Based on the 1974 novel of the same name and notorious for it’s troubled production history, the movie remains as effective as ever due to it’s adherence to the philosophy that “it’s what you don’t see that scares you”.

Spielberg’s minimalistic Hitchockian approach (mostly born out of necessity due to the fact that the mechanical shark barely worked), John Williams iconic score and the fantastic cast are key ingredients in elevating the campy B-movie premise into one of the most iconic movies ever made.

Spielberg truly knows how to create suspenseful moments and really gives you a chilling feeling. The writing is superb, the acting top notch, a great cast of likable characters to root for and an engaging plot with plenty of suspenseful moments. Honestly what really makes the film however is the original score by John Williams which is just phenomenal. The suspenseful and nerve racking feelings you get while watching and the triumph you feel along with the characters in the end is unbeatable by any film. The run-time is a bit long but other than that the film is a true classic. Expand

The visceral fear engendered from the shark sequences was almost universal and just created a whole generation of aquaphobics. Not only that but it also created a new subgenre in the industry that was later called sharksploitation movies. Roy Scheider and Robert Shaw have a perfect chemistry and understanding of how to merge themselves deeply into characters. This is in my opinion the ultimate horror adventure movie ever. This is really difficult to express my feeling about Jaws. Just watch it and get your own thoughts is probably the best thing to do. Expand

A very good, and evidently a very influential, film from 1975.

That release year doesn't even sound correct, the film holds up extremely well in that regard - I knew already, but if I didn't and I had guessed the year I wouldn't have said anything earlier than 1990. This alone raises the film up ½* for me - it's impressively made.

I don't, personally, think the story is as perfect as the aforementioned. Don't get me wrong it's all entertaining, but I feel it peaks with the shark terrorising the town as a whole - when it's down to just the trio, I didn't enjoy it quite as much. Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss do give notable performances, though.

Going back to my initial point, the effects for the shark are incredible. I kinda wanted to simply see more of just the shark, even if we do get more of the great white towards the conclusion. Heck, the film from the shark's prospective would've been 5*. Lastly, that John Williams score is sensational - I think every film fan, whether they've seen it or not, knows that famous theme.

Almost 47 years after its release, I've finally seen 'Jaws'. I don't honestly think the story/the characters itself are anything out of this world, but there's so much to admire and praise from a technical aspect. A marvel, really.

Based on the 1974 best-selling novel by Peter Benchley, Jaws is highly regarded as the first blockbuster summer movie and it does a great job in building up suspense towards the shark's first appearance. This is also the film that made Steven Spielberg famous, who does a great job building up the tension and making the shark's presence ominous. The practical effects do a fantastic job in bringing the shark to life and making it realistic. The score by John Williams is phenomenal and add to the film's suspenseful nature. The cast do a great job in their roles, especially Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw. Still remains one of the greatest horror movies ever made and will always be regarded as a classic. It has become a little dated, has been copied to a great extent since its release, and has become some quotable it has practically spoiled the film for first time viewers. Yet, it is still great. This is truly a testament to the film's quality and its ability to entertain to this day. A film that really ushered in the era of blockbusters, Jaws is still near the very top when considering the quality of summer blockbuster fare. The acting is solid, the story is engrossing, and the film never ceases to thrill and create scares thanks to a phenomenal score from John Williams and great direction from Steven Spielberg. Jaws is a classic, through and through. It may be a bit dated now, but its entertainment value shows no wear and tear at all. Expand

Jaws (1975) was directed by Steven Spielberg and it based on the novel
written by Peter Benchley of the same name. It's and old blockbuster
and still one of the most famous movies ever released. It's a thriller
set on Amity Island, which is a fictional summer resort island in New
England.

The story is about a great white sharks who terrorizes people on the
4th of July on Amity Island. Three victims get eaten before someone
takes the situation in their hands. Chief Brody (Roy Scheider) the
sheriff of the island, Quint (Robert Shaw) an army veteran with an
astonishing shark killing career, and Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) an
oceanographer with great knowledge on sharks form a crew and head with
a ship to hunt the beast down. It gets more complicated than what they
thought it would be and face many difficulties during their hunt.

The well known Jaws soundtrack when the shark approaches the victim is
one of the golden attributes of the movie, and the thing that probably
even the new generations well know. But other than that little detail,
the whole movie is just brilliant. The actors really give us a
heartwarming feeling while on the boat, they express their passion for
their jobs really well, and they really look like they are putting an
effort into catching the great white.

Being a 20th century movie, i was thrilled every time the shark got to
show itself on the camera, which is something hard to accomplish with
the technology they had at the time. I think that if the movie would
have come out at the present time it would have the same success as it
had back in they day, being a masterpiece in all aspects.

I would recommend the movie to all the movie-lovers that wish to see
the „old-timers" and that don't mind seeing the screen in a retro way.
Definitely still the best shark movie out there.

Today, I first time saw this movie and I am not as amazed as people say this movie makes you. I am not saying that film isn't good. It is great but not a masterpiece.

The first hour is not interesting and nothing much happens. The movie actually isn't that interesting until you finally see the monster. The actors did their jobs very well, but the movie lacked action. Now, some people will say that this amount of action was enough but I don't think so.

Spielberg's direction is great. Overall "Jaws" is not a classic or masterpiece, it's just a pure and simple entertainment with the ending we wanted to see.

