So the best thing to do is to let the movie sink in as I try to let my thoughts of the film come together and after thinking about for awhile, this movie Terrence Malick weakest film.

I don't know how many times I praised Emmanuel Lubezki for his work on cinematography and in this movie he shines once again. Every shot and every frame in this movie made me say "Wow". The movie is so magnificently shot that it's like The Tree of Life in where I couldn't take my eyes off the screen.

Unfortunately, this is the movie that Terrence Malick goes too full of himself and so may say that he went too full of himself in Tree of Life, but I think he didn't, at least I had a gasp on whats going and what Malick was going for. There are some unnecessary close ups of random people and a lot mumbling monologues from are character's. I didn't enjoy this one as much but at least it's pretty to look at.

Terrence Malick is more in need of a writer, an editor, and a boss to tell him "umm no" than any other filmmaker in history. Someone hasn't went off the rails like this since George Lucas gave us those awful Star Wars prequels.

One of the all-time worst films! Some of the cinematography was okay, but this turgid MESS with no story or commendable acting added to LOUSY direction ... spare the audience! They were walking out after twenty minutes!

This movie was so bad that I ended up walking out of it. The plot is dull, and the film is so confusing that it makes the film a pain to watch. Don't waste your time or money on this film.

Knight of Cups would easily end up being on my list of movies I'd only see once and never again after a couple of months. Why is that you may ask? It's a bit complicated but it seems that they tried too hard with this one.

Oy, such a sad long story..
A nice man has too much money & time on his hands--gets involved with a bunch of goyishe women...
This man wouldn't know of commitment if it bit him in the tuische!
Oy, even Natalie Portman, the jewish gal whose married no less, gets involved with this lost soul of a no goodnik;
She ends up crying, probably an abortion, a real shonda, gevalt.

Swimming pools, beaches everywhere, beautiful skinny models, beautiful clothing, desrts, cactus. Oy.
The movie is an hour too long, yeh, yeh, beautiful scenery, coulda been just one long perfume commercial .

And you can't understand a word; that's called art!?
A person can't make out a whole sentence mumbled under his breathe.
Gevalt.. He has all his fancy friends in the movie for one minute apiece. What's a matter?
Is dis a real movie or a home movie mascarading as a big deal?
Nu, another big mess, passing as a big deal.
Good for a housewife while she does he housework--if you miss a few minutes no big loss.

This guy Malick has too much money or too many rich friends in high places.
Probably a nice man, he should get a real job & stop making so-called Art filmz.

He needs a yiddishe cup & not a Knight of Cups. I paid $8.50 for this? At least I got my senior discount!

(Oy, Mickie Lasalle--our local reviewer-SF Chronicle--he needs psychotherapy & a few jewish friends ...)

This movie is so bad I'm writing this as its playing in the theater. What a waste of money. Do not waste your money on this garbage. How someone have some guy money to make this, baffles me.

Perhaps Malick's best film (despite its excessive length), Knight of Cups was easily the most underrated film of 2016, far better than La La Land and most of the other Oscar contenders.

A film of the genre "Terrence Malik". Like his other films he is about finding oneself, finding a way, loving, living, understanding the meaning and yourself.

Knight of Craps = Shift + delete

As for me, this director is done. His last best film was 'The New World'. I don't know why someone keeps financing him. It is neither an art and message film, nor has any entertainment value. In one word, total-crap. All the above, these actors agreeing to do the roles. Definitely this director's films have received more boos at Cannes than any others. Not fit for film festivals, as well as theatrical releases. The surprise part was, I saw it. Even after I felt a similar way for his previous film.

There's no story. Just a random acts. Even documentary films have a better narrative. Remember a film was being made by Willem Dafoe in the film 'Mr. Bean's Holiday', this is exactly the same film. Except there's no Mr. Bean/Atkinson here to make it a cheerful additional editing. It was like the director woke up in the morning and decided to do what he felt to shoot without a script.

I dislike whispering background narration. It is like a lullaby, one might fall into sleep. Not just asleep, but a deep sleep. Direct dialogues between the characters are like an oasis in this film. If you have nothing to do and ready for a slow film, you should not consider it then too, because it is not a film, but a two hour long torture. Easily skippable film.

Emmanuel Lubezki's cinematography looks as stunning as always and the big-name cast at least kept things somewhat interesting. Unfortunately, the same can't be said of the film's story or sense of direction (most of the time it felt like it had none.) Overall, this one is strictly for Malick's most loyal fans, although even they, much like myself, may have a difficult time grasping what the film tries to communicate. As far as I'm concerned, The Tree of Life is still my favorite film of Malick's hands down! Obviously, this doesn't come anywhere near the beauty and brilliance of that film; however, for what it's worth, in my opinion, this is a slight step above To the Wonder. Expand

Why cant proper critics, be proper critics anymore?. I mean, every hate review is basically a "i'm-not-getting-what-i-want-from-this-movie" rant, failing to say what's actually wrong with the film itself. If you need narrative, read a novelWhy cant proper critics, be proper critics anymore?. I mean, every hate review is basically a "i'm-not-getting-what-i-want-from-this-movie" rant, failing to say what's actually wrong with the film itself. If you need narrative, read a novel or a chronicle. Film is primarily a visual medium. There are many examples of (seemingly) plotless films that are considered masterpieces like 2001, 8 1/2, La Dolce Vita, Last Yeat at Marienbad, and a bunch more. Personally, I'm glad that films like Knight of Cups are being produced, after all, narrative films are being produced in the hundreds a year and most of the them are dull as hell.
The film is about an existential crisis, about everything that surrounds the character, and it's repetitive because LIFE is repetitive, it's shallow because the way of life of the character (and most people) is shallow. Ever felt that there's always something missing in your life? Well, this film is about that and more.
Everybody will have this sort of existential crisis weather it is when your facing death or when you're 30 or 50, so in that aspect this film is universal and important IMO.
Oh, last but not least, this film is definitely not as intellectual as it seems to be. Viewers just need an open mind to feel it and understand it.?

This is simply Malick being Malick, what do you expect- you're either on his wavelength or you're not.
Love it or hate it

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Relationship to the truth: not true. The Knight of Cups is a tarot card.
Description: someone struggling for perspective. A difficult patch.
Reaction: I don't think that I can do much, except react to the overall tone. It is sort of, man as mood. Christian Bale doesn't often speak, merely looks. He is almost as much a passive observer of his life, as an audience is.

It does demand to be taken seriously, which ... isn't necessarily the pathway to being serious.

It does convey a self of social alienation. This drift between groups of people - and girlfriends- that could make me feel almost seasick. I read a review that said, it is almost a perfume add- and. Yes, there is a whiff (!) of that- C.B. always wearing Giorgio Armani suits, cavorting with skinny actresses on a beach.

The sickness sort of... passes? at the end, does it. When his father offers him words of thanks and praise. Visit a priest.

It was not a disaster. The role of women in the piece... Women do tend to be skinny models. Or his mum.

Wit attempt. It is a bit, The Dark Knight of Cups- Batman is finally mollified, by a seemingly endless stream of beautiful women.

Thank you.
Does it use beautiful people to get your attention? Yes. Or rather, the people must be beautiful, because otherwise you couldn't make a point about having it all, but still feeling out of sorts.

What a boring, narcissistic load of dribble this movie is.
Outside of going on one big ego trip, I have no idea what Malick is trying to achieve here.
