(Mauro Lanari)
Since statistics show that "arranged marriages" last longer than "love marriages", this nineteenth-century and Victorian invention of ours would deserve at least a minimum of deepening. The suggested hypothesis is that interpersonal affective relationships can't not fail because, before that, there would be an unresolved infrapersonal conflict, the "Spaltung" a.k.a. inner splitting. Therefore a mumblecore that merely describes the phenomenology of such failure as already too many previous film is just useful to mitigate the frustration of those who identify with the couple of protagonists.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

The now iconic fight is the movie's centerpiece, both Scarlett and Driver are at their best and truly shows how easily love can sour. It's easy to pick a side but I don't think it's the point, the point is that there is no good side ,divorce is a civil war. It's ugly, brutal and hateful but only because there was love there. Expand

I had no idea what I was going into when I pressed play to watch this film on Netflix. By the end, I was emotionally wrecked.

Driver and Johansson without a doubt gave the best performances of their careers. And, I’m pretty sure at the very least Adam Driver secured himself an Oscar nomination. The apartment scene. That is all.

Know going in that this is not a fun movie. It’s very raw and very real and it’s one of the most beautifully horrific films I’ve ever seen. I highly recommend it, but it won’t be for everyone.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Relationship to truth: True, but. It's about a divorce. The child who went through the divorce is telling the story. They may possibly for example find it far too painful, to see parents as incompatible. Description: It is a report of the sad? end?, of a ten year relationship between two people, recovering from the intensity of falling in love and being on the New York theatre scene, represented as a move, by the mother, from New York to L.A.

Reaction: Music: good. Wanted less at one point.
Costumes: everyone is well dressed. Direction: quite beautiful. Wasn't sure, the ceiling was the most interesting bit, when the lawyers first meet.
Timing: good in general.
Acting: very good. Bit disappointed , Wallace Shawn told to be creepy old fella.
Script: Recognisable pattern of speech. Self harm "joke"? end of Act 3 badly backfired.
Case study. I glossed over it the first and second time. But. There is a joke, that is Adam Driver is energy conscious, and so always turns out the lights- even if you are in the room reading.
Ha ha. Cute observation.
What instantly happens, is that he is in the wrong. He's a grievance. He makes a joke of his status as a nuisance even, turning the lights off as he leaves, S.J.'s house.
We need to be turning off the lights, as a society.
Jokes like this, make it more difficult, to get the message across. Hypothesis A.
Basically, it is well made stuff. If the author needed to get it off his chest to be a normal person again, go for it. I will probably not remember it, in the years that are (hopefully) to come.

Does it use beautiful people to get your attention? N.B's parents probably were, beautiful people.

I think overall, and I am short of time.
I am nobody in particular. I have a short temper, and a big mouth. One residue from this movie is- a scene where S.J. is asked what are her strengths as a parent, what her weaknesses. This is a reality check. But a fair question. That I am still thinking about. Thanks.

Everything feels real (almost like "raw"). The authenticity is underscored by the grandiose spectacle, actually all those involved, but above all by Scarlett Johansson and even better Adam Driver.

Lifelong tragic comedy, especially the sober dealing with the consequences of a divorce dispute and the whole beginnings of it, including the machinery behind it, especially the common practice in the USA, illustrates the drama behind it all.

Ultimately, there is hardly anything wrong with this film, maybe only that it could have been a little shorter in two places.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Marriage Story offers an inside look into the story of a struggling couple (they do separate) and messy divorce. Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson both give probably their best performances probably ever. Everyone does pretty dang well with what they're are given in terms of screen time (especially Laura Dern). The only weak spot when it comes to performances is the child actor; I'm willing to shrug off the below-average performance since it's just a kid. When it comes to cinematography Robbie Ryan (D.O.P) does a fantastic job. To be honest, I have a major soft spot for the score in Marriage Story since it was done by the amazing Randy Newman (Toystory, Monsters Inc, Cars, etc.). Randy is a able to masterfully set and change the tone of each scene. Now for the best part of this movie, Noah Baumbach. Noah Baumbach is able to create an amazing screenplay here; He is able to masterfully weave Charlie and Nicole's stories and perspectives together so that you can sympathize and care for both characters. The dialogue in this film is so well done (as you would expect from Noah). It is a good mix of realistic, but still interesting. All in all, there's a lot that went into making this film, and you can tell everyone not only did their part but executed it masterfully.

