I had high hopes for this film. Rooster Teeth is one of the best online content producers hands down. Lazer Team was not up to the storytelling quality RT (Rooster Teeth) is known for.

The story falls very flat on its face. It was trying to be cleaver but came off as so generic, it was impossible to care about what happened next. The main characters (Lazer Team) are very forgettable. At no point in the film did I care about what would happen to them.

The acting in the film is hit and miss. The Lazer Team characters are surprisingly well acted (besides a few scenes with Bernie's character). With the exception of Alan Richson's character, the side characters were pretty bad. Their acting felt like it was from an Asylum Syfy flick.

The special and visual effects went from bad to mediocre. The alien designs were pretty ugly and uncreative. There were also several points during the film were I noticed obvious green screen shots as well as chroma key errors.

There are a few positives I have with the movie. The jokes are hysterical. Rooster Teeth excels at making clever jokes that hit there mark. I do want to note that I did have an issue with "crotch shot" jokes that happened over and over and over again. The first 3 or 4 were funny, but when it got to 7 or 8 "crotch shot" jokes, I stopped finding them funny. One other positive I had with the film was the picture quality. For a film not being shot with Hollywood cameras, the Red 4K cameras look beautiful.

Overall, I went into Lazer Team to see a great film and laugh throughout the movie. I unfortunately didn't like the film and don't even think that as a movie it is that great. However, I did laugh at most of the joke and I did love the references to many of the Rooster Teeth characters.

Acting is very poor, but hey, they're mostly amateurs.
Special effects are horrible, probably because of small budget.
But then we have extremely dumb story, poor, poor writing, lame jokes and I just can't find anything good in this movie.

Just because you want to make a movie, doesn't mean you should.

It's fun.

It struck me as a Disney Channel SciFi meets Paul Blart. It's mostly silly but the effects are good enough and the action moves along briskly. It's not a big movie but it's a nice bit of fun.

TL:DR A pleasantly enjoyable film, regardless of if you're a fan of Roosterteeth or not.

The chemistry between the team comes across really well, making the cringing moments in the film (some things a parent shouldn't witness...) very believable, as well as their general interactions with each other. Really gave me a sort of Ghostbusters camaraderie feel with them. That's then backed up by solid work from Alan Ritchson, especially seeing his reactions with being forced to work with a group of common joes when he's essentially been training his entire life.

The story is a touch predictable at times, yet honestly the performances carry it though. As far as the design goes, for low budget they've done a good job. There were moments from the trailers where I feared things that were CGI looked too fake but the final versions look fine, certainly for a low budget production. The general physical set design really sets up the look nicely, to the point of where the CGI blends in pretty well and is believable.

Above all, a perfectly enjoyable film made by a group who I enjoy watching and I could easily see myself watching it again and recommending it to others as a great watch.

What do I say about Lazer Team?
I enjoyed it so damn much.

But it's not all perfect.

Pros of the Film:
-Every joke used in the film was absolutely hilarious, they knew the right time to make the perfect jokes, which is expected because it's Rooster Teeth.
-The actors in general? Yes, almost everyone was perfect, Gavin, Michael, Burnie and Colton performed spectacularly in the roles they were put in, almost like they were born for their roles.
- The chemistry between the characters were pretty good as well, which allowed the film to work.
- The little references of RT Stuff, and other gaming world related things made me very happy!
- The film looked so damn good, even in the small cinema I was sitting in!
-Some special effects were pretty cool looking in the cinema, especially the explosions.

Cons of the Film:
-The story was so damn generic, which resulted in some corny lines being like, "OMG, we have to save the world type of thing", but even though this was there, the jokes kinda of overshadowed that fact.
- THE CGI was dreadful, the aliens looked horrible and a lot of special effects looked so unrealistic it wasn't even funny.
-Lastly, side-characters, most of them were pretty bad, (excluding Alan Ritchinson as Adam and the cameos of small side characters), and you consider why they were even put in the film.

Overall, I'd give this movie an 8 out of 10. Lazer Team tries to put it's self out there with the big guys but inevitably kinda fails. But it is an thrill to watch as it is just so damn funny and action filled. It's also a good start for a small budget film, that it can be this good. I hope Rooster Teeth can now just use this as an experience to push on further to make more films and I wish them well for the future!

Yet, it lacks the wit and comedic bite the studio is known for with series like Red vs. Blue. Instead they chose to go for something with humor that has a chance of being successful with a larger audience. It's not hard to see why they might have wanted to play it safe like this. It is after all their first movie and things like the special effects make it clear that they didn't have the biggest budget.

The movie is still amusing though. While not entirely satisfying or a laugh riot, there are moments where the smart-alecky sense of humor Rooster Teeth is known for shines through and brings the laughs. Things like the references to Red vs. Blue and familiar faces form Rooster Teeth are sure to be a nice treat for their fans.

