Suffice to say it's far from the only action movie to have a retired hitman make a comeback and hunt down mob members for revenge. The mob bosses son (Game of Thrones' Alfie Allen) is quite the cliche. Outside of a particularly interesting assassin hotel with a unique "management" system predictable elements are abound. However the film knows this and uses it to it's advantage.

There are quite a few funny moments surrounding how scared everyone is of John Wick. Don't mistake for thinking the film isn't taking itself seriously though. While it's not afraid to poke fun at it's cliche, B-revenge movie elements, the tone stays legit and hard for the sake of the action. Which outside of an excellent performance by Reeves is the best thing about this movie.

It doesn't rely on the same shootouts and fist-fights just about every action movie has been re-using for years. It's brutal, fast, excellently shot, and a heck of a lot of fun to watch. With smart tricks and instinct most haven't been seen before, both Reeves and director Chad Stahelski make John Wick look like the almost unstoppable threat everyone says he is.

It's a fun and furious ride that's sure to scratch the itch of even the most demanding action junkies. It's also an excellent film for Reeves. He plays the character so cool he's able to suck you in before the bullets start flying. So if you're looking for an excellent action film "John Wick" is the one I highly recommend. Re-used plot elements aside, it's a fresh and smart action movie.

My total score for the film is a 9.9/10.

A semi-realistic action movie.
It's fun to watch and a very good fight scene.
I hope the sequel has more back story on to it and describes the criminal world more. Honestly, I want a prequel to this movie not a sequel

It doesn't have a crazy plot that makes it easy to get lost its just basic. You don't have to wait long for the action to begin and when it starts it goes pretty much right through to the end. I really hope that this is the beginning of a franchise because it certainly looks that way. I hope this film gets some attention because I didn't hear much talk about it and its run in the theatre went by fairly quietly (although it did make 50 million bucks of profit). It also great to see Keanu Reeves find a role that seems to spark a comeback for him. John Wick may become one of his significant roles in the future. Expand

Despite the simplistic script and story, this film had me riveted to the screen at all times in anticipation of what was going to happen next. I’m very glad I didn’t blink as this film killed four cinnamon sticks, out of five, in my cup of tea.

The plot seems cliche'd and the film began it started out as a "B" movie, then the action starts the performances by the actors is some kick ass fun with tip-top characters such as Dafoe, Reeves, Michael Nyqvist ( basically the characters through out were blowing up my mind!) when the movie first began i thought it out was predictable (thanks a lot trailer!) stuntman Chad Stahelski's first directorial debut, was actually quite impressive the guy knows action! and smooth cinematography i want to see this "stuntman" behind the camera more! "John Wick" 10 Scale Rating: 7.5 (Very Good) ...

The Good: Keanu Reeves makes his return to the action genre, and what a return it is. Well choreographed and wildly entertaining, "John Wick" is one of the better action flicks of 2014. Reeves excels as a retired hitman who just can't seem to stay away from his previous life. Assisting Reeves is a very solid supporting cast (Dean Winters, Ian McShane, Willem Dafoe, and Micheal Nyqvist turn in especially entertaining performances) that add just enough action, drama, and humor to create a well-rounded film.

The Bad: The premise is a little silly at times. It clearly didn't ruin the film, but it did take away from it somewhat. As expected for this sort of film, it does degenerate a tad into standard fare and some aspects of the ending where a little underwhelming.

Once again, Keanu Reeves comes back to kick a lot of asses.
A retired murderer named John Wick goes back to the business seeking for revenge from the ones that took the last shine of hope in his life. We've heard that thing before many times, I know. Maybe this film isn't terribly original, or maybe you never really completely worry about all the characters's faith, but this is one of the best action movies of 2014. Everything is done right. The movie places really well how bad-ass is the main character, having everyone fearing him. Every gunfire in it looks completely realistic, you are never going to note something that looks fake, and you are not going to feel bored during the entire runtime, and Keanu Reeves is just excellent as an actor. Maybe there are some cliches, and maybe the movie doesn't have the best lightning, but nobody cares about that when they are watching really nice, exciting, realistic action sequences. I repeat, one of the best action movies of 2014.

