CGI was amazing but the story was too far fetched. The previous part was much better because it contained the core of the original (fairy) tale. This was just a a bad extension.

This second installment does not match the previous one. Spend a lot of time rambling and avoiding to arrive at 2 hours. VERY SLOW and in essence almost nothing happens. Angelina eats the movie, Disney really knew how to choose it very well. Michelle Pfeiffer as the human villain who wants to end all rare beings and that the world is only human does well. On the other hand we see that Maleficent finds other Dark Fairies equal to her and that reminded me a lot of How to train your dragon 3, but this one is badly told compared to the other. If the movie takes 30 minutes I would give it an 7, but with my note I am being benevolent. Expand

I'm not a fan of Disney's live action remakes. Some have been better than others but none have been transcendental or worth remembering. After all the animated classics remain classic and they're better.

Maleficent was a strange case, especially as they altered the plot in order to make her the main character and eventually the heroine.
I didn't find anything interesting in that film and personally I didn't like it but since it was a huge blockbuster, the sequel was inevitable.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil comes to repeat the formula on a larger scale. Typical in this type of sequels but like its predecessor it makes the mistake of taking itself too seriously and the dramatic overload is ridiculous.
Beyond how artificial everything feels, the film fails to make its plot useful or more interesting and honestly everything becomes boring quickly.

I had no expectations therefore I cannot declare it disappointing, simply forgettable and therefore this is definitely an option that I would not recommend.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Maybe I have entirely different expectations from everyone else, but, this movie was an abysmal flop. The story arc was patently predictable. Aside from the first half hour, Maleficent had very few lines and felt absent from much of the movie; with more silent reactions than talking The "meet the parents" dinner scene was the only redeeming exchange between characters. Instead of a children's movie, it felt like a mixture of The Lord of the Rings meets Game of Thrones, especially when the Queen Ingrith/Michelle Pfieffer (read; Cersei) character was poisoning her husband, locking innocents in a church to be poison gassed, and standing on a tower directing war. How disappointing. Expand

Elements of war that were presented did not get enough depth, instead appearing so one-dimensional. The film assures humans as the first invaders. A queen made purely evil for no apparent reason, or even ridiculous depending on where we look. The uniqueness of the main characters had to be sacrificed. Watching this is like watching a big fireball, the visuals can be beautiful but inside there is a hot-mess, unfortunately we can't possibly expect a better story to come from the ashes later. There's no bounce back from characters who have lost their uniqueness. Expand

This painstakingly derivative tale of betrayal and reconciliation through self-forgiveness had already been told by the first iteration of Maleficent in a much more poetic and contained manner, the second delivery fails at everything the first one got right and ultimately reduces the character it tried to bring to new heights to a completely unconvincing and ridiculous thing which is no longer unique or interesting. Great special effects, character designs, and acting. It’s simply magical. Michelle Pfeiffer kills it as the evil Queen Ingrith in a way that just makes you hate her guts. The only negatives I would remark on is the dramatic and abrupt change in tone after the war scene. It doesn't fit well going into the final act (seeming shoe-horned in). Especially considering the queens high treason and war crimes where she gets off basically scott-free and where her and the other's misdeeds are quickly pardoned and forgotten about. There are additional story inconsistencies regarding the crimson powders effects from the first half of the story to the second half. But all-in-all, worth watching. Expand

I liked this, but there are some caveats.

First off: this movie looks great from the effects to the creature design to the costumes. It just has this great fairy tale fantasy look to it.

Loved the world building in this. You get a lot better feel for the human society here. A new group of fairies appear in this and they are given more detail than expected with various subsets with their own costumes and customs.

Found the pacing better than the last film, which had a lot of editing from the original cut from what I hear. I also appreciated that this movie was trying to be more of a crowd-pleaser. The last film's moments of harsh emotional darkness did feel like it was trying too hard to be edgy at times. However, I admit that that it did have some great character and dialogue moments with Aurora and Maleficent that Mistress of Evil lacks.

Again, Angelina Jolie is the best part, stealing whatever scene she is in. She delivers the best emotional moments of the film. I was disappointed that the villain's henchwoman Gerda (Jenn Murray) is used sparingly. She is the competent and straight-to-the-task type. She evokes this odd uncomfortableness and does a lot with very few lines of dialogue.

