I did appreciate how its story isn't just simple action movie formula, but the clichés are there: "torture-in-a-chair" scenes where the villain leaves and gets confronted by the protagonist later; conflicting moral struggles for the "hero"; and even a deceased wife is thrown in to the mix. All I can say is it is a solid, action movie. Has a comic feel to it, and it is worth admission.

It is a action movie..

Keanu, did pretty good. If I have any gripe it was the heavy in this movie Nothing close to a darth vader etc.

Glad to see Keanu Reeves back in the game. This is a truly great movie if you look at it the way it is supposed to be. Great and fast revenge action. This movie knows what it is doing and so does Keanu.

It was only a **** dog !
This is an animal protection movie.
A warning for people not to shoot their neighbour's dog.
Actually I preferred the first dog.
For the rest there is little to say.

Keanu Reeves is a solid actor, and it was therefore disheartening to watch his career slip away into flop after flop following his starring turn as Neo in the Matrix movies (the latter two of which weren’t so good, by the way). That’s why itKeanu Reeves is a solid actor, and it was therefore disheartening to watch his career slip away into flop after flop following his starring turn as Neo in the Matrix movies (the latter two of which weren’t so good, by the way). That’s why it was such a delightful surprise to me that "John Wick" returned him to bold, stylistically bloody form in the title role.

As Wick, Reeves plays a hitman struggling to overcome the recent, unexpected death of his wife (Bridget Moynahan) when he receives a puppy as a last gift from her to give him something to love and someone to grieve with. Unfortunately, while out with the dog he runs afoul of a Russian gangster, Iosef (Alfie Allen), to whom he refuses to sell his vintage Mustang, and that night the criminal and a few of his cronies break into his house, beat Wick savagely, steal his car, and kill the dog. This was a bad move, as we later learn from Viggo, the head of the New York branch of the Russian mafia (Michael Nyqvist) who is also John’s former employer and Iosef’s father: years ago Wick was a hitman of legendary status in the criminal underworld who, in an attempt to get out of the life and be able to marry his wife, eliminated all of Viggo’s “business” rivals in a single night. The rest of the movie plays out in relatively straightforward fashion, as a cat-and-mouse neo-noir action thriller with Wick trying to get revenge on Iosef while Viggo tries to protect his son and eliminate his former friend at the same time, but it’s the style with which the proceedings are conducted that set it apart from other movies of its kind.

John Wick was directed by Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, former stuntmen (Stahelski was a stand-in for Brandon Lee in "The Crow" following his accidental death, as well as Reeves in "The Matrix", and Leitch has doubled for both Brad Pitt and Matt Damon) who have an eye for action sequences. Whereas in many action films these days shaky and choppy camera work is relied on to give a frenetic feeling to the battle (and unintentionally giving people vertigo in the process), the exact same effect is achieved here with clean cinematography that tracks Wick in continuous shots (or they at least feel continuous) as he guns down enemy after enemy with effortless grace. There is a clear sense of who everyone is, where they are and why they are there in each shot, which is a big help to the audience by way of not inducing a headache in forcing them to figure it out for themselves. In addition to this, cameraman Jonathan Sela does interesting things with lighting, weather, and mood: in typical noir fashion many of the scenes are drab and gloomy, almost black-and-white from their dull color palettes, but it is interesting in which scenes this is prominently feature. Wick’s life outside of his criminal past is where things are more cut-and-dry in terms of color, but when he returns to the life of an assassin suddenly there are bright neon lights, blood-red dress shirts, and intricate tattoos aplenty (there’s also the unforgettable thump and whine of Marilyn Manson’s zombified blues-rocker “Killing Strangers” hanging over a number of scenes). This could be interpreted in any number of ways—it could be that John is more alive when he is embroiled in the criminal world and that he was denying who he was, or it could have been just to create a contrast between the two. I will say this, however: the life of a hitman seems far more lively than the life of a civilian in the film.

I keep referring to Keanu Reeves as John Wick because, in a sense, he is John Wick. The role is an amalgamation of many of his past roles: the one-liners of Ted Logan ("Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure"), the determination of Johnny Utah ("Point Break"), and the reluctance of Neo to be a part of a world he was unsure about ("The Matrix") stand out as the most obvious influences. Wick, like Reeves and his other characters, rarely grows visibly angry, frustrated or upset, and his supreme calm at all times makes him even more threatening when he’s wiping out half of New York single-handedly, as well as even funnier during the deadpan delivery of lines maybe not even intended to be humorous.

