Terrific story about a very exciting event and an extremely capable woman, but the movie just seemed to me like a boring collection of fuzzy at-sea short takes, and Twitter length interviews. Almost like a puff piece for Tracy Edwards. WhenTerrific story about a very exciting event and an extremely capable woman, but the movie just seemed to me like a boring collection of fuzzy at-sea short takes, and Twitter length interviews. Almost like a puff piece for Tracy Edwards. When her boat finished the race at Southampton, accompanied by a huge flotilla of fans, I assumed she did quite well in the race. In fact she finished 18th out of the 21 boats that finished the race, and about 40 days behind the raw time winner. The movie gave the impression that throughout the race Maiden was contending for the lead. All the other boats were treated like chopped liver. (Not a spoiler because the movie never goes into this, but Wikipedia does.)

Even as a documentary, there should be a better way to present an exciting sea story other than a collection bland eye witness comments by a middle aged group of nice people.

"Maiden" is a documentary directed by Alex Holmes which tells the story
of Tracy Edwards, a 24 year old sailing vessel cook who, in 1989, together with
her female companions, skippered the first all female crew to compete in the
Whitbread Sail Around the World contest. More than the story of a sailing
contest, it is a testament to the tenacity and vision of this young girl who, despite
the chauvenism of the sailing community, achieved her goal and realized
her dream. This is film that every young woman should see and appreciate
for it demonstrates that dreams can become reality in spite of the prejudices
of a male dominated society and the obstacles in general that every dreamer
must inevitably encounter. Although the film could just as well have been
exhibited in a much shorter version, the viewer nevertheless experiences and
understands what these adventurous ladies had to encounter and how meaningful
what they accomplished meant to all womanhood far and beyond
the contest they participated in. I give the film an 8 for it is as inspirational
as it is entertaining.

Although a little slow at the outset, this inspiring and entertaining documentary about the first all-female crew to participate in the round-the-world Whitbread yachting race is more than just a laudatory exercise in taking on the untried.Although a little slow at the outset, this inspiring and entertaining documentary about the first all-female crew to participate in the round-the-world Whitbread yachting race is more than just a laudatory exercise in taking on the untried. It's also an engaging, beautifully photographed adventure saga about an arduous task that supremely tests one's wits and endurance, regardless of gender or any other defining characteristic. A riveting, spellbinding tale that often has an edge-of-your-seat quality about it, quite rare for a documentary. See it and be both enlightened and entertained. Expand

My movie-of-the year (so far). There are some excellent movies that chronicle around-the-world voyages, including the excellent Deep Water, but this on is special in so many respects. I was the only person in my theater (late show), but I was laughing, cheering, and there were tears in my eyes at several points. When a movie does that to you, you're compelled to spread the word. Kudos to the director, but even bigger praise to Tracy Edwards her VERY talented crew. Expand

Sometimes you go to a film you know nothing about because it’s a hot day and an adventurous local cinema is showing it. I was floored. This documentary, about the first ever all-female crew to enter the Whitbread Round the World sailing raceSometimes you go to a film you know nothing about because it’s a hot day and an adventurous local cinema is showing it. I was floored. This documentary, about the first ever all-female crew to enter the Whitbread Round the World sailing race in 1989, was nothing short of incredible. First of all, I knew nothing about the race or sailing, so for me the suspense was constant, even though I figured no one would make a documentary about a loser. Thanks to beautifully spaced excellent short interviews with family and friends and loads of actual on-board race footage, the film was riveting. Highly recommended. Expand

This is a great film for any young woman to see, who has been told she’s not strong enough, not good enough, and not smart enough and will not take no for an answer.

This was the fastest 90 minutes of the year. Something about bravery in the face of incredible odds, always makes me cry. This story was great, the doubts everyone faced, the girls had to overcome so much.

Despite half of it being a talking head documentary, which I'm not for, the combination of the powerful women telling their story with the images shot in the eighties of the race is absolutely stunning. You cheer them on because they're thereDespite half of it being a talking head documentary, which I'm not for, the combination of the powerful women telling their story with the images shot in the eighties of the race is absolutely stunning. You cheer them on because they're there to set the trademark for all women after them, opening a door for them for opportunities. These girls are saying now again that if you listen to what people tell you you can't do, human kind would not have been great at all. And that is a strong message that I will take to heart. Expand

This documentary was riveting! It managed to blend historical footage with present day commentary seamlessly. It left me wanting to do more research.