The movie's biggest problem is that it's like Tron Legacy in that the director/screenwriters found ways to depict murders without graphic violence and they felt that that justified them going crazy with them. I found the amount of death went farther than it needed for a family film. To compound the matter, the rushed feel-good ending really feels in conflict with the events that took place before it.

The movie juggles way too many characters. The creators really didn't know what to do with Maleficent's sidekick Diaval (Sam Riley). Michelle Pfeiffer's duplicitous Queen Ingrith's scene time could've been cut. She was an okay villain who I think could've been stronger if her characteristics hadn't gotten old after a while. Also, Maleficent, the star of the film, is only in it half the time.

Despite these legitimate flaws, I still enjoyed myself. This movie is basically fantasy porn. Just understand that this is one of those cases where you're willing to shut your brain off.

The technical aspects of the movie are great. It is a spectacle for the eyes. I guess that's its main reason for existence - selling 3D movie tickets, and selling merchandise to children.
I find it somewhat disappointing, because there was the potential for a good story here. If children were the main target audience, the story could've been simpler. Instead, I felt like I watched a mish-mash of different stories and characters, all somehow exploiting a Disney's established franchise. It's confused and confusing.
So, we got Mad queen Cersei; a weak king; a weaker prince; a useless, weak princess (why?); General Black Man; Maleficent Targaryen; comedic relief Grima Wormtongue; Thor's Heimdall mixed with Gandhi; Bird man William Wallace; the Avatar creatures, but with less blue, and more wings; Sonic's useless hedgehog niece; and finally, perhaps the best character: Lesbian psychopath murderer.
Why are they all in the same movie, and why is this a Lord of the Rings war meets Game of Thrones scheming meets Dances with Wolves? I don't know. I don't think the writers know. However, it's quite pleasing to look at, and Angelina Jolie portrays the part of Maleficent really well.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Since the so-called "critics" are being biased, i'll be biased too and give it a 10. Ideally it would've been a solid 8. Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil reminds us how Maleficent will always be mistreated for just being a horned-winged scary looking fairy and how her heart is bigger than what many people would think it is. Michelle Pfeifer/Queen Ingrith was the strong antagonist figure to the strong Maleficent, something the first film lacked. Also, Elle/Aurora's acting skills have developed over the course of the years. We also get to see Maleficent's origin and why she's the extra-ordinary powers that her kind doesn't posses. Expand

It's definitely darker and more brutal than expected and also much better directed. Good camera work, elaborate costumes and stunning set pieces one after the other. The CGI looks amazing too showing this is truly an expensive and well crafted movie rich in details and visual beauty. The script doesn't offer an original and groundbreaking story but it's well written with some witty dialogues and a focused narrative that's easy to follow. While the phoned twists might appear naive for adults I am sure kids will enjoy this elegant film about self discovery, family, war, loss, friendship, love, hate and everything in between. Elle as Aurora has one intense scene where she is showing some skills as an acretess but overall gives a flat performance yet she is never the key protagonist of the story so in the end she seems an OK choice to portray an innocent and naive girl with a pure heart. She is still very likeable and never gets on your nerves as many Disney princesses. The Prince of the other hand is ridiculous. The two protagonists here are Angie and Michelle, both stunningly beautiful and immensely talented and good in their roles. Queen Ingrid is evil and her story perfectly justifies the first movie and the original story of The Sleeping Beauty. Maleficent goes through a self discovery journey rising above all. The movie is a good spectacle, aesthetically flawless, with great characters and a convincing plot. It's not a masterpiece but a very good sequel and a fun night out at the theatre. IMAX or Laser 4K is recommended. The UHD Blu Ray seems a must given the high number of beautiful Angelina close ups, HDR and Dolby Vision will make the movie pop so nicely. Recommended. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Not a 10, but I give it an 8.5/10.
I love the performances, besides the mediocre actor for Philip, I love the main and supporting characters, mainly Maleficent, Aurora, Ingrith, Diaval, Conall, Borra, Philip, Gerda, and John.
The first act is a nice set up for the film that introduces all of these new characters with this nice and happy tone, before the intense dinner scene.
The second act explores Maleficent's species and gives more tension between Ingrith and Aurora. So now it's the humans of Ulstead, creatures of the Moors, and the Dark Fey colony. I love it.
The third act is this epic war that is quite violent and entertaining.

