If you are looking for a movie-documentary of WW2 this will not be your kind of movie, but in the other hand if you are familiar with the independent work of Waititi, you will love it, it reminded me this feeling that “La Vita e Bella” had.

In spite of the content and some language I really believe this is a great movie to watch with your kids to talk about the Holocaust. My 10 year daughter and I watched it and had some great conversations about what had happened. Highly recommend!

There is two moments in the movie that totally bring you back to what humanity needs to be reminded of. To love people. This is shown through despair and pain but also through hope and belief in a better world.

It never once disrespects or makes light of the history it's portraying, while managing to pull off humor that would feel right at home in a Monty Python sketch or Mel Brooks feature. Davis is so cute and charming and the rest of the cast (namely Rockwell) each get a chance to shine. It’s a bit light (you’re either a good guy or an evil Nazi, no in-between) but it’s got plenty of laughs.

It's well shot, mostly very well acted (accents aside), and the writing really impressed me. My first reaction to the film was that nothing was subtle, but nothing was trying to be subtle, and it sorta worked. As the film progressed, though, it was clear that there was a lot more subtle moments of genuine care than expected, and even a lot of the humor was moving to lines that sorta took the audience a few seconds before it clicked and we laughed. Is it the film of the year? No. Does it do what it set out to do? Everything and more, I think. As a Jewish man, I've long held that Life is Beautiful is the only film that has gone for any laughs about the holocaust in any shape or form that worked, but that maybe a movie with enough thought and talent in writing could do the same someday. I just never thought that film needed to exist, and I especially never thought it would come from the Thor 3 guy. This movie is no Life is Beautiful, but it hit the marks it needed to, I think. Jojo Rabbit is one hell of an emotional roller-coaster and tonally a bit all over the place which will leave most of you an emotional wreck by the time the credits roll.

Jojo (Roman Griffin Davis) is dead set on becoming a member of the Hitler Youth during the last years of WWII. When he finds a Jewish girl (Thomasin McKenzie) hiding in his home he becomes caught between his moral conscience and his blind nationalism. You’ll be laughing one minute and nearly in tears the next. Jojo Rabbit has more than a few tear-jerking moments, yet the mood will quickly change any time Taika Waititi appears on screen as Adolf Hitler. Yes you read that right, Waititi portrays Jojo’s imaginary friend Hitler. I don’t believe any other person could have gotten away with that and on paper it sounds very strange but trust me on this, it works. It just about finds the balance between political satire and a moving story. Yes it’s a little outrageous at times but the acting from the entire cast is absolutely exceptional. Scarlett Johansson as Jojo’s mother and Sam Rockwell as Captain Klenzendorf give a standout performance, but it’s Roman Griffin Davis who really shines through. A very impressive debut, I don’t know where they found him but I’m sure he has a very successful career ahead of him. I loved JoJo Rabbit, it’s shocking, funny and well worth the ticket price. A black comedy that will warm your heart and highly recommended.

This is a movie with heart, and we need movies with heart nowThe latest offering from Taika Waititi is thought provoking, hilarious, and heart-breaking. This movie has such a strong, compelling, artistic vision that it never wavers from. This is a movie with heart, and we need movies with heart now more than ever.

Without going into any spoiler territory, the best way I can describe the vision of Jojo Rabbit is this: Imagine if Wes Anderson directed a mashup of Thor Ragnarok and The Boy In the Striped Pajamas. It's sound absolutely crazy, but Waititi manages to pull it off with exceptional grace. The soundtrack, which is loaded with Beatles songs and David Bowie anthems, is a leaf right out of Wes Anderson's book. Also inspired by Wes Anderson is Waititi's shot composition of incredibly symmetrical images, visual metaphors and foreshadowing, and a vibrant pastel color palette. The humor and character development in the film is classic Waititi. Waititi himself plays a well thought out caricature of Hitler who always gives terrible advice, and is struggling to mask the evil that hides beneath the surface. Thomasin MacKenzie is absolutely brilliant, as is our main character, Jojo, played by Roman Griffin Davis. Sam Rockwell is surprisingly touching as a sympathetic Nazi. Scarlett Johansson's performance will not leave a dry eye in the house. Other performances of note are Stephen Merchant's terrifyingly hilarious take on a Gestapo officer, and Archie Yates as Yorki, Jojo's happy go lucky best friend.