This movie is, like his last attempt, a bunch of cliche film tropes with barely any original shots, plot ideas, characters or dialogue. The film is well produced having substantial advertising and even a videogame tie in but the actual movie shows naivety in it's inability to take risks or show originality. From the start the characters and their motivations are dis-interesting and bland, we're introduced to several characters like they're important, only to have them die seconds later or get 3 minutes of screentime . With nothing at stake the events that progress the plot have no impact or hold any importance to the viewer, meanwhile the characters in the scenes react weirdly and unrealistically to whats happening, making everyone appear heavily autistic or simply insane. Weird editing seemingly cuts all connecting shots in the film leaving it disjointed and awkward, there's no sense of immersion because the movie only tells and never shows to the point of frustration. John just does **** off screen, critical interactions between characters are just imposed instead of created. Simply put this movie is **** boring, it's not a well made B movie, it's a poorly made B movie with an A movie budget.

John Wick is a real piece of **** from the extremely dated 90s emo soundtrack ft Marilyn Manson constantly to the tediously cliche scenes, awkward writing, and 1 dimensional characters the movie really comes across as a script written and directed by a child.

I would not recommend this movie to anyone. Unless you desperately want to see Reeves not give a **** in yet another movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. ok, it's a bad movie. I've exected something simple yet smart (like Dredd) but what i've got...

1) The plot: old killer is in retirement, and some stupid spoiled kid kills his dog, so he goes on and kill spoiled kid, his father and every other dude on the way. It's not an oversimpliifcation, it's the actual plot.
2) The characters: John Wick is well...stylish, brutal, silent, but generic and boring. His the best killer ever and everyone - i've mean cop, receptionist, car repair owner, bartender, neighbours in the hotel - knows best killer in the face, by his name, knows his wife and about his retirement. Other guys just there. Russian godfather at least have SOME charisma, but it's as good as it gets.
3) The action: plain boring. There is no good choreography, no clever moves, no planing, nothing worth watching. Best killer, famous for performing impossible jobs acts as lazy hitman player - just shoot everyone on sight.
4) The russians (yep, i'm russian myself): Come on guys. Russian bad guys are cool, but at least make them not absurd. Baba Yaga (which was translated as Boogeyman) is actually charismatic clever very old lady (basically a witch), acts as both bad and good character in slavic folklore. Songs are out of place, accent is bad, phrases are wrong. (please note what is not about "as a russian i was insulted"; it's about overall quality and lazy work done with source material. It's really not that hard to do right.)
5) The connection: John Wick and villains are so plain and boring what you just do not care. You don't want to see spoiled kid dead (ask Game of Thrones fans about it), you don't want to see his father dead, you don't feel for John and his "friends".
6) The lore: for some reason killers have their own awesome hotel, use gold coins as currency (i've just assume it was old Russian Empire golden rubles - it's makes it even more absurd), everyone knows each other by name and in the face - yep, it's include the police. Awesome.

In the end it's just plain boring and bad movie without plot. 3/10

Action, gun fights, and pet ownership are the best terms to describe this movie. Keanu Reeves doesn't have a lot of lines, which is probably a good thing, and he does most of his talking through gunfire anyway. The only negative is that some of the action choreography gets repetitive. This movie was terrible; the director obviously wanted to make a video game or has only ever played video games.
While it had some original realism touches like body blow sounds (ie lack of them), the whole story was seriously deficient and the premise of it was just plain dumb.

I really hate movies where the protagonist varies so wildly in strength and ability... start get beaten up by 3 punks... then manages to kill +12 people with guns. Sharp shooter one moment then can't hit an idiot running behind a glass pain with 4 shots.

So total crap movie with no story and nothing positive to add to the genre.

It's like that, sans that pesky "plot" stuff. Remove all semblance of coherent character development, leave all running and gunning and you got John Wick. It's actually less fun than it sounds. It's like a shooter video game with silly cut-scenes; except you're stuck watching the cut-scenes. This is like a movie based on a crummy videogame, which was based on a B movie. This isn't like watching 1995 Mortal Kombat "so bad it's good", it's like watching an Uwe Bol film, retardedly bad. An action movie without a proper plot is like a shinny sports car without an engine.

