A funny and entertaining movie, with a different kind of humour. The movie really keeps you invested as all the main characters are played very well. A movie with a very serious topic played very well into a comedy. One of Taikas bet so far.

The film is pretty much 100 minutes of hilarious Nazi mocking satire with some genuinely serious moments. It mostly revolves around a 10 year old kid who has been brainwashed into being a Nazi fanatic but after an unexpected encounter, he slowly starts to see that being a Nazi sucks. That is my summary of this film anyway.

First of all, I have to praise the story/screenplay as despite delving into the topic that has been done to death in film and TV; it still manages to handle it in a rather creative and unique way. It does this by being a dark feel good movie which is just so weird for a movie about Nazi Germany. He portrays the absurdity of war through the perspective of a child lending to some wacky moments. However, Taika manages to balance this goofy comedy with the grim cruelty of the Nazi's which is what makes this movie exceptionally unique and enjoyable. I also have to praise the performance of everyone in this film with special mention to Scarlett Johansson,Sam Rockwell and Taika Waititi as Hitler himself. Scarlett manages to inject some genuine feel good moments in this film and Sam Rockwell giving a hilarious over the top Nazi soldier but still give a contrasting serious performance when he needs to. Taika himself playing Hitler just feels so weird but that is exactly what the story needed and it just works. Likewise, Roman Griffin Davis as the titled character "Jojo" and Archie Yates as his friend "Yorki" have great chemistry reminding me of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Despite being child actors they really managed to give a great performance that doesn't irritate you. I also want to note the score which isn't 1917 amazing but is quite unique and different for a WWII film with its German renditions of western songs which also lends to the uniqueness of this film.

Despite my praise, this movie is not for everyone. There are a lot of stereotypes, historical inaccuracies and lack of realism that might grind people the wrong way. There are certain tonal shifts that can feel really sudden rather than subtle that can be slightly jarring. It can also be argued that the movie doesn't really dive deep into the genuinely horrifying things about Nazi Germany and that it plays a bit too safe. Personally, I do think there were some missing opportunities to explore Jojo's character with the surprising lack of interaction with his friend Yorki and that the Jewish character was only used as a love interest and a writing device to get Jojo out of Nazi mindset.

However, in my opinion those flaws, historical accuracy etc, don't necessarily matter too much to a film. In the end, a film is meant to be enjoyable and I most certainly enjoyed this film. Films can also you leave you with a sense of message gained and this film certainly does that as well. This movie is certainly a great time and it is rather ambitious as well. I highly recommend you give this movie a chance.

Jojo Rabbit manages to balance surreal comedy with serious drama to tell a story during WW2 through the eyes of a child. It's not a purposefully sad and depressing movie, like many movies depicting the time period. It depicts life is it was. There was joy, there was sadness, there was anger and there was compassion. Visually the movie is colourful and vibrant, as opposed to dark and dull. The characters are well-written and unique, and will often break the pre-determined notions of fictional characters from that era. The movie has received criticism for not taking the subject matter seriously enough. This type of criticism might be some of the most stupid and down-right dangerous criticism which can be given. This movie tells a story from a well-known time period in a very different way, which is just what is needed. The movie doesn't aim to tell you how bad the nazis were, it assumes you already know this. The movie portrays them in a different way with one purpose in mind: to laugh at them. It helps people understand that authoritarian regimes aren't stopped by anger. They are stopped when everyone stops taking them seriously. The nazis don't deserve the respect to be feared. They deserve to be ridiculed and made to look like the stupid donkeys that they are.

However, even ignoring the purpose and message of the movie, and its social commentary. The movie tells a heartwarming, hilarious and sometimes gut-wrenching story which will take you on a roller coaster of emotions like no other. I'm not going to pretend like everyone will love this movie, but it is a movie everyone should watch and form their own opinion about.

Give it a try.