While billed as a comedy, this movie is definitely a drama. There is no doubt about that. The film doesn't shy away from the horrors of WWII, and when the emotional punches start coming, they just don't stop. A lot like the real WWII, things get way worse before they get better.

There wasn't a whole lot I didn't like about Jojo Rabbit. Occasionally, some moments drag out a little too long. Also, the very last shot of the movie is a little unnecessary. However, Jojo Rabbit is a beautiful, emotional rollercoaster of a film. It asks daring questions about the human soul, and it does provide some good laughs. Definitely check this one out.

“What did they do?” Jojo asks his mother, inquiring about the townspeople he sees hanging in the village square.

“Plenty of good,” Jojo’s mother responds, reinforcing the noblest of convictions to both herself and her impressionable young son.

The above interaction is just one of many poignant scenes found throughout Taika Waititi’s ‘Jojo Rabbit,’ about a young boy in Hitler's army who discovers that his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their home.

Beyond the many instances of poignancy and incisiveness, ‘Jojo Rabbit’ is equally packed with witty dialogue and humorous interludes, making it among the finest examples of satire to emerge from Hollywood in recent memory.

So color us mystified as to why critics have given this gem such a paltry 78% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 58% on Metacritic. Those who panned the movie are either unable to laugh at absurdity, or they themselves are so absurd that it’s not worth anyone’s time to read their brainsick thoughts.

JojoFirst off, I'd like to address to what seems to be a common criticism in the other reviews. the impression of Hitler is goofy and in a way reminds me of mr. bean, however this is only how Jojo (our young protagonist) perceives him. Jojo idolises Hitler and has him as his imaginary friend so its only logical that a child sees his imaginary friend as child-like thus, the directors/ writers arent in any way saying the real Hitler was anything like how Jojo imagines him to be, they just made the imaginary version of him mirrors the boy which by the way was very comedic and well done as for the rest of my review, Jojo rabbit is supurb, every character is believable and most are actually likeable which is a nice breath of fresh air when it comes to nazi movies. the film does a great job at showing not all nazis were crazy killing machines that believed in the aryan race concept(but its definitely talked about in the movie) and humanizes them greatly. it pulls heart strings effectively and takes on a good deal of themes and doesnt suffer for it 8/10 film, would see again Expand

It is a film about disastrous historical events pulling us to the future, it is not some sci-fi adventure but a prediction of the could-have-been future.

Jojo Rabbit

The co-writer and director Taika Waititi's shock and awe theory is shocking and awe-inducing. Amidst all the controversies and debates that the film has been provoking, you know then and there that the film works. Filmmaking is one slippery sand in your hand. You are told to define the filmmaking in the most textbook format. The definition asks for you to follow certain rules along with elements, proper stages with enough room and objectives that are obligatory. And this is how it is measured. Now, one would always argue then, why doesn't everyone gets it right. Well, one's an idiot. Because there is no textbook out there. So what you are referring to, what your source is, is your instinct.

You must have a sophisticated skillful way of turning the heads of the viewers. Tilting with wonder? Why not. And you can deny and argue as much as you like but Taika in its absurdity and contradictory method, wins your heart with a charming and delightful "small talks". If it makes you cry, it made you feel something. If you're laughing, then you are. The "experience" factor of the film could not be more clear.

Taika's Jojo Rabbit is rabbit-alike. My family has just adopted a rabbit. So all I see is it. But the adorable looks or tone of the film overcomes its undermining and often questioning themes. The film repeatedly skips the "homework" aspect of the narration to zap you with an emotional dose. There are so many things wrong with it. But then, the premise itself asks for it. And no, I am not pointing towards the old Hitler routine, the elephant in the room. But what goes behind those frames. There are some unearthly images enacted in the film to exaggerate the underlined lunacy where all these acts were leading towards.

The film is pretty much 100 minutes of hilarious Nazi mocking satire with some genuinely serious moments. It mostly revolves around a 10 year old kid who has been brainwashed into being a Nazi fanatic but after an unexpected encounter, he slowly starts to see that being a Nazi sucks. That is my summary of this film anyway.

