I'll preface this review by saying that I rarely see movies in theaters more than once. I am very much a "buy it and watch it until the DVD wears out" kind of guy. I've seen IT in theaters THREE TIMES. It's that good.

There are so many amazing things to talk about in this movie. The script is incredible. Stephen King is arguably one of the greatest writers alive and this adaptation absolutely does justice to his novel (and the Tim Curry TV adaptation). The film looks really stunningly beautiful from a cinematography standpoint, and you can tell they really put a lot of focus on nailing the time period of 1989.

The acting is SUPERB. The kids are all phenomenal. It's easy to point out Finn Wolfhard (especially with his Stranger Things fame) as a standout performance but MAN does the rest of the cast give him a run for his money. Sophia Lillis does an amazing job with a really difficult part, and you can't help but empathize with her and cheer her on. Jaeden Lieberher is also fantastic, and his personal journey will draw you in. You end up caring so much about these kids and what happens to them, and you are with them every step of the way. Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise is magnificent, and definitely deserves the praise he has been receiving.

The score is great. I personally loved the soundtrack.

The scares are good too. A lot of atmosphere and nuance tied to the characters, and a few old fashioned jump scares sparingly thrown in.

I loved this movie, and I would easily see it again. Cannot wait for Chapter 2!

Brilliant, scary and (yes!) over-the-top as IT... should be. The children are peerless performers, which makes it all the more enjoyable. One would not want it to end.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film doesn't work because it doesn't add up to anything. It's another in a long line of recent "franchise-y" films that are more about their existence than about anything resembling a coherent story or theme. This film, taken on its own terms, is about a boogeyman who's mostly a clown and a group of kids who find his house to bludgeon him to death. That's it, and even that's pushing it.

Yes, Pennywise says that famous catchphrase about floating, and even better the movie interprets it literally, as if the quote exists outside a reality tied to story, character, or theme - in this film, kids actually float down in his sewer. Ohhh creepy, that's what it means.

The whole thing is just a serious of intermingled "scare" scenes, one for each kid, wherein they are given the barest bones of character to make it work. Bill stutters, but only like once or twice and it never matters at all. Richie is a smartass, but he dresses cool and hip and is woke so modern audiences love him - his character doesn't grate at all making you wonder why he's such a "loser". Ben is fat, but in a fun superficial way and he's clearly not bothered by it. Mike's character might as well not exist at all (his entire raison d'etre is to have access to cattle guns). Eddie has his inhaler and uses it all of like once - he's more of a pill junkie. He seems rather charming and smart, and his mother is a bloated caricature that does nothing for his character either. Stan is a cipher.

At least Beverly has a some development, but it's driven home in such a broadly obvious over-the-top way that again, it feels like a comment on people's prior conception of her character and not as a real character herself in this story. Her dad is a one-dimensional sexual predator, and her ability to overcome him and in turn Pennywise, rewards her with a damsel in distress storyline that ends in a literal kiss from Prince Charming to wake her - there doesn't seem to be any irony here either.

The sequel to this almost can't exist based on how inept the storytelling in this one is - it will pretty much have to be it's own standalone film. I don't like to judge a film based on its source material, it should stand on its own, but this film fails miserably in both regards so it's a bit of moot point.

The acting is uniformly good however. The kids are well cast, and do their parts well. Bill Skarsgard has potential, though it's wasted by lackluster use of him. There's some kind of shaky-cam run at the camera trick that's bafflingly inept and seems like a cop out by a story that has run out of tricks and doesn't trust an actor to do his job creating tension.

A good example of this is the opening scene - little Georgie has this creepy encounter with Pennywise, and he's charming and owning the screen, when inexplicably the camera cuts to some old woman coming out of her house with a cat, then it cuts back to Pennywise and all the tension has started to dissipate. Then the movie has the "cajones" to literally show Georgie's arm getting torn off and Pennywise's mouth full of sharp teeth. Cut to the cat staring down at the street. That old trick - Alien first did it in 79. It's all so explicit way too early in the film and it kills all of the atmosphere and dread that could have permeated this.