Lots in this movie is left unexplained when first introduced, including the supporting characters (which include Willem Dafoe as John’s mentor, Ian McShane as the mysterious operator of a downtown hotel catering exclusively to assassins, Adrienne Palicki as a fellow assassin who could’ve been a Xenia Onatopp-style Bond girl in another life, John Leguizamo as a chop shop owner and Lance Reddick as the concierge of the aforementioned hotel who seems to possess an uncanny sense of what the customer wants/needs), and what isn’t elucidated by the end is deliberately left open to interpretation or further elaboration in the next film. I’m looking forward to seeing the explanation behind the gold coins they use to pay for favors and services. 9/10

Blown away by Keanu Reeves incredible acting in this dumbest movie I have seen in YEARS. So Keanu Reeves stunt double got to direct a movie and it turned out to be a steaming pile of garbage with 0 story and some "cool" looking action scenes. This is style over substance 100% and with literally 0 character development and story I could not even enjoy the "style" part much. Cliche, predictable, and boring, I could not wait for it to be over and laughed at how stupid it was the entire time. This a movie for people who like stupid movies, but even stupider. Imagine the most predictably bland action movie, written by a guy who has written crappy C level movies and directed by a stunt double, and you get "John Wick". Expand

Supremely cheesy compared to "The Equalizer"... Yup, you cannot speak of this movie without comparing it to that other movie that's very similar with exceptions:

This guy everyone knows. He's a hitman working for some cartoony "hitman club" right in the middle of a metropolis where everyone dresses up like they're in a 1920's speakeasy. Gun fights are pretty much like OTT, might as well be from the movie "Wanted".

The other guy, no-one knows (who he really is), he's a former CIA (presumed) assassin who plays vigilante and doesn't do cheesy Hollywood backflips with two guns drawn out. The way he kills sometimes some of his foe is truly brutal.

No movie is completely believable but this movie, although still enjoyable enough to watch is pale in comparison to The Equalizer. I highly recommend watching that one.

It's a crucial requirement for hitmen to have a mediocre first name and quirky last name, as seen with Bond or Bourne, by this standard, John Wick has secured himself in pantheon of action heroes. His tale follows the known formula of one assassin returning to his old life, but what makes John Wick stands out is how vibrant and exciting the movie portrays him. From the nuance, visual and audio, everything looks like enhanced virtual reality or a very polished video game. Keanu Reeves struts with every bone breaking moves he makes, and without a doubt delivering his best performance in years.

Keanu Reeves, despite having impressive resume, might not be the most dynamic actor. He doesn't transform himself in every role, like say, Tom Cruise. However, with good direction and material, both are present in this movie, he will perform amazingly. This is one of Reeves' best roles aside from his in Matrix and Speed, he brings the air of confidence along with hidden yet excessive violence. Reeves display a good emotion as the character, and he also moves with certainty like a hitman would. There is expert use of close quarter combat technique with multitude of fire arms and knowledge of martial arts for the foundation of the character. Although it is heavily brimmed with action elements, John Wick is also equipped with a bit of emotional baggage. From ancient time, the loss of loved one is an acceptable motive for incoming rampage.

The movie is exhibited with flair, its use of color is simply impressive. Every set piece is done with meticulous vivid visual. The camera angle makes it as though the world of John Wick is seen in different light, almost in the setting of enhanced modern noir. Each action is choreographed meticulously and it's a paramount aspect to make him believable as a lethal force. One of the best things about the action is how the fast pace can be captured with precision. Oftentimes movie employs shaky camera or highly uncoordinated editing. This movie manages to display action with clear focus and crisp movements, even at more crowded setting it never relents or overload the viewer with too much visual information.

Soundtracks help a lot with solemn tone and faster techno rhythm. It's probably one of the best soundtracks of this year, rivaling Hans Zimmerman's from The Amazing Spider-Man 2. There are not many action movies with this high of production value, it certainly packs enough fiery punch to leave a scorch mark for sequel, I won't be surprised if there's even a video game of it. With no Bond, Hunt or Bourne in sight, this may be the time for John Wick.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Its not a bad film but its just one generic fight scene after another. The movie could easily have been shorter, the entire plot is:

1) Burglars kill hard mans new puppy.
2) hard man kills hundreds of men because of 1.
3) Man adopts new puppy.

If Wick went straight from 1 to 3 the movie would have made much more sense.

I have no idea why its rated so highly, its just one predictable generic fight scene after another. It has the usual tough-guy trope where one minute he's invincible, the next minute he's weak and vulnerable, next minute he's magically invincible again.

Keanu plays a good role but there is no plot to speak of and the fight scenes have all been done a thousand times before.

