Knives Out is about solving the murder of Harlan, a successfull fiction writer who's wealth only seemed to increase the gap between him and his family. When he is found one morning with his throat cut, a murder mystery unfolds.

To keep it short: The movie is very funny, with many different intriguing characters that all seem to have a reason to dislike Harlan, and Daniel Craig portrays a funny private detective that has a nose for people and their intensions.

I really liked the movie! I was thoroughly entertained, laughed a lot and i can recommend it to other people. I give it a 9/10.

"That certainly not what I was expecting."

- Whodunit?
- Rian Johnson.
- Why?
- To subvert the tropes of yet another sub-genre... properly!

As divisive as it was, I neither loved nor hated the love-it-or-hate-it The Last Jedi. Maybe because I'm not a huge fan of the much-beloved saga. But I can give you a quick opinion of what I thought about it anyway. The first half almost turned me off completely: tons of lame jokes and out-of-character moments that indicate that Johnson's biggest concern was to subvert expectations and nothing but. The second half of the film was way better. It proved to me that Johnson is actually very capable of adding fresh blood to the saga, so effortlessly to such an extent that I wondered why he struggled so much in the first half.

In Knives Out, Johnson didn't add a new spin on the 'whodunit' sub-genre of detective fiction; he took it and turned it on its head. He did so not only by playing with the tropes and mechanisms of this sub-genre -and boy, he did that so exquisitely and gracefully- but he also by using a new and very effective building block: Drama. It doesn't sound new, isn't it? But, actually, relying on it here, in this kind of a story, is nothing short of revolutionary, and that's simply lies in the fact it's unprecedented to build upon it here. The result is nothing but marvellous. And although that, at some point, the main concern of the plot wasn't the murder mystery per se, the mystery didn't lose its sharpness even a tiny bit. And that's a strong proof that everything worked, and integrated, seamlessly. I said integrated because the film has a plethora of comedic bits throughout its runtime -which flies by- and, to be honest, I think every single joke landed perfectly. The film also suggest a political agenda that's exquisitely woven into the plot, and provides a sharp social commentary that's impressively subtle.

Not only did Rian Johnson reinvigorate this seemingly outmoded and unfruitful sub-genre, but he also did the same thing with a couple of members of the star-studded cast: I didn't know that Chris Evans, Captain America himself, would be better as, well, an "Anti-Captain America "; Craig as Blanc is absolutely phenomenal, with his southern accent and caricature detective character; and Jaeden Martell (IT) is very interesting as the weirdo Jacob Thrombey. As for Curtis, Langford, Plummer, Collette and Shannon, Johnson makes an excellent use of their incredible acting abilities, and of their facial expressions and features, especially Shannon with his remarkable menacing countenance. The real standout, though, is Ana de Armas. I mean, she was good in Blade Runner 2049, but here, as she plays my new favourite version of Pinocchio, she proves she's an exceptionally talented actress who is capable of expressing emotions, and changing them readily, only with her eyes. Honestly, I think she should have been nominated for an Oscar!

Overall, I'm really surprised how much I loved this film. With Johnson superb and clever direction and meticulously-nuanced and witty -albeit slightly too-structured- screenplay, I think this is my favourite - even if it's not my highest-rated - film of 2019. You know what, this film is actually terrible: it's very pretentious; its puzzle is too convoluted for its own good; it has an overabundance of plot twists; it underutilized its stellar ensemble; and it has a lot of plot holes, or -in this case- donut holes! Excuse me, I gotta leave right now!