I can see why some people didn't like it, but I still enjoy it. Especially when compared to the mediocre 2014 film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well..this was ...umm... a tough choice betweem "8" and "9". My age rating for this movie is 12 +. Now...the fact of focusing on Aurora's "journey" over a fake wedding that is actually a trap created by the Evil Queen instead of Maleficent herself...The plot is kinda great...The soundtrack is epic... and the villain is actually the third meanest Villain i ever saw in Disney Movies (After Frollo and Scar)...The Finale was great and kinda funny with the queen after an epic final battle turns to a goat... The last one was the thing that made me give a 9... Finally, the cast is perfect and Angelina Jolie reprises her role as Maleficent. Expand

¡Es una película fantástica! Disney se arriesga a tomar técnicas actuales, brinda un poco de aventura y originalidad. Sin duda alguna Angelina es perfecta en su papel.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is my 3rd favorite Disney movie of 2019, one of my top 10 favorite movies of 2019, one of my top 10 favorite Disney movies of all time, and one of my favorite movies of all time. Angelina Jolie's performance as Maleficent was phenomenal just like in the first one, definitely one of her best roles of all time. The supporting cast gave outstanding performances especially Elle Fanning, Michelle Pfeiffer, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Ed Skrein, Sam Riley, Harris Dickinson, Warwick Davis, Robert Lindsay, Imelda Staunton, Lesley Manville, Juno Temple, and David Gyasi. The costumes were Magnificent especially the ones wore by Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sam Riley, Miyavi, Ed Skrein, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Judi Shekoni, Robert Lindsay, and Harris Dickinson. The makeup and hairstyling was stupendous especially on Angelina Jolie, Ed Skrein, Warwick Davis, Miyavi, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michelle Pfeiffer, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Harris Dickinson, Judi Shekoni, Jenn Murray, and Robert Lindsay. The visual effects were spectacular, beautiful, and awesome especially Maleficent and the other fairies flying, the tree creatures, and all of the other magical creatures and plants. The music was excellent especially Bebe Rexha's original song "You Can't Stop the Girl." The screenplay was superb. The story and plot were great. This was a A+ movie. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After having watched the trailer, I was in no hurry to watch the second movie of this series. I did enjoy the first movie, but the trailer just did not look all that interesting. Evil queen tries to steal Beastie from Maleficent, she goes postal and destroys the kingdom. In actuality, what I got was far more than I expected. Maleficent 2 is a story with interesting characters and dynamics which really having you investing emotion into them. The climax of the conflict was amazing, far better than I could have hoped for. Living in an American culture where sniveling reprobates think they have power when they are placated with safe spaces to coddle their fragile emotions, I enjoyed a movie which mirrors reality. Maleficent has the power to wipe the evil queen and all human kind in the neighboring civilization from the face of the Earth, yet her humanity allows them to continue existing. True power is having the ability and reason to destroy utterly and choosing not to do so. I felt like the ending was the best it could have been. Between the dichotomy within the factions of the dark Faye to the conflict within the human ranks to the uncertainty of how severe Maleficent’s wrath would express itself, I found myself pondering the outcome from all the angles because the story was interesting and well crafted.
All in all, this movie was superior to the first especially if you can suspend disbelief and invest your emotions into thinking of the conflict from all sides. I would highly recommend watching this movie if you watched the first.

Maleficent 2 is marginally better than the original, as I appreciate the original storyline as opposed to another rehash of a Disney classic. I use the word marginally though because again it's just a CGI mess of a film.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

