He is no longer a friend. I am astonished that people found this film to be "witty" - for 90 minutes the viewer is subjected to unbearable and seemingly endless smart-arse comments in a routine trudge through the familiar old American high school stereotypes. Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse, the closing scene was so cheesy I writhed around in my cinema chair with my hand over my eyes wanting to kill myself. Ellen Page was adorable. All the actors were top-notch. A witty script, I loved the dialogue. I really enjoyed Juno, for the most part. Once Juno's friend said "Oh my blog" instead of "Oh my God", I knew we were going to be irritated to no end, and we certainly were. This movie wants to have the idiosyncratic characters of "Rushmore" and more specifically "Ghost World"-- Juno wishes she were anywhere near as cool as Thora Birch's Enid. This movie lacks subtlety and moreover hits you over the head with its imagined adorable quirkiness, Not only does Juno have a phone shaped like a hamburger but she has a line stating she is on her hamburger phone. It's stuff like that which made this movie excruciating. Thank God for Allison Janney and J.K. Simmons who make the most of their scenes, and are the only ones who actually make their dialogue tolerable. Jennifer Garner's character is sympathetic and relatable-- so much so she seems to be in a different movie altogether. I wouldn't be so incensed about this movie if people weren't hailing it as the second coming of John Hughes, which is blasphemy. By this time next year this movie is going to be dated. Expand

Not every kid is Juno, of course, but what she says comes The vast majority of the movie critics complain about the beginning of the movie (which I thought was fine), and many express some reservations about Juno's string of one-liners. Not every kid is Juno, of course, but what she says comes across to me as completely normal and real. The screenwriter isn't trying to say "Wow I'm amazing, look at all the one-liners I can put together." She's saying, here's this character, and she deals with her world by keeping it at an ironic distance. She's not quite grown up enough to actually handle things, so she uses this half-jokey attitude toward it. Totally believable, totally real. I knew several people like this during high school and college ... didn't you? Not to the same extent, of course; nobody is "on" all the time. For the people who thought the movie was dropping all the names of bands and stuff in an attempt to be cool: I thought exactly the opposite. It is through this shared popular culture that Juno connects with the older guy who never grew up ... and this guy is NOT the hero of the movie. He represents the path not chosen, the Seth-Rogen-in-Knocked-Up guy ... the guy who is NOT right for her. He represents immaturity. And their entire conversation about being uber-hipster also represents immaturity. The point of the conversation isn't dropping names for the sake of dropping names! Those of you who think that's what's going on have completely missed the point of that whole scene. The parents are the most realistic parents I've seen in a teen movie since I don't know when. As a parent of a to-be-teenager-all-too-soon, I appreciated that a lot. The mom told Juno she had no clue what she was getting into with the married guy, and she was right. Unlike most teenage movies, this one reflects reality: teenagers don't quite know what's going on in the world nearly as well as their parents do. Whether a movie is "funny" or not is a matter of taste. I loved Blazing Saddles, some people can't stand it, whatever, you're not going to get anywhere arguing about that sort of thing. Expand

These are all 3 fine films that effortlessly portray strong female characters at multiple ages and classes while also bringing so much more to the table. Although it is not my favourite of the bunch (that would be Waitress) Juno exemplifies a film that flies high on its own adorableness but still shows that it is remarkably self aware, intelligent and funny as hell.
Juno tells the story of (oddly enough) Juno Macguff (Ellen Page who at the age of 16 gets pregnant by her boyfriend Paulie Bleeker (Michael Cera) and decides to give it up for adoption to a middle class couple (Jennifer Garner & Jason Bateman) with the help of her parents (Allison Janney & J.K Simmons).
Page manages to thrive on the incredibly solid script bringing to life the character who is shown to be incredibly smart, independent and authentic. If anything the other cast member who does as good a job is Jennifer Garner who portrays Vanessa so brilliantly that this highly strung, obsessive and quite frankly domineering becomes funny and enchanting. Batemans Mark also brings a commanding performance as a man who just hasn't grown up, with him in some ways being more immature than Juno despite the fact he is 20 years older.
The rest of the cast bring some great comedy to the mix with Simmons and Janney both bringing their great comic timing while also providing a foil for Juno as she struggles with her pregnancy. The scenes between Janney and Page are especially good with displays of such affection handled so delicately and subtly. The film works from a fantastic script and is all brought together by director Jason Reitman who conveys so much through what isn't shown as well as his extremely honest direction of the actors, especially towards the end. Juno does not disappoint at all, in fact its nine months I'd happily watch again and again.

