With distinct visual style Last Knights is a decent light fantasy flick, although the narrative might feel too familiar and slow. Last Knights is not an epicWith distinct visual style Last Knights is a decent light fantasy flick, although the narrative might feel too familiar and slow. It's odd that a medieval fantasy movie with respectable cast nearly flies off radar. Last Knights is not an epic tale, in fact the plot heavily resembles that of 47 Ronin and considering even Keanu Reeves' journey is inspired by multitude of per-existing works, this plot is unoriginal at best. The pacing is slow, creating a rather bloated runtime. Still, the cast as well as cinematography produce nice atmosphere, especially in latter half, just making Last Knights a moderately enjoyable popcorn flick.

Raiden (Clive Owen) is a commander with a dark past, he was taken by his lord Bartok (Morgan Freeman) and granted opportunity to lead the knights. As a man of integrity Bartok openly opposes Minister Gezza Mott (Aksel Hennie), this doesn't end up well for him as he loses his land and riches, amongst other things. Thus the tale of coping and possible vengeance begins. The premise is far too predictable, more so if you have watched 47 Ronin, the screenplay almost mirrors one another.

Clive Owen has the rugged commander look, but he doesn't seem engaging. I can't help but seeing the solemn Keanu Reeves' persona as neither of them barely exhibits any meaningful expression. Morgan Freeman is as dependable as ever, he's charismatic and does pretty much what one expected. As for the villain, Aksel Hennie performs admirably. He does seem corrupt, conniving and slightly paranoid. The script gives him ominous vibe that audience would love to hate.

Supporting cast is oriented towards the mix of European and Asian, props for the casting department to pull off the eclectic assemble. They also have some experience in action movies and TV shows overall, so it’s not all obscure faces. The setting puts emphasis on hybrid culture, architectures and costumes appear to be from ancient Persia with an oriental touch. It's a quaint atmosphere and presents a few lavish set pieces. Cinematography uses grayish filter for most of these areas and outfits, in exception of certain characters or definitive environment which are more vibrant.

While it looks presentable, the plot may deter some audiences. Its script tries to engage with intriguing lines, and it's mildly successful. Unfortunately, the film spends more than half of its runtime stuttering to find its rhythm. This is made worse by the outdated screenplay, the plot devices are not only foreseeable, they are also heavy-handed in execution.

The last act fares better as it offers more polished action sequences, although there is no surprise twist to be had here. Last Knights is made from tired elements of the genres, it doesn't do enough for a fascinating spectacle. However, with a presentable graphic and production design, it’s barely sufficient for a light watch.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Don't listen to the critics. They is one of those instanced where they bash an action move because they feel there is no art there. *Spoiler* This movie is another re-imagining of the Japanese historical event/legend of the 47 ronin. The legend is supposed to be a an account of when 47 ronin waited and plotted a year in order to get revenge for there daimyo (feudal lord) when he was compelled to commit seppuku (ritual suicide) for assaulting a court official. The story is supposed to example of the samurai code of honer. The movie stayed true to the techniques they used to deceive the court official who they planned to kill but its a bit awkward in the setting of knights and Clive Owen. They also didn't change what the call the Emperor when they decided to used knights, so you have an Emperor instead of a king. Overall a good movie with good acting. It has good action as well but its more about the story that the fighting. If you love the story of the 47 ronin(not the **** Keanu Reeves movie) you will like this movie. Expand

To the critics I cant write on the different aspects an expert looks at in reviewing a movie but as a fan of the movies I have a particular interest in certain types of movies and The Last Knight is one of them. Clive Owen is so good looking and the seriousness of his expressions are amazing. Morgan Freeman has taken on roles that he carries so well. thank you to the crew and cast who made this movie for people like me. Expand

They are incapable of enjoying a film that is simply entertaining. The visual style of the film is great, the look and feel of the characters is unique, the action is beautiful and fluid, the acting is solid, and the revenge plot is always satisfying especially when you throw in some unpredictability. I think we have a cult hit. I feel sorry for the critics that couldn't enjoy it, because there is a lot of entertainment value here. Expand

I think critics spend too much time comparing one movie against another, or past movies. Today finding a sparkling new twist to a story that may have been told before may not always have a new twist just a human experience to be told. I'm a forever SciFi lover, I rarely find movies today that peak my interest, thought all of the comic book scifi is not to my liking. Look up the word epic, I think it falls in that description. Well, since I don't really watch a lot of medieval movies, and not many to "compare with" I thought it very good! Expand

Its a good but not perfect "westernized" adaptation of the story of the 47 ronin, The acting by the main characters is a bit bland, but it doesn't hurt the movie, the action sequences are done well.... A recommended watch for sword action fans.