First of all I must say that the story here, while having a standard revenge story structure,is handled with such equisitely good writing and acting that, you just can’t help but really enjoy it once again, since it uses all of the previously known stereotypes of characters, but constantly finds new ways to surpise you and engross you further into it’s world.Keanu Reeves,is an actor that I always liked,he is very good in interviews,he loves what he does and respects the work the directors put in(since he too was a director of “man of tai chi”)and still knows how to be in great physical shape for the stunts and fights, but I have to say that he was able to deliver an emmense amount of emotion in this film. There are scenes here that demand a lot of heart and soul from an actor and it is very pleasing to know that Keanu has handled it so well,it is truly his best performance since the matrix (or “the devil’s advocate”).All of the supporting cast is fantastic as well,Michael Nyqvist plays a highly charismatic and at times hilarious villain,Alfie Allen plays his **** son,who you want to see get beat up and killed. While other big name actors like Willem Defoe and Adrianne Palicki have smaller yet equally great roles,as Marcus(a skilled sniper and an old friend of John),and Perkins(who is hot as hell, fights like most men can’t and has great hair, loved her.).The premise itself is both ludicrous and clever, ludicrous for it’s overall resolution, you would think that a guy killing 84 people for a dog and a car would be dumb and downright idiotic, but because of the way Keanu commits to his job and delivered his performance you just can’t help but root for the poor guy.Meanwhile Derek Kolstad’s script ,establishes the world of John Wick very well, with hotels ,made for hitmen exclusively, that have certain rules, and you get killed for breaking them, the asthetic is mysterious yet very clear and logical and the overall atmosphere and the mood of the story is tonely consistent and very neat. Not only is John wick extremely well written and delivered,it is also masterfully directed ,by first time director Chad Stahelski and David Leitch(who have enormous amounts of stunt choreography and doubling expereince ,working for some of the best action films in recent memory).Since I too want to become a director ,I feel hugely inspired,to see such terrific directorial debuts. The action scenes are long ,inventive, slick ,fluid and well-choreographed.It is all directed steadily and confidently, with blood splatter and shell cases firing all directions and Keanu Reeves using the guns as his extensions rather than normal weapons,I was staring in pure awe and wincing at every bloody headshot, John Wick pulled. And like I said before the music accompanies the action and the fights like some intense orchestra that knows just when to hit to deliver that adrenaline rush of guys beating and shooting the crap out of each other,it may sound primitive, but just wait till you see the “Red Circle”club shootout it is most definitely the best club set-piece I’ve ever seen even better than Tom cruise’s Collateral club scene. It’s the kind of place were electronic dubstep and rocknroll was used to it’s best and most natural, with gunshots mimicking the rises and falls of the music’s rhythm ,it is a deadly dance, with great dancers ,explicit planning and brilliant orchestra, and while the latter action sequences, kind of fall apart just by a tiny, tiny, tiny bit(yes it was that awesome)it still remains a solidly directed action movie.I also loved the color palette of this movie,it was very bright neon, mixed with royal white and deep blue, that made the city of NY all the more vivid and exciting to travel though. All in all it was visually stunning. In conclusion John wick is certainly one of my favorite movies,of the year that uses those precious 96 minutes of runtime to entertain the audience the best it can. It’s brilliance lies in It’s simplicity,it’s complexity lies in it’s choreography and action, and it’s acting performance lies within the grasp of intelligent writing and terrific performance from the main stars, as well as the supporting cast. And to kill a little snoopy dog in cold blood? You lose a star for that alone. The story is a little complicated. It seems that there was a car and a dog and a man trying to grieve over a lost wife. No one ever loses an uncaring fat ugly wife in the movies like in reality. They lose a smoking hot soulmate. Totally irreplaceable.

It's like that, sans that pesky "plot" stuff. Remove all semblance of coherent character development, leave all running and gunning and you got John Wick. It's actually less fun than it sounds. It's like a shooter video game with silly cut-scenes; except you're stuck watching the cut-scenes. This is like a movie based on a crummy videogame, which was based on a B movie. This isn't like watching 1995 Mortal Kombat "so bad it's good", it's like watching an Uwe Bol film, retardedly bad. An action movie without a proper plot is like a shinny sports car without an engine.

I never watch a film without scrutinizing the people involved. I should have known better, I was tricked by my inner Keanu fan. You know how sometimes you watch a flick so bad you feel like punching something? I wrote my first review. This nearly plot-less drivel was written by stunt actors. I didn't know stunt actors could write and direct. The answer is they cannot, specifically, not these guys behind this script. if you want stylish gun action, watch Equilibrium. If you want a great revenge movie, get Deathwish, Taken, Old Boy. I am going to watch Pointbreak, Speed and Matrix back-to-back to lift myself up from the utter let-down that was John Wick. Also, beware the dead CGI puppy.

the Continental really was great and all the assassins sub culture with their rules and gold coins.

