Some scenes that weren't in prev sci-fis before. Hired scientists to consult on actual science, thus helping realism. I love the new alien! *chuckle*

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Watching this movie on Netflix, and a half hour into it I can tell it's bad. Almost forty minutes in Ryan Reynolds character dies. Life looks like it wants to be an independent space alien film, but all it is is a really bad B movie that happens to have two A list stars in it: Jake Gyllenhaal and Reynolds; and a rising star: Rebecca Ferguson. They're not enough to save this boring mess. I'll be surprised if I make it to the end. It looks like I'm going to have to turn it off. I have never done that before. 51 minutes into it this movie is taking itself way too seriously. It's a space alien movie for crying out loud; and there was absolutely no character development whatsoever before the alien started to take over. How am I suppose to care about the characters when I know nothing about them? The people who made this movie don't know what the hell they are doing. 57 minutes into the movie I'm utterly bored. Life makes Prometheus and Alien Covenant look like masterpieces; and Prometheus was a very frustrating movie but at least it had it's entertaining moments. Alien Covenant is better then Prometheus. It's more entertaining; but Katherine Waterston was only somewhat better then Noomi Rapace was in Prometheus. Rebecca Ferguson is in the wrong alien movie. She would've been much better in Ridley Scott's alien movies then in Life. Life makes Jake Gyllenhaal seem boring. I didn't think that was possible. 103 minutes into the movie, I'm going to try and stick it out, but hands down this is the worst alien movie I've ever seen. I would be giving it a 0 if it didn't have Reynolds, Ferguson and Gyllenhaal in it. They deserve to be in a much better movie. Expand

It's best to see Life with zero expectations and knowing very little about the premise (e.g. don't watch the trailer). A tense thrill-ride with an excellent acting assemble.

This could have been a great movie. Gyllenhaal is not a astronaut, he is too stupid for that role. But also other flaws are holding this movie down. But I love scifi movies so it is a 7.3/10.

Basically,This movie starts out somewhat realistically like Gravity but quickly descends into dumb slasher-horror territory. The alien's ability is portrayed inconsistently from predictable organism to impossibly-invulnerable adamantium. Basically, it's always just as powerful as it needs to be to advance the story. The crew's decisions also get remarkably irrational and unrealistic over time. Instead of prioritizing their main objective of quarantine, they keep screwing up over and over, risking everything to save a single teammate who's already as good as dead. It's as if their entire training or flight/fight instinct never kicked in. They act more like fall guys in a B-rated horror flick than like scientists. I would've liked to watch something more similar to the "Kodoku Experiment" where crew and alien are more consistently intelligent throughout the story. Expand

Great cast for sci-fi horror; well shot and enjoyable film yet somehow nothing stands out, never quite puts its own stamp on this tired genre... Reminds me of a lesser take of the thing 1982... Worth watching!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Life may have seemed like the next Alien movie for a new generation, but the trailer was very misleading, first of all Ryan Reynolds was only in like 10 or 15 minutes of the movie, and the plot turned into a survival thriller. At least it had an interesting story, characters, outstanding special effects and a new original alien. But still, the movie was kind of predictable and didn't really have that terror feel, and an extremely predictable plot and twist ending where the alien is still alive. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I want to honor the work of many people with a review that is more than one word. However, the most honest review I can leave for this movie is, "meh."

It has become an overly saccharine trend to pepper genre films with nods to previous popular films of said genre. Life starts with a number of dark, yet genre obvious, one line foreshadowings of things to come. This I knew meant I was either in for a well scripted ride or a plunge in to re-creation as opposed to genuine creation.

This film was plagued with poorly veiled failures on the part of its characters that led to *spoiler* an alien life form running rampant on the ISS. For an audience to willfully suspend its disbelief the illusion spun must be well thought through. There were a number of events that happened in Life that were simply silly, to say the least, that led to Calvin's eventual domination; the least of which is the crews apparent unwillingness to sacrifice itself to save all life on earth.

I imagine if an alien life form were to share the same airspace with the crew aboard a space station they would likely never return to earth until those on earth were able to study the life they had come in contact with and determine whether or not they were contaminated and thus safe or not to return. The fact that the crew, including the crew-member who's job it was to make sure that the alien lifeform stayed quarantined, acted as though there was a chance they would return once the alien had breached containment was too obvious a plot flaw to ignore. On the positive the creature was compelling and filmed in an ominous and intelligent manner. There were redeeming qualities to this film.

However, at the end I genuinely had to ask myself if I wanted those hours of my life back for other things. I have never asked myself that before, perhaps it is because it is so common a comment used in negative reviews. I do not want those hours back. However, I do want films to be better made.

If I were so lucky to have someone involved in this film read my review I would simply ask that they not underestimate the intelligence of their audience and consult on ever major plot point they incorporate into their film. If an alien breaches containment in a film which paints itself in steal blue tones of international scientific collaboration that breaking of containment must be worth of said tones.

The fear of the unknown is a horror device that works on so many occasions, as further demonstrated in Life. While the film has its flaws; it is entertaining, scary and dripping in atmosphere.