First of all, I have to praise the story/screenplay as despite delving into the topic that has been done to death in film and TV; it still manages to handle it in a rather creative and unique way. It does this by being a dark feel good movie which is just so weird for a movie about Nazi Germany. He portrays the absurdity of war through the perspective of a child lending to some wacky moments. However, Taika manages to balance this goofy comedy with the grim cruelty of the Nazi's which is what makes this movie exceptionally unique and enjoyable. I also have to praise the performance of everyone in this film with special mention to Scarlett Johansson,Sam Rockwell and Taika Waititi as Hitler himself. Scarlett manages to inject some genuine feel good moments in this film and Sam Rockwell giving a hilarious over the top Nazi soldier but still give a contrasting serious performance when he needs to. Taika himself playing Hitler just feels so weird but that is exactly what the story needed and it just works. Likewise, Roman Griffin Davis as the titled character "Jojo" and Archie Yates as his friend "Yorki" have great chemistry reminding me of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Despite being child actors they really managed to give a great performance that doesn't irritate you. I also want to note the score which isn't 1917 amazing but is quite unique and different for a WWII film with its German renditions of western songs which also lends to the uniqueness of this film.

Despite my praise, this movie is not for everyone. There are a lot of stereotypes, historical inaccuracies and lack of realism that might grind people the wrong way. There are certain tonal shifts that can feel really sudden rather than subtle that can be slightly jarring. It can also be argued that the movie doesn't really dive deep into the genuinely horrifying things about Nazi Germany and that it plays a bit too safe. Personally, I do think there were some missing opportunities to explore Jojo's character with the surprising lack of interaction with his friend Yorki and that the Jewish character was only used as a love interest and a writing device to get Jojo out of Nazi mindset.

However, in my opinion those flaws, historical accuracy etc, don't necessarily matter too much to a film. In the end, a film is meant to be enjoyable and I most certainly enjoyed this film. Films can also you leave you with a sense of message gained and this film certainly does that as well. This movie is certainly a great time and it is rather ambitious as well. I highly recommend you give this movie a chance.

Jojo Rabbit doesn’t flinch, it doesn’t pull back from the film it wants to be. It certainly won’t be to everyone’s taste but getting a film to play with this number of laughs and carry the emotional weight that it does can only be pulled together by a director brimming with confidence. The film itself totally belongs to its two young leads; Roman Griffin Davis and Thomasin McKenzie. Sure, they have solid help from a stellar supporting cast which elevates the leads, but without them, it wouldn’t play half as well and certainly would fail to deliver on the more sensitive and serious moments which are the film’s real surprises. Its obviously a very serious subject, the 2nd World War and I wouldn't want to downplay that at all but there is a certain, very dark comedy element to this film I suppose. Of course there's a fair argument to say that this may make some people think that you can have a laugh at what was a mass scale tragedy, genocide of the Jews etc. and I'm also very much aware of the rise in antisemitism in recent months and years.

I think the humour comes from the way it clearly shows just how obsessive the Nazi's were and the clear megalomania that was present. Its very much satirical and features some interesting cast members as supporting characters, like Rebel Wilson and Stephen Merchant. The fact that the film focusses on such a young child (a 10 year old) and how he tries to get his head around what is happening around him and why, that's quite good in that it perhaps could be seen as a bit insightful into how the native children may have processed things. Its very much tongue in cheek and I can understand why it would annoy or upset some but I do feel there's something interesting about it. I'm glad it has the 12 rating in the UK, as I wouldn't be keen for pretty young kids to watch it, with the obvious themes, even though there is relatively little in the way of violence, or graphic violence certainly.

It is somewhat outrageous in tone at times, mainly with the scenes featuring Jojo's imaginary friend, Hitler himself (played by Taika Waititi), who gestures and behaves in a very childish way. Its a bit strange but I quite liked it in a way, though I can understand those who don't feel that way. I couldn't quite understand how it was anti-nationalism until quite late on in the film but it did feel fairly effective by the very end.

Personally, I'd recommend it as long as you know what its about and the type of film it is (a quirky darkly comic/satire drama).