I never watch a film without scrutinizing the people involved. I should have known better, I was tricked by my inner Keanu fan. You know how sometimes you watch a flick so bad you feel like punching something? I wrote my first review. This nearly plot-less drivel was written by stunt actors. I didn't know stunt actors could write and direct. The answer is they cannot, specifically, not these guys behind this script. if you want stylish gun action, watch Equilibrium. If you want a great revenge movie, get Deathwish, Taken, Old Boy. I am going to watch Pointbreak, Speed and Matrix back-to-back to lift myself up from the utter let-down that was John Wick. Also, beware the dead CGI puppy.

the Continental really was great and all the assassins sub culture with their rules and gold coins.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Retired hitman John Wick's late wife leaves him a puppy to love instead, now that she's dead. Gangsters break in, beat John, kill the puppy and steal Wick's car. Wick goes on a revenge spree for the death of the dog.
Basically end of plot as Wick's gun, knife, fist toting revenge goes into action. The puppy was cute. The audience will forgive anything Wick does and quite right. Very well made, played and choreographed, with a cool style in terms of look, "John Wick" proves to be one of the best action films in years, with Keanu pitch perfect as the hero. Excellent.

So I was taken aback by the amazing amount of violence in this film and was surprised how much I liked it. Keanu Reeves plays the title role of John Wick, a widowed 'retired' hitman of extraordinary skill who is brought back into the fold when a team of home invaders beat him up and kill the dog bequeathed to him by his dead wife. Directed and conceived by Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, who worked with Reeves on 'The Matrix', the film is a throwback to old fashioned non-CGI choreographed non-stop violence. Reeves excels in this role. He is perfectly suited for this action orientated, unemotional, non-speaking role as he tears his way through the minions of his former underworld boss. 'John Wick' is how a violent action film should be done. Highly recommended but not for a date night unless your partner in into this sort of thing. Expand

John Wick is definitely portraying Keanu Reeves rather than the other way round who used to be expressionless or impassive, cool and less talking, and perhaps his personality and life experience might be the two important factors that make him suits perfectly in this character full with sorrow, miserable and anger. More than three quarters of the film are filled with stylish scores, adrenalin-rush and thrilling action art sequences captured in great angles and cinematography, but the emotional built-up and the relationship with the cute puppy in the beginning seems to be too short, pushing the film towards a slight monotonous ending. Wick is sick. Go on, you can take the literal one here.

First things first, you don't kill the cutest beagle on the planet, that too a pup, in a movie! We are not yet ready for that! But if you do, which as a matter of fact, ‪Theon Greyjoy‬ did, just make sure it is avenged right. ‪Ramsay Bolton‬ are you listening?

Okay, so we already knew the plot thanks to the trailer that spoke louder than ‪Keanu Reeves‬. With thousands of clichéd stories of agents, mercenaries and hit men that are out there, Wick has nothing much to offer. Except one thing - rad action. Headshots, exquisite finishes, gore and Mustang engine revving are sheer orgasmic. But what it lacks big time is a proper storyline.

The direction is not that great either. We often see building shots of the city for like 5-7 times that are downright dispensable. Fight sequences were pretty cool though. Who are the directors again? Stuntmen? Okay. That explains it. What can we expect?

There is literally no drama present in the movie, and the entire movie carries a background beat that goes boom boom, which makes it an effort to concentrate on the dialogues dispersed. The score is well, trance, basically.

It is as if the directors thought - "let's just build up a huge crowd of hooligans and let Keanu shoot them one by one from different angles, nay make him headshot each one of them, and there will be lots of blood spluttering, and let him drive something kewwwwwl too. While we are at it, let us give him a badass name. John Wick! Has a nice ring to it!"

