Not just because Sunshine is the superior movie but Juno has more going for it than just another indie film. Having said that, the reliance on one-liners can become tiresome. Only in Juno's relationship with the adoptive parents and the father of her child does the film come to life and show some true heart. Expand

Diablo Cody wrote a real heartwarming story about a unique girl Juno and her unplanned pregnancy. Ellen Page really deserves the nom for her performance, she's just brilliant. If things don't ring true to most people, then I wish they'd remember this is a movie! It doesn't deal with big political or social or psychological issues. There's no big message being drilled at you contrary to the haters out there, really there isn't. Its entertaining and leaves most folk feeling good for having seen a well crafted story and good performances. PS that Matt Ties is a psycho. Expand

Do we really expect so little of independent film-making that this winds up armed (burdened?) with such critical adulation. The performances range from terriffic (read: Alison Janney, Jennifer Garner, Jason Bateman) to even better (J.K. Simmons and Michael Cera - what impecable comedic timing). Ellen Page makes the best of what is - at times - laborious and contrite dialogue. Diablo Cody stumbles and blurs her way across a fine line: the absurdism is uncomfortably saddled with a slightly saccharine, realist moral. Or perhaps...that is the charm Expand

The people who don't generally see non-mainstream films are the ones who thought Juno was cute, clever, quirky, etc. It was well made, but everything just TRIED too hard. From the soundtrack of the generic "quirky" indie music, to the oh-I'm-so-witty-and-hip dialogue, to the hamburger phone. It just tries too hard! Everything but the performances and direction felt forced. All the scenes, the retorts, the quirky situations-- they were all too calculated, attempting too much to be indie-stylized. The real reason this was nominated for its awards was because it was the only light movie out that people liked enough, and everything else out was much more serious. Honestly, if it weren't for the fact that the Academy needs a non-R rated movie in its Best Picture category, this would not have been nominated. For the truly best indie film of the year, Once is undeniable, though Lars and the Real Girl and Before the Devil Knows You're Dead are excellent choices also. Expand

The supporting cast was perfect: J.K. Simmons and Alison Janney were excellent as Juno's parents, Michael Cera was sweet as the confused boyfriend, and you had to feel sympathetic for Jennifer Garner as the wishful adoptive mother. People, please, don't think too hard during the movie. This is a fun movie that doesn't take itself too seriously. The script, as others have already praised, is witty and clever, thanks to ex-stripper Diablo Cody. Give her credit: it is her first screenplay, for which she won an Oscar for. Anyways, this movie resembles another wonderful indie flick: Little Miss Sunshine. If you liked that indie flick, I can't imagine you won't like this. Expand

I went to see "Juno" twice in theaters. The first time, I thought it was cute, if a little overly cutsie in its supposedly ambitious dialogue attempts (sorry, the line "I need to procure a hasty abortion" is just BAD). The second time, I I went to see "Juno" twice in theaters. The first time, I thought it was cute, if a little overly cutsie in its supposedly ambitious dialogue attempts (sorry, the line "I need to procure a hasty abortion" is just BAD). The second time, I realized that the script wasn't just annoying, it was dreadful. After it came out on DVD, I watched it twice more, attempting to see what Roger Ebert saw. But alas, I don't, and I have gone from disliking it to outright hating it. The characters are awful. Someone as smart as Juno is supposed to be should be a lot more believable in her fear of relationships; instead, she comes off as a hybrid of the worst parts of both Lorelai and Rory Gilmore from "Gilmore Girls." Diablo Cody's script is even more reprehensible, as many of the superb actors in the cast (notably the always-at-least-good Allison Janney) are wasted on a script that, frankly, seems only mildly interested in its own subject matter and more obsessed with being pop-savvy. And then we come to Ellen Page. I have nothing against Ellen Page; I'm simply not convinced she's a good actress. This has nothing at all to do with her acting ability, however. I simply couldn't get over how cute she was in this film. In the beginning, standing with a bottle of Sunny Delight, she's cute. When she's sitting in the abortion clinic, she's cute. When she's waddling around the halls of her high school, she's cute. And when she's bonding with a completely misused Jason Bateman, she's cute. Yet this cuteness underscores the main problem with the movie: It's really cute, but there's nothing behind it. Expand

