Who knew that this would be the only and last good Main line Superman Film in the new era of filmmaking? I'm not counting Batman Vs Superman.

And who knew that a Film from 2013, would still slap so hard, even after all these years? Shocking.

Do I think James Gunn can beat this film, no I don't, while James Gunn is not bad at writing, I don't think he can deliver the action scenes seen in this. Zack Snyder is just magic when it comes to action. I wish we would get films that are this rough, action-packed, but solemn. I guess Superman fans have a long time to wait...WB could at least give us a game.

The first DCEU movie that started it all. It is very good and acceptable, although it is not up to par, but some scenes were great and superior to the film itself.

The scene of the first flight of Superman is the one that I liked the most in the movie actually and I liked it a lot and his music is excellent for that scene and the most remarkable and superior part of the movie.

Although, it has several holes in the script and the story and the ending is somewhat satisfying and somewhat average but still a good ending to this movie. This movie is one of the good and remarkable things that the DCEU has and I recommend you see the movie, you won't regret it. The movie and the story are okay.

Dragon Ball Z × Superman × Zack Snyder = MOS

An outstanding and realistic approach on the Man of Steel. The flashback scenes, action sequences, cinematography, score and casting were executed in meticulous detail. Zack Snyder leaned heavily into the immigrant approach to Kal El's story, which I appreciated deeply. In my humble opinion, this is the greatest superhero film to grace cinema.

My favorite moments in this film are;
1) Fall of Krypton 2) Smallville fight sequence 3) The final fight sequence with Zod & Superman

Superman,For the past ten years, cinema has been swamped by an avalanche of superhero movies. Each one of them, from the most famous to the most obscure, is entitled to his film, in what is still a relentless hunt for box office money. Superman, however, is apart: he has been entitled, many decades ago, to a series of films in which he was played by the iconic Christopher Reeve, but only one of those films deserves to be remembered. More recently, in 2006, we saw an honorable attempt to bring the character back into cinema… but it seems that's what it was, although I think the 2006 film had several merits and qualities. Now, we are witnessing the new resurrection and the new foray into cinema, in a blockbuster where many millions were invested, but which does quite well in its task and gives us everything it promises.

Choosing Zack Snyder made me fear the worst. He's a director I don't think is skillful, he puts a lot of weight on the visual style and forgets to give us a good story. I felt calmer when I noticed Christopher Nolan's involvement in the conception of the story and the script. What the film gives us is a retelling of the same story we already know from the comic book and other films: Kal-El is the only survivor of Krypton, a planet where once lived an advanced civilization which, however, had eventually become corrupted and will explore their planet until destroy it. The film develops the last days of this planet and takes the opportunity to introduce us to characters like Jor-El and the villain, General Zod. The narrative develops very well until it reaches more or less halfway through. From there, the film loses its interest a little, as the story told loses space for successive and destructive action sequences. I particularly liked the way Lois discovers Superman's existence through her skill as a journalist, rather than (as in other films) the hero is always hiding and living a Platonic love for her.

Henry Cavill was an excellent choice for the protagonist, as he has the appropriate age, the essential charisma and adapted his physical bearing to the character's demands without losing his elegance and without forgetting to know how to act. Even so, I felt that the script didn't demand a lot of dramatic or psychological charge from the actor. Amy Adams is effective and does her job well, even though the script doesn't give her anything substantial to work with. Michael Shannon was a splendid villain, giving Zod an unusual dignity: he is not a madman, a psychopath or a deranged, he is the product of a failed social conception that conceived him to do only one thing… he is not adaptable nor can he be, he is doomed to disappear with the planet he was born to defend. Russell Crowe also did an excellent job in the role of Jor-El. In addition to these names, the film features guest appearances by Kevin Costner, Diane Lane and Laurence Fishburne.