Passable stuff. Watch only for the action.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As I was sitting in John Wick, counting bullets and dead bodies dropping to the floor, I realized that over the last 5 decades I must have seen about 6000 movies. This one was easily among the top 5 worst ones on my list. It is guaranteed plot-less, and focuses mainly on extreme violence. Even in its violent scenes it is merely silly. Why would a trained assassin who already killed 50 people miss his main target? Not very likely. Yes, the choreography of the fight scenes is nice, but Hong Kong movies have done this even better about 2-3 decades ago. It is sad to see good actors such as Willem Dafoe languish in such a sub-par mess. What is the target audience for it? 17-year old video-game playing nerds with an IQ of a blender. This movie is a waste of time. Expand

First of all I must say that the story here, while having a standard revenge story structure,is handled with such equisitely good writing and acting that, you just can’t help but really enjoy it once again, since it uses all of the previously known stereotypes of characters, but constantly finds new ways to surpise you and engross you further into it’s world.Keanu Reeves,is an actor that I always liked,he is very good in interviews,he loves what he does and respects the work the directors put in(since he too was a director of “man of tai chi”)and still knows how to be in great physical shape for the stunts and fights, but I have to say that he was able to deliver an emmense amount of emotion in this film. There are scenes here that demand a lot of heart and soul from an actor and it is very pleasing to know that Keanu has handled it so well,it is truly his best performance since the matrix (or “the devil’s advocate”).All of the supporting cast is fantastic as well,Michael Nyqvist plays a highly charismatic and at times hilarious villain,Alfie Allen plays his **** son,who you want to see get beat up and killed. While other big name actors like Willem Defoe and Adrianne Palicki have smaller yet equally great roles,as Marcus(a skilled sniper and an old friend of John),and Perkins(who is hot as hell, fights like most men can’t and has great hair, loved her.).The premise itself is both ludicrous and clever, ludicrous for it’s overall resolution, you would think that a guy killing 84 people for a dog and a car would be dumb and downright idiotic, but because of the way Keanu commits to his job and delivered his performance you just can’t help but root for the poor guy.Meanwhile Derek Kolstad’s script ,establishes the world of John Wick very well, with hotels ,made for hitmen exclusively, that have certain rules, and you get killed for breaking them, the asthetic is mysterious yet very clear and logical and the overall atmosphere and the mood of the story is tonely consistent and very neat.
Not only is John wick extremely well written and delivered,it is also masterfully directed ,by first time director Chad Stahelski and David Leitch(who have enormous amounts of stunt choreography and doubling expereince ,working for some of the best action films in recent memory).Since I too want to become a director ,I feel hugely inspired,to see such terrific directorial debuts. The action scenes are long ,inventive, slick ,fluid and well-choreographed(that makes even “the raid ”look back and be like:”damn that’s badass !”)it is all directed steadily and confidently, with blood splatter and shell cases firing all directions and Keanu Reeves using the guns as his extensions rather than normal weapons,I was staring in pure awe and wincing at every bloody headshot, John Wick pulled. And like I said before the music accompanies the action and the fights like some intense orchestra that knows just when to hit to deliver that adrenaline rush of guys beating and shooting the crap out of each other,it may sound primitive, but just wait till you see the “Red Circle”club shootout it is most definitely the best club set-piece I’ve ever seen even better than Tom cruise’s Collateral club scene. It’s the kind of place were electronic dubstep and rocknroll was used to it’s best and most natural, with gunshots mimicking the rises and falls of the music’s rhythm ,it is a deadly dance, with great dancers ,explicit planning and brilliant orchestra, and while the latter action sequences, kind of fall apart just by a tiny, tiny, tiny bit(yes it was that awesome)it still remains a solidly directed action movie.I also loved the color palette of this movie,it was very bright neon, mixed with royal white and deep blue, that made the city of NY all the more vivid and exciting to travel though. All in all it was visually stunning.
In conclusion John wick is certainly one of my favorite movies,of the year that uses those precious 96 minutes of runtime to entertain the audience the best it can. It’s brilliance lies in It’s simplicity,it’s complexity lies in it’s choreography and action, and it’s acting performance lies within the grasp of intelligent writing and groundbreaking performance from the main stars and the supporting one as well.It is a big HUGE shame to my country to not release this film in theaters and it is an even bigger shame to force me to pirate and not support this film,so I hope with this review at least someone from you will check it out ,because it’s worth every penny.