If you were not a big fan of The Last Jedi then I urge you to check this film out and see that Rian Johnson is a more capable director when he is working on his own. It’s a film with issues that are minor and were the only issues I had with the film. The film does have some political subtext to it which I liked but there were some areas where it was a little on the nose. It didn’t take me out of the movie but I wished it had been handled a little better. This movie has a bunch of A-list actors and they all bring their A-game. Every performance in this movie is pretty great but Daniel Craig, Chirs Evans, and Ana de Armas steal every scene they are in. It can be a little hard to get used to Craig’s heavy southern drawl at first but you eventually get used to it. Chris Evans is a nice counterweight to everyone’s craziness. I felt he was one of the funniest characters in the movie except for one joke. Ana de Armas is a great protagonist to follow throughout the film along with Daniel Craig. All 3 of them disappear into their roles and portray their characters almost perfectly. It’s a great redemption film for Chris Evans from Red Sea Diving Resort. The script is pretty great. There are tons of clues hidden beneath each line of dialogue and it all feels very natural. This allows for Johnson’s comedic writing to shine. He is able to cleverly insert jokes that most of the time are pretty hilarious. The reason the comedy didn’t work that well in The Last Jedi for me was that it felt forced and didn’t always align well with the tone but the comedy shines here because it fits the film’s tone perfectly. While not every joke is hilarious, a majority of them are. The jokes that go along with certain characters fit their character pretty well. Some of the funniest lines in the movie are delivered by Michael Shannon and Daniel Craig because the jokes they tell perfectly fit their characters. The story is fairly simple but Rian Johnson throws a lot of simple twists throughout that makes it feels unique. The film decides to reveal what actually happened to the victim halfway through the film and it turns into a cover up which then progresses to a pretty major twist that I never saw coming but felt necessary and made sense to the narrative. The music was also pretty good. It added tension and was interesting to listen to while the events unfolded. Overall, Knives Out is a great murder mystery with great performances, a great script, hilarious jokes, and some interesting twists. Expand

It was really great to see a lot of my favourite actors like Toni Collette, Michael Shannon, Jamie Lee Curtis, Chris Evans and Daniel Craig in a single film, that too a whodunit, one of my favourite genres. . .
The first 30 minutes or so felt a little generically convoluted but it got better after that and was entertaining to watch till the end. There was a lot of intriguing suspense and everyone did feel like a suspect, and I got a little "Murder on the Orient Express" vibe. It's not even close to that on the whole, but the few minutes of tension was perhaps the best part of the film. The next thing I appreciated about the film is that it kinda dodges the familiar route of telling the story. Things get revealed in the middle, and it takes a little different kind of route and becomes kinda "chase" movie. It's actually about what a particular character is going through, throughout the movie, and the hurdles that the said character is going through. Speaking of which, I need to say that characterization was really good in this film. No two characters could be exchanged with the other. .
.
What holds the movie back is that it doesn't use any new tricks to reveal things. You'll realize that everything that they went for were quite familiar and while serving the movie its purpose, it doesn't form a long lasting impression inside our head. And, the "gimmick" used for the protagonist is absolute a$$. .
.
It's a very nice film and a really good way of presenting a whodunit, if you can ignore the familiar tropes. Chris Evans, fresh out of the Steve Rogers role, gives a remarkable performance in a role of a character that's literally the opposite of what Steve Rogers is. I just got to see that Evans was a much better actor than I took him for. Craig is fantastic, but feels quite like James Bond lite. Others have done a good job for whatever they were given. Rian Johnson is one of the most underappreciated writers/directors, along with Mike Flanagan. .

I have been one who’s had respect for Rian even through the entire dramatic events of the Star Wars fandom splitting in a million pieces. But ‘Knives Out,’ is AWESOME. It is an absolutely hilarious, mystery-filled, classic whodunnit with a decked cast of Jamie Lee Curtis, Ana de Armas, Daniel Craig, and Chris Evans, to name a few. It truly is a fun time in the theaters with many twists and turns, each perplexing you even more until the mystery of who killed Harlon Thrombey. A definitely rewatchable film and one of the year’s best for sure! Expand

Daniel Craig estava excelente nesse filme.

Nota 9!

Strongly reminiscent of classic British tea-and-biscuits murder mysteries (think Midsommer Murders, Death In Paradise or any of the myriad Agatha Christie adaptations) with a memorable victim, a massive inheritance, a stately home full of suspects with motives that emerge piece by piece, capped off by Daniel Craig's quirkily New Orleans-ish accented consulting detective Benoit Blanc and Ana de Armas' wide-eyed and innocent-seeming undocumented migrant nurse Marta Cabrera. The old-fashioned stately home and the traditional battle for the inheritance sits very neatly alongside up-to-the-minute concerns such as attitudes towards migrants and teenagers tweeting alt-right memes from the toilet.

It's hard to give a proper review of a whodunit without giving away too much, suffice to say that from very early on in the film we shift from trying to figure out who they are and what they dun to wondering if they can get away with what they dun, a welcome twist on what could have been a highly orthodox mystery plot.

An absolute blast of a film.