In addition to a pleasant story (which only loses itself a little in the second half), this film is a visual show at the level of what Snyder already used us to, with massive CGI, green screen and several other expensive resources, very well executed. There's no doubt that the film didn't skimp on the technical budget, and the result is astounding: Krypton has never been this wonderful, with amazing cities and flying creatures that look like they came straight out of "Star Wars" or "Avatar". The action scenes, particularly in the final half, are quite remarkable, with a lot of destruction and spectacular explosions, as well as incredible and visually impressive spaceships. The cinematography is beautiful, crisp, well executed and well shot, the colors are bright, clean, and the sets and costumes are very good, particularly the hero and villains costumes. The sound effects are really good, they work really well, and the whole soundtrack does an excellent job.

Its relatively thrilly, certainly fast paced and is jam packed with CGI, so pretty much what I imagine most people would expect of such a film. I found it relatively engrossing and I thought that both Russell Crowe and Christopher Meloni did quite well in their roles, with Crowe's being more memorable as Clark's real father. Laurence Fishburne is also present, playing Perry White - the Daily Planets editor.

However, if I had to be negative, I'd say that the volume of special effects present in some scenes did perhaps become a little OTT (over the top) and some of the realism disappeared (due to the scale of explosions etc. in such a short distance area), which was a bit of a shame. Towards the end of the film, there wasn't perhaps quite as much to the plot as I may have liked there to be but it certainly quite watchable and entertaining never the less.

If your a fan of series like 'Smallville' and the 'Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman' series of the 1990s, then I reckon its likely you'll enjoy this. It did feel suitably atmospheric at times, in scenes set outside Earth. Its not quite 5 star material exactly but its pretty close - its certainly an entertaining watch for close to two and a half hours, so I'd recommend it on that basis. I'm not an expert on the character to be able to comment on how true to the original stor(ies) it is but I certainly enjoyed it in terms of being an engrossing, somewhat escapist type watch.

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Man of Steel is a movie that can just be described with one word - Metal. This movie is absolutely metal. If you don't like movies that have a grim, dark nature you will probably not like it. It's one of the biggest criticisms given about this movie. But for someone like me who actually likes a washed out colour palette, this was an excellent depiction of how low a simple, ordinary man would feel if he suddenly realises something is different about him, and when he has to keep all of this a secret because of how people might react when they see him.

The movie begins on Krypton. Until now no Superman movie had ever shown how awesome Krypton looks. I really liked the depiction. Like I said earlier, this movie is metal. The introduction scene of Krypton already speaks volumes about it. The visual effects, the music, the acting, everything makes the situation look very serious.

Then later the movie moves to Clark's childhood. In the first viewing I didn't understand why he suddenly started behaving weirdly after he saw everything with his X-ray vision. It was on the second viewing I understood he's slowly getting all his powers. This Superman isn't born with all powers. He is slowly receiving them. Then later he saves the children when their bus falls in the water. You can actually feel how tense the situation is. And when he did save them, instead of being appreciated, he had to face the consequences.

After he grows up and becomes a man, he has to deal with being an outcast. Someone who is treated like a freak can never be a beacon of hope. This can happen only if either he's treated nicely and encouraged when he uses his superpowers, or if he has never been ridiculed over it. The comics portray Superman to be a happy man, but they never show the mental pressure he has to go through in order to get that smile. And this movie absolutely nails it. Also keep in mind he's still Kal-El, or Clark Kent. Not Superman yet.

When he had to find his father, he didn't fly over there. Nor did he run at super speed. He walked all the way trying to hitch a ride. And when he finally reaches there, he doesn't straight-up start flying around. He takes his time to learn to fly. He crashes everywhere, and we can actually feel how much he's struggling to keep his balance. It's like when we learn to ride a bicycle or skate for the first time. We make mistakes, we fall. But then we get up and try again.

And when the Kryptonians arrive on Earth to take over the planet, they are trained soldiers who have learnt all their life that Krypton has to be saved no matter how harsh the means are, and they have all the technology they need to convert Earth into Krypton. On the other hand Kal-El is just a man who learnt to use his powers. He struggled a lot but finally managed to keep them all away. And finally when he kills Zod, he cries. He cannot handle the trauma of taking his fellow Kryptonian's life.

