This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Knives Out is described by critics as "...paying homage to classic detective stories but gives the genre a timely twist". Spoiler Alert ... the twist is that it's a Whodunit SPOOF (in general), a Agatha Christie whodunit spoof (in particular) and, finally a Hercule Poirot spoof (more precisely). The screenplay is very well written and admirably performed by a wonderfully talented cast. Without giving the plot away, but justifying my categorization, I'll say this: the antagonists are obnoxious, law enforcement are somewhat dimwitted and inept, and PI is "over the top" superior. Throw in a "KFC" southern accent (perhaps a spoof of the Great Belgian sleuth's French accented English???), a preposterous plot and a wildly entertaining denouement, and you have a thoroughly enjoyable 2 hour comedy spoof. See it for what it is and LAUGH to "yur" heart's content! This movie is definitely worth your time and attention ... and you read it here, first (or thereabouts). Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I liked the cast and set up and I would’ve rated this movie a lot higher if weren’t for two detractions. The biggest being the set up of the apparent murder suicide. The nurse accidentally gives her patient 100mg of morphine through an IV and he miraculously stays conscious for at least 10 minutes while they figure out a plan and execute it. The next criticism is a continuation of the first, the lady is a nurse therefore she would easily know something is in fact a miss since the guy stays conscious after the so called massive overdose. The movie is built upon this flimsy premise. That out of the way I did enjoy the ending as I didn’t see it coming. The only other complaint was that the movie starts out rather slow.going Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Entre Navajas y Secretos (2019)

Sinopsis:

Such as a car chase where the main character can't be going more than 50 mph and claims she's flooring it, and then fakes out all the police by simply hitting the brakes. Mistakes like this, or like the cheap gimmick of the main character throwing up whenever she tells a lie, are so far into silly territory that it gnaws at the credibility of what is in many respects a meticulously crafted murder mystery.

The other problem is at some point the twists start to feel a bit too predictable and rote, and the reveals start to lose impact. At some point, to earn its due, Knives Out had to fool the audience and it just never really does. Most of the supporting cast is quickly off the suspect list and the only thing that makes us still care about them is the actors' performances (which are generally quite good). No, the problem with Knives Out is solely in the writing.

Also Knives very cheaply injects politics as a way to turn the vilification of the antagonists up to 11 and ennoble the protagonist. It's pretty stunning how tacked on and lazy it's done here. With the film's "critics insurance" paid, I'm not surprised at it being rated more highly than it probably deserves. Watch the over 40 years old Blazing Saddles if you want to see a movie that does it right.

Knives out is advertised as a whodunit movie. In a way it sort of is but this is Rian Johnson, he loves subverting expectations. Seriously though, this movie really subverts a lot of expectations. It's better to go into this movie with littleKnives out is advertised as a whodunit movie. In a way it sort of is but this is Rian Johnson, he loves subverting expectations. Seriously though, this movie really subverts a lot of expectations. It's better to go into this movie with little to no knowledge which is why it is difficult to review this without giving away too much.

First off, this movie has an amazing cast with Daniel Craig pulling off an American accent as the private investigator. Chris Evans post Avengers work has him play a much more terrible character which is a huge contrast to Captain America. Christopher Plummer while a minor role gives a very lovable mystery novelist. Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson and Toni Colette give a very convincing performance as egotistic rich snobs. Ana de Armas must be praised as well for being able to convincing give the audience a sort of POV character in this massive all star cast. I will also give props to Lakeith Stanfield, Katherine Langford, Jaeden Martell and Noah Segan as well as they did a great job as well. The story and the screenplay is just phenomenal with the witty and charming dialogue. Likewise, the twist are smart and really keep the audience on its toes.