When Rian Johnson is in charge of writing and directing a production, I have an intuition that the film will do wonderfully well. And really, this is what happened. But we have a problem here.
As we all know, Rian Johnson is known for its famous twists in the film. This happened in 'The Last Jedi' and it happens here ALMOST ALL THE TIME. The first two times, the twists are shocking and make the viewer frustrated, but soon after the twists no longer shock and lose all their charm.
Thanks to that, the film will not win my 10, but it came very close.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Knives Out was a super engaging movie and with an amazing plot. I didn’t want the movie to ever end multiple times throughout the movie. The actors were all very good and they were pretty funny. The Cinematography was beautiful and the use of foreshadowing and subtle symbols in the movie was really smart. At the beginning of the movie, Harlan Thrombey said something about not being able to distinguish a real knife from a prop knife and in one of the last scenes, Ransom uses a fake knife when trying to kill Marta. Almost as if Harlan planned the whole thing like one of his books. The baseball that was on Harlan’s desk also took a wild trip throughout the film, being passed by many people, and eventually landed back where is was in the beginning. This is analogous to Gravity’s Rainbow as Detective Benoit said his working process was like: “The projectile’s path can be traced and calculated and he is there waiting for the truth to land at his feet.”

One part of the movie that I did not really like was the generic characters. They really didn’t have much depth it seemed. Marta was a shy, truthful girl, Ransom was an entitled, **** son, the detective was a cunning, handsome man, and so on. It seemed like none of the characters had any depth. Even the kids in the movie were called each other stereotypical names: alt right troll and liberal snowflake. I wanted the characters to develop but they never did it seemed like. Marta never overcame her visceral reaction to lying, she was just able to hold her vomit in longer.

The dialogue was really quick and intelligent. I really liked the banter that the members of the Thrombey family had with each other and it kept the scenes suspenseful yet funny. The sequence of scenes when the will was about to be read to the family was my favorite of the movie. The dialogue was really good and we got to see each character’s personality come out and it was a major turning point in the movie when Marta got all of the inheritance.

The Thrombeys, are what seems to be defined as a dysfuncional family; corrupted with conflicts of wealth and fortune. As much as they hate each other, they wouldn't miss an evening to celebrate their beloved pop's birthday.
Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) is a successful mystery novelist; mainly introduced as the beholder of the family's wealth and fortune. He was found dead with his throat slit and blood flowing from the sofa to the floor of his office, in the morning after his 85th birthday.
Official reports of his death stated that it was a suicide, but an anonymous tipper sent a letter to Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig), believing that the truth may say otherwise. The letter is what led this famous detective to join on the investigation. Blanc together with two policemen (LaKeith Stanfield and Noah Segan) endeavor to unveil the mystery of the sudden death, and making everybody a suspect to be further questioned. The whole family might not be proven guilty of murder yet, but they're surely guilty of hiding unforgiving secrets and taking advantage of Harlan's wealth for their own pleasure.
Blanc might not get truth out of the Thrombeys, but one thing he knows for sure. There is one who can't lie without feeling the need to vomit, and that is Marta Cabrera (Ana de Armas); Harlan's personal carer and nurse whom the Thrombeys call her as part of the family.
"Knives Out" is such an amusing story with a good laugh and tension, and full of unexpected plot twists. It is as if it's telling the audience exactly what happened and making us feel like we already know who is the obvious culprit. It turns out, we're just as clueless as many of the characters in this movie.
This Mystery/comedy movie by Rian Johnson is quite a masterpiece. Not only because of its fascinating casts, but also the well-directed and thought-out storyline that keeps people hooked. The movie begins with an establishing shot designed to inform the audience where the action will take place, and showing the relationship between the objects shown with the main character in the movie. It takes place in a a gothic revival mansion, creating the mood for a perfect mystery house. The interiors of the house is decorated with creepy props from unusual looking dolls, medieval statues, to the iconic knife sculpture; perfect for portraying the personality of Harlan Thrombey as a man of dark humor and mystery. All the technical process of this film is brilliant, from the placement of each props, blocking of each characters, the framing and the color palette of the house, made every scene aesthetically pleasing. The most significantly important piece is the painting of Harlan. It gives a statement that although Harlan might have died in the beginning of the movie, the painting of him figuratively says that he still owns the house and rules the family, and the sense that he is still looking down at them.
I say that it's fair that this movie has such high ratings and received many awards and nominations, for instance IMDb rated an 8 out of 10 and also an 82 in metascore universal acclaim. It's acceptable because I do feel like all the elements in the movie combined, creates this really entertaining story. In conclusion, I recommend this movie as a must-watch.