The only problem I had with this movie was, well, people are getting so many things to criticise over. These points make sense only on a second viewing or pausing the movie and introspecting about it. This isn't possible when watching a movie in a theatre. Probably that's why the movie wasn't very well received back when it released. But it's good to see it's finally getting the praise it deserves. I hope this movie gets more appreciation in the future. After all, it's the movie that made me like Superman. Before that I used to just see him as an ugly nerd who wears underwear on pants.

Superman has always been he ultimate immigrant, but I don't think any other movie had ever focused on that idea like MoS.
Many has noticed the religious aspects of this movie and had come to the (imo wrong) conclusion that Snyder is saying Superman=Jesus. Superman might be perceived as Jesus, and might try to be like him, but he's not a god (and definitely, not THE God).
One of the things I love the most about this film is that it is a sci fi movie. They really developed the idea of an alien from another planet, and oh boy, this movie's Krypton is so alive, so rich, so... alien.
Procreation (notice the phallic and vaginal shapes and objects of the culture and architecture of Kryptom, the womb-planet that gave birth to Superman) and parenting are two of the most important themes of this film, the parenting of Kal/Clark in particular. The love and guidance (sometimes conflicting, other times complimentary) provided by his human and kryptonian parents are depicted in some very touching moments.
This movie is also about choice. Freedom of choice, the pain of trying to guess what's the right choice, and the pain of making the right choice (which so many critics have misinterpreted as the film saying that you shouldn't do the right thing cause it's hard, which is so far from the real message of this movie).
The final fight between Zod and Superman is the most spectacular, and terrifying, superhero fight scene ever put on film. It reminds me a lot of Alan Moore's Miracleman in it's darkness and tone.
I love this film. Despite what some critics say, this movie is brilliant, full of layered meaning, hope and lots of heart.

A wonderful film that started a promising cool cinematic universe. Having reviewed it before Zack Snyder's justice League premiere, I am childishly glad that at least once justice prevails. The Man of steel is incredible!

I remember watching this in theatres in 2013 and loving it despite all the criticism when it came out but 9 years have passed and I wondered if I would still have the same feeling after watching it again? So is it still as great as I remembered it?

Firstly, the casting of Henry Cavill was a perfect choice. He perfectly embodies all the qualities that I expect from a Clark Kent and a Superman. He is incredibly charming in the role and it is clear he is enjoying it as well. Amy Adams as Lois Lane is also excellent casting as she captures the smart, feisty yet brave nature of the character. Michael Shannon as Zod is another great casting as he projects the malice and determination that the character contains in the story. There are also some other great casting for supporting characters like Kevin Costner for Jonathan Kent, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Antje Traue as Faora-Ul (who is surprisingly better than I remembered), Christopher Meloni as Col. Nathan Hardy and Russell Crowe as Jor-El. All of them give a good performance for their respective roles as well. One thing I think that Zack does well is the visuals. There is some great cinematography by Amir Mokri and some gorgeous shots. The action scenes are "visually" pleasing to look at and honestly Superman punching someone has never looked so great. The Smallville action scene is still one of the best Superman action scenes I have ever seen. I also really loved how they changed Krypton by making it feel like a completely different world with its own rules and ecosystem instead of just being a place of giant Crystals. Hans Zimmer score for Man of Steel is phenomenal with its use of choir, drums, trumpets, violins and piano. It captures the essence of what makes Superman great. It's triumphant, hopeful and inspiring that makes every scene feel epic.

