I am good with love who you want, but let a kids movie be just that. Pretty simple concept. Another one bites the dust for woke Disney/Pixar.

Me parece horrible lo de querer meter a la fuerza el contenido LGBT, no es necesario, solo para ganar más público, me pareció vergonzoso, Disney no vela por las familias.

There is a lot of explanation about getting the concept across, and many people say that is where the movie is struggling. That isn't true in my opinion. As an avid fan of toy story anything that has to do with Buzz is very exciting, but instead of making an action Sci-fi movie about Buzz the hero; he is turned into the villain. Hero movies are fun. This movie is not fun. Expand

.
Buzz initial issue is to deal with duty at the expense of his own personal relations, which the movie defends it IS life itself. That is an interesting motive, but is tossed aside quickly and replaced just with "your excelence made you arrogant, you need to correct that". Izzy is presented as his possible answer, "we are not good yet, but we can learn". At some point, he is almost forced to remember he was not always excelent and he explains it. If we could watch that instead of listen, that could lead to a great storyline if followed, but is washed away.
Buzz final choice which leads to victory against the villain, giving up the one thing he had spend all his life persuing was presented as just a mere detail on an action scene.
Izzy also has an interesting issue with space but the movie just pass over her resulotion like it was not a big deal at all, just as Buzz resolutions.

That plant vine presented at the start is pointless. Granny and that other guy are useless. Sox was a nice source of good jokes but also used as an all purpuse plot story solution regarding the tech mumble jumble.

It feels like all the effort was placed on the start of the movie, that it was carefully planned, Buzz's used as a tool to present his friend's life going on and then they realized there was an hour of movie yet to make.

'Lightyear,' maybe Pixar's most ambitious film since 'Toy Story 4' is kind of dull. The themes about letting the past go and learning to live with your mistakes fit very well into Buzz's development as a character, but the overall story is boring, especially in the middle section. ;) Expand

The artificial intelligence cat will surely sell, his scenes are good. It has nothing to do with the Toy Story universe. At the beginning there is a text that literally says "In 1995 Andy bought a toy from his favorite movie. This is that movie." A love letter to science fiction movies set in space. I liked that they got out of the usual conventional mold and did something more serious and scientific, something for adults, and I applaud them for that; maybe children will be bored or will not understand, although it is still for them. It has flaws, it lacks emotion and epicity, they leave it aside for focusing on the action; It also has very annoying, irritating characters that make you want to kill them. Expand

The animation is always up to the task, but the screenplay could have used more work. My main frustration with the film is the ‘fool’ character introduced in the second half who continually makes terrible mistakes that nearly get the entire team killed. If this had happened once I would have blown it off as character-building comic relief, but it happens so often that the entire plot comes to rely on it for inciting incident. Also this character offers a lot of sarcastic/bumbling comic relief that wasn’t necessary in a film that was doing fine in the first half with a more story driven, sincere approach to humor (see: Sox). All that said, I do like the concept of the film and appreciate the hard work that went into it and still feel there is a lot to like here. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Buzz is my favorite fictional character of all time. So I was very excited to get back in a theater after a couple years and watch this film. It was underwhelming, to say the least. In a nutshell, it left me craving to hear Tim Allen voice the iconic character again. I’m a Gen-Z’er, so I understand Chris Evans *might have broader appeal, however his voice just doesn’t have the crispness and maturity as the original. Some of the side characters were interesting, but the core characters like Buzz and Zurg were underwhelming, and I thought the Zurg reveal was a disappointing decision. It seems to me that the film tried to do too much rather than just tell a story. Visuals are nice, just wish there were more elements that compliment the Toy Story films. Expand

"Lightyear" was... Mid. It just feels like your basic run-of-the-mill space adventure movie. You could remove any elements of "Toy Story" and the character Buzz Lightyear, and the movie would still work.

On top of that, there’s not a whole lot going on in this movie: Everyone is just kind of shuffling around until the last third of the film and it undercuts all the things it's trying to do/say. It tries too hard to look realistic in it's animation when it could have gone for a more stylized approach (this movie could have taken notes from "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" in that department).