I approached this film with low expectations given the dismal critic score it received. What I saw was an exciting and at times inspiring story which had me hooked and eager to see how things played out.

You can tell this is a Westernised version of a story set in feudal Japan - the context would make perfect sense where it in the Samurai genre. Transplanting it to a fantasy setting takes some getting used too but it does work. One thing I did think the film failed on was an attempt to bow to modern notions of multiculturalism - it doesn't quite work and comes off jarring.

But beyond that - there's a lot about this movie that inner city trendy, social justice warrior, feminist film critics will hate; it is unashamedly masculine in the traditional sense of the term, in all the ways that third wave feminism is trying so desperately to kill. The film extols male virtues of strength, honor and loyalty. There's no sign of a female warrior character implausibly mincing it with the men - the female characters adopt more traditional roles - as damsels to be rescued or wives awaiting the coming of their husbands. If they had done the film in a feudal Japanese setting it would be OK because it's historically accurate, but in a fantasy setting the film makers are expected to adhere to the new religious dogma of feminist revisionism and they didn't - so the wimpy career critics have savaged it accordingly.

It's not a perfect film - but it's a good one with a strong cast and a great story. A trifle predictable, but in the most satisfying way.

Don't know why the critics are so hard on this one. Yes Morgan feels like he phoned it in. Otherwise, it was a fairly good movie. It was refreshing to see a westernized take on the extreme honour system. The mix of styles was fun too.

This movie reminds me of the first life values my grandfather thought me, honor, respect, devotion, loyalty and pride. This is a very inspirational movie and we should watch it when we feel confused about ourselves. I understand how some people cannot be moved or comprehend by the deepnest of this movie, perhaps due to environment superficiality they surround themselves with. "Honor is something that all men are born with. It cannot be taken from you nor can it be granted. It must only not be lost."

When the knights rise after the fall of their master.

I had a feeling that I know this story from somewhere else like a deja-vu, but more than that I felt it should have been a ninja story than the knight's. So when I checked the crew list and I found the Japanese director who made 'Goemon'. That's not at all, it was indeed a version of the Japanese classical hit 'The Loyal 47 Ronin'. Honestly, I haven't seen that, but have seen the other versions like the Keanu Reeve's recent '47 Ronon' et cetera.

It was the story of a group of knights led by Raiden played by Clive Owen. After their master was tricked to death by a corrupted minister in the court of law, everyone thinks the knights would avenge for it. But that does not happen and as the years pass, slowly the hope fades away. And then comes a twist with some good action sequences before the end credits roll up.

It was a great story, but the transforming it from a ninja tale to a knight's did not give that solid revenge seeking effect. Because the ninja fights are kind of stylish, because the stunt choreography and costumes for ninjas has changed in the present scenario. Whereas the knight's remained same for the decades, that means it was a very normal like a medieval European sword fight. So you can call it a realistic, yet there's a filmy thing which lacks in it.

That's fine because the entire film was almost a slow drama. So don't assume it is a complete action film. In that perspective, it will definitely disappoint a few viewers, but I think it is still worth giving a try. The cast and the production were awesome, but still there's something is holding back it to the B movies list than an A. And finally, seeing the way it ended, I think there will be another film to follow.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The difference between critics and users scores is probably a difference in focus.

Most of the plot and actions of the characters don't make logical sense so if that's important to you, you probably won't like it. But it's scenic and flashy with some good emotional acting, fitting music, tragic heroes ... So if that's what you like, go enjoy it.

It's pretty much a shallow version of Gladiator.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.