I think it is fair to say that it was NOT what they were expecting. This is likely one of the reasons for some of the negative reviews. This movie is ambitious. It draws you in with what you expect to be fully satirical slap-stickish humor and then rudely wakes you up to the realities of war, prejudice, and fanaticism. The movie triggered the full spectrum of emotions from goofy happiness, to anger, to love of many forms, to shock, sadness, anxiety, and finally uncertain joy. The success of the movie, and its innocent goofiness, comes from the fact that it is ENTIRELY presented from the perspective of a 10 year old boy. A boy forced to deal with the horrors and glamour of war at the same time that he is dealing with the normal hardships of growing up, like any of us. While we can relate to some of his experiences, the backdrop of his reality amplifies the circumstances and consequences of his actions and experiences. The story telling, though at times imperfect, is ultimately successful because of the amazing performances of the cast and the honesty and value of the message being conveyed. The boys did not get the movie they were expecting but instead were treated to a film which challenged their beliefs, expanded their thinking a bit, an triggered great conversations. They loved it. A well-produced and well-acted satire of Naziism that uses humor effectively to entertain and at the same time point out the falsity and absurdity of the premises of the ideology.

As earlier films have demonstrated, it occasionally required some violent shoots with explicit blood as Saving Private Ryan, hostile behaviour towards the Jude population to the point it could affect the audience sensibility as Schindler's List. Nevertheless, for some reason, Jojo Rabbit is an excellent example of how we can change the viewpoint of memorable events in history even in the darkest hours. Indeed, young spectators will understand, have fun and, more important, learn from past errors which affected millions of innocent souls."
...
Jojo Rabbits exceeds the initial expectations you might have before you bought the ticket to the theatre. It serves as a portrayal of children indoctrination through society. The manner they normalise violence, racism towards Judes, blind subordination to the Fuhrer, and so forth. The sense of humour touches these themes, so correctly, it does not impact the audience aggressively. The film introduces rough, gentle and bold characters who are flawlessly performed by a spectacular cast.
...
Honourably, 2019 was the year of Scarlet Johansson owing to her phenomenal roles in Avengers: Endgame, Marriage Story and her sweetest performance I have witnessed so far in Jojo Rabbit. Furthermore, the friendship of Roman Griffin [Jojo Betzler] and Archie Yates [Yorki] without being aware of what was going on during Nazi Germany is an absolute win. In spite of being children, they have demonstrated engaging chemistry and comradeship during the montage. The best part is that aside from the film, for example, at the red carpet of the UK, this twosome interacts as if they were long-time mates which makes their bonds grow even stronger.
...
When it comes to comedy, there is always a compound of experience [actress Rebel Wilson from "Pitch Perfect" and Taika Waititi from "Thor: Ragnarok"] cheering up the atmosphere alongside with refreshed sense of childlike humour provided by German youngsters. Amidst jokes, you can find hidden facts about the Hitlerjugend as it is the case of splitting boys [to military duties and heavy tasks] and girls [to the Bund Deutscher Mädel so that they specialise on how to become exemplary housewives and raise the next generation properly]. Charming Rosie Betzler [Scarlet Johansson] is a verdict representation of the national resistance against Hitler. Despite the danger it represented, the personas fight for what each of them believes, this is another reason why I consider this film a chef-d'oeuvre. Don't miss the opportunity to watch it!

Successful portrait of horror as a comedy

It is always problematic to face a comedy about Nazism and Waititi manages it quite well, with his story (and from the point of view of) about a 10-year-old boy who enters the Hitlerjugend (Hitler Youth) at the end of the war, his mother and a secret that she will soon discover at home.

The child starts from a furious Nazism fueled by his imaginary talks with Hitler himself (perhaps the least successful of the film) in what constitutes a novel of learning and initiation.

Many critics reproach that in certain sections (one of them a devastating scene) the film abandons its acid, satirical and accurate humor (including notable sequences of graphic humor), but I believe that these dark and hard moments are inescapable, necessary.

However, there is more than one scene, especially a very successful one where the director achieves the coexistence of the comic with the sinister.
The period reconstruction is exquisite, very German.