I do struggle to find negatives but I guess the one and only true blatant negative is the very obvious political message. "Right white conservative" are bad. The movie doesn't emphasise it a lot but there are scenes where is delves into these such as immigration and having the white rich characters talk quite negatively about it. Likewise emphasising how the children of Christopher Plummer's character have not earned anything of their own legitimately or have been given massive money to earn anything. It's a very simple and obvious message that anyone can see throughout the entire film. Additionally, maybe the misleading advertisement can be quite a deterrent to some viewers. As stated at the beginning, Rian Johnson completely flips the Whodunit genre on its head but the trailers and advertisement suggest it is just a typical whodunit story when it really isn't. To me this isn't exactly a negative but it could be seen as such to other viewers. In conclusion, this is a must watch to everyone. It is such an entertaining movie and is a great reminded of films from the old Hitchcock days. While the director's previous work, The Last Jedi, was divisive; This movie is amazing. Give it a watch!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Knives Out is a tense movie reminiscent of Clue, but for the modern era. There are plenty of twists and turns that keep the movie suspenseful, while benefiting the pacing of the movie. The lead actress Ana de Armas and lead actor Daniel Craig do a great job of providing a nice contrast between seriousness and keeping the silliness of these kind of movies. I greatly enjoyed trying to solve the mystery as the clues unfolded, much like Clue or a Scooby Doo episode. Well worth the watch! Expand

It is strange, and it seems meaningless, that a writer who made a fortune by writing detectives does not know this. It makes no sense to make Martha once again “dance” in front of a crowd of potential witnesses, if you could spend two minutes spending her and returning to your room to lie on the sofa, taking the syringe in your hand. It makes no sense to ignore the testimony of the servant. It makes no sense not to seize the opportunity and ask Martha if she knows who the killer is. It makes no sense to go in white sneakers, stained with the blood of the murdered for a week. There is no point in the physiological features of the main character, because she successfully lies without it. There is no point in returning to sweep tracks with medicines, because in this case all possible suspicions from Martha will be removed. It makes no sense to burn the laboratory, the corpse is not far. It makes no sense to dissuade Martha from returning the money. It makes no sense to blackmail Ransom, because there is no murder. "That certainly not what I was expecting."

- Whodunit?
- Rian Johnson.
- Why?
- To subvert the tropes of yet another sub-genre... properly!

As divisive as it was, I neither loved nor hated the love-it-or-hate-it The Last Jedi. Maybe because I'm not a huge fan of the much-beloved saga. But I can give you a quick opinion of what I thought about it anyway. The first half almost turned me off completely: tons of lame jokes and out-of-character moments that indicate that Johnson's biggest concern was to subvert expectations and nothing but. The second half of the film was way better. It proved to me that Johnson is actually very capable of adding fresh blood to the saga, so effortlessly to such an extent that I wondered why he struggled so much in the first half.

In Knives Out, Johnson didn't add a new spin on the 'whodunit' sub-genre of detective fiction; he took it and turned it on its head. He did so not only by playing with the tropes and mechanisms of this sub-genre -and boy, he did that so exquisitely and gracefully- but he also by using a new and very effective building block: Drama. It doesn't sound new, isn't it? But, actually, relying on it here, in this kind of a story, is nothing short of revolutionary, and that's simply lies in the fact it's unprecedented to build upon it here. The result is nothing but marvellous. And although that, at some point, the main concern of the plot wasn't the murder mystery per se, the mystery didn't lose its sharpness even a tiny bit. And that's a strong proof that everything worked, and integrated, seamlessly. I said integrated because the film has a plethora of comedic bits throughout its runtime -which flies by- and, to be honest, I think every single joke landed perfectly. The film also suggest a political agenda that's exquisitely woven into the plot, and provides a sharp social commentary that's impressively subtle.

Not only did Rian Johnson reinvigorate this seemingly outmoded and unfruitful sub-genre, but he also did the same thing with a couple of members of the star-studded cast: I didn't know that Chris Evans, Captain America himself, would be better as, well, an "Anti-Captain America "; Craig as Blanc is absolutely phenomenal, with his southern accent and caricature detective character; and Jaeden Martell (IT) is very interesting as the weirdo Jacob Thrombey. As for Curtis, Langford, Plummer, Collette and Shannon, Johnson makes an excellent use of their incredible acting abilities, and of their facial expressions and features, especially Shannon with his remarkable menacing countenance. The real standout, though, is Ana de Armas. I mean, she was good in Blade Runner 2049, but here, as she plays my new favourite version of Pinocchio, she proves she's an exceptionally talented actress who is capable of expressing emotions, and changing them readily, only with her eyes. Honestly, I think she should have been nominated for an Oscar!