This is an old fashioned whodunit a la the style of Agatha Christie with hints of Hitchcock coupled with a screenplay that compels attention and careful concentration by the viewer. Plot twists and sometimes tongue In cheek dialogue make the film worthy of attending. Handled in the direction of another less skilled writer and director, the film might well have crossed the line into silliness and absurdity. Fortunately, it does not.
Although the film itself is not momentous and could be criticized for being longer than it should be, when all is said and done, the film works. I give it an 8 for affording the audience the opportunity to have a light and entertaining theatrical experience.

The patriarch of a spoiled family (Christopher Plummer) is found dead on his 85th birthday and, of course, everyone has a motive. Enter a debonair Southern detective (Daniel Craig chewing up that accent) to solve the case. Chris Evans is especially enjoyable as the haughty, hateful grandson, while Toni Collette's new age entrepreneur is a hoot. (It's also a treat to see Frank Oz as the attorney.) The mystery keeps surprising right up til the end with lots of smart dialogue and stylish direction by Rian Johnson. Expand

As oneRian Johnson may not be the next Spielberg or, dare I say it, a 'Chris Nolan', but the writer director has a certain whimsy and playfulness missing from many film makers these days. Plus the fact that he simply does whatever he wants. As one of the main film makers behind the current Star Wars trilogy, he is the exact opposite to Abrams. Whilst Abrams sensibility is to mimic, Johnson's approach is to simply go the opposite way. Hence, this particular twist to the 'who dunnit' genre. Populated by some of the best actors in the business, Knives Out is loads of fun, and extremely well acted. Being released in the same period as the Rise of Skywalker, it is simply a commentary of the state of film goers these days: if you want a 'left field, meta approach' to your entertainment, don't tinker with a legacy franchise like Star Wars. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Knives Out is a tense movie reminiscent of Clue, but for the modern era. There are plenty of twists and turns that keep the movie suspenseful, while benefiting the pacing of the movie. The lead actress Ana de Armas and lead actor Daniel Craig do a great job of providing a nice contrast between seriousness and keeping the silliness of these kind of movies. I greatly enjoyed trying to solve the mystery as the clues unfolded, much like Clue or a Scooby Doo episode. Well worth the watch! Expand

I’ll be doing a riot if this movie doesn’t win Best Ensemble at the Critics’ Choice Awards.

What 2019 has taught me in movies is that you can make even the biggest of blockbusters 5 Hours, and still be like “Well, that went by fast…”
Because, clocking at 2h10’, Knives Out is not only a damn good time but, even for me not being one with a big mind on Mystery Flicks, I was still on the edge of my seat for whatever would happen next.

And it’s all thanks to the big cast full of big names like *insert actor’s/actress’ name here*, as they all do a great job playing each family member the investigators have to interrogate.
Daniel Craig was awesome in a campy way (playing this investigator who feels like he always has a blast whenever he’s solving **** and whenever Ana De Armas was onscreen, I wanted to hug her so bad. And Christopher Plummer literally played my Maths teacher, so that was some ****
This cast was basically composed of people who:
I wanted to hug real bad
I really want to be friends with
Were just there for Comedy Purposes

Of course, this is a Rian Johnson movie, so be ready to get your expectations “subverted” for Plot Twists and everything (even though a Mystery flick is good territory for Johnson to shoot you some plot twist to the head)... Maybe even in the smallest of moments. For instance, the beginning of the movie feels like it’s supposed to have a lady screaming to a dead body, but no. She just stands there, looking at the corpse…
And, as mentioned, not one with Mystery schtick, but for being a Mystery Movie, it was also both charming and bittersweet in a way. And the last shot was basically a **** all of you”, but in a great way. Probably the most hilarious way to end your movie and earn that ending. Man, the hits just keep coming and coming for Rian Johnson, and I can see a real bright future for him as a Writer/Director. Yes, even if he ripped the Star Wars fanbase in Half (believe me, it needs an H this big). I’ll be exquisitely sitting here, looking forward to whatever he’ll be doing next.

Also, Greatnana Wanetta FTW.

Ignore any noise being spouted from jaded ‘Star Wars’ fanboys. Rian Johnson is among the finest filmmakers currently working in Hollywood.

Consider his resume: he wrote and directed ‘Brick;’ he wrote and directed ‘The Brothers Bloom;’ he wrote and directed ‘Looper;’ he directed the Breaking Bad episodes ‘Fly,’ ‘Fifty-One,’ and ‘Ozymandias;’ and most recently he wrote and directed easily the best murder-mystery of the year, ‘Knives Out.’