Not to long after that, the dog is killed in-front of John Wick, whose sweet ride is then stolen by the son of a mob boss. So the next hour and change is basically Keanu just brutally killing every person that gets in the way of the man hunt for the his dogs killer. This was one of those movie that needs to be seen on the big screen, it has a some of the wildest fights scenes out of any movie I've seen in a long time, a variety of fitting music for the array of scenes and shots. This is by far Keanu Reeves best performances since the Matrix, its been a while since I've seen him put that much emotion into acting in some of the scenes in flick. I can only recommend it to action film fans , however, because I don’t think it is going to largely appeal to people outside that demographic. Is there anything that is new or innovative here or has large deeper meaning? Not really, but it doesn’t need to do any of that, it’s just fine as it is. The pacing is pretty good, the action is excellent and it never over stays its welcome coming in a 101 minutes. The actors deliver pretty decent performances. It’s the exact film I needed to see after the last two reviews I had done!! However, I am in no mad rush to return to this film and I think I possibly might have enjoyed it more if the hype hadn’t built it up and if I had seen this before Kingsman. A sequel has already been announced, but I came out of the Cinema thinking that I think this film would work better as a solo film and I am slightly concerned that it will become like the ‘Taken’ movies where they would have been better staying as ‘one film’!!
The action scenes are long ,inventive, slick ,fluid and well-choreographed(that makes even “the raid ”look back and be like:”damn that’s badass !”)it is all directed steadily and confidently, with blood splatter and shell cases firing all directions and Keanu Reeves using the guns as his extensions rather than normal weapons,I was staring in pure awe and wincing at every bloody headshot, John Wick pulled.
It’s brilliance lies in It’s simplicity,it’s complexity lies in it’s choreography and action, and it’s acting performance lies within the grasp of intelligent writing and groundbreaking performance from the main stars and the supporting one as well.It is a big HUGE shame to my country to not release this film in theaters and it is an even bigger shame to force me to pirate and not support this film,so I hope with this review at least someone from you will check it out ,because it’s worth every penny.

StopFunny how there are some really serious reviews complaining about "been there, done that," "story is horrendous," or "It's all glorified violence." To that I say, did you see what the trailer was even establishing with this film? Stop complaining about the violence! You know what you are getting into!

This is a straight up action, and in all it's glory, I loved it!!

Just look at the trailer again, and realize what you are walking into. A simple story, with some of the most beautifully choreographed action scenes that flow (and ontop of that, the dialogue is awesome to boot! and acting, and everything!).

I haven't seen this great of action since "The Raid 2."

To be fair however, I am a huge action movie fan, so I was automatically giving it browny points there.

What "Equalizer" failed to do (it's a good action film itself, but too slow for my taste) this film makes up for it.

Looking for a great drama? Look elsewhere.
Uneasy about the body-count? Then look elsewhere.

It was a ton of fun. Not every movie caters to every person, the trailer specifically makes that clear what it's going for.

Same with any movie nowadays ("TMNT" exclusively for kids, albeit it has a lot of questionable humor [it's Michael Bay of course]).

Loved every moment of it, knew what the film was going for and didn't walk away, but instead re-watched it on Blu Ray, cause it was that spectacular!

Three things you shouldn't do to a bad-ass:

1. Ruining his life
2. Kill he's family
3. Push him till he snaps

The story is about ex-hitman comes out of retirement to track down the gangsters that took everything from him.

When I first heard the news that this movie was getting made and the face that two directors that never directed anything before I thought it was going to be a load of crap, but it turns out I was wrong and this movie is awesome.

Keanu Reeves is simple at his best here, even if he's not the greatest actor on the planet, he does try every role and in this movie he does. The directors of the film David Leitch and Chad Stahelski both do a excellent and fantastic job of directing this movie and I found out that these two are actually stunt men. The villain was good, the action scenes were shot perfectly.

Towards the end of the movie felt a bit cliche for me. You know in every action movie that the main hero is facing off the main bad guy and they shouting out one liners at each other, you know what I mean and that to me felt like the writer's got lazy half way through.

John Wick has to be the biggest surprise for me with it's intelligent writing and nail biting action scenes.

The action is fantastic throughout most of the film, the gunplay is some of the best in modern cinema, and the unique elements of the film make for a combination of intrigue and strange humor that make the fairly short movie a joy to watch. If you're asking me if John Wick is a good quality movie, the answer is more of a "meh, not really... but it's not bad." The acting is almost non-existent (seemingly by design to fit Keanu Reeves' style), the plot is about as generic as they come, and the ending is laughable. During the first 90% of the film, they made an effort to be as realistic as possible. That end sequence almost erased all of it. It was still an entertaining movie but I was hoping for more. Expand

If comic book heroes excite you, then by all means watch "John Wick". If the topic of actual real-life organized crime killers interests you then what you should see is one of the documentaries about Richard "The Iceman" Kuklinski, who is reputed to have killed dozens, if not hundreds, by way of the Gambino's DeMeo crew.