Overall, I'm really surprised how much I loved this film. With Johnson superb and clever direction and meticulously-nuanced and witty -albeit slightly too-structured- screenplay, I think this is my favourite - even if it's not my highest-rated - film of 2019. You know what, this film is actually terrible: it's very pretentious; its puzzle is too convoluted for its own good; it has an overabundance of plot twists; it underutilized its stellar ensemble; and it has a lot of plot holes, or -in this case- donut holes! Excuse me, I gotta leave right now!

When Rian Johnson is in charge of writing and directing a production, I have an intuition that the film will do wonderfully well. And really, this is what happened. But we have a problem here.
As we all know, Rian Johnson is known for its famous twists in the film. This happened in 'The Last Jedi' and it happens here ALMOST ALL THE TIME. The first two times, the twists are shocking and make the viewer frustrated, but soon after the twists no longer shock and lose all their charm.
Thanks to that, the film will not win my 10, but it came very close.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Knives Out was a super engaging movie and with an amazing plot. I didn’t want the movie to ever end multiple times throughout the movie. The actors were all very good and they were pretty funny. The Cinematography was beautiful and the use of foreshadowing and subtle symbols in the movie was really smart. At the beginning of the movie, Harlan Thrombey said something about not being able to distinguish a real knife from a prop knife and in one of the last scenes, Ransom uses a fake knife when trying to kill Marta. Almost as if Harlan planned the whole thing like one of his books. The baseball that was on Harlan’s desk also took a wild trip throughout the film, being passed by many people, and eventually landed back where is was in the beginning. This is analogous to Gravity’s Rainbow as Detective Benoit said his working process was like: “The projectile’s path can be traced and calculated and he is there waiting for the truth to land at his feet.”

One part of the movie that I did not really like was the generic characters. They really didn’t have much depth it seemed. Marta was a shy, truthful girl, Ransom was an entitled, **** son, the detective was a cunning, handsome man, and so on. It seemed like none of the characters had any depth. Even the kids in the movie were called each other stereotypical names: alt right troll and liberal snowflake. I wanted the characters to develop but they never did it seemed like. Marta never overcame her visceral reaction to lying, she was just able to hold her vomit in longer.

The dialogue was really quick and intelligent. I really liked the banter that the members of the Thrombey family had with each other and it kept the scenes suspenseful yet funny. The sequence of scenes when the will was about to be read to the family was my favorite of the movie. The dialogue was really good and we got to see each character’s personality come out and it was a major turning point in the movie when Marta got all of the inheritance.

S2S: What is Thanksgiving without families coming together, airing their drama and disdain and a little bit of MURDER! Yes, Knives Out provides us with not a movie that reminds of morals behind the season, giving thanks, loving family, and fun and games like Mafia and WHO DONE IT?!

TF: I hear you there. Rian Johnson’s Knives Out is mainly style over substance. It is like Johnson decided to write and direct a less serious, contemporary version of Murder on the Orient Express, which had a remake in 2017. You may hear a lot of comparisons to that movie. Knives Out’s plot is both familiar and convoluted; but, it doesn’t mean it is not worthy of a viewing.

S2S: Knives Out is described by Lionsgate as “When renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) is found dead at his estate just after his 85th birthday, the inquisitive and debonair Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is mysteriously enlisted to investigate. From Harlan’s dysfunctional family to his devoted staff, Blanc sifts through a web of red herrings and self-serving lies to uncover the truth behind Harlan’s untimely death.” After that I can’t give much more without dropping a spoiler. But this puts us in a perfect position to discuss.