Why. was. there. so. little. Silver. Hi. Yoo. Silver. Away. There's a throwaway line lost at the peripherals about the bike but otherwise nada. Why?

A year after his seven-year-old brother Georgie disappears Bill Denbrough and his friends are haunted by a clown known as "Pennywise" who brings their worst nightmares to life.

Based on the well-known Stephen King novel IT is an effective and creepy horror movie full of memorable scenes and anchored by some good performances from the cast. As someone who's read the book I found a lot of the character and story development a little rushed but that's really to be expected when you condense such a long book into a 2 hour movie and I look forward to seeing the second chapter.

The sequences where Pennywise is tormenting each kid with their biggest fears where all very well realized. Speaking of the kids, they where all great. It's also an 80's coming of age movie as well as a horror film, and the 80's feel to the film was another huge plus. All the kids did fantastic jobs and they felt like real kids with real dialogue. The more the film goes on the more you get attached to them and care about them when certain clown peril comes later on. Overall IT was a fun ride in the cinema, especially for me who dislikes most horror films. Bring on Chapter Two! Expand

Due to being the only one in his family who believes Georgie is alive. During his search for Georgie he and his friends start encountering an evil clown named Pennywise (Bill Skarsgard).
As well as having home issues to get through and a horrible bully named Henry Bowers (Nicholas Hamilton) to deal with every day. Being a teenager is hard enough without an shape shifting clown trying to eat you and your friends.
I expected the movie to scar me for life, since the original did. A lot of the movie is quite touching, funny and even fun. Yes, there's some terribly frightening moments but the coming of age sentimental stuff is what I mostly left with. I felt kind of good after the movie rather than losing sleep.
The casting is perfect as is every performance in the movie. Bill Skarsgard is an amazing Pennywise. He's scary as hell, throughout. Probably the best villain performance since Heath Ledger's Joker. What mostly makes the movie fun though is Finn Wolfhard's performance as Richie Tozier, the smart-ass of the Losers Club. He gets all the best lines and is hilarious throughout.
IT is what you get when the director and studio actually care about the source material and want to do it justice. I wish I could say the same for the adaption of Stephen King's Dark Tower, since I read every book. So much more love and thought was obviously put into making this movie good. Which makes IT one of the best Horror and coming of age stories in years. As well as one of the year's best.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I had hopes for this film, I walked out of the theater when the film was halfway finished. This is insulting on many levels. First of all, changing the setting of the film from the 50's to the very late 80's was clearly done to avoid the use of the word **** This alone is the key reason for this entire mess of a film. Pennywise uses the word in the book and I am pretty sure Henry Bowers also calls Mike a **** in a small budget made for tv movie. So instead of a badass looking greaser from the 50's we get Joe Dirt during his teenage years. The boys look really small too, especially Ben, he looks about eight years old. Beverly is ridiculously over-sexualized. We first get introduced to her in some restroom scene where all the girls in the restroom do a mean "prank" on her, they dump trash on her while she is sitting down smoking a cigarette. The whole thing felt silly, I thought I was watching The Parent Trap for a small while, not a rater R film. In the original film we get two girls who pass by Ben and Bev and one says something along the lines of "must suck to be the daughter of the janitor" which clearly offends Bev and Ben is right there with her feeling bad for her. Much more simple and actually effective. None of this film was scary there was nothing mildly creepy here. Just bad CGI and awful actors. When a made for TV movie from the 90s can spank a silver screen film from 2017 you have a problem. Expand

A diabolically unlaughable clown.

When children of all ages begin to disappear mysteriously in the small and the acerbic town of Derry, a clan of little boys, self- recognized under the pseudonym of The Losers' Club, will have to face their biggest and most remote fears, coming in the form of saffron hair, creepy nose, accused forehead, manipulative eyes and puffy balloons with great amounts of terror. Now, say hello to Pennywise!