I give this film a 3 because if a character is going to take out an entire platoon of assassins he or she better be wearing spandex -- that or having flashbacks about Master Po.

There is no story. There is a lot of action but it's directed at people in a conflated way that attempts to combine the death of the protagonists wife by cancer with the killing of his dog, which were two separate events that have very little to do with each other. Again although the killing of his dog was brutal, the protagonist wrongly conflates the two issues together. There is no background on his character at all which makes me wonder if there was a comic book I was supposed to read beforehand. There is plenty of death and action scenes that serve no point at all but then to just be brutal. The movie draws regular allusions to Keanu Reeves previous movies like "The Matrix" , "Matrix Reloaded", and "Matrix Revolutions" with a keymaker type character (was it even the same actor?) and the ending scene being in the rain between him and one person colliding to name a couple. However this movie is nothing like what it alludes to at all. Not in action or in plot substance.

Now for some speculation. This movie was so bad, I almost wonder if the entire thing was thought up by Eva Longoria (no joke that's one of the producers) to try and make men with dogs seem intimidating. There is trend going around where many single men adopt dogs instead of girlfriends so it really makes you wonder. This should give you an idea of the possibly terrible hipster thinking behind this movie.

1 out of 10. Get laid again instead of adopting dogs to fill your void, and don't conflate issues.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Some of the acting and fight scenes in this were... kinda comical? Or maybe the word I'm looking for is "realistic". It's not *all* about punches and kicks that sound like a small explosion is going off every time they happen, and there's often random pauses in the middle of each battle -- all of this is fairly similar to how it would happen in real life I think. Reminds me of the end fight scene in the movie "Taxi Driver", initially it looked like erratic, odd, sub-par acting, but in fact it was likely orchestrated like that to make it seem real. Guess we've all just gotten too used to the Micheal Bay-eske explosions and stuff. Although the acting & fighting was still great.

Like when the main antagonist's father's henchman (don't know his name) says "Russian c**ksucker" then falls on his ass when leaving the car! Or how the farther alternates between the serious personality, and the flippant one, the latter which probably highlights how 'ridiculous' it is that John is trying to kill him apparently for the sake of it it seems. The movie doesn't take itself too seriously.

Not to mention the fact that 3/4 of the movie/plot involves a constant manhunt between the protagonist, and the antagonist; the remaining 1/4 was pretty much witty one liners... The movie in general was constant fight scenes -- does that mean the plot was weak, or is that what they were going for? Not sure. Lots of action, but lacked a clear start, middle, and end -- it seemed like it was over so quickly.

Overall I liked it, but it left me wanting something more.

The problem with this occasional god mode palate cleanser is you have to really sell such a herculean character to your audience. John Wick accomplishes this task in spades, with both enemies and allies speaking the name John Wick in whispered and reverent tones before we watch Reeve dispatch his opponents like so much wet paper. Every time Reeves bleeds is almost an affront to both the character and the viewer as he almost reluctantly tears his way through the film. The end result is one of the most satisfying action films since Reeves dodged bullets in slow-mo back in 99. Expand

So movies include romance to help the audience connect with the characters, but I mean I don't give an absolute **** about how much John loves his wife. Is he killing random people just because he can?? His wife will sure be pleased with what he did and not regret having sent him the dog. Expand

