megs, but even getting director Ben Wheatley on-board wasn’t enough to rescue this mess. Meg 2: The Trench forgot it’s entire audience only want to see a bunch of Megalodons chomp on everything in the ocean for 90 minutes. We’re not here for the eco-terrorists, and corruption storylines with half-assed, one dimensional villains. Again it fell into the same trap as the first Meg and took itself way too seriously. I felt stupid watching this movie and at about the halfway mark all I could think of is there’s very little Megs in this Meg movie. The many unnecessary plot lines are stupid, the acting is stupid, the script is stupid and the Oscar for most underwhelming monsters in a monster movie goes to all the Megs that appeared in Meg 2: The Trench. They were absolutely useless and got upstaged in their own movie.

The first Meg movie had a similar problem in that it took itself way too seriously and didn’t have enough people getting chomped on. Like it’s a movie about a giant shark, if it plays out as a serious movie like Jaws then it’s set itself up for failure from the beginning. Having Ben Wheatley (Kill List, High-Rise) take over the franchise honestly didn’t make any difference, and I can only guess he needed a quick paycheque so I hope it was worth it. Even with ultra-low expectations, Meg 2 was a giant disappointment. It fails as an action movie and it fails as a monster movie. It doesn’t even deliver what it promises and the Megs ultimately get upstaged by some other prehistoric creatures and boring subplots. I just wanted a cheesy, entertaining monster movie. That’s all I wanted, is that too much to ask? Like it’s predecessor, it doesn’t have nearly enough laughs to place it in the “so bad it’s good” category. Honestly I got more laughs watching Lavalantula (yes it’s a real movie) than I did watching Meg 2: The Trench.

Recommended for anyone who thinks Jaws: The Revenge is a masterpiece, but honestly if you want a shark movie that actually falls into the “so bad it’s good” category, Deep Blue Sea or Sharknado are better choices than Meg 2: The Trench.

As interesting as it is to add more of the same thing that the previous film had and rip off Jurassic Park, it isn't getting any easier to sit down for 2 hours of my life that I can never get back to watch whatever flavor of the month action film comes out starring nearly washed up actors. What is this? The Fast and the Furious franchise?

Disregarding that more giant sharks isn't actually that scary, I'd like to also make special mention of the absolute baloney word salad Ocean science going on here that make an already difficult suspension of disbelief drop my jaw even more further than was previously possible. A secret layer somewhere in the Ocean where giant sharks live, eh? What do they eat? Why would you put a station down there? Do they know where we actually get materials for the technology we use everyday? Because its most assuredly NOT in the Ocean. The actual cost of keeping such a station active, the submersibles, and the fact that its in the deepest part of the Ocean because this is King Kong or something would be so astronomically high that it couldn't possibly be worth what they were mining for down there. Its ridiculous.

I also really enjoyed the character that mostly spoke chinese, who never got killed off even though it really seemed like it was written for that to happen multiple times. The love interest/ wife or whatever she was who just never came back had a daughter with Jason Statham's character who doesn't even act like its his daughter. The tone of the script is just clueless. Kind of like watching 20,000 leagues under the sea from 1954, except more Chinese and a larger budget. Also the black dude spoke like a black dude and had a really big gun. Wow, so progressive!

I enjoy stupid shark movies. I thought the first Meg was ok, but man this movie was a complete snore fest. First just ignore the books, which are actually really interesting. Second most of the movie doesn't even have the stupid sharks. TheI enjoy stupid shark movies. I thought the first Meg was ok, but man this movie was a complete snore fest. Es una película bastante entretenida con un guión simple, personajes creíbles y con unos tintes de humor estupendos. Muy buen ritmo, variedad y buena acción. Super recomendable

Perhaps you might think that Wu Jing's involvement would bring a different kind of excitement to this Sino-American monster film, but in reality, just like its predecessor, Meg 2: The Trench still feels casual, formulaic, and mediocre.

It is an entertaining movie, but at the same time there are many arts in which the effort is not made with the CGI and crazy scenes so absurd that they border on ridiculous.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros:
- Well-directed action sequences
- Likable protagonists, passable side characters
- Visually appealing
- Not afraid to indulge in the ridiculous nature of its premise

Cons:
- Lack of character development
- No message or moral
- Weak and underdeveloped human antagonists
- Plot is an excuse for action (not really a big con for this type of movie but don’t go in expecting an engaging story)

Meg 2: The Trench is a film that plays things safe within its genre, prioritizing thrilling action sequences over anything else. As a result, the parts of the film without the Megs involved felt dragged out, and the entire middle of the movie was dull when compared to the promising start and the chaotic finale. The subplot of the illegal mining operation that the protagonists encountered, run by Montes (played by Sergio Peris-Mencheta), was definitely the weakest part of the film. The scene where Jess (Skyler Samuels) reveals that she is betraying them and tries to get the group to kill Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) felt really unnecessary and mostly just padded out the runtime. Furthermore, in the final act, Driscoll’s mercenaries are the weakest threat present, as they are mostly just torn apart by the dinosaur-like creatures seen at the start of the film (apparently called Snappers). With that being said, the action did deliver. The Fun Island sequence made sure that the stakes were felt, as the movie’s monsters relentlessly devoured anyone who lingered around the coast for too long.

Wu Jing’s character was surprisingly charming even though his overconfident nature was a tad unrealistic given the situations, and his family bond with Jonas and Meiying (Shuya Sophia Cai) was heartfelt enough for me to hope that they all survive the film’s events. DJ (Page Kennedy) & Mac (Cliff Curtis) also had a few funny lines and acted as solid side characters throughout the film, but the rest of the cast felt expendable. The villains felt more irritating than threatening and lacked any real motive besides money (besides Montes, who had a vendetta against Jonas), and the story would honestly have been relatively similar (maybe even more enjoyable) without them, but it was at least fun to see them get eaten by the Megs.

The action scenes, especially Statham’s jetski escapade, were definitely the highlights of the film. It was generally lacking in character development and emotional drive, and the plot was more of an excuse to have people fight and/or run away from giant sharks (alongside a giant octopus and the Snappers, which were probably just in the film for more chaos in the final act), but that’s to be expected from a summer blockbuster like this. It’s pretty much exactly what you’d expect, so I’d say it’s worth the watch if you liked the first one or just want to see sharks kill people and vice versa, but isn’t really a loss if skipped out on.