The performance of the child Roman Griffin Davies (character with some echoes of The Tin Drum of Schlöndorf) is huge and Scarlett Johansson is the bright mother of him.

A satirical period dramedy set against the backdrop of WWII/The Holocaust, the film follows a member of the Hitler Youth coming to terms with the fact that his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in the walls of their house. Oh, and the boy's imaginary friend is a version of Adolf Hitler, played by the writer/director himself. Forget "high-wire act." For some filmmakers, this project would be like playing "the floor is lava" in a cornfield. In any event, not only has Waititi delivered the potentially scandalous material in a palatable manner, he even manages to make it feel safe, which I suppose is for the best. Much like the titular protagonist, "Jojo Rabbit" itself is a film with a good heart nestled beneath all the red flags (no pun intended) and sensitive content, featuring an affecting narrative told by a dynamic filmmaker with a unique voice. In that, it's an especially above average watch, and one that I can't say I'll soon forget. Expand

Writer-director Taika Waititi takes quite a chance with this comical coming of age story, walking a fine line between evoking laughs while addressing serious subjects, a mix that hits some notes and misses others. The picture's best assets -- its strong start and finish, an excellent Wes Anderson-esque production design, and excellent performances by Roman Griffin Davis as the befuddled youth and Waititi as an imaginary friend version of the Fuhrer -- unfortunately are undercut by a drawn-out, meandering middle that stymies the picture's momentum and detracts from its strengths. A valiant effort that comes close but doesn't quite nail the bull's-eye. Expand

"Your mother took me in. She's kind. She treats me like a person."

Taika Waititi is on a roll recently and rightfully so, because he's got a great comedic vision.

'Jojo Rabbit' is a World War II satire that's both hilarious and surprisingly tragic. Joy, terror, love, hate all in one movie. Waititi knows how far to take a joke and how humor can put on light on ugly issues. While absurd looking on the surface, but on a deeper look it's something unique.

Newcomers Roman Griffin Davis and Thomasin McKenzie take center stage upon the big cast. Their comedic timing, emotional range and overall performances are nothing short than impressive. Also Archie Yates is like the adorable child version of Nick Frost.

Speaking of big name stars. Scarlett Johansson is having a fantastic year and she once again delivers a wonderful performance. Sam Rockwell is amazing in pretty much anything he's in and here is no different. Rockwell playing a closeted homosexual Nazi is hysterical, and yet meaningful when you look at it more thoughtfully.

The weakest actor upon the cast has to be Rebel Wilson. I really didn't buy her as this character. I thought she's just doing her usual comedic traits like in every other movie, which I'm not a fan of.

Not only is Taika Waititi directing and writing, but also starring as Jojo's imaginary friend of his very own idol... Adolf Hitler. Apparently Waititi didn't have to research playing Hitler, because he thought Adolf was 'a f**ing c***'. Anywhere, the concept itself is really bizarre and really fascinating. While silly and entertaining, but could've been left out, in my opinion. There was a point where he completely disappears from the movie to later reappear during the finale.

At times I feel like it tries hard to be like a Wes Anderson movie, in terms of staging, quirky humor, and overall setting. Influence is one thing, but it came a point when it wasn't being it's own thing.

Overall rating: Criticisms aside, I had an absolute blast. Endearing and highly vocal. I'm glad a movie like this exist.

Making fun of Nazi Germany is a double-edged sword, after all it serves as a satire but you also can't forget the horrors that happened back then.
Jojo Rabbit swings between satire and a feel-good story. It manages to work and I don't think it was insulting. Written and directed by Taika Waititi, Jojo Rabbit is a movie that certainly borrows a lot from Wes Anderson. The opening sequence is more than evident and although that may be considered problematic for some, Waititi manages to emerge gracefully from the evident comparisons, though with its obvious ups and downs.

Another point to emphasize is that you will enter the world of the movie or you will not and personally I think that depends a lot on whether you'll enjoy the movie or not.
There's moments where I couldn't help feeling the film stretches a lot the absurdity, but once again Waititi manages to recover enough the pace so that things don't get out of hand.