S2S: Knives Out is jammed packed with a star-studded ensemble. Jamie Lee Curtis, Daniel Craig, Chris Evans who all do a really solid job portraying their individual characters. Sidenote: each individual character couldn’t get anymore stereotypical or carbon copy to previous mystery movies. Daniel Craig’s southern drawl was quite amazing, even if offensive to the Colonel. Throughout the movie, the cast gave moments of convincing and captivating performances. Especially, the relative newcomer to the acting world Ana de Armas, who played Marta, had times where she wasn’t put in the shadow of the other looming superstars in the cast. Interestingly enough, another star cast could’ve done this movie and it wouldn’t be the same at all. Either way, the cast/movie has charm and is entertaining.

TF: I agree that the cast is star-studded and these actors are clearly having a great time playing these characters. I love Daniel Craig in this role. It feels rare that we see him stretch like this and it’s fun. However, I do think his Benoit Blanc is somehow both too broad and not broad enough. I was getting Inspector Clouseau vibes, but I wanted more daffy antics. Also, Christopher Plummer, Chris Evans and Jamie Lee Curtis are sinking their teeth into these mysterious Thrombey family members. Michael Shannon, as Harlan’s son benefiting from nepotism, and Toni Collette, as a scheming daughter-in-law, are chewing scenery left and right. There’s consistent great energy when these actors are on the screen.

S2S: Unfortunately, the cast doesn’t wholly save this movie. There are so many plot holes in the script or the editing that we left the theater saying, “just pretend like that made sense” or “they forgot all about that”. It’s almost like it was a donut with hole in the middle, another donut. The storyline in itself is not original but the way the story is told saves that in a way. It felt as if I was being read one of Harlan’s books, which is great but it felt as long as one of Harlan’s books as well. This movie drug on way too long. I felt okay checking my phone because I knew the end was imminent even though the biggest secret and reveal wasn’t complete.

TF: Yes, but don’t leave out the set design. The production design of the house is outstanding. Everywhere you look, there are knick-knacks and interesting set pieces. A huge portrait of Christopher Plummer as Harlan looms over a room in the house as the patriarch’s presence does in the family. The structure of the home itself is a marvel. Lastly, I will mention that at times the music is very gripping. There are some strings striking at one point that were accenting tension. These parts of the production really help things come together.

TF: But you’re right the real problem is that ultimately the mystery isn’t great. The plot points are kind of obvious and then become convoluted, if you try to unpack it. Knives Out feels maybe 20 minutes too long. There’s so much going on in order to build to the conclusion that the movie loses some steam along the way. I wanted more comedy than mystery since the mystery wasn’t very mysterious.

S2S: With that said, Knives Out is clever and entertaining at times, but isn’t worth the time in the theater. The movie may be worth matinee money but ultimately this is a perfect FX or Netflix movie. Something you watch once and then can leave on in the background. TF: Knives Out is fun and has some smart moments. This cast is the reason to stick with the movie to the end. The real question is does the cast do enough to elevate the middling plot. I would be on board for another Benoit Blanc movie in the future.

This modern take on the class whodunit genre is refreshing and risky. By playing with a well established format, Johnson is able to create a film that kept me interested and entertained throughout. That is not to say that this a film for everyone. Members of the party I saw this film with found it to be inferior to past works in the genre.

Where the film falls short for me is, as mentioned above, this movie thinks that it is very clever when in reality, it is not nearly as clever as it thinks it is. The twists are a bit predictable and that made for an underwhelming third act. Johnson's directing is for the most part great, but at times it feels like the film is giving the audience too many clues as to what is going on exactly.

The biggest strength of this movie is its acting. Its ensemble cast makes for several great performances. Craig's and de Armas' in particular stand out to me. Johnson's script is serious when it needs to be while at the same time having comical elements that do not feel out of place. Having been disappointed by the way humor was implemented into Johnson's last film, The Last Jedi, I was very pleased to see a far more effective use of it in this film.

Overall, I found Knives Out to be a very entertaining mystery film that was not afraid to play with the format of the class whodunit. The twists are a bit too obvious and the movie is not nearly as clever as it seems to think it is, but both of those factors did little to true damper by enjoyment of this film. While certain moviegoers may have problems with the writing or directing of this film, I would recommend it on the strength of the acting alone.