It opens with real footage of crowds roaringA good movie lets you know what you’re in for right away. A great movie surpasses those expectations. You’ll know within the first ten minutes of Jojo Rabbit whether this film is for you or not. It opens with real footage of crowds roaring ecstatically for Adolf Hitler while a German version of “I Want to Hold Your Hand” plays over the titles. This is how 10-year-old Johannes sees Hitler. In fact, his goofy, encouraging imaginary best friend is none other than Adolf. Any comedy set in Nazi Germany is going to be tricky to say the least, even for a talented filmmaker like writer-director Taika Waititi. In previous films, Waititi has tackled broad, dark comedy (the vampire comedy What We Do In The Shadows) and mixed comedy and sentimental drama (the wonderful Huntfor the Wilderpeople). In Jojo Rabbit, Waititi combines sharp satire, broad comedy, devastating drama, and sincere sentiment with incredible results. Movies like Jojo Rabbit don’t come along too often. This is without a doubt one of the best movies of 2019.

Roman Griffin Davis plays Johannes who is young enough that he believes all of the most awful and absurd antisemitic Nazi propaganda. He wants to be the best Nazi he can be, but doesn’t measure up. Older members of the Hitler Youth nickname him Jojo Rabbit after he can’t bring himself to kill a rabbit. His mother, Rosie (Scarlett Johansson) is raising is him alone—his soldier father is presumed dead, or possibly a deserter—and trying to counteract the hateful propaganda Jojo has been absorbing. She is also secretly sheltering a Jewish girl, Elsa (Thomasin McKenzie), in an upstairs crawlspace. When Jojo discovers Elsa, he knows he can’t turn her in without getting his mother in trouble, so he decides question her about being Jewish to write a book. His initial shock and fright turn to confusion: she has no horns and doesn’t sleep upside down. In fact, she appears to be a normal girl and he develops a crush on her.

Waititi walks a fine line both as a filmmaker, maintaining the film’s dark comic tone, and as an actor, playing the imaginary Adolf. His performance is broad and over the top but it matches what 10-year-old Jojo would conjure up. Scarlett Johansson has earned a Supporting Actress nomination for her role as Jojo’s mother and I think it’s well deserved. Her portrayal of a someone doing all she can to be a good parent and a good person is compelling. Sam Rockwell turns in another good performance as a washed-up Nazi officer that may actually be hiding a sense of decency. In a small but chilling role Stephen Merchant plays a Gestapo officer that comes to investigate Jojo’s house; his thin but imposing 6’7” figure is used for unease and intimidation. Archie Yates as Yorki, Jojo’s only friend in real life, is a natural born scene stealer. This film is not meant to be an actual representation of life under Hitler’s Third Reich. This is a fable about a how a young boy experiences the horrors of the Nazi regime and is able to survive not just with his life but with his heart and soul. The screenplay, adapted by Waititi from the novel Caging Skies by Christine Leunen, believes that fanatism is absurd, so everything presented on screen follows that principal. Nazis are presented as ridiculous because their whole belief system is based on the hateful absurdity that a certain group of people are superior to others. The comedy in this movie is audacious and even uncomfortable but it never mocks or minimizes the horrific actions of the Nazis. When one Nazi gives a Hitler Youth child a live grenade and tells him to run and hug an American soldier, it’s not remotely funny.

Jojo Rabbit shouldn’t work but it does. A large reason for that is the sweet nature of Roman Griffin Davis and his scenes with Thomasin McKenzie, also giving a great performance. Another reason is Taika Waititi’s sensibilities as a filmmaker. He knows just how far to push the comedy and how to play the drama scenes for incredible effect. Advertisements have marketed Jojo Rabbit as an “anti-hate satire” which it certainly is. It is also a story about how hope can survive even in the darkest of places and times, until one day it can step outside again and dance.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

Taika Waititi, while playing (an imaginary and flamboyant) Adolf Hitler, uses Jojo Rabbit to look at the indoctrination of the emotionally vulnerable and what can be done to save them. Encapsulating this message are legitimately hilarious moments, deconstructions, and political satire. With such a sensitive subject matter, any attempt at comedy needs to have a point and needs to actually be funny; Jojo Rabbit sticks the landing. Expand

Its obviously a very serious subject, the 2nd World War and I wouldn't want to downplay that at all but there is a certain, very dark comedy element to this film I suppose. Of course there's a fair argument to say that this may make some people think that you can have a laugh at what was a mass scale tragedy, genocide of the Jews etc. and I'm also very much aware of the rise in antisemitism in recent months and years.

