This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was really hyped for this film as the trailer looked good and James Wan produced it, but it turned out to be a boring, unbelievable mess with bad acting, bad dialogue and has a very lazy and disappointing climax. The core concept, that of a ghost which only appears in the dark, should have provided a lot more possibilities for frights, but the way it was handled, specifically, the way the ghost is introduced and seen so quickly, in the first few minutes of the film, means there's no real buildup or suspense. The only real mystery left is who the heck the ghost is/was, which turns out to be some poor disabled girl who can't be in the sunlight and everyone just calls her 'evil' because her skin is black, which means she probably just decides she may as well be evil. Then, her only friend (who also wants rid of her) decides to blow her own brains out as she's just part of her psychosis anyway. Which begs the question, was she real or wasn't she? I'm not sure even the Director knows or cares. No likeable characters, just another waste of time and money. Expand

I fell for the hype and decided that it may be worth a look-see but i didn't get scared or startled once. It's rather short and the lore isn't explorer enough, ie: how can an entity exist on it's own on the sole basis of a material form (mom) being alive. The lead actress (Teresa Palmer) isn't good at acting...I didn't know who she was before going in and later read she was discovered working at a mall in Australia and cast next day without an audition (2005ish). And that explains a lot. If you want an eerie film that has the potential to actually give you a fright, go watch It follows. Expand

When I first saw the trailer for this before The Conjuring 2 I thought it was one of those joke ads to get you to turn your phone off. That's what it should have been. That's what it should have been. Think of every ghost story horror cliche because this movie has them all. There is next to no plot or character development and no original ideas. On top of all that the two main characters were played by no name actors and with good reason. The acting is as forced and wooden as the script is shallow.

Basically everything that the Conjuring 2 did right (engaging characters, subverting the audience's expectations, humor, stylish cinematography, and jump scares that were earned) well.... this does the exact opposite. It takes itself way too seriously, and lacks anything that could be called better than mediocre. I did not hear one person in the audience, screech, shudder or cower throughout the entire film. The best thing about this movie is the short run time.

I should have just kept waiting until i forgot about it.

The idea of this movie is great, the execution is terrible.
No jump scares, hardly any background story on why the 'girl' is there or how it happened.
No frightening moments that any horror should have, it was just thrown together and it was terrible.
I miss the days of good horror movies :(

There was absolutely no substance to this movie. For those looking for a few, fairly predictable jump-scares, look no further. Una historia bastante fácil de olvidar y de distraerse, el miedo es nulo. Una idea muy original tirada a la basura.

A Story too easy to forget and get distract, the fear is null. A very original idea throw on the trash.

Almost no suspense, too explicit to elicit real fear. Nothing is really scary, you can usually guess what's gonna happen from miles away. Opt instead for Sinister, or The Conjuring 1/2.

Sandberg's film has empty threat, stake, emotion, impact on us, its exhausted audience, that cannot wait for the light to turn on and the screen to turn off.

Lights Out

The co-writer and director David F. Sandberg has nothing to offer. And he is inviting us. This daring is neither admirable nor childish enough by us to reject it. We cannot, I cannot just say NO to the small wonders that Sandberg in its own bumps and trumps, can display. Now, is that all a coincidence or a genuine artistry taking place. What we do know for sure, is that this is an empty call. It is the part where the makers are bluffing. But even in a bluff, after a point, there is something that is revealed. Good or bad. In here, the void is dangerously arrogant. It is not going to and will not succumb to any obligatory notes of the film. Often this bold take could be beneficial but here it is peddled to nowhere. I would gladly stand up on the stage that it is not their fault, they didn't have any answers. But in haters' defense, there wasn't any question. First of all the genre isn't respected itself. It claims to be of horror and functions- or does not function- like a psychological drama. Psychological drama? Sure, why not. I'll take that as well. But when it comes the time for it to be that, it directs towards the sci-fi aspects of the storyline. There is no coherence on where the boundary is. What is white and what is black. What is in and what is out. What is light and what is dark. And now you can understand my annoyance when the warning sign, the title on the poster screams, Lights Out.

Why short films should remain short films. Whether evil spirits are ghosts or monsters, it is not very scary and lacks narrative.