Her last gift to him was little dog which gets killed by some evil people. John Wick sets out to kill those who killed the only thing he had ... and there's the premise. The story is nothing special at all. It just moderately entertains you while you wait for more fights. Speaking of the fights, this movie has a lot of them. Usually in movies an abundance of fighting can get boring and tedious 'cough' Transformers 'cough', but in this film they are all interesting and awesome. Every fight scene is beautifully done and have a unique elements to each. Seriously though every fight is cool. So the story is mediocre and just holds you over until the next action sequence.

Keanu Reeves (Matrix) who portrays John Wick is absolutely amazing. Without him in this role I highly doubt the film would have been as enjoyable as it is. Really awesome. Viggo Tarasov who is the antagonist of this story is played by Micheal Nyqvist. He doesn't really stand out in the film, but this is mostly due to Keanu Reeves doing an excellent job.

Although John Wick may have great acting and tons of action, it may be on the edge of overdone. I'd consider it as just another action-flick, with an original, but dumb plot, this film just didn't appeal to me..

It's a crucial requirement for hitmen to have a mediocre first name and quirky last name, as seen with Bond or Bourne, by this standard, John Wick has secured himself in pantheon of action heroes. His tale follows the known formula of one assassin returning to his old life, but what makes John Wick stands out is how vibrant and exciting the movie portrays him. From the nuance, visual and audio, everything looks like enhanced virtual reality or a very polished video game. Keanu Reeves struts with every bone breaking moves he makes, and without a doubt delivering his best performance in years.

Keanu Reeves, despite having impressive resume, might not be the most dynamic actor. He doesn't transform himself in every role, like say, Tom Cruise. However, with good direction and material, both are present in this movie, he will perform amazingly. This is one of Reeves' best roles aside from his in Matrix and Speed, he brings the air of confidence along with hidden yet excessive violence. Reeves display a good emotion as the character, and he also moves with certainty like a hitman would. There is expert use of close quarter combat technique with multitude of fire arms and knowledge of martial arts for the foundation of the character. Although it is heavily brimmed with action elements, John Wick is also equipped with a bit of emotional baggage. From ancient time, the loss of loved one is an acceptable motive for incoming rampage.

The movie is exhibited with flair, its use of color is simply impressive. Every set piece is done with meticulous vivid visual. The camera angle makes it as though the world of John Wick is seen in different light, almost in the setting of enhanced modern noir. Each action is choreographed meticulously and it's a paramount aspect to make him believable as a lethal force. One of the best things about the action is how the fast pace can be captured with precision. Oftentimes movie employs shaky camera or highly uncoordinated editing. This movie manages to display action with clear focus and crisp movements, even at more crowded setting it never relents or overload the viewer with too much visual information.

Soundtracks help a lot with solemn tone and faster techno rhythm. It's probably one of the best soundtracks of this year, rivaling Hans Zimmerman's from The Amazing Spider-Man 2. There are not many action movies with this high of production value, it certainly packs enough fiery punch to leave a scorch mark for sequel, I won't be surprised if there's even a video game of it. With no Bond, Hunt or Bourne in sight, this may be the time for John Wick.

And yet this movie is not like others in this genre. Combining the emotion and excellent minimalist backstory of the opening portion, this movie has much more feel to it than some others. This is played largely by just how sorry you feel for Wick the deeper into his past you go.

Great movie with more there than you first see.

Not to long after that, the dog is killed in-front of John Wick, whose sweet ride is then stolen by the son of a mob boss. So the next hour and change is basically Keanu just brutally killing every person that gets in the way of the man hunt for the his dogs killer. This was one of those movie that needs to be seen on the big screen, it has a some of the wildest fights scenes out of any movie I've seen in a long time, a variety of fitting music for the array of scenes and shots. This is by far Keanu Reeves best performances since the Matrix, its been a while since I've seen him put that much emotion into acting in some of the scenes in flick. Altogether this is a sweet film of nonstop action from beginning to end and is definitely worth seeing in theaters, at least for the first time. Expand