As oneRian Johnson may not be the next Spielberg or, dare I say it, a 'Chris Nolan', but the writer director has a certain whimsy and playfulness missing from many film makers these days. Plus the fact that he simply does whatever he wants. As one of the main film makers behind the current Star Wars trilogy, he is the exact opposite to Abrams. Whilst Abrams sensibility is to mimic, Johnson's approach is to simply go the opposite way. Hence, this particular twist to the 'who dunnit' genre. Populated by some of the best actors in the business, Knives Out is loads of fun, and extremely well acted. Being released in the same period as the Rise of Skywalker, it is simply a commentary of the state of film goers these days: if you want a 'left field, meta approach' to your entertainment, don't tinker with a legacy franchise like Star Wars. Knives Out is a wildly creative, fun and, yes, subversive whodunnit murder mystery! Knives Out features and excellent ensemble cast and a compelling narrative filled with twists and turns! One of the most entertaining, politically/socially relevant and original films I saw this year. It’s nice to have a mystery movie not based on a book so everyone doesn’t already know who did it going in. I actually don’t know how much I want to say about this movie, there’s not much I can really say about it without giving away major spoilers. I’d say just go out and see it for yourself. It’s really good, you’ll have a TON of fun! Get to the theatre early, it’s still selling out over a month after releasing! I’m so happy it’s doing so well, it’s a real crowd pleaser. I guess it really was Star Wars fans that were the problem after all. Good to know. Expand

A very pretentious, bloated film that is trying to be tongue in cheek while unsubtly pushing its moralistic "message" about immigration and resorting to the same trope as "Get out" about "white guilt".
The whodunnit is mostly boring, as in all detective stories. The genius of Agatha Christie or Arthur Conan Doyle was to all so subtly question "Britishness" and its pragmatism, its empiricism and confront continental/French rationalism. It was the clash between Poirot or Holmes with the British police that made it so interesting. The social critique was secondary.
Here we are left with a vague, inaccurate and pretentious "Go game" parable and an ultimate moralistic rubbish "you won by having a good heart". PS: What I find very ironic is how this kind of movie makes fun about the hypocrisy of "white" liberals towards immigration, while I am sure Messrs James Bond guy, Captain America guy and consorts feel so smug and self-satisfied about this film... while probably having in their employ a few servants and modern serfs on meager wages toiling for them directly and indirectly.

It was called Murder on the Orient Express that time around. This time, Rian Johnson gives you what he normally has to offer. Something pro looking for the people that just can't do the new-wave of cinema. This is a great film for people that don't like when movies just end (and need something bluntly climactic), getting annoyed at the open endings of 'No Country For Old Men', 'There Will Be Blood', any Spring Breakers, etc etc... It might be stylized to the tune of a 2019 film, but just as in 'Brick', Johnson cannot for the life of him decide what kind of reality this takes place in. Is it ours? One might get the feeling that it's meant to be a hyper-realistic play on our reality with a little Hollywood action spice. Not a bad recipe if you do it right. Johnson does not do it right. This film, just like 'Brick' creates a reality that is surely having an identity crisis. Good angular editing with some imagery that is more so eye grabbing than it is specifically profound. Michael Shannon I feel is held back by the script. And Daniel Craig really could have pulled off something great if it wasn't so flat as a whole. I feel bad at the great work put in by some of these amazing actors, all falling flat on such a script. - Another relic re-birthed for a new generation. You might see it up for some hokey awards like the Oscars or Globes, ones that are televised and who's purpose is to rake in ratings (money). Alas it is too two dimensional to be winning things at Cannes or big time fests. This will be one of those films that will be on weekend non-cable channels all the time, in about 10 years. This is the type of movie I say might not be a waste of money, but it certainly won't cut the test of time. Go to Lumet for than. Rian Johnson; another swing and a miss! Expand

This film is an amazing illustration of a generation gap.

This "clue" type mystery is one that was worn out and beaten to death by the 70s and 80s but is something this current generation is completely unfamiliar with. Hence why so many reviewers are fawning over this as "slick, clever, smart" etc Its simply a matter that they themselves have not seen this sort of film mystery.