The plot is dense and brilliantly serpentine—just as one should expect from a quintessential film of the genre—taking on the characteristics of an ouroboros.

Each of the characters in the film are familiar, flawed, and driven by their own delightfully selfish motivations.

But it’s the writing—oh the wonderful writing!—that makes this picture as powerful and poetic as it is. From the plot to the dialogue to the very last gasps of the denouement, Johnson keeps the audience completely rapt and on the edge of their seats wishing the saga could somehow continue ad infinitum.

Deceptively simple but strangely addictive and intelligently constructed.

I really didn't know what to expect about this film. I mean I knew the reviews had been good and the truth is that I was really interested because of Rian Johnson and the amazing cast he gathered.

And the film responded with good stuff, at least in my perspective. While it's true that you quickly sense who's responsible, the plot is pretty good and hooks you up since the first minute.
The suspense never falters drastically, with the exception of some slowdowns in the rhythm. Even so, Knives Out it's quite an entertaining experience and I loved that.

Very well done mainstream cinema outside franchises.
It's well known that we need a lot of it, so go watch this film.

The only real problem is its quite bloated, at 2 hours 10 minutes, it really stretches a plot out a few twists too many. If it was a crisp 95 minutes it would have been my favorite movie of the year. This modern take on the class whodunit genre is refreshing and risky. By playing with a well established format, Johnson is able to create a film that kept me interested and entertained throughout. That is not to say that this a film for everyone. Members of the party I saw this film with found it to be inferior to past works in the genre.

Where the film falls short for me is, as mentioned above, this movie thinks that it is very clever when in reality, it is not nearly as clever as it thinks it is. The twists are a bit predictable and that made for an underwhelming third act. Johnson's directing is for the most part great, but at times it feels like the film is giving the audience too many clues as to what is going on exactly.

The biggest strength of this movie is its acting. Its ensemble cast makes for several great performances. Craig's and de Armas' in particular stand out to me. Johnson's script is serious when it needs to be while at the same time having comical elements that do not feel out of place. Having been disappointed by the way humor was implemented into Johnson's last film, The Last Jedi, I was very pleased to see a far more effective use of it in this film.

Overall, I found Knives Out to be a very entertaining mystery film that was not afraid to play with the format of the class whodunit. The twists are a bit too obvious and the movie is not nearly as clever as it seems to think it is, but both of those factors did little to true damper by enjoyment of this film. While certain moviegoers may have problems with the writing or directing of this film, I would recommend it on the strength of the acting alone.

A modern and fun "who done it?" in the style of an Agatha Christie mystery. Fun and enjoyable with decent acting, good cinematography, and fantastic set design.
The necessary requirement of a "who done it?" to be enjoyable to me, that this one pulls off fantastically, is that if you are paying attention you can figure it out for yourself before the reveal.
Honestly the only downside I found with the movie is the policitical attributes and the push for the characters to be purely bad with no redeeming qualities as a way to associate with that alignment. It adds nothing to the movie and distracts quite a bit.

I can't not mention Daniel Craig's ludicrously over the top accent in this film, who sounds like a deeply thoughtful 'sleuth of the south' type. He has a similar accent in the film 'Logan Lucky' if I remember right. There are some intriguing plot twists, as we start to see more in terms of what happened from different characters perspectives/points of view. I also was quite keen on the main setting - a large, stately type home, which means many scenes have nice furniture and things in the background. This is certainly not a film to take entirely seriously but its a fun, whodunnit type watch - one which is fairly engrossing and thus I'd recommend it. Expand

The story gives you the classic "this is my main suspect" phenomena to pick your guilty party when you conduct your own "investigation" during the dialogues, but obviously you can't be sure if you're right or wrong. Cleverly giving out clues during the story progression makes you realize that you may be wrong all along.
I can't remember a period during the movie when I didn't have to pay attention. Everything the characters say and do on screen, adds up to the greater picture.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Knives Out is described by critics as "...paying homage to classic detective stories but gives the genre a timely twist". Spoiler Alert ... the twist is that it's a Whodunit SPOOF (in general), a Agatha Christie whodunit spoof (in particular) and, finally a Hercule Poirot spoof (more precisely). The screenplay is very well written and admirably performed by a wonderfully talented cast. Without giving the plot away, but justifying my categorization, I'll say this: the antagonists are obnoxious, law enforcement are somewhat dimwitted and inept, and PI is "over the top" superior. Throw in a "KFC" southern accent (perhaps a spoof of the Great Belgian sleuth's French accented English???), a preposterous plot and a wildly entertaining denouement, and you have a thoroughly enjoyable 2 hour comedy spoof. See it for what it is and LAUGH to "yur" heart's content! This movie is definitely worth your time and attention ... and you read it here, first (or thereabouts). Expand