For all of the movies "play it safe" moments the biggest problem it has is it's reliance on formula. The movie's need to adhere to standard superhero movie tropes is one of the biggest things that gets in the way of the humor. But for Rooster Teeth fans or just those who like goofball humor, Lazer Team can still prove to be an amusing experience. Even if tries too hard to be a crowd pleaser and feels half-hearted as a result.

Critics can say what they like about this film, that the special effects were sub-par, the acting was hit or miss, whatever. The fact of the matter was that the writing was not just funny, often downright hilarious, and it was delivered exceedingly well. Critics tend to have problems with comedies, because they don't treat it like a comedic film, but like a regular drama or action film with comedy sprinkled in. It's not Avengers that has some good comedic writing; it's a comedy film, made to deliver comedy. The special effects, the action, everything is a vehicle for delivering the next joke. A comedic movie is like a standup set with a story to tie it together, and Lazer Team does just that. The story is cohesive and engaging enough to get you to the next joke, and you don't have to wait long! If you're going to see Lazer Team to do anything but laugh, you're going for the wrong reason. Expect to laugh and be engaged when you're not. But I guess most critics are humorless old farts. Expand

The humor might work for silver screen, but there's a lot of flailing about and not much on acting department

There's always a room for campy fun comedy, especially when it's a project associated with already famous studio from Youtube like Rooster Teeth. This is a niche studio which already has adoring fans and it's understandable to have a sense of belonging and familiarity. The type of humor from sci-fi parody is good for popcorn flick, admittedly also better than its similar peer Pixels, but the most concerning issues here are the stiff acting and average script.

Four men randomly put on a suit meant to fight alien. Since each man has respective piece, they have to wield them as a team to prevail. The premise is silly from the first place, one is better off not questioning and just roll with it. There's a sizable effort and adoration for the sci-fi genre, even though not all elements pan out, the mold fits the quirkiness quite well just for the sake of entertainment.

This is not a large budget production, yet it looks good when it needs to and the trademark video game vibe is appreciable. There's surprisingly a good characterization for the so called Lazer Team, even though they might not be appealing from the start. Two or three moments surpass its rowdy nut-busting nature, and if it's a story of underdog fighting for glory, there's an identifiable aspect to the theme.

What ruins the production most of the time is the deadpan acting. The four main leads perform erratically, one might look like he's reading from Youtube comments, while another is shouting profusely. They don't really have any chemistry, furthermore it will impact the jokes revolving slapstick, making them dull and repetitive.

If they could find the balance between corny fun and appropriate acting, Lazer Team might be more than a simple popcorn flick, although the light comedic nature is acceptably decent as well.

But the acting certainly felt very thin in a lot of areas, I laughed once throughout the entirety of this comedy, the special effects left a lot to be desired (Colton's sped up running looked like a slow jog at 4x speed... and the end sequence... anyway, moving on), and the story is a prime example of a fantastic concept poorly presented.
Yes the characters had history with each other, but every emotional section felt so forced and I felt almost no connection with any of the characters whatsoever.
The first half an hour doesn't feel like Lazer Team, it feels like "the rooster teeth movie". Luckily they move away from that during the later sections.

The most redeeming point is that they did romance right, I.E. they knew it had no real place in this movie, and so pretty much kept it to a minimum with a few humorous sections resulting from it.

So why did I enjoy it? I'm a rooster teeth fan and it feels like watching an hour and a half of Rooster Teeth content. But if you don't watch they're content online, I couldn't recommend this film.

It knew it was a comedy first, sci-fi second. The movie only suffered due to its censoring, it was the PG version of Neighborhood Watch without having to put up with Vince Vaughn. All actors held their own with the YouTube personalities stealing the show, due to casting them all as lovable idiots. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Alright, this movie was very good in my opinion. I went to see it on the day it was released and it went exactly as you would imagine. Every Rooster Teeth fan was there :D. Now let's get to the exciting part. The characters was what I really enjoyed. They had Hagan (Burnie Burns) a cop who was having some trouble adjusting to life, especially with his daughter (Allie DeBerry) and best friend Herman (Colton Dunn) who I thought was funny, but not much. I was the type of guy that really liked Woody (Gavin Free) and Zach (Michael Jones) because I knew them the most. I knew Burnie as well but not like I did with two of the members in Achievement Hunter. Furthermore, Gavin's performance was one that definitely made me laugh. Michael's role was kind of obvious but yeah, it was cool to see him as a somewhat normal jock. I also admit this was way better than pixels, because it had some uniqueness to it and that's what I liked.

The only thing I liked about Pixels was the fact that some memorable video games got to appear in there.