However if you did live through those eras and saw these types of films you would see that all Knives out is is a poorly crafted and generic imitation of far better whodunit mysteries.

The characters are hollow caricatures with no depth. Casting was surprising but not for good reasons. Has beens like Jaime Lee Curtis and Don Johnson using the film trying to make a comeback, Mostly nobodies that you have never heard of, a few neverweres Like Shannon and the lead character you will think is just Miley Cyrus faking a Latino accent. Then there is Daniel Craig basically doing his best imitation of Frank Underwood minus the megalomania.

The biggest problem is that it is for all intents a Disney film in the sense that Disney influences abound, despite not being directly associated with the #EvilestCorporationOnEarth. From the presence of "Captain America" to being Written, directed and produced by Rian Johnson you begin to see that Disney influence. It is bland, depthless, bottom feeding cud that does nothing new, exhibits no originality and panders to the lowest common denominator for fear of producing something that wasn't predictable within the first 30 minutes.

Dont get me wrong, Ive spent far more time with far worse offerings but between being generic, derivative and predictable this is not an enjoyable thing to watch.

Strongly reminiscent of classic British tea-and-biscuits murder mysteries (think Midsommer Murders, Death In Paradise or any of the myriad Agatha Christie adaptations) with a memorable victim, a massive inheritance, a stately home full of suspects with motives that emerge piece by piece, capped off by Daniel Craig's quirkily New Orleans-ish accented consulting detective Benoit Blanc and Ana de Armas' wide-eyed and innocent-seeming undocumented migrant nurse Marta Cabrera. The old-fashioned stately home and the traditional battle for the inheritance sits very neatly alongside up-to-the-minute concerns such as attitudes towards migrants and teenagers tweeting alt-right memes from the toilet.

It's hard to give a proper review of a whodunit without giving away too much, suffice to say that from very early on in the film we shift from trying to figure out who they are and what they dun to wondering if they can get away with what they dun, a welcome twist on what could have been a highly orthodox mystery plot.

An absolute blast of a film.

We could have had something amazing like this as well for Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker if Rian Johnson would have been directing it again, but instead we got the J.J. Abrams mess, as if the first one would not have been a warning to not use Abrams for anything anymore.
I wish Rian Johnson all the best for his future projects. I am quite sure I will see all of them.

The story gives you the classic "this is my main suspect" phenomena to pick your guilty party when you conduct your own "investigation" during the dialogues, but obviously you can't be sure if you're right or wrong. Cleverly giving out clues during the story progression makes you realize that you may be wrong all along.
I can't remember a period during the movie when I didn't have to pay attention. Everything the characters say and do on screen, adds up to the greater picture.
Great cast and performance from all the actors involved. Excellent entertainment for 2 hours. Well written, great directing along with great music. If you want something different, I highly recommend to check this one out.

A decent whodunnit with a stellar cast of characters. I had some issues with the film overall but it's very much worth a watch, I don't think it has as much bite as Rian Johnson's previous works such a Looper, Brick or The Last Jedi

As was often present in the unquestionably joyous conversation surrounding his "Star Wars" flick, Rian Johnson's affinity for "subverting expectations" can sometimes spell trouble for moviegoers. This time around, though, I feel that each development and event is more warranted, considering the refreshingly original, "preconceived-notion-less" narrative in play. Implementing each twist only minutes after meeting this world and these characters makes total sense. Show the audience what they're in for early -- when they're impressionable -- and you have a better shot at keeping them along for the ride. And, man, what a ride it is. As far as sequences of events go, simply on paper, this has to be one of the most intricately constructed narratives of the year. And, as a screenplay, it's still particularly enthralling, even if it ventures a bit too far into "I'm a movie that takes place in the current year" land from time to time. In short, "Knives Out" is a massive pendulum swing in the right direction for me when it comes to Rian Johnson and the movies I want to see him craft. Expand

I was so impressed with his work on The Last Jedi so i decided to see Knives Out. It surpassed all expections. I was completely engaged the whole time, i felt like i was experiencing everything unfold right along with the characters. Also, I think it was an important movie in todays world. There are so many people that cling to their racism and xenophobia and hate and people need to realize how it affects innocent people who are human just like us. THANK YOU Rian Johnson. Your passion and love that goes into your movies is SEEN and appreciated. Its so human and thats why it connects so well with me. I plan on seeing it again tomorrow. Expand

“This case is like a donut

Actually,
it's a donut within a donut's hole.”