John Wick: The Review
The awards season has rolled its head around once more. Either you love it or hate it, but it comes every year. One movie that didn’t receive any recognition is a movie called “John Wick” starring Keanu Reeves. John Wick was a stylized action movie that was unique enough to warrant high praise like an Oscar nomination. This beautifully choreographed action movie with Reeves shooting his way through the Russian mob. However, the movie has only received minor praise by winning some rewards and nominations. While getting snubbed from all major award ceremonies. However, John Wick should be considered on that top tier of movies in 2014.
This Chad Stahelski directed film is set in New York and came out last October. It’s Stahelski’s first major film and Reeves comeback movie. Besides “47 Ronin” it has been 6 years since Reeves stared in a major motion picture. It hasn’t been since 2003’s “Matrix Reloaded” that he’s stared in a movie that got positive ratings from critics. Reeves has also accumulated six Golden Raspberry Awards or Razzies for short. The Razzies is an awards ceremony that gives awards for the worst in film. The movie has earned Reeves some critical praise for his portrayal of the mob hit man.
The movie centers around a man named John Wick (Keanu Reeves). It begins with his wife (played by Bridget Moynahan) who had just died from an undisclosed illness. Wick had just settled down after getting out of hitman business. His last link to a normal life was just taken from him. His wife has one last gift for and it’s in the form of a puppy. John Wick has felt a short of comfort in the fact that a piece of his wife is with him and he now has a companion. Makes his loneliness bearable.
Unfortunate events lead to the house being broken into, the car stolen, and the dog killed. Set on revenge, John Wick tries to find the men who did it. Wick discovers from a friend that the son (Alfie Allen) of the Russian mob boss (Michael Nyqvist) was involved. Wick is ultimately pulled into the life that he tried so hard to get away from. This sends him down a tale of revenge and despair. Wick tries to seek revenge for the last thing in his life that he held dear to his heart.
John Wick is ultimately an action movies. This doesn’t hurt the movie at all, as the movie gets A in every category. The movie is a beautiful display of camera perfection. The cinematography is what sets it apart from most movies these days. Everything has this blue colorful tone around the lens. The camera gives colorful detail and Johnathan Sela. (Cinematographer) dominates at his craft. This camera allows the subtleness of Stahelski direction allows the movie to shine.
Though the best part is both the dialogue and the acting. Keanu Reeves history doesn’t affect his fantastic work in this movie. Delivering a performance that could rival Bruce Willis in the movie “Die Hard”. His diameter is very subtle like the movie is trying to be. He delivers the splendid dialogue like it comes out naturally. “People keep asking if I’m back, yeah I’m think I’m back!” The realistic and phenomenal performances leave the audiences wanting more.
Overall, “John Wick” might have some action clichés. However, the movie accelerants past most movies of this year with a great plot, breathtaking performances, and dialogue that will impress Shakespeare.

As an action movie it delivers with astonishingly choreographed fight scenes, stylish visuals, and a cool main character. If that was everything a movie needed it would be close to perfect but John Wick also has a strange breed of stupidity running through its veins. This manifests itself in cartoonish characters, a last act that goes a little too far over the top and an overplayed song ("killin strangers"). Luckily though the movie knows very well that it's just a fun, well put together B movie. It never takes itself too seriously and this helps it make it past some of its more clichéd and dimwitted aspects. Keanu isn't what any respectable film buff would call a truly good actor but he fits perfectly into this role and even on occasion gets a scarily focused look in his eyes when he's taking out the trash. On a side note, if the last act of the movie would have stayed closer in tone and style to the incredible club scenes it would probably have fared even better. As is it's fun and I'm looking forward to the sequel. Expand

Please leave any scepticism about this film you had behind you as this film is possibly my favourite action film of 2014.
The premise is pretty idiotic, but it doesn’t matter at all as this film is fully self-aware, playing out stylistically like a videogame merged with an action film.
The choreography alone is impressive enough to make you watch this action romp but with nice subtle touches of foreshadowing and imagery throughout John Wick justifies itself as being an impressive action film.
The action sequences are explosive and the stylised violence really gets you fully immersed in the visceral carnage on screen; and these action scenes are absolute carnage. The night club scene in this film is one of the best action sequences I’ve seen in years.
Keanu Reeve’s is also back on form mastering not only the same deadpan kind of fighting style as he had in films like the Matrix but also adopting legitimate styles of shooting to make these somewhat video game-like action sequences feel to a certain extent realistic.
Also, the hitman/mafia kind of secret society club is a lovely touch and is actually a really interesting addition to the film that I would love to see them delve into more.
The film also has a few comedic moments that really make this film feel genuinely refreshing against all the rehashed action franchises we have rivalling this like Fast & Furious and The Transporter, etc.
However, my main and only problem I have with this film is probably the fact the film is dragged out a bit towards the in, being probably about 15 minutes too long. I wasn’t as interested or engaged in the last portion of the film and it is a kind of underwhelming finale bearing in mind some of the incredible action sequences before. It’s not bad just a bit too long and disappointing.
All in all, John Wick is a breath of fresh air we should all take in.

As i love to watch great movies over and over; i usually base my score on whether a movie has enough merit to watch again. In this case i found the story too predictable. Hard nut man crawls out from his hole to kill bad guys who killed his dog - his dead wife's last gift. I even predicted he'd find another dog :( There were no twists, no new age story line nothing just the same old kick ass story. Not that it was bad, by all means its definitely worth watching. Its exciting! I just expected a little more story intrigue. Expand

If you are hoping to find a Matrix knock off this is not it. If you are hoping to find a deep original movie, this is not it. If you just want a fun action flick to kill a couple of hours, this is it.

