She overhears an assault on a woman via someone's Kimi and decides to get involved, regardless of what others signal or tell her, regardless of her phobias, regardless of everything, she sacrifices her life and others for an assumption of what she hears for a 5-sec span on a stranger's Kimi. I went through all that to show why you don't really care about her, she's acting outside the bounds of a realistic character and where does that usually lead? Right, disappointment. Oh and she does the "Home Alone" bit on some assassins so that's plausible, right? And she's in a mixed race relationship so Hollywood gets their we're-so-progressive bonus. It's another of many, many Covid-era wastes of our time. Expand

Not a thriller! Rather dull less than average movie by Soderbergh. Lack luster acting by Zoe Kravitz.

There's a great cast here and some excellent sound design (the headphones cutting to silence was very effective). Overall production is top tier considering its quick production turn around.

Spoilers ahead but what little that worked well here is sadly and quickly discarded for a cheap and overly unrealistic mary sue murder spree victory finish with literal smiling 'oh, suddenly it seems murdering home invaders with a nail gun was the therapy that cured my agoraphobia ' moment. Although entertaining - couldn't help but feel theres was a massively missed opportunity for something more subtle and meaningful.

Was with it until the third act, and then it just tonally falls apart, it jarringly departs from the tension built in the first two acts and wraps things up with an absurd sequence. A promising film that turns out to be a bit of a wasted opportunity.

Since she'sKimi is a fictional version of Alexa and Zoë Kravitz plays a tech worker whose job is to listen to errors from the app and correct them. One day, she hears a disturbing recording and sets out to discover the misdeed behind it. Since she's also agoraphobic, her drive to uncover the truth causes additional stress, compounded with the fact that someone doesn't want the information divulged. Director Steven Soderbergh has crafted a tight little film that spends the first hour setting up the drama (all in her apartment) before the a mildly tense final act. The paranoia of modern tech, coupled with the lingering effects of the COVID lockdown make it easier to ignore some of the plot machinations that rely on unlikely connections. The soundtrack is reminiscent of Hitchcock thrillers, but this easily-digested little drama doesn't match up to Hitchcock's level of anxiety. Expand

The Steven Soderbergh that gets presented in Kimi, is the Soderbergh that I tend to find really disappointing.
It's when the director just focuses on getting things done quickly without much to explore or salvage in the way of a narrative.

So I'm surprised it's getting good reviews from the professional critics, especially since regardless of the actuality in which the film is set, Soderbergh is basically ripping off De Palma and Hitchcock. If you know your thrillers, you know what movies I'm talking about.

Don't mistake that basic pragmatism for something deeper. This is a terribly mediocre thriller of a technological moral lecture that points nowhere.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Kravitz did an OK job portraying an annoying character you just want to punch in the face. She is mean to people, but it was probably the directors choice to give you a consequence interpretation of her illness.
However, nothing special. Weird camera movements and mediocre script all wrapped in a very low-budget looking movie package
The movie falls completely apart in the end though mainly because of the bad guys in the end. They are probably the worst most amateur idiots i have seen. Makes Harry and Marv almost Mensa members in comparison.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One of the most distractingly unlikable characters ever in a film. Like the auteur tried to make an amalgamation of a 2020 Twitter user except instead of making her have a realistic physique that would actually make her afraid to go outside and catch Covid made her a 100 pound lingerie model. Stop casting “famous” people’s children in film, and let them model for perfume ads or whatever.

And as for her motivation…she repeatedly says she doesn’t like the police or DAs, so what did she want to have happen? A Twitter cancellation for rape and murder? The company to cut off the service?

Soderbergh keeps the film paced nice and quick while Zoe Kravitz's COVID-jaded Angela feels relatable. There are obviously some major plot conveniences (although with it taking place in Seattle, it's not too far-fetched to feature all the main story elements in one city), its ending is pretty silly, and the Kevin character was pretty unnecessary, but otherwise it's hard to truly dislike this film. It will, at the very least, keep you entertained and make for a good and somewhat relatable popcorn thriller. Expand

Her character Angela Childs is one you get annoyed with in the beginning as she is pompous, self-centered, egotistical and just a pain in the rear. As the story progresses, you begin to understand why she carries these traits and not only so you understand her well-being but you then begin to sympathize for what she has to endure. The story itself is well crafted with some minor characters not really pulling their weight but don't really drag the film's overall objective. Much better of a movie than I expected. Mystery even tho it was not that hard to figure out what was gonna happen. Action packed, perfect length of the story and a cast that worked well. Solid movie, would recommend.

For a Foucault in the technological-digital age, Soderbergh tried to dodge the remake of "Enemy of the State" (Sott Jr. 1998) by accepting the script of Koepp, former screenwriter of "Panic Room" (Fincher 2002): the lockdown as a pretext for an Orwellian paranoia in a claustrophobic version complete with a home invasion. The names of the company ("Amygdala") and of a song in the soundtrack ("Connection") are allusive, but please do not blaspheme by bringing up films of much higher caliber ("Rear Window", "The Conversation", "Blow Up").