While not all jokes land and honestly the movie is never as funny as it thinks it is, passing the bumps, Jojo Rabbit shows the heart of its narrative that is the friendship between Jojo (Roman Griffin Davis) and Elsa (Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie), the young Jew girl that her mother (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding in their home.
This is essential because Jojo being the main character and obviously the narrative driver only knows what he has learned so far, what they instructed him and is that the Jews are vermin therefore his growth as a character and evidently as a person lies in that plot point although obviously that's where the failure of the story lies because at this point that's not something that is no longer known or needs to be learned, perhaps it should be emphasized but not only towards the Jews but towards the whole world in general considering that kids today continue to be feed with that kind of hate.

Jojo Rabbit is a conventional film but it stands out for its style and it's an honest story, as honest as its plot can provide. It's nothing special but personally I had a good time watching it and that is also what cinema is about.

Some critics giving this movieFirst, let's get the whole "it's somehting not to joke about" out of the way. This movie is'nt just trying to get some laughs out of tragic events, but as well make fun of how stupid humanity can be sometimes. Some critics giving this movie implications like "What is the point?" Reminding even the same kind of critics Roberto Benigni's La vita è bella got for getting some humor out of this dark period of human history, hence completely missing the core of that movie which was positivity of hope for the future. And talking about Jojo Rabbit, though it really doesn't have anything too philosophical to say, it delivers what you sign up for: Having a good time and hope for the future!
But of course it's not flawless by any means, there are some insinuations for romances here and there that do not get really to some point in the end. Some character motivationes, that may seem merely plain or somehow unexplained, can get the overall perception that secondary characters have in fact little care, with one very specific exception in the very end of the movie. Sometimes the plot can feel a tiny bit dragged or feeling like you have to wait a little bit for that important thing to happen.
Now let's get the great parts on the table. The performances from the younger actors are really on point, and across the board the perfomances of the main characters are great, highlighting Waititis funny performance as Hitler and the realtion between each character with Jojo in a natural and realistic way. Scarlet Johansson can get from really funny to really compelling quite smoothelly, but on one very specific moment that was meant to be really sad and shocking, can actually get a little off putting or with misunderstood feelings that you may forget after 5 minutes; and that can be a problem, ther are very emotional events here and there that can get you on the edge of heartbreaking so to get back to the general feeling of comedy they appeal to use, although very comical, out of nowhere jokes which can be annoying for some people.
And the best part of this movie, the feeling of hope and opportunity for the future that it reamins on one's mind for very long. It really pays off in the end as a movie which has something to say in a very heart warming way, something that can go around the sentiment of keep going 'cause it gets better.

The Stream: The whipsaw changes in tone can be disorienting and highlight lulls in the forward momentum of the story.

The Big Screen: Compelling performances from a good cast bring offbeat humor and depth of emotion.

The Final Bill: It is humorous with a distinct point of view and a heartfelt message, but if you’re not on the wavelength with that point of view, you won’t get it.

How do you solve a problem like Jojo? He’s a 10 year-old, Hitler Youth with Adolf as an imaginary friend. Does he understand what it all means? Or, does he really just want to play dress up and be a part of a club, as is suggested by one of the other characters. How does a 10 year old navigate this complicated and dangerous world? Jojo Rabbit explores these themes and more through a delicate balance of satire and drama. Taika Waititi wrote and directed Jojo Rabbit, which is based on a novel by Christine Leunens called Caging Skies; and he brings his special brand of boffo comedy – even portraying Jojo’s imaginary confidante, Adolf. It’s both wacky and serious. Sometimes it is both within the span of minutes.

I have had a difficult time digesting Jojo Rabbit because I wanted it to be more impactful to me than I felt it was. It’s a coming of age story with many of the tropes that a coming of age story has. Jojo is destined to learn a lesson. On the other hand, Waititi, as writer, director and cast member, has a strong point of view about lampooning the ridiculousness of Nazism and through his brand of humor dismantles other hate-filled ideologies. In that way, the film is novel and a worthy viewing. The whole thing can be disorienting, which may take some audience members out of the overall experience of the film.