Twisted as never seen before, the movie tries to tell a complicated story of a simple murder, yet to be seen as a suicide which to your surprise it will. Daniel Craig's magnificent performance stunts you since the very beginning of the movie. Editing had to be extremely difficult in making such a movie. Music rhymes with the story as it slowly but excitingly moves forward. Chris Evans' brilliant vicious character shows how talented he is after years of playing Captain America with too few dialogues.

There is nothing overly original about this movie and it clearly pays hommage to some classics in this genre, but it is still an extremely entertaining ride led by it's stellar cast.

The second act kind of hits a wall though but it recovers nicely in the ending.

It was a good movie capable of being a great one but it just didn't quite get there for me.

Good movie, and nothing more. Nothing we've seen before in many screenings of Agatha Christie's novellas. Very good acting of all. Storyline as I said is like a classical Agatha's novel...

Delightfully entertaining movie, fun every step of the way. Perhaps the grand reveal was a bit more simplistic than you were being led to believe, but I would certainly watch the sequel.

Despite the misleading marketing, 'Knives Out' was still a well-written and performed whodunit, with a terrific ensemble and a surprisingly clever twist at the end. I would say that some scenes could have been longer and others shouldn't have been there at all. It was still a fun and clever film in the spirit of Agatha Christie, and Rian Johnson can move on from 'The Last Jedi' with this. Expand

So I figured I'd give it a go. I honestly can't talk about the story very much without spoiling anything, so I'll just talk about the story and cast here. It's a great cast as you can tell by the poster, but as far as scene-stealers go, Daniel Craig steals this one as the rather humorous detective working the case. The cast as a whole is what made this film as fun as it was for the most part. Everybody was definitely on their A-game here! Storywise, it pretty much follows a lot of standard murder mystery tropes and plot points, to my disappointment, cause I was hoping for something slightly more fresh and different here. I also felt a bit underwhelmed with the third act personally and saw a couple "twists" coming from pretty far away. Overall, there's fun to be had here, but in my opinion, it settled for a mostly familiar setup and story, and played out a little more predictably than I was expecting and hoping for. If anything, see it for the great, even sometimes hilarious performances from the whole cast. Expand

However, I agree with Rex Reed at Observer in that for a thriller, this movie is not very thrilling. Perhaps Mr. Johnson was going for more of a dark comedy than a thriller, but I think if you're going to write a murder mystery, there should be at least three or four hair-raising moments in it. There were one or two moments that were mildly surprising, but I expect more suspense and intrigue in a murder mystery than Knives Out had. The movie is fine--I guess it is pretty well-written for a Hollywood movie--but there are plenty of crime shows on TV that are much more captivating and engrossing than this film. Expand

“This case is like a donut

Actually,
it's a donut within a donut's hole.”

‘Knives Out’ subverted my expectations...in a good way. A smartly written whodunit movie that manages to be both humorous and classy. The kind of murder mystery that never fails to entertain. Pleasing both cinephiles and mainstream audiences. Perfectly balance, as all things should be. It basically pulls a Hitchcock on us.

Rian Johnson is a great director, but at times has silly ideas. On the other hand, when given the right material I think he’s a great director and writer. He’s also a clever man, but never came off as annoying. The dialogue was so sharply written that I could tell the cast loved every minute of soaking up and delivering these lines. The cinematography was nothing short but beautiful and will often linger in rooms of the house which helps the audience immerse in the overall setting.

One of the tightest scripts of the year with raw humor and a satisfying mystery/comedy.

The cast is stellar, but the main stand outs for me were Daniel Craig, Ana de Armas, and Chris Evans. I loved Daniel Craig’s Southern drawl which I didn’t expect at first, but I was amazed of how far he went for it. Often times it reminded me of Frank Underwood from ‘House of Cards’. He plays detective Benoit Blanc, AKA CSI: KFC. At one point during the movie he delivers one of the funniest monologues in the entire movie, which was brilliantly delivered by Craig. He should seriously try out more comedy roles.