Despite her service, the neighboring kingdom of Ulstead, home to Prince Phillip, deems Maleficent a villain, and while Phillip's father King John wishes for peace, his mother Queen Ingrith has been secretly preparing for war; in the hidden areas of the castle, workers make weapons and ammunition out of iron, deadly to all fairies. Diaval, Maleficent's raven and confidante, overhears Phillip proposing to Aurora, and tells Maleficent. While she advises against the union, Aurora vows to prove her wrong.
Phillip's parents host an intimate dinner, having invited Aurora, Maleficent, and Diaval. Maleficent maintains her composure as Ingrith taunts her throughout the evening by repeating the inaccurate story that has made the humans believe her to be evil: the story of Maleficent's sleeping curse on Aurora is only half the truth, because no one has ever been told the whole truth about her loving Aurora and sacrificing herself to lift the curse. Ingrith alludes to Stefan's death as murder, and openly claims Maleficent killed two human fairy poachers last seen near the Moors. Maleficent responds with equal iciness that humans have been kidnapping fairies, and hints that she believes the order to do it comes from the King or Queen.
When Ingrith dismisses Maleficent's maternal bond with Aurora and claims that the marriage will make Ingrith her real mother, Maleficent reacts by angrily unleashing a burst of magical energy. John suddenly faints, and Ingrith accuses Maleficent of cursing him, which Maleficent denies to a disbelieving Aurora. Phillip urges his mother to try and awaken John with a kiss. Ingrith demurs, and her weak attempt fails because she does not love her husband – especially for their differing views on peace and war.
As Maleficent flees the castle, Ingrith's right-hand, Gerda, shoots Maleficent with an iron bullet. Wounded, Maleficent falls into the ocean, only to be rescued by a mysterious winged creature. She awakens in a cavern where fairies like herself have been in hiding. Among them is Conall, their peaceful leader who saved Maleficent, and Borra, a warlike fairy who favors open conflict with humans, who killed the poachers near the Moors. Maleficent is among the last creatures known as the Dark Fey, powerful fairies forced into hiding and nearly driven extinct by human oppression. She is also the last descendant from the Phoenix, an ancient and powerful Dark Fey ancestor. She needs to pass through certain stages in order to harbor her full potential. When she brought up a human, she cleared the initial stages and Conall insists on forgiving Aurora in order to gain her final phoenix stage, but Maleficient disagrees. Because Maleficent's magic is so powerful, Conall and Borra believe she is instrumental in ending the conflict with humans, either by peace or war.
Meanwhile, the magical denizens of the Moors are invited to the royal wedding, but Aurora grows disillusioned with being an Ulstead noblewoman. Later, Conall sacrifices himself to save Maleficent again during a human attack.
At Ingrith's command, Gerda unleashes the deadly crimson powder by playing the chapel's organ. The fairy Flittle selflessly sacrifices herself to save everyone as a last resort by clogging the organ, rendering it unplayable, while her friends Knotgrass and Thistlewit cause Gerda to fall to her death. The Dark Fey launch an assault on Ulstead but the palace soldiers begin massacring them until Maleficent, channeling her Phoenix power, joins the battle. She nearly kills Ingrith but Aurora appeals to Maleficent's humanity to spare her, and declares that Maleficent is her only mother. With Maleficent distracted, Ingrith fires her crossbow. Maleficent saves Aurora, but is struck by the arrow, dissolving into ashes. Devastated, Aurora grieves for Maleficent, but after Aurora's tears fall on the ashes, Maleficent attains her phoenix stage.
Horrified and infuriated, Ingrith throws Aurora off the tower to kill her, prompting Maleficent to rescue her again. Phillip forges peace between the fairies and humans and the Ulstead soldiers stand down. Maleficent reverts to her fairy form and finally gives Aurora and Phillip her blessing, realizing they belong together. Lickspittle decides to stop following Ingrith's orders and gives Maleficent the spindle used to curse John and, previously, Aurora. Maleficent destroys the spindle and its curse, awakening John from his slumber. As she flees, Ingrith is stopped and captured by Borra and the other Dark Fey. As punishment for her crimes, she is transformed into a goat by Maleficent until she can accept the peace between the two people.
After Aurora and Philip wed, Maleficent returns to the Moors with the other Dark Fey, teaching the young fairies to fly. She promises to return for Aurora and Philip's future child's christening.

I put it on solely in the name of seeing every Oscar-nominated film and it was slightly better than expected. Some of the creature designs were cool and it only dragged during a drawn out epilogue wedding. Otherwise, it just left no impression on me. The jumpy editing, derpy music, and chonky dialogue made it more appealing to make fun of with Lauren than to just watch. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Five years after a good origin movie, Maleficent 2 is here to leave a bitter taste. In the first few minutes, it looks promising, but then, the script abandons everything. It's an unnecessary sequel. Michelle Pfeiffer plays a not-so-scary villain. Any sad scene, particularly Conall's death scene, is just boring. Conall was presented for a few minutes and that was not necessary to build a good character, for the audience to feel the pain of his death. Jenn Murray can't really show who she really is, as her character just looks like a robot. And worst of all. The film is named after Maleficent and the title character is just a drag on the script, which gives the spotlight to Aurora, a weak character, who alongside the Prince, another weak character, makes the main core plummet.