Roman Griffin Davis plays Jojo. This kid is great. He has the weight of this sometimes silly and sometimes very serious movie on his shoulders. Through the eyes of this child, we see and question war, ideology, love and loss. Davis always seems appropriately in tune with his character. There are other great performances by Scarlett Johansson as Jojo’s mother and Thomasin McKenzie as the mysterious stranger Jojo develops a relationship with. I’ll say that Waititi’s Adolf is very impactful in his brief scenes; and there’s a hilarious and threatening cameo by Stephen Merchant. The only out of place and unnecessary cast member is Rebel Wilson, which is true of most of the roles she’s portrayed. No offense to you, Ms. Wilson.

Overall, Jojo Rabbit is a good movie that should be seen. It will not be what you expect. The balance of comedy and drama achieved by Waititi didn’t always work to me. If you are not calibrated to this satirical tone, then you may not enjoy Jojo’s ride. I say proceed to the theater with caution.

It follows a young Nazi-raised boy by the name of Jojo and his upbringing and various misadventures in war-torn Germany, all alongside his mother (Scarlett Johansson), a young Jewish girl he discovers in hiding (Thomasin McKenzie), and his imaginary friend who happens to be a much sillier version of Adolf Hitler (Taika Waititi, who also directs the film.) Throughout much of the film's runtime, it gave me some serious Wes Anderson vibes, what with it's quirky and bizarre nature, eccentric characters, and offbeat dialogue and jokes. Unfortunately, it's these jokes that hindered the film's potential for me. Just about all of them fell rather flat to me personally, and a surprising amount of them felt really dragged out and in slightly bad taste too. All of the actors, which also included the likes of Sam Rockwell and Rebel Wilson, are given great opportunities to shine and a fair amount of screentime, but I simply felt as though their talents were undermined by the film's flimsy premise and story. Overall, it made a decent effort, but not only did it feel like a Wes Anderson wannabe, I simply found it rather forgettable and subpar in terms of its attempts at dark humor, especially when looking at something as risque as jokes about Nazis and anti-Semitism during WWII. Maybe if I were an American, I would put the movie 8 or even 9. Of course, when in the film the Nazis say that Russians eat children and rape dogs, it's okay, because it is Nazi propaganda. But when in the end of the film you see, that they was wrong only with dogs, it's make me sad. No, of course, they did not eat the jojo, I said it to sound better, but they tried to execute him, which is also not good. And the jojo survived, only thanks to a good Nazi. Do you know what else is insulting? The turning point in the war was after the landing in Italy by the Americans and the British. The city in which the jojo lives was taken by the Americans (it is their flag that appears in the film every time around is fun and good). And only when need to do some dirty work Soviet soldiers appear in the film.
A great work has been done by the propaganda of all countries to dispel myths about the Jews. And that's fine, they now even have their own state. But the state of Soviet people is destroyed, and the myths of the Goebbels time are gaining strength.
Short afterword:
Sorry, if you see somewhere grammatical or punctuation or lexical or any other mistake, I’m not a native speaker of English, I’m only learning. I would probably give the film 8 points, even if it just did not have the Soviet army, well, the Americans won and okay, it's somehow more familiar.

This was my opinion of after an hour of watching Jojo Rabbit. The only merits I found in the first hour of the film are the undeniably decent performances, the stunning cinematography and the impressively colourful production design that bleeds into the costumes as well. Even the "sweet' and "charming" moments were hit-or-miss for me. After the first hour, I can say that I found myself touched and moved out of the blue. I figured out that the film dramatically is quite effective. And if that says anything, it's that the dramatic set-up is actually great but Waititi's insistence to convince us, in a most factitious and pretentious way, that his film possess the punch, which it claims to be having, utterly blinded me of its emotional heft, which it definitely there, and it did take me off guard.

What's more off-putting than the cringe-worthy, infantile humour and the lame attempts at satire is that it tries to conceal its toothless satire behind the fact it's told from the perspective of a 10-year-old boy, which is true but inadequate and even kinda irrelevant, and the fact Waititi tried so hard to make it work satirically is the ultimate proof.

The film also suffers from jarring tonal shifts, but I think this is a relatively minor issue. Maybe it's too generous of me to give this film such rating, but I can't deny how emotionally impactful it ended up being. Also, Thomasin McKenzie. WOW!