I think the humour comes from the way it clearly shows just how obsessive the Nazi's were and the clear megalomania that was present. Its very much satirical and features some interesting cast members as supporting characters, like Rebel Wilson and Stephen Merchant. The fact that the film focusses on such a young child (a 10 year old) and how he tries to get his head around what is happening around him and why, that's quite good in that it perhaps could be seen as a bit insightful into how the native children may have processed things. Its very much tongue in cheek and I can understand why it would annoy or upset some but I do feel there's something interesting about it. I'm glad it has the 12 rating in the UK, as I wouldn't be keen for pretty young kids to watch it, with the obvious themes, even though there is relatively little in the way of violence, or graphic violence certainly.

It is somewhat outrageous in tone at times, mainly with the scenes featuring Jojo's imaginary friend, Hitler himself (played by Taika Waititi), who gestures and behaves in a very childish way. Its a bit strange but I quite liked it in a way, though I can understand those who don't feel that way. I couldn't quite understand how it was anti-nationalism until quite late on in the film but it did feel fairly effective by the very end.

Personally, I'd recommend it as long as you know what its about and the type of film it is (a quirky darkly comic/satire drama).

This movie has everything!

I randomly watched the movie during a flight, which means that I neither expected much, nor have I watched the trailer, but as soon as I landed Jojo Rabbit managed to become (probably) my favourite film of the past decade.
I laughed, I cried, I was delighted, and touched.
Brilliant performance by the actors, which had great chemistry amongst each other and pulled off a decent way to sound German in the English language without cheaply mocking it. (I am a native German speaker)
Great soundtrack and use of actual music and songs.
The movie has quite a layered point to make, which easily eludes you if only watching once (or on a plane for that matter). Regarding the criticism I've read online:
This is not supposed to be a lighthearted Schindlers Liste, nor a mocking comedy about Hitler.
It is something special on its very own with a unique take on WWII through the eyes of a little boy that wants to fit in with all the other Nazis. By taking that lens it manages to display the horrors (that were visible to a child back then) in a funny way, simply by taking them naively serious. Everyone I've showed this movie so far liked it a lot, Jewish and German alike.

The appearance of Hitler as imaginary friend makes this movie more fun and more lively to be watched with everybody in your living room during Lockdown. The story line is simple, but the plots, scenes, character developments, and surprises are still coming to our way to realize about what is missing during moment of war and who is our true friend during difficult time. I love the way Director can give strong commitment to create focus on main character by giving the title Jojo Rabbit, that makes him more curiosity about himself and questioning many things, including where is his soldier father, what is Jewish, who is Hitler, and many more. I can not find any lackness of this masterpiece. So modern, dramatic, fun, and critical at some points. This is not one-time-watching movie. This is legend. Expand