Sidenote:
I like how in the end they seem closer to each other(not in a romantic way) even though they separated.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The fact that Marriage Story is freely available on Netflix and that it is one of the most triggering relationship films of the year makes it feel like the movie equivalent of the Ice Bucket Challenge for bored couples everywhere. Last week, plans fell through to go bowling and we had recently seen Marriage Story capture some accolades in Oscar Nominations, so against my better judgement, we subjected ourselves to yet another hyped Netflix movie. Reluctantly, I'll say that it exceeded expectations and maybe even felt like a film I could revisit at a later date, when I am alone, unhappy, and nursing festering old wounds. Whatever the opposite of a chick-flick romcom is for people going through a lot is. The film plays a bit of a game as a Rorschach test for the audience over which character is sympathetic, Charlie or Nicole. Wife says that one of the failings of the film is that both are so unlikable that you don't actually root for either of them. It works insofar as each scene is a little battle for our attention, Nicole's extended and unexpected monologue at her lawyer's office, which sets the scene for us about the origins of their divorce. "Plus," she quips at the end, "I think he's **** our stage manager." The movie actually does a great job of teasing out the differing standards of emotional and sexual fidelity for men and women, there's never really much moral weight attached to Charlie's infidelity. He is appropriately cagey about it over the phone with Nicole when she confronts him about it, his lawyer is similarly cagey, repeating Charlie's simpering accusation of "computer hacking" in court, and Nicole has her moment to rebound in some hipster's car at a costume party, to make sure we even the scores decisively. The film relies on the build up of goodwill by Charlie and Nicole early in the movie so that we can watch them implode in that powerful scene at Charlie's apartment. Friend came and couldn't sit through more than the first thirty minutes, because he didn't want to see their relationship get any more **** which is a first in movie viewing with Friend. The banking of goodwill feels patient and measured in a similar but actually more impactful way than a movie like The Goldfinch. The scene that elicits the most sympathy seems like Adam Driver getting sloppy Halloween seconds in unfamiliar LA neighborhoods--the five candies that his son drops on the floor is somehow worse than the one that we see him collect from a convenience store. And the family observer who visits Charlie at his home is maybe the cringiest scene which turns into the funniest scene, worth the price of admission (which in most people's case I understand to be free anyway, but such is the mystery of Netflix).

Besides the dramatic work that both Johansson and Driver do, they both have standout musical scenes, which I think is one of the reasons why this movie may have distinguished itself to critics looking for deep and varied performances. Johansson's feels more natural and earned, but when Driver has his karaoke moment in the spotlight, it's already an established game for a scene that the movie has established, so it feels at the very least like a moment of rebalancing, a variation on a theme, rather than out of place.

All things considered, Marriage Story is a simple movie with modest ambitions and some novel stage directions that let characters explore the space for extended cuts. Its comic timing in the face of all sorts of nastiness is a gem.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great film. Brutal to watch. I cried. Overall I wasn't sure who was the "bad guy" because there were times when I didn't like Scarlett Johansson's character at all. I found myself feeling bad for Adam Driver's character more than I wanted to. I got the message loud and clear that she always took care of both her son and her husband, nothing new with this dynamic. And yes, she'd made sacrifices for his career, also nothing new. But the husband made some valid points during their big blowout that made me really think. We all make our own choices, and we can't really be mad at another person for the choices we make voluntarily. By the end, I found the movie cathartic. What was the saddest, most frustrating part for me was that their relationship seemed to fall apart more because the wife didn't make her needs clear enough to her husband. Seems like much of the lawyer crap could have been avoided if they'd just communicated better, but without those lawyers we wouldn't have a movie or the great performances of Laura Dern and Ray Liotta. Definitely worth watching especially if you are married with kids. Expand

Well, then we have a sad and philosophical movie filled with sad, sometimes funny, (and sometimes both at the same time), moments that make you question your own relationships, and the ones around them.

The movie itself is a very entertaining drama, but it's more than only that, it carries many hidden messages underneath various layers of incredible acting and amazing soundtrack, it carries messages about family, love, and hate, and it does this in a very meaningful and sensitive way.

Both Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson deserved Oscars for their very convincing and touching acting, that, together with the amazing script written by Noah Baumbach, creates one of the best Netflix productions I've ever seen.

I wasn’t sure if I wanted to put myself through the no-doubt emotional ringer of Baumbach’s story of the dissolution of a marriage. It was a hard film, but a damned fine one. It had an honest script that only a few times felt like it wasn’t truly drawn from life – mostly when we get speeches. I think I’m the only one who didn’t care for Laura Dern’s Mary/motherhood speech. Took me out of the naturalness in everything else. Adam Driver and ScarJo where wholly believable. And screw Ray Liotta’s character. That guy ruined everything, as I honestly cared for both of our leads. While I feel the movie is more in Charlie’s side, the film is mostly balanced as not not be good-guy/bad-guy and important as through everything Charlie and Nicole love each other and that’s important. I don’t think it’ll crack my top ten when I update but comes darn close. Expand

On one level writer-director Noah Baumbach’s latest film feels like a divorce procedural. We follow a young attractive couple (Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver) as they agree to keep things simple and not involve lawyers, then involve lawyers, begin a custody battle, and try to navigate all of the emotional and legal complexities of legally dissolving a marriage. On another level, Marriage Story is a showcase of brilliant performances ranging from subtle to ostentatious, comical to moving. I enjoyed Marriage Story far more than I expected though I hesitate to recommend it since very few people (myself included) are able to have a good time by watching people argue and get divorced for over two hours. The divorce gets rocky but the film doesn’t so much and if you are in the right mood for a relationship/divorce drama you’ll find a decent, somehow, feel good movie.