After Will Poulter dropped out, Bill Skarsgård was the one who seized with propriety and promptness of the star antagonistic role. His Pennywise is rogue, disturbing and dreadful, however, having to keep solid his function of film adaptation, the character relegates his duty to produce fear in order to have a preference for a more fantastic vision, utopias that seriously impair the impact it must have in the genre. Most of the jump-scares coming from Bob Gray are discredited by the perceptible and even crappy CGI saturation, however, ingenuity and originality in the introduction of each of his appearances is laudable and is one of the most remarkable and spooky facts as far as horror is concerned. It's disappointing to testify that despite his performance full of strength and magnetism, he never managed to reach the levels of glory of the opening sequence.

After the abrupt and disquieting Cary Fukunaga departure, Andy Muschietti is put behind the cameras impregnating his hoarding touch for horror in every frame, marks revealed by impressive Hollywood debut "Mama". It has to be recognized that Muschietti fathoms the ways to conceive and play with the camera in order to set up an in crescendo atmosphere, Besides having a critical eye to conceive beautiful visuals and moving characters, however, the filmmaker loses control of the film at the instant that sets aside the importance and coherence of the story by cheap and ephemeral scares. It's also worth highlighting a homogeneous mixture of genres and original tension sequences, having the ability to revolutionize the ablatives of the audience in the twinkling of an eye. In addition to being the greatest pillar for the movie, he proudly exhibits clear references to today's horror film; to name just one: "The Conjuring" universe, with the use of infinite horror tricks, in fact, one scene and one character resemble some particulars of the third installment of Wan's world. The under-age actors are, far and away, a mass appeal for the plot, their performances are sparkling and touching in the formation of the audience-characters fundamental link. While the infants will always be much more likely to create a true connection, the young septet achieves a relatively high-performing level, however, many of them do it with sadly stereotyped characters as Finn Wolfhard's big- mouthed comic relief (Richie Tozier), Jeremy Ray Taylor's loving and credulous paunchy (Ben Hanscom) and Chosen Jacobs' tormented boy (Mike Hanlon). But the tradition is broken with tremendously novel characters and zero clichés as the tough-minded and human protagonist Jaeden Lieberher (Bill Denbrough), the incredibly Jewish Wyatt Oleff (Stanley Uris) and, of course, Sophia Lillis' subversive and bad-ass role (Beverly Marsh), who is certainly one of the most fascinating female juvenile performances in recent horror.

Written by Chase Palmer, Cary Fukunaga and Gary Dauberman, of course, on Stephen King's legendary pedestal, the story and script are below average in general terms. They choose to focus attention explicitly on the meetings between the members of the club and the Dancing Clown, giving sub-plots of dramatic weight to the supporting characters, in addition, the self-same main character doesn't get a short mention about his mother and father, it merely presents the moral and emotional conflict with his traumas, comrades and his little brother. Andy Muschietti doesn't disappoint, but sadly he doesn't overwhelm us. His remake/revival of Pennywise tale, which will come in only two installment, provides sufficient amount of fidelity in the visual field, however, the movie clearly fails to show its narrative aspects and horror tools, which fall apart, gradually, because of the sudden ton of fantasy that stifles the last act. For habitual audiences, "It" (2017) will endure breaking records thanks to an efficient marketing campaign, global childhood nostalgia, the sincere literary followers, the great doses of suspense and traditional jump-scares, however, for the most draconian and true lovers of the genre and the works of the author, the film doesn't really explore new horizons, besides, suffers from a lack of true horror nuance, slighting it by drama and suspense experiences that leave us a sense of nonconformity and even sadness when we see rolling down the closing credits, due to the abrupt ending of the story that does not have the same horror dimensions as the acts of its evil villain.

"Beep Beep Richie!"

I'm not much of reader when it comes to books. The reason why I couldn't care less when a book gets adapted into film, because not every word is gonna translate well on screen. However, I do remember at a young age watching the 1990 adaptation starring the amazing Tim Curry. While I was never scared, due to it's goofy and sloppy scenes, but Curry performance left a last long impression on me and other people. Re-watching the TV movie didn't help to painfully realize how out dated it is. I wouldn't even call it good, just bad. If a reboot was ever needed, this was it. Now here we are today.

"It" (2017) is a massive improvement and avoids watering it down like other terrible TV movie adaptations. While not on the same level of greatness like "The Shining", "Stand By Me" or "The Green Mile" in terms of quality, but compare to "The Dark Tower" that came out last month, this is pretty strong.