The story works fine but because it's an origin story it, unfortunately, suffers from the glaring slow burn of the first half where it's just setting everything up. Due to that, there is a lack of exciting things happening post-Krypton destruction for quite a while. I also found that it was difficult to connect with much of these characters as most of them do feel one-note and lacking in any depth or optimism. Even Superman feels kind of bland as a character as there isn't much of an arc for him. I also found the romance between Superman and Lois very weak. The movie doesn't have a lot of intimate moments between the two so when they end up kissing near the end, in front of Lois's boss as well, it comes across as awkward and unearned. The third act goes into generic territory with the flashy beam in the sky and end of the world stuff that you see in many blockbusters. I also disagree with some choices Zack made, for example, the handling of Jonathan Kent's death. His death in Christopher Reeve's movie was from a heart attack and that showed that despite all of Superman's power, he can't save everyone and to me, that is a really important lesson for his character. In this movie, he dies from a tornado that Superman could have easily saved him from and it just doesn't hit the same way as the Christopher Reeve version. Plus it looks really silly in my opinion. My big issue is that the final fight scene between Superman and Zod is not as great as the Smallville fight. In Smallville, Superman is punching people but also saving people which is what I expect from Superman. However, the final fight scene has him punching people through buildings without any thought instead of attempting to take the fight outside of Metropolis. Although he kind of did by taking it into space then they went crashing back into Metropolis and caused even more damage which I still find odd to this day. The controversial neck snap is honestly something I have no issue with. It's an emotional moment for the character and is why he will have a no-kill rule in the future. However, the impact of the moment doesn't last enough to convey the importance of the scene as a minute later Superman is all fine and crashing down expensive satellites for a funny moment.

Overall, I still enjoy it even after rewatching but I am more aware of the flaws. I think it has stunning action, a beautiful score and gorgeous visuals but the writing needs a lot of work and that is why I have a big love and hate feeling towards Zack Snyder. Man of Steel is not as terrible as people gave the movie when it came out but it is still far away from the perfect Superman movie. Hopefully, Henry Cavill gets a second chance at another solo outing.

I will concede that it doesn't do a great job adapting Superman as a character; but viewed in a vacuum the film and its story are still great on their own. It's also worth noting that the most common criticism of this movie, that the film ignores the collateral damage Superman causes, is largely untrue. The Majority of the devastation we see in this film is out of his control, so there isn't a lot for him to actually owe up to in the first place.

The part that I liked the most is the music, the power of the shots and the power of the message. Darker than Marvel / Disney without a useless joke carries ambition. That is to say, Man of Steel must become the new flagship of DC Comics. It is unfortunate to see that this is not the case. When I see Captain Marvel, I'm disappointed that this Man of Steel did not take. Compared to other supermen one is led to see Crypton in the end of its history and with its history. What is disappointing is that the difference between earth and krypton is huge, but that the film only scratches the surface. After Clarck was a baby we showed krypton we have limited interest in not making us feel the 2nd version of "Superman Teen" and still we have it Durand 1 scene. This film is not perfect, but the action being well dosed allows us to have a good time.

Man of steel est le superman nouveau génération !

Seven years have passed since DC Comics’ famous and iconic superhero, Superman, was last seen on the big screen with the release of 2006’s Superman Returns starring Brandon Routh. After a long hiatus, he has finally return to the big screen with a reboot and unconnected to the previous Superman movies. This movie features the origin story of Superman and is the first instalment in the shared movie universe unofficially known as DC Extended Universe.

In the final hours of Krypton before its destruction due to destabilisation from the mining of the planet core, chief advisor to Krypton’s supreme council, Jor-El, steals the genetics codex and infuses them into the DNA of Jor-El’s new-born son, Kal-El. While this is happening, General Zod (Shannon) and his loyalist attempts a coup against the supreme council and killed Jor-El to retrieve the stolen codex. Despite Zod’s rebellion was stop and sentence to the imprisonment in the Phantom Zone, Krypton explodes after that.

Years after arrived on Earth, Kal-El is adopted by Jonathan and Martha Kent, whom they named him Clark Kent (Cavill). Clark has faced difficulties in his childhood due to his special abilities. During his adulthood, he goes on a journey for years and found an ancient Kryptonian scout ship where he finally learnt everything he needs to know from the hologram of his late biological father. Daily Planet journalist, Lois Lane (Adams), who has been investigating the ancient scout ship for some stories, is saved by Clark after she accidently triggers the ship’s security system.

After that, he dons a Kryptonian suit with the symbol of his birth family. Finally embracing his alien heritage, he becomes humanity’s hope and inspiration. Meanwhile, General Zod, who have been freed from the Phantom Zone after the destruction of Krypton many years ago, have finally discovers Clark’s location due to the reactivation of the same ancient scout ship.