Now, I've heard a lot of good buzz about "Juno" since it's 2007 release, and I've been rather excited to finally see it. First off, I can say that the film itself is pretty good. I enjoyed most of the aspects of it. The acting on all fronts is great. Ellen Page is hilarious as the titular character, and Michael Cera is equally as funny as her awkward friend. The facet of the movie that I admired the most was the film's brilliant, Academy Award-Winning script written by Diablo Cody. I found every line in this movie to be delightfully unique, and Cody's use of modern dialogue devices really helps to give this movie a certain authenticity. Although this movie is labelled a comedy, I found it to be more of a heartfelt drama love story - especially towards the end. Overall, I felt that "Juno" was a very sweet addition to the comedy genre. Expand

This is an example of when less is more. With great originality, it brings to the table the issue of motherhood in adolescence equally seriously, although with discreet touches of comedy. Not to mention the highlights of the performances.

While sometimes it feels like it had more potential and it could of been much funnier than it was, this is a great movie. Ellen Page does perfect and she is part of what makes this movie feel great. It’s heartwarming. Rating - 87%

While it's true that there are too sophisticated dialogues and Juno is not the most attractive or pleasant protagonist, most of the situations are credible and functional and the best thing of all is that the film really followed the voice of its main character and avoided any kind of moralistic comment on teenage pregnancy.

Juno is simply the story of a 16-year-old pregnant woman facing the situation in the best way she found. That is refreshing and not always achieved.

Each one will have their opinion about it and I have mine, but I will keep it to myself, I think this is not the time to talk about it. In any case, the film is neither for nor against. It limits itself to creating a very interesting story around this theme, and the way two young people, clearly unprepared to be parents and who had sex just because of a day of boredom, face the imminent arrival of a baby.

The story is quite good and the script deserved an Oscar, but what stood out the most for me was Ellen Page's superb interpretation. She was an unknown actress until this film and deserved all the recognition she earned. She is simply ultra-convincing in the role of a sixteen-year-old girl, still quite childish in her way of being and thinking, but who is experiencing a moment of maturation by force. I loved the way she spoke using teen slang, and the way her character seems almost unaware of the seriousness of what happened in her life. Michael Cera is also very good, but his character is simply amorphous, he doesn't have half of Juno's sharp and irreverent personality. However, both characters are simply too credible and really look like many teenagers that I have met in my life. Much less credible, for me, was her parents' quiet reaction... most parents would simply have had a heart attack. At that point, the film lost a little bit for me, but maybe it's the difference in cultures that speaks louder.

Technically, the film didn't catch my attention, but I liked the cinematography, the way the film manages to follow the months of pregnancy and give us the perception of the passage of that time and the transformations in the body, life and mentality of young Juno. The sets and costumes are very good, sometimes with some implicit ironic or comic load. The soundtrack is also quite interesting and fits well with the spirit of the film.

And, man, the screenplay really does transfer to the screen perfectly. Everyone looked and acted like I imagined, and the vibe of the movie is the exact same as the screenplay, which doesn't always happen with movies. The dialogue is amusing even when characters are having a normal conversation purely because of Diablo Cody's unique writing style. It's hard to imagine a group of real life people actually talking like her characters, but she makes it believable in the world that she created. It's a simple story but an enjoyable one, and I feel like I could watch this movie any day of the week and have a good time. Expand

A nice little movie about someone who experiences accidentally getting pregnant while also refusing to immediately abort the unborn child, all packaged in a comedic, but also sometimes dramatic way.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Jason Reitman's Juno is a love letter to teenage pregnancy and motherhood, and as a result, a heartfelt piece that will surely tug some heartstrings, whether you're a teenager or an adult. The music was exceptionally significant and captured the mood of the film: cool, calm, and moody. The cinematography was ordinary, and the editing was not bad, although sometimes jumpy, considering the length of the film, I'd say it was pretty okay. The acting was also amazing, especially Garner, Bateman, and of course, Page, who captivates the viewers with her witty and charming appeal. The only problem I had was Michael Cera. Sometimes, it just feels like he does not belong in the film, and it could probably do well without him. And of course, the coherence of the story. There were a lot of unnecessary scenes and characters that ought to be deleted out of the film, which only adds up to a fair convoluted-ness of the plot. Sometimes, the film does not know what it is. A love story? A family story? A story of motherhood? A story of a couple falling apart? The list goes on. However, it all adds up beautifully in the end, despite its apparent flaws. Expand

"Judo" is not an exception to this rule and the subject of the film, the child of reading, is a current and delicate subject. The strong point of the movie can be considered its good script. "Diablo Cody was first persuaded by the film's producer, Mason Novick, who had already signed him for his memoir, to write a screenplay beforehand, which became Juno". He was able to get the Oscar for the best non-adapted screenplay for this film. The film met with good success and received good reviews from critics. Expand