‘Knives Out’ subverted my expectations...in a good way. A smartly written whodunit movie that manages to be both humorous and classy. The kind of murder mystery that never fails to entertain. Pleasing both cinephiles and mainstream audiences. Perfectly balance, as all things should be. It basically pulls a Hitchcock on us.

Rian Johnson is a great director, but at times has silly ideas. On the other hand, when given the right material I think he’s a great director and writer. He’s also a clever man, but never came off as annoying. The dialogue was so sharply written that I could tell the cast loved every minute of soaking up and delivering these lines. The cinematography was nothing short but beautiful and will often linger in rooms of the house which helps the audience immerse in the overall setting.

One of the tightest scripts of the year with raw humor and a satisfying mystery/comedy.

The cast is stellar, but the main stand outs for me were Daniel Craig, Ana de Armas, and Chris Evans. I loved Daniel Craig’s Southern drawl which I didn’t expect at first, but I was amazed of how far he went for it. Often times it reminded me of Frank Underwood from ‘House of Cards’. He plays detective Benoit Blanc, AKA CSI: KFC. At one point during the movie he delivers one of the funniest monologues in the entire movie, which was brilliantly delivered by Craig. He should seriously try out more comedy roles.

Dose anyone remember when Ana de Armas starred in Eli Roth’s ‘Knock Knock’? Well look at her now. She was absolutely excellent in this movie. The running joke throughout the entire movie is her character can’t lie and whenever she dose, she vomits on the spot. How ironic, yet I love the comedic irony behind it.

Chris Evans plays a spoiled child with a slimy grin during the worst situations. The over privilege black sheep of the family. This is very against type for Evans, especially when his character hates dogs, which I would imagine being difficult for Evans since he’s a dog lover in real life. Also the different sweaters he wears in every scenes was impeccable.

The rest of the cast manage to shine individually in this crowded movie. Although at times some of them felt like background wall paper compared to others. However that never takes away from what else ‘Knives Out’ has to offer.

Toni Collette dose a great impression of Gwyneth Paltrow. Michael Shannon plays a wimpy son to a crime-writer Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer). Despite the small screen time, Plummer is still charming as always. While Jamie Lee Curtis and her character brings the dramatic elements into play. She’s uninterested in the humorous quarrel during the grim situation, as early on she reminds everyone that her father just died.

Judging it as a whodunit mystery, the pay off itself is slick. The events leading to the death are revealed early into the movie, and instead Johnson remains steps ahead from the audience. There’s an underlining social commentary beneath the foul play. The themes of privilege and underprivileged with the sour taste of bitterness throughout. Nothing deep or new, but at least is trying to say something rather than being one thing.

Overall rating: My House. My Rules. My Coffee!!!

In Writer/Director Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out,” the whole is less than the sum of its parts. But there are so many parts – actors, plot twists – that the whole thing still works, sorta.

Writer Johnson (“Brothers Bloom,” “Looper,” “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”) clearly has taken delight in creating a puzzle box of a movie that’s filled with twists, turns, ambiguities and misunderstandings. To celebrate his 85th birthday, Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) invites his extended family to a celebration at his estate. But wait: nearly everybody has just been cut out of the will. In a staggeringly unpredictable development, by the end of the evening, Thrombey is dead. The subsequent investigation is complicated by the fact that most members of Thrombey’s family seem both loathsome and self-absorbed enough to have done the deed. The only exception to this pageant of narcissism is Marta, Thrombey’s nurse/caregiver/friend, who apparently would have to take a demotion to become Mother Teresa. Complications ensue. The game is afoot. Other clichés follow.