In comparison between the late Christopher Reeves and Henry Cavill, both of them are great and there is no clear winner. Reeves’ version is more light-hearted and campy which is suited in the old days while Cavill’s version is more serious-orientated and realistic which more suited for the modern day era. Even Michael Shannon’s take on General Zod is totally amazing and definitely one of the best comic book villain in the big screen.

The music in this movie is totally awesome especially during the fight scenes between Superman and the villains. The combination between the music and the fights scenes creates a huge hype up and very exciting. Two thumbs up to Hans Zimmer, whose music has never ceased to impress me. As for the plot, it was good start up for an origins story.

On the downside, Superman got too much character development at the cost of supporting characters in the movie getting less character development which makes it less interesting for them to be care about. The movie also lacked some sense of humours and comedy relief moments. Nevertheless, the movie is still fun to watch. I am looking forward towards the next instalment.

Man Of Steel is undoubtedly the most realistic movie about heroes based on comics, it shows more or less how it would be if a Super Human existed, the dialogues and flashbacks are of crying so beautiful that it is, it portrays well the HQ The Last Days Of Krypton and the fights are sensational, but two problems that bothered me was Lois Lane (SHE IS EVERYWHERE IN THE MOVIE) and some problems with the script during the fight against Zod, because Superman destroyed the whole city without thinking about the people, and in the end he wants to save they ... but that does not detract from the film's brilliance.
Man Of Steel is a great movie with thoughtful thoughts around the film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Unlike most accounts, excluding the WB television series SMALLVILLE, when we first meet Clark Kent in MAN OF STEEL, he is kind of lost, trying to find his place but feeling very out of place, which is something we've all felt at some point in our lives – immediately making Clark the most lifelike he’s ever been.

The path that Clark is on here is a heavily emotional one, and more importantly about the consequences that arise from the choices that life forces you to make.

Throughout his journey in MAN OF STEEL, Clark has to reconcile the teachings from his Kryptonian father, Jor-El, and Jonathan Kent, his father from Earth, if he is to become the man that, arguably, both fathers would want him to be, in their own ways, ultimately having to find acceptance and come to terms with who he is.

This is not the colorful Superman tale of old that flies with the swelling orchestral music of John Williams, this is a more relatable figure who deals with very human issues of love, divided loyalties and family, even as he is anything but human himself.

From the vital flashbacks that take the audience across Clark’s childhood, teen years, and post high-school years, to the very controversial yet powerful scene where Superman kills Zod, every moment within this film is a fragment of the puzzle that is Clark trying to understand himself.

All these themes stand-out more powerfully than they did before – and the violence that is spread out throughout the film becomes the least exciting.

Cinematographically, Snyder opts for a handheld feel throughout the film where the camera zooms in harshly during the action-packed moments – a journalist filming the action as it happens – and softer hand-held scenes during the more intimate moments – a family member filming for a home video.

With that in mind, the film has some breathtaking visual moments.

The film is quite CGI heavy, but what super-hero film isn’t nowadays? At least the CGI in MAN OF STEEL has purpose and doesn’t stand out like it does in a certain Wakandian film.

Many, including myself, complained about the level of destruction and violence that occurred in the film but this is the consequence of war, and an allegory at Superman’s internal turmoil. Instead of uttering the phrase, “I’m being torn apart,” Snyder and co. decided to show and not tell.

War is not oversaturated heroes flying around defeating bad guys without it taking a toll on them – war is ugly, it’s devastating, and damaging both externally and internally.

During a scene that shows Clark fighting with his father Jonathan, Snyder yet again uses nature’s rage to parallel Clark’s, this time by the means of a tornado.

Clark is ordered by his father to take his mother to safety, and when Martha realizes that she’d forgotten the family dog in the truck, it is Jonathan that decides to go save it, which he does, only to be injured and lose the ability to get himself back to safety.

Clark, seeing this, moves forward to save his father using his abilities, only to have Jonathon raise his hand and subtly shake his head no, due to the countless witnesses around forcing Clark to stand by and watch his father perish.

This heart wrenching moment haunts Clark and is the basis of his identity crisis having lost the only father he’d known up until this point, and no other connection to his birth parents.

Never had we seen this amount of heaviness in a Superman film – and this is why MAN OF STEEL is as powerful as it is.