It's not the scariest movie I've seen this year, as the biggest problem is the loud jump scars that feels repetitive and destroys any unsettling moments. Not to say there isn't any, just wish it stayed away from being too mainstream horror.

I like how brutal and violet this got. Especially the beginning which took me off guard of how much it went that far. With no age rating holding it back, kids are acting like kids. Swearing and them physically getting hurt. There was even an attempt rape with one of the kids. As I said, it doesn't hold back on anything.

Bill Skarsgård absolutely kills it as Pennywise. His appearance is both intriguing and terrifying that it can give a grown man nightmares. The smartest thing Skarsgård did was not copy Curry's performance and instead do a different take. Everything from the devilish smile, twisted sense of humor, and the demonic Scooby-Doo voice added lays to the character, giving it life. Who knows, he might be this generations Freddy Krueger. Even in the scene when Pennywise started dancing was funny, but with his head not moving with the rest of the body and eyes locked onto you, it's pretty scary.

All the child actors were pretty great as well. Showing a positive future ahead of them. Finn Wolfhard, Jaeden Lieberher, Sofia Lillis, Jeremy Ray Taylor, and Jack Dylan Grazer are ones to keep your eye on for whatever they do next. The losers club are pretty much The Goonies, but better.

The pacing could've been a lot more sharper, as the 2nd act really did drag. There were a few unintentionally hilarious moments that wasn't meant to be taken that way.

Overall rating: You'll float too.

Each kid has his/her own experience with IT, but the experiences were often comical until the scary ass **** clown showed up. The clown is quite terrifying, but what I found surprisingly awesome was the strangely psychotic, life threatening yet comedic relationship IT has with the kids. He has this dynamic personality that's really interesting. Sure, he's insane and sadistic, but he values his life just like the kids value their's. So it's like a game of cat and mouse between them. So expect the second part is about adult characters. In the advertising company was not informed about this separation, but it went the film only benefit. Not really it would accommodate multi-page brick of a King in one movie. To divide the movie into two parts was the right decision. As a consequence, we have a very extensive adaptation (though, of course, some scenes were not shown, yet the timing is not made of rubber; however, the film adaptation turned out detailed).

The movie "It" tells the story about friends "team losers", which is terrorizing clown Pennywise and they try to fight him. The film immerses himself in its atmosphere. You empathize with the guys, feel the atmosphere of the ' 80s. The children played very well, believe that they are really friends, and they behave as children should behave. Although, not all friends are well disclosed (for example, Michael and Stanley). Clown Pennywise gorgeous! He looks like a clown, but a very scary clown looking one with his eye on the viewer — it's creepy. Him interesting to watch, don't know when he'll stop acting like a clown, and starts to show its dark nature. I can't say that the film is scary. He keeps the tension. In the film there is no screamer, he's intimidating visually. The clown and other children's fears that Pennyways become a reality, look creepy, and I really worry for the children when they pursue these horrible, vile creatures. I really want to praise the Director and cinematographer. Scary moments filmed original. But the main thing in this movie not even horror moments, but the story itself. Even if you've seen the original film and read the book by Stephen King, it is still awake to watch. It can be said, domestic history, but the domestic story, which is imbued with mysticism and horror. This whole Stephen King — he makes terrible appliances. And it's perfectly conveyed by the Director. And yet he managed to make the film much scarier than the book. We would like to thank the visuals, fine acting work by Bill Skarsgård and makeup. Don't go to the movie to laugh (as in typical horror). No, this is a story that has elements of horror. Soak up the atmosphere, characters and horror moments that will make you shrink in the chair (especially when the clown will rush straight at the viewer). Without a doubt this is one of the best adaptations of Stephen King. Waiting for the second part.