Yes, it’s film noir. Yes, the fight scenes are neatly choreographed, which makes them interesting for the first 15 or 20 minutes. Yes, the concept of a hotel "safe zone" for hit men is unique. But it’s just one continuous fight scene after another. After a while you begin to realize that what you’re watching is a really video game that’s been turned into a movie, complete with video game soundtrack, and a couple of cool classic muscle cars. It's basically grand theft auto Russian style. Everyone in the movie is a Russian gangster and after awhile the accents get annoying. Also, the basic plot is not new. It more or less follows the plot of the 1999 Mel Gibson movie Payback. Expand

The worst problem was the intrusiveness of the “musical” score, which I think would have worked great as background to the action, but was either deliberately too loud in the print or the theater jacked up the sound out of incompetence. Other than that I enjoyed all the “character actors” in supporting roles, and Keanu Reeves was (I guess) as good as he could be in the lead role. He did have presence and was fun to watch. As for the rest, there was not much plot and few surprises, a bit too many “head shots” to the point where they got boring (!). Other than a nice gray tone and some swanky sets, this movie was surprisingly dull for an “action” film. I can see why it didn’t make #1 at the box office this week. Expand

The technical highlights for me would be the long-take fight scenes and gunplay. Keanu brings his Matrix-esque physicality back, he is very believable as an all-business professional in a questionable field that loves his craft, reluctantly as he is to pick it up again :)

John Wick is very stylishly cinematographed, very capably choreographed, and very well casted, from the lead (Keanu Reeves) to the villains (particularly Michael Nyqvist, Alfie Allen, and the dedicated Dean Winters, definitely involved in mayhem.). Overall, I'd rate this one of the tip-top notch action films for 2014 so far and one of the best of the last few years. Comparing it to the star's prior work, John Wick is far superior to 47 Ronin (they are in a similar genre, if different settings). I hope Keanau continues to explore the physical side of his range, as he is has a real talent at working in this space. He had a professional, balletic side to his gunplay in this film (enhanced by the cinematography) that I would love to see more of.

Also - I don't know for sure, but was there a "Commando" reference in there somewhere, with all of the "John" dialogue? :). This is a solid "A" effort for action fans, in my opinion.

After you see John Wick, you'll be saying to yourself, "Yeah, NO SH*T!" to this movie's tagline. Why? The short answer is this: Keanu Reeves, and the movie as a whole, kick some serious ass in this exciting, visceral, entertaining revenge flick. I feel I need to talk about this portion of the movie first; the elephant in the room: the way the action is shot and framed is graceful in the best violent way possible. The action moves along at a quick pace, which compliments it even more, and mixes in just the right amount of bloody brutality. Plus, for Keanu Reeves to be doing it, it's even MORE FUN to watch. But he doesn't just shoot his way through just to get his paycheck. He is great as John Wick, and his very best parts here are when he gives speeches about what drove him to do all this. In terms of plot, there isn't exactly a big amount of imagination, but other good elements make up for that. The main plot is this: John Wick's wife dies and for him to keep living his life with someone, his wife's dying gift to him is a cute lil' pup. However, Russian criminals come and kill his dog, then steal his Mustang. And that is a helluva misstep made by the Russians. John Wick then goes on for revenge. See? Not a whole lotta imagination or complexity, but what made up for it is the world-building that the film does. John Wick is a character that can definitely be expanded on and probably will. The "Continental" in the film is a criminal's hotel where they do their work and enjoyment. This can and probably will be expanded on, too. Let's talk about characters. The main villain here is Viggo Tarasov played by Michael Nyqvist, and I thought he played his role just as good as Keanu Reeves. I personally like villains that are likeable just as much as ones that aren't at all, and his character melds that together seemingly perfectly. Willam Dafoe and Adrianne Palicki were pretty good. All the others were just good. John Wick is a damn good example of why I love action movies, and is a fun-and-good-ass time. Expand

The director does a nice job of establishing the legend of John Wick and just how important he is. And the world of the hitman including all of the ancillary services such as the cleaning services the the hitman hotel and the gold coin currency all lend the film a degree of authenticity that seems to be lacking in other big budget films this year.