It’s all in the choices that Clark makes – the decisions that later carry consequence.

On the other side of the coin, General Zod, the film’s antagonist is one whose choice was taken from him at the time of his artificially designed pre-determined role to fill Krypton’s society.

He was designed to fight for Krypton and as such knows nothing else and cannot chose anything else to fight for nor live for.

Zod’s arc brings forth the theological aspects of the film.

His initial feud with Clark’s father is due to Jor-El being very much an advocate of free choice, which made him a criminal and an enemy of the State on Krypton.

Jor-El, an advocate of free will, sends his only son Kal-El in the hope that he will continue that philosophy and bring hope to the people of Earth.

Hans Zimmer’s musical landscape for MAN OF STEEL is another crucial layer of this film.

Zimmer brings forth the souls of the characters with the sounds of his melodies and the rage of Superman with the gusto of his percussions.

Earth, one of the final tracks on the soundtrack, is a bittersweet theme for the trinity of Clark Kent: the son/man, the hero, the heart.

Ultimately, this film is about the internal fight of a man who is trying to figure out who he is, where he belongs, and what his purpose on this planet called Earth is, and the brilliance of it is that the film ends with Clark only taking one step towards figuring it out. It's the Superman chapter we needed.

This reboot has beautiful visuals and an abundance of intense action sequences, and proves that Henry Cavill was a great casting choice as Superman.

Henry Cavill does an outstanding job as the Superman Icon. Out of all of Zack Snyder's movies, Man of Steel is the greatest.

Man of Steel while very dark for Superman is very entertaining and has a solid villain. Overall Man of Steel packs a solid punch.

Man of Steel is pretty great in my opinion. To anyone complaining it's too dark, I just reject that notion. To anyone complaining it's too dark, I just reject that notion. We've seen many serious superhero movies that were based on silly comic books (The Dark Knight, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Logan, etc.) and nobody complained about those. The "too dark" criticism is just a scapegoat excuse for not being able to properly criticize a movie.

Henry Cavill's Superman is treated like an actual human being in the 2010's. Having powers isn't easy, and suddenly finding out that you're not even from this world is just emotionally brutal.

The internal conflict is also fantastic. One father (Pa Kent) saying you need to be a good man and hide your powers from the world and another father (Jor-El) saying you need to be the savior of the human race. I love Man of Steel. Best Superman movie yet.

Great movie, too much destruction and immortal beings fighting in my opinion but still a fun movie.

MAN OF STEEL is a more realistic take on the superhero genre. This is what would happen if there actually was a superman. The cinematography is really good and visually appealing. A really good movie by Zack Snyder.

I have two things to say about that. One, that's just Zack Snyder's style. Two, not all superhero films have to be rainbows and unicorns and always happy. In the end, this is a film that is very enjoyable and is great with some room for improvement. My rating would be 7.8/10 Expand

There's some strong thematic work in here, and while those themes aren't always fully explored, it's still more interesting to watch than a lot of other superhero movies. It helps that Zack Snyder is a strong visual director. The film is stunning to look at and the action is some of the best ever in a film like this. That's not to say the movie isn't over-indulgent or misguided at times, because it is, but the things it gets right, in my mind, more than make up for the missteps. Expand

Look, this film was nowhere near as good as Nolan's The Dark Knight, but is a great flick. The real superman film I wanted. I didn't not care for original series. I thought they were lame and boring, the acting, the action, writing, the story, BLAND!!!. This is the film that should been critical acclaim and adore by fans. TheThe real superman film I wanted. I didn't not care for original series. After a second and maybe third viewing, I think this movie grew on me a bit more. Its a solid origin story that focuses on Clark's time in Krypton and General Zod's lust for power in a time of crisis. The standouts for me are Kevin Costner, Russell Crowe, Michael Shannon, Diane Lane and Henry Cavill who were all good castings and did well with their rolls. The story does a good job of being its own movie while not trying too hard to set up for future movies or installments. On the downside, I did find the film to be unnecessarily dark at times, there was also I felt a over use of CGI and not enough practical effects. Expand