As earlier films have demonstrated, it occasionally required some violent shoots with explicit blood as Saving Private Ryan, hostile behaviour towards the Jude population to the point it could affect the audience sensibility as Schindler's List. Nevertheless, for some reason, Jojo Rabbit is an excellent example of how we can change the viewpoint of memorable events in history even in the darkest hours. Indeed, young spectators will understand, have fun and, more important, learn from past errors which affected millions of innocent souls."
...
Jojo Rabbits exceeds the initial expectations you might have before you bought the ticket to the theatre. It serves as a portrayal of children indoctrination through society. The manner they normalise violence, racism towards Judes, blind subordination to the Fuhrer, and so forth. The sense of humour touches these themes, so correctly, it does not impact the audience aggressively. The film introduces rough, gentle and bold characters who are flawlessly performed by a spectacular cast.
...
Honourably, 2019 was the year of Scarlet Johansson owing to her phenomenal roles in Avengers: Endgame, Marriage Story and her sweetest performance I have witnessed so far in Jojo Rabbit. Furthermore, the friendship of Roman Griffin [Jojo Betzler] and Archie Yates [Yorki] without being aware of what was going on during Nazi Germany is an absolute win. In spite of being children, they have demonstrated engaging chemistry and comradeship during the montage. The best part is that aside from the film, for example, at the red carpet of the UK, this twosome interacts as if they were long-time mates which makes their bonds grow even stronger.
...
When it comes to comedy, there is always a compound of experience [actress Rebel Wilson from "Pitch Perfect" and Taika Waititi from "Thor: Ragnarok"] cheering up the atmosphere alongside with refreshed sense of childlike humour provided by German youngsters. Amidst jokes, you can find hidden facts about the Hitlerjugend as it is the case of splitting boys [to military duties and heavy tasks] and girls [to the Bund Deutscher Mädel so that they specialise on how to become exemplary housewives and raise the next generation properly]. Charming Rosie Betzler [Scarlet Johansson] is a verdict representation of the national resistance against Hitler. Despite the danger it represented, the personas fight for what each of them believes, this is another reason why I consider this film a chef-d'oeuvre. Don't miss the opportunity to watch it!

This is a story about how hate can soak into young people due to an inherent need to belong. If you are looking for a movie-documentary of WW2 this will not be your kind of movie, but in the other hand if you are familiar with the independent work of Waititi, you will love it, it reminded me this feeling that “La Vita e Bella” had.

Beautiful direction and balance, sans self-indulgence. Waititi does not make light of the grim subject matter; he purposely avoids tired storytelling mechanisms about relatively recent atrocities that we still have much to learn from. While examining his own nationalism, biases, and capacity for empathy, Jojo also shares with us his universally accessible feelings such as palpable loneliness, profound grief and budding devotion. Sit down, have some unicorn for dinner and walk through the rubble with him. Expand

In spite of the content and some language I really believe this is a great movie to watch with your kids to talk about the Holocaust. My 10 year daughter and I watched it and had some great conversations about what had happened. Highly recommend!

An incredible movie! Probably not to everyone's taste but for me the humour is on point, the characters are rememberable and hilarious (Hitler was my favourite). But despite this the drama hits home and some parts left me sobbing. A must watch!

Successful portrait of horror as a comedy

It is always problematic to face a comedy about Nazism and Waititi manages it quite well, with his story (and from the point of view of) about a 10-year-old boy who enters the Hitlerjugend (Hitler Youth) at the end of the war, his mother and a secret that she will soon discover at home.

The child starts from a furious Nazism fueled by his imaginary talks with Hitler himself (perhaps the least successful of the film) in what constitutes a novel of learning and initiation.

Many critics reproach that in certain sections (one of them a devastating scene) the film abandons its acid, satirical and accurate humor (including notable sequences of graphic humor), but I believe that these dark and hard moments are inescapable, necessary.

However, there is more than one scene, especially a very successful one where the director achieves the coexistence of the comic with the sinister.
The period reconstruction is exquisite, very German.

The performance of the child Roman Griffin Davies (character with some echoes of The Tin Drum of Schlöndorf) is huge and Scarlett Johansson is the bright mother of him.

It never once disrespects or makes light of the history it's portraying, while managing to pull off humor that would feel right at home in a Monty Python sketch or Mel Brooks feature. The cast is superb all around, held together mostly by terrific child actors; however, Thomasin McKenzie may be the film's number one breakout star. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is honestly my all time favorite so far, It puts you into perspective of "What if you were living in that time". The character development is superb, JoJo goes from a brainwashed kid to a anti-Nazi. Another character stood out me, Captain Klenzindorf. He was forced to train kids to fight because of his injury, and in the end when he saves JoJo from being taken into custody. In the beginning of the movie, Hitler is very kind to JoJo because he sees JoJo as a person, but when JoJo starts to help Elsa, he starts treating him horribly. That just proves how awful Nazi Germany was. To people who say the movie is promoting Nazism with it's humor, it really isn't. JoJo Rabbit's jokes are against Nazi and you are supposed to laugh at how stupid the Nazi's beliefs were. Expand