This is the kind of movie that hangs entirely on its performances. Fortunately, the leads and supporting players all turn in strong performances. Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver have both earned Oscar nominations for their performances as the wife and husband seeking to uncouple themselves while remaining involved with their eight-year-old son and maintaining their careers. Both earn and lose and then earn back your sympathy. Charlie (Driver) is a successful New York theater director whose latest avant-garde production is headed to Broadway. Nicole (Johansson) once starred in a popular Hollywood movie but since meeting and marrying Charlie has committed herself to the stage. A Los Angeles native, Nicole has always wanted to spend more time on the West Coast and now has landed a role in a pilot that will likely become a series. Charlie thinks of them as a New York family and expects Nicole and their son to move back to New York once the pilot is done. When Nicole decides to officially file for divorce the real conflict between them begins.

Baumbach’s script does not overtly take sides though it leans toward Charlie, especially toward the end of the film. The explosive climatic argument between Nicole and Charlie gives a chance for both actors to express intense emotions, but it is Driver who gets to let out overwhelming pathos. A court appointed observer—played with welcome awkward comic deadpan by Martha Kelly—is assigned to visit and interview both parents, but we only see the visit Charlie. Charlie does his best to present as an ideal father before the visit falls into dark comedy. In a wonderfully delivered monologue early in the film, Nicole gives us her backstory, both life events and emotional. After this scene the perspective shifts to Charlie and never really shifts back to Nicole. We are as blindsided as Charlie is by claims on money and custody by Nicole’s lawyer.

Nora, Nicole’s flashy and smoothly confident high-powered lawyer, is played with impressive ease by Laura Dern, who has earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination. We’re just as charmed and dazzled by her as Nicole, and just as stung by her as Charlie. Alan Alda delivers some great low-key comedy as Charlie’s first divorce lawyer. He’s old enough that his hands shake but also old enough to know how bad a divorce can get, and how it will likely end, so, he recommends just starting there. On the complete opposite end of the spectrum is Ray Liotta as Charlie second divorce lawyer, a high powered and extremely expensive pit-bull. He speaks with such speed and ridiculous intensity that he can’t help but be funny and believable as a ruthless lawyer. Julie Hagerty is a welcome presence as Nicole’s actress mother. She has so much flighty warmth that she secretly helps Charlie find a divorce lawyer.

I’m sure certain viewers that have been through a divorce or even a bad breakup will find something relatable with the characters and situation in Marriage Story. I wouldn’t be surprised if other viewers find these characters and their situation unrelatable. Nicole and Charlie, though not wealthy, are in a very upper middle class bracket. They are so accomplished that momentous life changing events like landing a starring role in a TV show and earning an Emmy nomination for directing (Nicole) and winning a MacArthur “genius” grant (Charlie) are just background plot points. Whether you can relate or not, the performances from Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver are of such a rare quality as to keep you invested in their emotional journey.

It’s really well-acted, the writing is excellent and the story is engaging. It deals with some pretty tough subject matter, it’s about a couple going through a divorce, but it also has light moments of comedy. It feels very realistic. It’s also really well-shot and well-edited. This is one of those rare movies where there really isn’t anything bad about it at all. Well, maybe the score is a little weird and distracting sometimes. It’s composed by Randy Newman and sounds right out of a Pixar movie. Wallace Shawn of The Incredibles and Toy Story fame is even in it. It seems out-of-place sometimes, but the rest of the movie is so good I think I can overlook it. Overall, this movie is a must-see and I hope it wins some Oscars! Expand

It's also a supremely well-executed artistic experience on a structural, dramatic, thematic, and technical level. It's rare to have a film operate so meticulously in its characterization process, yet remain so fascinating and emotionally impressive. In many other films, you'd label it a potential issue to have your average scene length be somewhere between 7-10 minutes, and to have most of those scenes involve characters simply talking to one another. But these are very carefully constructed moments of build-up, allowing the audience to breathe these characters in and empathize with every action taken and word spoken, no matter how hurtful or diabolical it may seem on the surface. At the end of the proverbial day, we find we're dealing with nuanced human beings trying desperately to navigate their respective ways through a tragic phase of existence (a kind of death, as the movie so aptly puts it). It's sad, heartwarming, brilliant, and earnest -- an experience I know I'll carry with me for some time. Expand

The directing, cinematography and overall presentation are fine but it's a very entertaining and well written story, with complex and realistic characters with both pros and flaws that will make almost impossible to see who is the "hero" and who is the "villain". This is not a movie about two people yelling at each other it's much more than that. To make it short: Brilliant writing, brilliant characters, entertaining story and masterful performances. The only thing I didn't like as much is the score. I mean, the score is not bad but sometimes I think it didn't fit the movie. Without context, the score itself is amazing but when it's played during the movie I couldn't stop thinking about Toy Story.