I think if you watch this for what it is, just entertainment, you will enjoy it. Reeves delivered the tough reserved killer role. I am sure his training for the Matrix helped a ton in making him a great fit for this.

The action is graphic. I appreciated the little touches, such as showing him take extra shots to make sure his enemies are dead. Naturally, the physics get pushed to unreal levels at times, but not as bad as many films have done.

If actions films is what you love, this is well worth watching. If you are not big on violence, you may want to skip this.

The worst problem was the intrusiveness of the “musical” score, which I think would have worked great as background to the action, but was either deliberately too loud in the print or the theater jacked up the sound out of incompetence. Other than that I enjoyed all the “character actors” in supporting roles, and Keanu Reeves was (I guess) as good as he could be in the lead role. He did have presence and was fun to watch. As for the rest, there was not much plot and few surprises, a bit too many “head shots” to the point where they got boring (!). Other than a nice gray tone and some swanky sets, this movie was surprisingly dull for an “action” film. I can see why it didn’t make #1 at the box office this week. Expand

Criminal hitman (what other type is there, oh, maybe government hitman, cos their legal right?) who renounces his evil ways due to falling in love.......zzzzzzzzzz (yes, I know, wake up!), who gets forced back into the murky underworld as .... I wont spoil it - but its the best reason ever to start killing people again.
Acting is as you would expect it from all involved. Some very wooden scenes played by very plastic actors built around some pretty impressive sets and great soundtrack. Cant wait to get this on Blu-Ray simply to watch the club scene on full blast. Very atmospheric would recommend to anyone who likes bang bang, kill kill, boom boom kind of films.
if you are looking for intelligence, stay away - this script has been done a thousand times (apart from the main reason for him digging up his old ways) - if you are looking for that comforting film equivalent of hand to mouth action that popcorn provides, this film is for you.

Second time watching. And it's even better this time around.

There is nothing in this film that you have not seen before: Just a good ol' revenge flick with a very simple premise. Heck, even the challenges that our protagonist faces mirror those of an RPG like Borderlands, with the boss fights being the toughest and John Wick having to level, in a way, in order to face these challenges.

What makes the film 10/10 great is the amazing action sequences. And Keanu Reeves' screen presence. Frankly, I'm tired of films building up their protagonists as firearms masters only to have disappointingly few action sequences involving guns. In this film, you will see some incredible gunplay that is sure to exhilarate and entertain. Great film!

Then some thugs steal his car and kill his dog and he snaps. That really is all there is to the story as Wick (Reeves) goes on a rampage of revenge killing anyone who gets in his way. Hyper stylish and short on dialogue this may well be a case of style over substance, but what style!! A career resurgence for Reeves who shoots, cuts and stabs his way through the movie barely changing facial expression, but is perfect for the emotionally dead, single minded assassin. It may not break new ground for the genre, but what it does, it does very well indeed. Expand

And yet this movie is not like others in this genre. Combining the emotion and excellent minimalist backstory of the opening portion, this movie has much more feel to it than some others. This is played largely by just how sorry you feel for Wick the deeper into his past you go.

Great movie with more there than you first see.

From brilliantly choreographed fight scene to brilliantly choreographed fight scene, this one is a labor of love from directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch and it shows. Their direction is assured, especially for a debut. A beautifully shot and crafted action thriller, this film shows it is not just a dog. It is what the dog represents, especially for Mr. Wick. The backstory is great, as is the world created by the film. I cannot wait for the sequel now, just to see more of this world of crime and its various characters. Keanu Reeves is great, as is Michael Nyqvist. John Leguizamo and Ian McShane have small roles here, but I enjoyed their performances all the same. Additionally, Willem Defoe is very good. Overall, John Wick is a menacing little action thriller that hits all the right notes and is thoroughly captivating. Expand

Basically end of plot as Wick's gun, knife, fist toting revenge goes into action. The puppy was cute. The audience will forgive anything Wick does and quite right. I think quite a few low voters assumed the movie was just another action movie to be taken at face value and misunderstood what was going on because they missed important things and the reason why this movie was great. John Wick has a moral compass, but he is selfish and lets this ruin him and others around him. He wants a way out of responsibility and way to justify why he killed people, at one point he blames someone else for why so many people died, even though he hammered through that blank slate. He is responsible, but the movie is responsible ultimately. The early parts of the movie are very important in explaining how it works. The movie gives you just enough back-story and information to not make the movie meaningless violence but rather make you interested in what is actually going on with John Wick. There is a ton of symbolism in this movie. The great thing is it doesn't stray from the cliches of action movies. But the greatest character is the Russian's son, he is the opposite of John Wick, yet he shares some of his characteristics. Ultimately they are both as useless and one will die because of what he did. Even the fight parts of this movie are fairly well done, the way John Wick can just kill tells you a lot when he doesn't simply kill. Expand

Her last gift to him was little dog which gets killed by some evil people. John Wick sets out to kill those who killed the only thing he had ... and there's the premise. The story is nothing special at all. It just moderately entertains you while you wait for more fights. Speaking of the fights, this movie has a lot of them. Usually in movies an abundance of fighting can get boring and tedious 'cough' Transformers 'cough', but in this film they are all interesting and awesome. Every fight scene is beautifully done and have a unique elements to each. Seriously though every fight is cool. So the story is mediocre and just holds you over until the next action sequence.