If the alien can run around outside the space ship how could, and why would anyone suggest, that it can be killed by depriving it of oxygen? Why are there valves attached to the transmitter/antennae of the space station? How can anything gain access to the inside of the space station by running up the exhaust pipe? Is it not fundamentally necessary for a space ship to be airtight? The first act actually looks promising and makes me questioning why it got mixed reviews. Then they just ruined it in the second and third act. It's actually thrilling to watch it, that's why it was enjoyable for me. But there are too many scenes that are just too stupid for the sake of making it a 'thriller'. Especially the last scene, where they know the movie is too mediocre as a whole, so instead they're trying to make an 'interesting' plot twist ending to make up all of it. But the ending just came too stupid for me and leaves an unpleasant feeling for this movie. I would give 7 if it wasn't for the ending tbh. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I decided there is not much I can say about "Life" without spoilers, so even though I know no one is reading this, I am going to go ahead a pop a spoiler tag on this one. Just in case you know. Stop now if you don't want spoilers. I went to the movies this weekend not because I was particularly dying to see this movie, but my roommate was out of town and I didn't want to be left alone with my thoughts for too long, or I may start questioning my existence. Again. So I went to see "Life", and oh boy. I was intrigued by the unlikely bro-mance that the dreamy pair of Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds have been advertising on this press tour. And "Spirit in the Sky" is in the previews, so I thought this may be up my alley after all.

I didn't have much expectations other than "scary space movie", but it was more of a horror than I anticipated. In the previews it seemed like it would be more lighthearted than it ended up being. We had about 30 minutes of goofy science time, and then quickly took a turn towards darkness that we never came back from at all. Once the "alien" made its first move and killed one of the crew members (Ryan Reynolds! Right off the bat!), everything escalated through the systematic execution of the the rest of the space station by the "Alien"-like alien.

Lots of jump scares later and one final twist at the end that I only figured out right before the reveal, the film ended with an unresolved horror that that cut to black right as Greenbaum's guitar riffs starts. 5.5/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Everything more or less predictable and unoriginal. From the start I knew what I was in for, a movie not so different from any movie from its "alien on a spaceship" subgenre, and my initial suspicions proved right. The ending was the movie's last twitch to surprise the viewer, but it added nothing to the quality of the movie. Good acting if you consider how bad the script is. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Another dissapointing sci fi budget that could have been much more
- Astronaughts; very educated and thoughtful people, depicted in holywood as moronic fools, continually making whimsical decisions that lead to the shallow cat and mouse action monopolising the film. It's all too familiar in sci fi films. Did the alien need to escape so soon? Could the story have been drawn out a tiny bit more? We could have learnt more about it's complex biology, or why it learns quicker than any other animal.
- Jake Gyllenhall and Ryan Reynolds: two star actors, aren't given much dialogue. Such a waste.
- The alien is strong enough to mangle a hand, but it can't rip a glove; a glove that can be pierced with a sharp object...? - Why is quarantine suddenly called firewalls? Is the alien a computer virus?
- Gyllenhall, self proclaimed pilot, manages to do the complete opposite of what he intended, by flying the ship with the alien back to earth. Maybe the alien learn how to fly immediately: It's just that clever.
- Conviniently, despite the majority of the earth not being populated, they manage to land the shuttle right next to a boat. Without discussing it, these fisherman think their best course of action would be to open up the door to the shuttle that just crash landed next to them, despite Gyllenhall looking a bit stressed inside about them doing that. Is every one as stupid as an ape in this film?
- On the limited bright side, the alien was quite cool, and if there ever is a LIFE2 film, the earth is a much better scene for a cat and mouse saga than a small space station. Think Jaws, Godzilla or Jurassic Park. Though hopefully this group of filmmakers won't be given more than a B-movie budget ever again.

Ry-Ry and Jakey-Jakes reporting for duty. They shouldn't have.

Life

Daniel Espinosa, the director has a pretty simple pop culture vocab. It ought to suck the viewers in and leave none the wiser. The simple beings will whirl merrily around the cheap thrills and the smarter ones exhausted and also mildly depressed by the "entertainment" clause that the film misinterprets. And what I was disappointed the most was from the fact that the film is incredibly effortful. And I don't mean just the practical shooting of the zero gravity scenes- which actually is all of them- and the poorly painted visual effects. But I am pointing towards the script. A script that tries so hard to not be "this" or "that" film, ends up being like no film at all. And I don't mean that in a good way.

From the casting decisions to horrifying elements, each of them or those are staged in a way to impress by disproving your theory or expectations. By the way, there is nothing wrong with that. But considering this as a meaningful advancement in the storytelling and relying upon it that the audience will feed on it, easily. There's everything wrong with that. Life becomes difficult to define. Not to forget that there isn't any profound poetry behind that.

But it neither remains a survival job nor a chess game. Not nearly a suicidal mission and certainly not an act of sacrifice. We are given a brief period, a brief set piece, a brief number of characters and horribly brief encounters of death or tragedy. So maybe the genre "horror" fits in perfectly. Not for the audience, but the makers and the film and the Life itself. P.S. It is really difficult to not break the fourth wall, knowing that these two geniuses- Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal- were goofballing around the set. Maybe they should have just shown us those footages.

However, when you add the characters and overall effect this movie manages to create you get a highly realised film that captures the realistic considerations a group of people would have to make if extra terestrial life was found. It is this realistic mindset approach combined with solid film making that allows the cast to really follow through on this film, to deliver an enjoyable insight into a highly talked about scenario. The contrast with alien life to the very human characters in this film provides weight and genuine interest from the audience into the outcome of the story.