Dose anyone remember when Ana de Armas starred in Eli Roth’s ‘Knock Knock’? Well look at her now. She was absolutely excellent in this movie. The running joke throughout the entire movie is her character can’t lie and whenever she dose, she vomits on the spot. How ironic, yet I love the comedic irony behind it.

Chris Evans plays a spoiled child with a slimy grin during the worst situations. The over privilege black sheep of the family. This is very against type for Evans, especially when his character hates dogs, which I would imagine being difficult for Evans since he’s a dog lover in real life. Also the different sweaters he wears in every scenes was impeccable.

The rest of the cast manage to shine individually in this crowded movie. Although at times some of them felt like background wall paper compared to others. However that never takes away from what else ‘Knives Out’ has to offer.

Toni Collette dose a great impression of Gwyneth Paltrow. Michael Shannon plays a wimpy son to a crime-writer Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer). Despite the small screen time, Plummer is still charming as always. While Jamie Lee Curtis and her character brings the dramatic elements into play. She’s uninterested in the humorous quarrel during the grim situation, as early on she reminds everyone that her father just died.

Judging it as a whodunit mystery, the pay off itself is slick. The events leading to the death are revealed early into the movie, and instead Johnson remains steps ahead from the audience. There’s an underlining social commentary beneath the foul play. The themes of privilege and underprivileged with the sour taste of bitterness throughout. Nothing deep or new, but at least is trying to say something rather than being one thing.

Overall rating: My House. My Rules. My Coffee!!!

Knives Out is a refreshing look into the oldest and best "Whodunit" Genre.

The film is very amusing with quirky story beats, it pulls a quirkiness and style in it's Story flow without compromising on the mystery.

Zod from Man of Steel vs Captain America vs James Bond was a bout of wits and words I never knew I wanted to see and yet the performances from Craig, Evans and Shannon are the best from the bunch. I love that Jamie Lee is still going strong with her performance a standout in itself. The supporting Cast was good enough even if they were just a back drop to the whole story.

Good fun watch.

In Writer/Director Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out,” the whole is less than the sum of its parts. But there are so many parts – actors, plot twists – that the whole thing still works, sorta.

Writer Johnson (“Brothers Bloom,” “Looper,” “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”) clearly has taken delight in creating a puzzle box of a movie that’s filled with twists, turns, ambiguities and misunderstandings. To celebrate his 85th birthday, Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) invites his extended family to a celebration at his estate. But wait: nearly everybody has just been cut out of the will. In a staggeringly unpredictable development, by the end of the evening, Thrombey is dead. The subsequent investigation is complicated by the fact that most members of Thrombey’s family seem both loathsome and self-absorbed enough to have done the deed. The only exception to this pageant of narcissism is Marta, Thrombey’s nurse/caregiver/friend, who apparently would have to take a demotion to become Mother Teresa. Complications ensue. The game is afoot. Other clichés follow.

These convolutions are examined and explored by private detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig), whose keen mind will leave no stone unturned and whose Southern accent will leave no syllable undrawled. One character even questions whether this is “CSI: KFC.” It’s all great fun.

Director Johnson has at his disposal an embarrassment of riches. In addition to Craig, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Chris Evans and Toni Collette are all elegant pieces on this three-dimensional chess board. Frank Oz even takes a break from breathing life into Miss Piggy and Fozzie Bear to portray a reasonably life-like attorney. With so many of these actors playing against type, the pleasure they all take in this enterprise is almost palpable. However, it’s Ana de Armas (“Blade Runner 2049,” “War Dogs”) as Marta who most fully commands attention. De Armas will next be seen alongside Craig in the 2020 James Bond installment “No Time to Die.” Get used to seeing her. She’ll be in at least four major films next year.

What doesn’t work in this film is the tone. For the most part, the film strives to be a worthy installment in the tradition of the Agatha Christie who-dunnit genre, a goal at which it generally succeeds. However, there also is enough time spent burnishing the image of the “new immigrant” and chronicling the evils of the entitled – both themes explored repeatedly, repetitively, repetitiously, redundantly – that the detective story sometimes stalls a little. Is this social commentary or farcical fun?

On the whole, though, this is entertainment that’s worth your time, if only to see Daniel Craig temporarily trade in his medium dry martini, shaken not stirred, for a mint julip.