The cat character was kinda fun but that’s to be expected from the usual silly/quirky character that is almost always included in Disney-Pixar movies. If you have young kids, they will probably like this movie, just make sure your phones light setting is low so you don’t disturb others when you decide to turn it on to kill time 5/10

Expand

The graphicalA spinoff of a towering franchise that exceeded my modest expectations. It could just be me, but I get the impression that, in an absolute sense, movies today really are better than those we have understandable nostalgia for. The graphical experience being leaps and bounds better goes without saying. But just as importantly, writers and directors can’t just do more of the same — they have to take every well-worn trope and somehow put a fresh spin on them, or invent new ones altogether. And I swear the dialogue is getting more realistic and dynamic, with characters breaking their own train of thought (or others’ train of thought); the arguments seem so much more raw and genuine, and it’s harder to visualize voice actors just reading off pieces of paper.

Oh: and even though I was waiting for it, I missed the kiss. Probably blinked or turned my head for a moment — it was so brief. I especially like how Commander Hawthorn and her wife were depicted as just another ordinary family, seen raising their children and then grandchildren in an brief, supercut sequence in which Lightyear repeatedly returns to visit at the end of each of his time-dilated journeys around the local star. I struggle to see how those without an agenda coming in would see it as age-inappropriate.

A visually phenomenal animated movie. Sox is my new favorite animated movie character since BB-8. Chris Evans did a great job portraying Buzz and Zurg was the definition of intimidating.

Chris Evans voices the Space Ranger as he ventures on an intergalactic mission that leaves him and his crew stranded on a strange planet. The story follows relatively typical space challenges, so it's up to the writing and characters to set it apart. The writing is seldom clever or original and the characters are scrappy but not really funny (with the exception of the robot cat Sox voiced by Peter Sohn). The outer space animation and sci-fi visuals are grand and attractive. Those expecting to see the original franchise echoed in this origin story will not find the stylized style or rollocking humor of those classics. It's an acceptable adventure for kids that lacks much of the charm of its predecessors. NOTE: There's been some uproar over the depiction of a lesbian couple, but I applaud Pixar for taking the stand for normality. Expand

A Buzz Lightyear film that wasn’t really a Buzz Lightyear film.

While the animation and effects were very impressive, the storytelling fell through in a major way. They were definitely able to take some elements from the Toy Story series and transition it to this film to create parallels between the toy Buzz and the “real” Buzz, yet the overall story heavily derails from what Buzz at his core is; an action hero.

Instead of the story being about a grand adventure or stopping a universe-ending evil like Zurg, the story instead resorts to being an overly drawn out version of the “Up” opening sequence. It may have worked with different setups and characters, but not with a character that’s supposed to be an action hero. I get that this film was heavily inspired by the pandemic; with the shutdowns, time moving differently, and everything seemingly passing by as if it never happened, and that can make for a good story. They just chose the wrong setting for it in my opinion.

This however feels like it actually should have been released on Disney+. Very disappointing in my eyes but it’s not as bad as some people claim it is. It’s got elements of the Pixar charm with a VERY fun side character in Sox. Sox is honestly my favorite part of the movie and the only character that made me laugh when the movie wanted me to laugh plus the animation here is great. The film looks gorgeous the entire time especially the space scenes. While I do miss Tim Allen as Buzz, Chris Evans does do a good job at making the character feel similar but adding his own charm to it. None of the performances here are bad but the characters other than Buzz aren’t very good. They have very little to almost no character development and are kind of just blank slates standing around waiting for development that just never comes. I can only name maybe one slight personality trait for the side characters but other than that, I couldn’t tell you what their goals or motivations are. The only side character that I liked is written out at the beginning of the movie after a great little fast forward in time scene. The story and villain are honestly the weakest parts for me. The story is surprisingly bland and basic for Pixar standards. It feels half baked and half formed. The foundations are there but the actual structure itself is weak and wobbly. The villain goes into spoiler territory so I won’t say much but it’s BAD. The villain honestly sucks and the reveal about the villain is just the worst. We don’t get any development with the villain and they are just there at points even though they are screaming that they are important. Even the music from the legend Michael Giacchino feels underwhelming as well. Honestly, you can probably pass on this as this doesn’t really contribute that much to the Toy Story franchise at large. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It Didn't Feel Like A Buzz Lightyear Movie.