I'm not particularly sure if this film should be top, because I sooner or later realised that it wasn't that scary. This is probably the fact that I'm getting much older now, but films like these are supposed to scare people and to me it just felt a little childish. I did love the effect of suspense because we didn't get to properly see the shark, but I don't think it affected me in the way it did with other people. I think it also skipped a chunk too, we saw how it hunted then it speedily flipped over to becoming the hunted. For all ages, but mostly perhaps for the younger ones especially. Expand

Spielberg's direction is excellent and shows the immense talent he would later put to use in iconic blockbuster and genre opuses that would define a new generation of filmmaking. But he is let down, and the skilled cast (Roy Scheider and Robert Shaw in particular) are let down by a poorly paced, unnecessarily protracted, repetitive story which is extended not to the effect of building suspense but dismantling it and diluting all that its effective about the film - its directing, its acting, its photography, its visual style, its score. There is promise and there are parts of the film which are great, which made me sit up and take notice. The final quarter of the film is bloodcurdling and unforgettable. There is no denying the lasting cultural impact of "Jaws". It's a film beloved by many. But not by me, as much as I wanted to embrace it. It felt like a chore to watch in the end. Expand

This film deals with a single theme: the shark attacks on humans. Directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Peter Benchley and Carl Gottlieb, it has Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss in the lead roles.

Regarded by many as Spielberg's consecration film (I don't quite agree, I think E.T. was most notable at this point), this thriller has become one of the most popular films of the seventies, a real milestone of cinema. Honor is made to it's director, who knew how to work the central theme and skilfully use special effects he had at his disposal, even if we think also in the failure he was trying to use that unfortunate mechanical shark. In fact, it was better that way because we have more fear of what we don't see. The actors went well with his role, particularly Shaw. The script was innovative for it's time, being the first to address shark attacks. The sound effects are excellent and John Williams created one of the most impressive soundtracks of all the history of cinema. It's impossible not to feel the heart beating faster when he heard that song that, unsurprisingly, has become a classic. This film won three Oscars (Best Sound, Best Soundtrack and Best Editing) and the Golden Globe for Best Soundtrack.

It's not a mere coincidence that Spielberg is one of the few directors who won two Oscars. He is meticulous, inventive, perfectionist and genial. Although this film does not understand why sharks attack people (usually confusing them with seals and other animals in their food chain) and have caused a real stigma against them that still makes them deeply misunderstood, it was able to maintain it's popularity and continues today to be the target of admiration of the public.

The first time I watched this movie was when I was still a child by that time I really enjoyed it. Although, I never considered it -not even then- as a horror movie but more as an action, thriller/adventure movie. Lately, I saw Jaws rated as one of the top 10 horror movies. I got confused for I didn't remember it as that good; thus,I decided to rent it to see if I discovered something new. Quite honestly, I ended up disappointed because this time I watched it from a much more mature, less sensationalistic, and more critical perspective. The result? I found it utterly boring! There were very few good moments and the actors' performances were ok, but they were never great. In fact, Jaws was fatalistic, totally unrealistic, and very slow . The first 30 minutes were truly tedious. There was not a story, just a shark moving around, and killing people out of nothing. Oh...! this too! Was the mayor so stupid to believe that hiding the presence of the shark from the press and public would not affect tourism? Honestly? How ridiculously silly is that??? Even the greediest businessman would have actually done the opposite, for ignoring the danger would have meant his ruin and the ruin of the whole town if someone else got killed!!! But of course such idiotic behaviour can be seen only in bad movies, and we should not forget that Jaws was based in that nonsensical plot.

Furthermore, the shark wasn't really horrifying or threatening but it looked pretty fake. Don't misunderstand me...that wouldn't matter much to me if the plot was logical and attractive -but it wasn't- or if the characters were interesting and well developed- but that was not the case either. Sadly, I never felt particularly connected to any of those characters...I never cared about their fate, because there was no depth there; they were almost caricatures of real people!. So, yeah, JAWS is a classic, and perhaps for many, it was a great movie. Personally, I believe its popularity is due to the fact that it was the first big 'horror' blockbuster; however, there are lots of thrillers/horror movies even older than this one that show much better plots, characters, photography, and are also much more original and interesting than this film (e.g The Birds). Perhaps many of the reasons why people still find it so 'great' is because of the romanticism associated with the idea of the 'classic movies'. We tend to idealize them. Jaws is indeed a classic; nevertheless, if you think JAWS is the BEST movie ever, then you need to watch more films or pick better ones!..and if you think real sharks behave like the one in JAWS, come to Australia and talk to us, see them yourself and talk to those who know (i.e Marine biologists). Sharks are certainly dangerous, but they are not JAWS! Overall, Jaws, is mere fantasy...and if the movie was meant to be just that, then it wouldn't be as bad, but it was meant to be a thriller (or horror!); that is precisely why it is so disappointing and so poor! Jaws...an entertaining film? Perhaps... Good? NEVER!...

Would I watch it again? No, I will not.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Jaws is a kids film. Its is a overrated not scary laugh fest. To start a shark threatens the civilians of ammity island. Thats about as deep as the film ever gets in the story. The main character is a simple minded boring and scared man who spends too much time worrying about a shark that should not really be so close to the beach. Ellen Brody is such a bad actress and overall should not be in the film. She has no purpose other than to annoy the hell out of the audience. I swear the kids are better at acting than she is. The plot is simpler than buttered toast in a picture frame on the cover of Portal 2. Its hardly worth building any reason whether any of the characters will survive because I just don't care about any of them. About two thirds of way through the film I was on the edge of my seat debating whether the stupid shark would survive. Overall Jaws is a simple and boring kids film. Expand

Filed: Jaws, the worst movie of all time, Spielberg's worst, what a waste of time.

Disturbing and stupid, it is one of those terrible horror films that just don't make the cut, and have a certain cliche and flaw along the way.

Steven Spielberg should definitely reconsider his career. This movie was an utter bore and they definitely should have put more effort into the shark looking realistic. This movie dissapointed in ways that I have never felt before.

The film starts well but the plot in the second part of the film loses its suspense and becomes very repetitive. The scenes in boat feel endless . Yes it is iconic but overall story is rather disappointing