But a comedy? Really? Of WWII? In theory I think everything is possible but it would require tremendous talent. I haven't seen it in this movie. The director is definitely not without talent but it's not nearly enough to turn a farce into a drama.

Or may be I am too old.
There were a few amusing episodes and a few funny jokes. Overall the movie felt flat and somewhat ridiculous, as if you come to an amusement park. I guess horrors of World Wars are being erased from our minds as a society.

Amusement parks are immensely popular. I am sure many people will find this movie great.

I love the concept, and I love Taika, and indeed all his parts as Adolf were hilarious. The problem is they only comprise of a very small part of the movie, and at the end amount to little more than a SNL sketch. The rest about the boy and the girl is at most mildly interesting...there are a couple of dramatic notes that have a strong effect, but other than that it just mostly fell flat. Creating a blend between comedy and drama is tricky and this film unfortunately fell into the neither here nor there category, where instead of complementing each other both elements mostly cancelled each other out. Again, there are some genuinely funny and moving scenes here, but overall I don't think it worked to the extent that it could have. Expand

There is no doubt that it is a good film about how it deals with the issue of Nazism from the point of view of a child's innocent gaze. With the appearance of comedy introduces plots of a drama for reflection. Anyway I expected a little more.

It starts off as a complete farce of Nazi Germany, then switches tone to something more akin to Wes Anderson, then becomes a tale about how Nazism is wrong (yes, we knew), then becomes a bleak anti-war tale, and vacillates back and forth between all the above. Meanwhile, the central premise that this boy imagines that he is close friends with Adolf Hitler gets thrown aside after the first fifteen minutes and revisited only sporadically.

A few of the jokes land, but probably less than half of them. Enjoyable, but bit of a mess that really doesn't give us anything new.

The Atlantic said if perfectly: ""Jojo Rabbit’s script isn’t emotionally complex enough to address the cruel realism of its world, and as the bleakness continues, the jokes fall flatter and flatter."

The movie is a well made terribly told story with no direction. The movie either doesn't know what it's trying to say or doesn't know how to say it effectively. From Rozy sudden and frankly lackluster death to jojo's characterization (which I can't blame the actor for,he was great). Taika unfortunately got lost in his strengths, tge slapstick comedy that usually works so well for him feels immature here. This should've been better.

This movie was just plain weird. It was billed as a satire on Nazism, and it tried to make the training of Hitler Youth funny; but it failed spectacularly.

It did not even work as an illustration of the senselessness of war, the despicableness of anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry, or the horror of socialist totalitarianism.

I drove 40 minutes to see it because some critics seemed to believe it was Oscar-worthy. I could not disagree more.

Instead, the result is jarring. It took me 15 minutes to realise that this was actually set in (an absurdist version of) Nazi Germany, rather than in a modern-day English speaking country. I first thought that we were seeing a small community of neo-nazis, portrayed as pathetic by showing how they put on fake German accents (that seem to switch on and off during the movie) and go to a Nazi-themed summer camp. I struggled the whole movie with that frame, not helped by the fact that while I love absurd humor I could find nothing to appreciate beyond 'haha Nazi's but ridiculous'. Just being irreverent towards Hitler and the Nazi's is not shocking or original enough anymore to carry a joke on its own. The components of the movie itself are decent in principle and when I read about the movie beforehand it felt promising (absurd setting centered on Nazis; irreverent coming of age story of fanatical boy realising that those he has learned to hate are also human; the idiotic behaviour extremism can lead people to do), but do not work together, at least not in this movie. The movie seems to pretend it is edgy or breaks new ground with all these elements, but it is not: all of it has been done, and much better. Meanwhile, genocide is reduced to how some movies treat the misogynist uncle: we know it's kindoff bad, but isn't he just a loveable package? Most Nazis don't really mean it anyway. And while this can be the case for many characters in a Nazi movie, the movie makes no attempt to reflect on why they do such terrible things then or how the system still produces such results (or what these results are anyway - it shows and tells about some attrocities that we as an audience are supposed to take as an indication that bad things do happen, but they are so out of proportion with reality that it seems to trivialise that reality).

For all the pretense in what is written about this movie elsewhere, don't waste your time watching it. The humour fails and there is only a veneer of a message or critical take that falls apart at first scrutiny.