The entire first half of the film is ludicrous -- hot-screenwriter-of-the-moment Diablo Cody virtually screaming to the audience, "Look, Hollywood, I can write glib hyper-witticisms as well as anybody!" Sitcom-y and self-conscious screenwriting at its absolute worst. The movie actually improved quite a bit in the second half when it got a little more serious and earnest, and the screenplay finally turns down the relentless "snappy" one-liners a bit. I couldn't stand the smarmy, too-cool-for-the-room Juno character throughout, but there are some good supporting bits by the likes of Jason Bateman, Jennifer Garner and Michael Cera that redeem the film somewhat. As usual, the 'burbs are portrayed as a spiritual no-man's-land where all your dreams go to die, and the entire film is soundtracked to the likes of hipster bands like Belle and Sebastian. Talk about right out of Indie Moviemaking 101. What IS interesting is that the film takes a pro-life stance. This is a viewpoint you're not going to see much coming out of Hollywood, so once again I can't completely dismiss the film. But the movie also asks you to believe that this kid's gonna have the baby, give it up for adoption, and simply move on with her life without ever even wondering about the little tyke, who resides in the same zip code. You've got to be kidding me. Juno is this year's "Crash" or "Little Miss Sunshine," i.e. the fraudulent indie film. Why do the critics always fall for these films? Expand

I was excited about seeing it based on the reviews, but I did not like Juno at all. In fact, for about the first hour, it looked like it was going to be downright awful. Jason Reitman apes Todd Solondz, Judd Apatow, and Wes Anderson SO hard, without adding a damn thing and subtracting a lot. He seems out to prove that he is truly his father's son. Far worse is Diablo Cody's script. The pop-culture name-checking, the sarcastic heroine a la Thora Birch in Ghost World, the unfunny use of words like "beef swords" (which killed with our audience by the way), the quirky indie constructs (the stepmom obsessed with dogs, the rock-and-roller who now composes commercial jingles)... yuck. It all feels very familiar but nowhere near as good as you've seen it done before. It is a terrible film with one single asset: Michael Cera. Juno's parents must have taken some sedatives before that scene, because they seemed like the most laid-back parents in the world. They didn't even raise their voices once when they heard the news! [just not most critics, somehow...] 2) The plot and lack of real-world pressure and complications are equally ridiculous. It can be forgiven as light comedy, but again, we're having our belief stretched. In the 2 minute version, Juno gets pregnant, says something hipster-flippant, and drinks a soda with her guy. See? Teen pregnancy? No big whup.... Felonies: 1)"Indie Film is a registered trademark of the Fox Corporation". It's 'alternative rock' all over again. If someone makes a horror movie, it is clear that they are not serious, and that's ok. If someone presents something as "ok" and thereby encourages and reinforces destructive behaviour and misinformation of the audience, that's not ok. Would you be similarly lenient about a film that, through the behaviour of the "hero", uncritically pictures other destructive behaviour such as people smoking inside in the presence of their children or heavier forms of child abuse, based on your pseudo-logical statement that that, too, is "common" and therefore ok to be presented as "ok" in a film? That in one case (e.g. child abuse) it is obvious to you that it is encouraging destructive behaviour, and in the other (birth) it is not obvious to you due to lack of knowledge, makes no difference. "Common" and "normal" does not mean "ok"! Is it that so hard to understand? This is highly irresponsible and badly researched filmmaking. If you watch it as uncritically as many seem to do, that is equally irresponsible, by the way. Your choice? Maybe. What would your (future) children say if you could ask them now about your interest in birth or lack thereof? Again, I would appreciate it if people would not be so catastrophically uncritical.