Overall, I highly recommend it.

It also is thought provoking look into the ugliness of a divorce. Still, I thought the ending was a bit cheesy and lacked nuance. A random change of heart. A beautifully written film, with dialogue that has the entire audience on the edge of their seat and engrossed completely in the story and the characters. Every scene felt like a piece of art in and of itself, drawing you in and then slapping you in the face with its sheer brilliance. There is no villain or hero and the movie never takes a side. For two hours, you watch them go through every conceivable emotion, and you believe them in every moment. The supporting cast is great as well. The plot is simple, but that doesn't really hold the film back. My only complaint is that both characters are so financially successful that the money doesn't really come into the picture, except for a few lines where Driver complains about how much money he's spending on his lawyers. I would have liked to see the two of them making some really difficult financial decisions, like the ones people would face in a real divorce. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Marriage Story scored an extraordinary 94 on Metacritic and 96 on Rotten Tomatoes. One critic declared it is 'easily the most compelling divorce story since Kramer V Kramer.' I suppose it depends on what you consider compelling. There are plenty of other films about divorce but the one that springs to my mind is Todd Haynes' 2015 film, Carol, impeccably cast, acted and shot. Carol received a 10 minute standing ovation at Cannes that year and scored 95 on Metacritic, just one point more than MS (though Carol is a far superior film in every sense). There are a good deal of curtain-chewing and adult tantrums in MS but these don't disguise the fact that there is very little 'story'. MS is well acted but the characters don't really have much to work with. Their marriage has real problems, certainly, but good grief, what marriage doesn't? Basically, they need to talk more; she needs to be more assertive and he needs to listen and make compromises. Instead, they wind up paying absurd amounts of money for something that could easily have been worked out with more mediation. No doubt this happens all the time, but do we really need to witness the histrionics? Put simply, Marriage Story is mush in the same way that the weakest Woody Allen movies are mush. If you engage with that kind of jump-improv, indulgent, pseudo-self-analysis; if you like watching dewey-eyed, beautiful couples who have an almost perfect relationship talk themselves apart (leaving their oddly untraumatised child apparently saner and happier than either of them) then break out the popcorn and paper hankies. You're in for a treat. Expand

It never really feels rushed with individual scenes, but to make that possible, important background details are glossed over and so are the characters. The characters aren't especially generic, but still somewhat shallow and predictable. The plot certainly offers some surprises, but is also mostly predictable for someone familiar with divorce outside of a fictitious context. Ultimately, the movie is thin in terms of portraying the course of a marriage and divorce, but there's something to be said for its success on that front given the run time. The movie has its surprising moments of humor as well, but that's important because even with humor, I came out feeling more pessimistic about marriage, relationships, and people. But this movie didn't opt for the feel-good, sugar-coated route like most movies of this type do. It argues that things aren't really ever going to be black-and-white and doesn't give us one answer to the issues explored in the movie because there isn't. Expand

Didn't like the pace with numerous scenes protracted without adding much, if anything, to the story. Acting was really good, but I didn't care for the characters much. Egocentric and detached on one side, in denial and fighting for custody for some reason on the other. Overly long, sad and actually boring. Expand

Way more realistic, captivating, gut-wrenching and well paced than say, The Irishman, for example. That film was a nice piece of rich storytelling, slightly over-indulgent in its duration, but Marriage Story just resonated with me more. To be honest, I don’t think 2019 has been a great year for film. Preferred last year’s releases (Roma, The Favourite, A Star Is Born, Green Book, etc) I’m hoping on this Marriage Story winning big at the Oscars. It’s superbly acted, that conflict scene at around 1:30hr in to the film was top class. Excellent writing, directing, and yes, the ending was a beautiful end to the journey witnessed onscreen. I don’t get how anyone couldn’t like it, but then again, I found the ending to The Sopranos and Breaking Bad great. Both are polarising endings. Expand

Great screenplay, jaw-dropping performances, memorable score... everything here’s just so beautifully made that it’s hard not to love this movie. Please, give Driver, Johansson and Dern their Oscars!
