Utterly delightful film about a shell in search of his family. I was amazed at the stop motion animation and the incredible voice acting. Completely believable, and not just for children.

By the side, it takes a look at social media and it's peoples, but always into the perspective of Marcel. The animations are pretty good and done with a certain level of mastery. I give it 88%. Marcel is a movie I won't forget because, it was unique and told with the flair of a movie like Spirited Away. Expand

A feature length adaptation of the animated short film about a mollusc named Marcel. Marcel the Shell with Shoes On is an absolute delight from start to finish and will hit you right in the feels.

This is very out there so just roll with it and I promise you’ll love it. Dean (Dean Fleischer Camp) moves into an Airbnb which just so happens to be the home of Marcel the Shell and his grandmother Connie (who is also a shell). Fascinated by Marcel (voiced by Jenny Slate), Dean decides to make a film and uploads it online. Millions of passionate fans quickly fall in love with the adorable shell, and now his new popularity brings hope of finding his long lost family.

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On is charming, sweet and will no doubt capture the hearts of everyone. Marcel the Shell is so cute, you won’t be able to help but love it. The stop motion is incredible, as a fan of Aardman Animations from childhood, I’ve always adored stop motion and Marcel the Shell with Shoes On is wonderful. Marcel the mollusc is witty, sweet and finds the most innovative ways to navigate through life and as a one inch tall shell that does present many difficulties. A captivating idea with a story that will melt even the coldest of hearts. Sorry lads but if you didn’t like Marcel the Shell with Shoes On then there’s something wrong because it’s fabulous.

I love the idea for this film, it’s unique and emotional. A truly lovely story that touches on relationships, loss and friendship. Marcel the Shell with Shoes On is the kind of film anyone can enjoy and will definitely put a smile on your face. Highly recommended for everyone and suitable for all ages.

He has a large eye on the right side of his head and he wears sneakers on his barely visible feet. Marcel has a unique perspective on the world due to his height and his ability to view the world with wide-eyed, child-like wonder. Marcel has a rich, evocative vocabulary and he’s got a lot to say.

Fortunately, “Marcel...“came to the attention of Cinereach, a nonprofit trust that provides awards and grants for film production, early in the creative process. One can only imagine what this film might have become if left to Hollywood’s tender mercies. For example, one studio was very enthusiastic about producing a buddy movie that paired Marcel with John Cena. @#$%^&*

Dean (Dean Fleischer-Camp) discovers Marcel (voiced by Jenny Slate – “Bob’s Burgers,” “The Great North,” “Big Mouth” animated series) when he moves into an Airbnb for temporary lodging. Dean discovers that Marcel lives only with his grandmother Connie (voiced by Isabella Rossellini) and his pet, Alan, a piece of lint. Life has its challenges since, as Marcel explains, “It’s pretty much common knowledge that it takes at least 20 shells to have a community.” The balance of the film offers Marcel’s unique perspective on the world around him (“Some people say my head is too big for my body. And then I say, ‘Compared to what?’”). The story is driven by his search for his family following a mysterious disaster. Dean makes a YouTube video to facilitate Marcel’s search. Marcel gains millions of followers. He is interviewed by Lesley Stahl on “60 Minutes.” This feature film, which clocks in at 89 minutes, is based on a series of short films created by Camp and Slate that became a YouTube phenomenon. Here, Director/Writer Camp uses a mockumentary style that involves both stop-motion and live action sequences. Many scenes in the film involve Camp, off-camera, posing questions to Marcel. The overall effect of this effort is sweet, touching and heartfelt.

This is also a film with lofty ambitions; it’s totally unwilling to simply coast along on Marcel’s irresistibility. It’s a movie that has a lot to say about self-belief, about the importance of community and about the value of risk-taking and adventure. Most pointedly, it underlines the value of hope in the face of the realistically scary obstacles that abound in the real world. Rossellini’s Connie plays an essential role here. While Marcel’s diminutive size evokes our protective instincts and his intelligence and perceptiveness charm us, Connie shows that Marcel isn’t perfect. Through Connie, we see the fragility that lies just beneath Marcel’s bravado. She deftly helps him undo a few tidy, but premature, conclusions about the world around him. And, like my own grandmother, Connie is a role model who soldiers on in life and counsels Marcel that he shouldn’t give up on his dreams just because they’re scary.

Slate and Camp spent seven years on this passion project before it was finally brought to the big screen. “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On” is worth every moment of their efforts. It’s one of the best films of the year.

Marcel himselfMarcel the Shell with Shoes on follows Marcel, a Shell living with his grandmother after his family gets taken away. And through the help of a novice filmmaker named Dean, he gets all the help he needs to try and find them. Marcel himself falls in the same category that Paddington Bear does. Adorable, charming, and intriguing protagonists for film. Marcel just seems like a dumb Shell with a squeaky voice, but through the conflicts shown to him, he acts as if he's just a normal child going through these situations.

The conflict provides many ups and downs throughout the film as Marcel searches for his lost family, and enough feeling can be provoked throughout the story to make some cry.

Despite how negative the film's premise sounds, through the use of the main character, the side characters, and how they portray the world around them, Marcel can provide for any different group. It may be fun and funny for the kids in the audience, but it can provide teens and adults with messages that can change how they look at things and the people around them.

What is this overly hyped nonsense? Movie was an absolute bore from start to end, the main character being incredibly annoying with zero plot or direction. Good to put on if you are looking to take a nap is about it.

The movie quality wise is a 3 or so. It is insanely boring, but the movie is original, obviously has heart/care put into it, and the technical filmmaking and care with the shells is admirable. Because of that a 5 is pretty fair.

Directed and written by and starringA small 1in.-tall shell named Marcel (Jenny Slate) is documented as he embarks on an adventure in search of his family with the help of a young filmmaker and the shell's grandmother (Isabella Rossellini). Directed and written by and starring Dean Fleischer Camp as the filmmaker (he also happens to be the former husband of Slate with whom he created the viral YouTube video from 2010 off of which this film is based), this feature film retains the same type of big heart and adorable innocence that charmed fans of the original online video. Slate's voice talent is a delight to listen to as she brings Marcel to life with a curious sense of wonder, and Rossellini is also a treat here. As far as story is concerned however, even at a little under an hour and a half, the film does feel a little thinly stretched, what with it trying to fit a three-minute YouTube video into a feature film's worth of material, but there's just no denying the charm and warmth radiating from this film that makes you feel pretty darn good once it's over. Overall, fans of the original Marcel videos will likely eat this one right up. Everyone else will likely be charmed plenty by it too if they can look past the thin storyline that weighs things down a bit at times. Expand
