This film is a love story that puts on display a stunning tour de force performance by the two female leads. Their interplay is more than worth the price of admission alone, and the supporting cast rings just as true. Their tale of love & redemption is familiar, but never done better, & without any cliches or film noir tricks to dress it up. I have never seen a film depicting the enduring love of a family member for a sibling as well as this bittersweet tale. The masterful craftsmanship of everyone involved is blessedly on display in ample abundance. Moving, heartfelt, inspirational & profound with scenes that will stay with you for a long time. Go ahead, treat yourself to a viewing (or several). Expand

Scott Thomas' performance is one that few, if any, Hollywood actresses could have delivered. It is thing of beauty from first to last, abetted by a director with a novelist's touch. An actress who can perform in both English and French, Thomas uses silence, subtle facial movements, and her entire body to document a mother's return to life after the death of her child. Expand

Magnificent central performances and wonderfully composed imagery ensure that this mystery-tinged tragi-drama is genuinely moving. My top film of 2008.

Sensitively acted, particularly by Kristin Scott Thomas. Very well written, evenly paced and the characters a so richly developed. Always interesting. Nicely done.

She does a terrific job as her character evolves over the course of the movie. Pain and suffering she displays without saying a word, and yet she demonstrates an unfiltered directness when she does speak. Although she is center stage, the rest of the cast is excellent as well. The plot may have some weaknesses, but they are easy to overlook in this powerful film. Expand

The film is all about KST's character's awakening after walling herself off for a couple decades. It's about life unfolding slowly around her as she begins to live. It's about the forbearance of family. The inability to forgive and understand. The callousness of narcissists. About life in general as we live it, with an extraordinary catalytic event at the center of the script. Good stuff, IMO. Enjoyed it. Expand

Tour-de-force smoldering performance from Miss Scott-Thomas. Excellent support from ELSA Zylberstein. Deeply affecting story.

Brilliantly acted, deeply moving. Admittedly, there's not a big American-movie-style payoff, that moment when, say, Julia Roberts goes into raving hysterics and that vein on her forehead stands out. The beauty of Kristin Scott Brilliantly acted, deeply moving. Admittedly, there's not a big American-movie-style payoff, that moment when, say, Julia Roberts goes into raving hysterics and that vein on her forehead stands out. The beauty of Kristin Scott Thomas's performance is in the way she slowly, gradually emerges from the frozen awfulness of her crime & punishment, and starts to become a feeling person again. The sister's determination to help her is moving, too. Expand

Terrific novelistic movie with a superb central performance and vivid supporting characters. Kristin Scott Thomas elevates the movie above melodrama with her complex, subtle, multi-layered protrayal of a woman who is released from prison Terrific novelistic movie with a superb central performance and vivid supporting characters. Kristin Scott Thomas elevates the movie above melodrama with her complex, subtle, multi-layered protrayal of a woman who is released from prison after 15 years for a seemingly horrible crime. Claudel provides strong direction with an emphasis on the little details that make all the difference in keeping the viewer hooked. Some people may find it a little slow, but I think this is primarily because most American movies seem to have been made for an audience with the attention span of a gnat. If Thomas doesn't receive an Academy Award nomination, there is no justice. Expand

Unlike some of the critics, I didn't feel cheated by the end of the movie. I'm not sure what kind of ending would have satisfied them. Anyway, it was a very good movie - I didn't get bored at all watching it, which is rare.

HeartBreaking Kristen Scott Thomas was great and gave the greatest performance by an actress in 2008
Elsa Zylberstein was a very good supporting player what a joy to watch them both interact on screen