These convolutions are examined and explored by private detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig), whose keen mind will leave no stone unturned and whose Southern accent will leave no syllable undrawled. One character even questions whether this is “CSI: KFC.” It’s all great fun.

Director Johnson has at his disposal an embarrassment of riches. In addition to Craig, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Chris Evans and Toni Collette are all elegant pieces on this three-dimensional chess board. Frank Oz even takes a break from breathing life into Miss Piggy and Fozzie Bear to portray a reasonably life-like attorney. With so many of these actors playing against type, the pleasure they all take in this enterprise is almost palpable. However, it’s Ana de Armas (“Blade Runner 2049,” “War Dogs”) as Marta who most fully commands attention. De Armas will next be seen alongside Craig in the 2020 James Bond installment “No Time to Die.” Get used to seeing her. She’ll be in at least four major films next year.

What doesn’t work in this film is the tone. For the most part, the film strives to be a worthy installment in the tradition of the Agatha Christie who-dunnit genre, a goal at which it generally succeeds. However, there also is enough time spent burnishing the image of the “new immigrant” and chronicling the evils of the entitled – both themes explored repeatedly, repetitively, repetitiously, redundantly – that the detective story sometimes stalls a little. Is this social commentary or farcical fun?

On the whole, though, this is entertainment that’s worth your time, if only to see Daniel Craig temporarily trade in his medium dry martini, shaken not stirred, for a mint julip.

Knives Out is about solving the murder of Harlan, a successfull fiction writer who's wealth only seemed to increase the gap between him and his family. To keep it short: The movie is very funny, with many different intriguing characters that all seem to have a reason to dislike Harlan, and Daniel Craig portrays a funny private detective that has a nose for people and their intensions.

I really liked the movie! I was thoroughly entertained, laughed a lot and i can recommend it to other people. I give it a 9/10.

The only real problem is its quite bloated, at 2 hours 10 minutes, it really stretches a plot out a few twists too many. If it was a crisp 95 minutes it would have been my favorite movie of the year. If you were not a big fan of The Last Jedi then I urge you to check this film out and see that Rian Johnson is a more capable director when he is working on his own. It’s a film with issues that are minor and were the only issues I had with the film. The film does have some political subtext to it which I liked but there were some areas where it was a little on the nose. It didn’t take me out of the movie but I wished it had been handled a little better. This movie has a bunch of A-list actors and they all bring their A-game. Every performance in this movie is pretty great but Daniel Craig, Chirs Evans, and Ana de Armas steal every scene they are in. It can be a little hard to get used to Craig’s heavy southern drawl at first but you eventually get used to it. Chris Evans is a nice counterweight to everyone’s craziness. I felt he was one of the funniest characters in the movie except for one joke. Ana de Armas is a great protagonist to follow throughout the film along with Daniel Craig. All 3 of them disappear into their roles and portray their characters almost perfectly. It’s a great redemption film for Chris Evans from Red Sea Diving Resort. The script is pretty great. There are tons of clues hidden beneath each line of dialogue and it all feels very natural. This allows for Johnson’s comedic writing to shine. He is able to cleverly insert jokes that most of the time are pretty hilarious. The reason the comedy didn’t work that well in The Last Jedi for me was that it felt forced and didn’t always align well with the tone but the comedy shines here because it fits the film’s tone perfectly. While not every joke is hilarious, a majority of them are. The jokes that go along with certain characters fit their character pretty well. Some of the funniest lines in the movie are delivered by Michael Shannon and Daniel Craig because the jokes they tell perfectly fit their characters. The story is fairly simple but Rian Johnson throws a lot of simple twists throughout that makes it feels unique. The film decides to reveal what actually happened to the victim halfway through the film and it turns into a cover up which then progresses to a pretty major twist that I never saw coming but felt necessary and made sense to the narrative. The music was also pretty good. It added tension and was interesting to listen to while the events unfolded. Overall, Knives Out is a great murder mystery with great performances, a great script, hilarious jokes, and some interesting twists. Expand