The Buzz in this movie doesn't resemble the character in the Toy Story Movies and BLoSC show in characterization. But my main gripes are in the abandonment of continuity. Buzz is introduced in the original Toy Story movie saying "I protect the Galaxy from the Evil Emperor Zurg, sworn enemy of the Galactic Alliance!", which this movie doesn't line up with AT ALL. And Toy Story 2 establishes Zurg as Buzz's father, as a narrative pastiche, which again, is abandoned. And none of the movie is in line with the canon established by Buzz Lightyear of Star Command.

It was a well-executed fan-fiction, but not even close to resembling what I (or, I'd wager /most/ BLoSC fans) wanted. If you switch out the names and changed Buzz's face, it would be... fine. As a standalone sci-fi movie, it was watchable.

But my disappointment outweighs that by a lot.

For me at least, the conceit that the movie was released in 1993 is where it falls apart since it relies on science fiction tropes that evolved more recently regarding time travel (especially in a post-Back to the Future world). Lightyear has a big dilemma on its hands. First, because of the people who will judge it for Toy Story, and second, because of the people who will judge it for Pixar. And the film won't do well on either of those fronts.

And one way or another it can be confusing to know what this film is really about - Is it about the toy? Or is it about the reason the toy exists?
Beyond that conundrum - that gets clarified in the first seconds - what remains is an entertaining and poignant film that has the Pixar stamp of superb animation, but which unfortunately also seems to be restrained and pressured not to push the limits of ambition and remain at a point where it fails to elevate the film beyond the ordinary.

Unsurprisingly, the first Pixar film to hit theatres since Onward, after the pandemic worst moments, is one that was clearly made with the genuine intention of making a lot of money from a very recognizable character, but as I said, that's also a double-edged sword that exerts enormous pressure on a film that's good and genuinely fun, but is up against the anticipation of an audience that expects it to be a masterpiece.

What is not a problem is the lesbian kiss scene. For example: It was no problem approx 20 years ago in Buffy and I enjoyed the sweet love story of Willow and Tara. For itself it is a good movie but nowhere near the best Pixar movies. As sidenote I should remark that many other people have a separate rating scale exclusively for Pixar movies. An 8/10 on the normal scale is a weak movie or even (close to) a disaster on the Pixar scale. It is the backstory of Buzz Lightyear and as I said not related to the Toy Story movies or TV show. He and his crew are on an exploring space mission to a far away habitable planet. However not everything goes as planned and so starts the adventure. I am vague here because of spoilers. The story is fine for me but not that remarkable and unique. I have seen similar heroes journeys and also some parts are foreseeable. It might sound too negative as it is by far no misstep except maybe of Pixar scale but this is up to others to decide as I do not use it. It is entertaining enough to be rated as good movie and it is enjoyable. It just does not wow me like the better animated movies or past Pixar movies. The animations are top notch as expected and even critics of the movie should agree in this regard. There are no missteps and I like the style of the movie. The voice actors are good and deliver their roles well. I freely admit that Tim Allen is a better Buzz than Chris Evans even as huge Captain America movie fan. However he is neither incompetent nor bad. I say the whole cast does a good job. Overall I think my introduction is also a fine description. While it is not a bad movie it is not “Toy Story 5” or the animated TV show and Pixar while being not garbage is a bit away from its former glory. It is good but not truly amazing. I give a 6.5/10. It is a product for young adult audience, and so plot and moral can be a little predictable...but it is fun to watch for adult also.
I liked that most of the technology in this movie are somewhat retro futuristic, like it was made in the late 90's.
It reminds me of a "typical" sci-fi movie of that era for tv, and it is a good, nostalgic, feeling.
I didn't have much expectation (in my country it didn't recive much attention) and it suprise me.