Keanu Reeves (Matrix) who portrays John Wick is absolutely amazing. Without him in this role I highly doubt the film would have been as enjoyable as it is. Really awesome. Viggo Tarasov who is the antagonist of this story is played by Micheal Nyqvist. He doesn't really stand out in the film, but this is mostly due to Keanu Reeves doing an excellent job.

John Wick is definitely portraying Keanu Reeves rather than the other way round who used to be expressionless or impassive, cool and less talking, and perhaps his personality and life experience might be the two important factors that make him suits perfectly in this character full with sorrow, miserable and anger. More than three quarters of the film are filled with stylish scores, adrenalin-rush and thrilling action art sequences captured in great angles and cinematography, but the emotional built-up and the relationship with the cute puppy in the beginning seems to be too short, pushing the film towards a slight monotonous ending. So I was taken aback by the amazing amount of violence in this film and was surprised how much I liked it. Keanu Reeves plays the title role of John Wick, a widowed 'retired' hitman of extraordinary skill who is brought back into the fold when a team of home invaders beat him up and kill the dog bequeathed to him by his dead wife. Directed and conceived by Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, who worked with Reeves on 'The Matrix', the film is a throwback to old fashioned non-CGI choreographed non-stop violence. Reeves excels in this role. He is perfectly suited for this action orientated, unemotional, non-speaking role as he tears his way through the minions of his former underworld boss. 'John Wick' is how a violent action film should be done. Highly recommended but not for a date night unless your partner in into this sort of thing. Expand

The Good: Keanu Reeves makes his return to the action genre, and what a return it is. Well choreographed and wildly entertaining, "John Wick" is one of the better action flicks of 2014. Reeves excels as a retired hitman who just can't seem to stay away from his previous life. Assisting Reeves is a very solid supporting cast (Dean Winters, Ian McShane, Willem Dafoe, and Micheal Nyqvist turn in especially entertaining performances) that add just enough action, drama, and humor to create a well-rounded film.

The Bad: The premise is a little silly at times. It clearly didn't ruin the film, but it did take away from it somewhat. As expected for this sort of film, it does degenerate a tad into standard fare and some aspects of the ending where a little underwhelming.

Once again, Keanu Reeves comes back to kick a lot of asses.
A retired murderer named John Wick goes back to the business seeking for revenge from the ones that took the last shine of hope in his life. We've heard that thing before many times, I know. Maybe this film isn't terribly original, or maybe you never really completely worry about all the characters's faith, but this is one of the best action movies of 2014. Everything is done right. The movie places really well how bad-ass is the main character, having everyone fearing him. Every gunfire in it looks completely realistic, you are never going to note something that looks fake, and you are not going to feel bored during the entire runtime, and Keanu Reeves is just excellent as an actor. Maybe there are some cliches, and maybe the movie doesn't have the best lightning, but nobody cares about that when they are watching really nice, exciting, realistic action sequences. I repeat, one of the best action movies of 2014.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film is like a barrel of the cheapest vodka - unpretentious, but competent in what you buy it for. Namely to cheer over some good, old, raw violence. The plot is simplest it could be. Uberassassin Neo loses his wife to cancer and Theon Greyjoy kills his car and steals the little puppy she left for Neo to take care of (or the other way around, it does not really matter). There is only one thinkable reaction to this - murder Theon, his Russian mafia boss father, and everyone that gets in the way. Luckily, there is this hotel owned by Odin and managed by leutenant Daniels from Wire that houses all the assassins in the world and sees that they don't assassinate themselves in the hotel. Except they do. Then there is this chick. Well, better not to think about it much, it's as braindead as all the corpses the thin plot manages to manufacture on the way. At least the action is slick and well choreographed, no cheap shakycam like Bourne, and there is satisfying number of nice black cars, leather and quality booze - yes, sir, Blanton's is a fine bourbon, so points for that! Meh. Ok action movie with at least at surface sensible plot and some cool scenes. Pretty cheesy. I didn't enjoy it.