I have yet to read the book, though I do plan on it so I can’t give a comparison on which is better or how accurate it is. Nonetheless, “IT” is its own movie. If you enjoy movies where it’s tense throughout most of the movie with something going on 24/7, this movie is for you. After a tragic event occurs, a team of friends stop at nothing to uncover what is haunting their town and making kids go missing. The movie is skillful at developing the main characters, and is remarkable in being unpredictable as to the events that occur. If dealing with Pennywise the Dancing Clown isn’t already enough, the film incorporates bullies and atrocious parents to exacerbate the ghostbusting children’s problem. “IT” is a movie worth seeing. There were only two things to point out in negative fashion towards the movie, one being rather nitpicky. During the library scene, a red balloon is seen eerily passing behind a pair of chairs with slotted backs. The string to the balloon seemingly hangs low enough to be able to be seen passing behind the chairs, but I don’t believe it was there (in fairness, it could’ve been and I may have not seen it). That point however, belongs more in a “CinemaSins” video rather than a review, but I figured I would include it anyway. The main negative point I have towards the film would be the banal horror movie tactic of using a presence or being to appear very quickly on screen to lure a character off into a separate area. This felt stale after being used several times throughout the movie, especially after the characters made it their duty to never leave one another, yet they are so easily drawn away. I realize they’re children but in that situation, I don’t think it matters.

Pennywise’s appearance is iconic, and frightening. Whilst walking out of the movie theater all that strikes me as memorable, more so than his already memorable appearance would be the sinister glow in his eyes. I feel a sense of unease, as if his eyes are the true essence of evil intentions. Pennywise’s tone is monumentally caustic. He enjoys making you feel fear, and is sarcastic and unserious with whatever you have to say. Having said all of that, without a doubt my favorite thing about Pennywise, the whole film rather; would be the truly inhuman movement he performs. I cannot give a polished description on how it looks, but it is unlike anything I’ve seen before.

Just loud and obnoxious "scary" scenes without any tension. The kid scenes are decent, but the whole movie is just a bit tiring.
There was a good movie in there, but the execution is quite bad.
Pennywise looks cool. Mwehh..

It emphasizes a really dark tone unlike the original 90s adaptation. This works really well, as it adds more tension and makes the characters fears seem more evident throughout the movie. But the best thing about the movie are the child actors. They all give realistic and likeable performances, plus they all have really great chemistry together. The way each character is introduced is great, as they all get an even amount of screen time so we can learn about them and their specific fears. Pennywise has a memorable performance, as it is both subtle and creepy at the same time. IT is one of the best horror films out there, but is also just a well made film altogether. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Stephen King's novel as never seen before... As a fan of Stephen King's novel "IT" I must say that i was extremely impressed by the movie. Firstly, the WHOLE cast and creative team behind the movie were perfectly chosen. Bill Skarsgard nails the role of Pennywise in way that you kind of sympathize the character. I was never expecting to like a child eater! All of the Losers Club have done an amazing job on maintaining their character in the correct way! Unlike all the other horror movies in the industry, IT delivers a humorous factor to the audience that breaks the horror part of the movie. In result, it really makes the movie more enjoyable. It also has a very sensitive factor. The fact that Bill is dedicated to find his brother Georgie because he thinks that he is the one to be blamed for his death is amazingly well put in the movie.

There are still some changes from the book, but lets not forget that a book to a movie adaption is not always the same. All in all, Andy has done an amazing job on this movie and everyone else from cast to crew! Good job! You'll float too!

Overall an improvement on the original, balances the horror with humour very well. I thought Finn Wolfhard was amazing, a highlight of the film for me. Only downside for me was the clown, he wasn't as creepy as Tim Curry in the original.

But today I was finally able to see it, the longed for and well received adaptation of one of my favorite novels of Stephen King and of all my life without a doubt.

Now is the time to analyze it and ask if all the fuss was worth it.

This new adaptation that for me is not a remake, without a doubt takes the source material more seriously and it gives more fidelity to the final product, that is a plus, although we must admit that in the end that is irrelevant for those who have not read the book.

The film looks good, the production work is remarkable, the atmosphere and ambient feels totally right, the music, while it's not remarkable is right in all the moments.
In general the whole design works well, however the city does not have the weight of evil that abounded in the novel and although the film mentions it, the truth is that they are very poor mentions.

Then we move on to one of the most important aspects of the film; The cast of children, I admit that the chemistry between the seven is genuine, otherwise I think it would have seriously affected the film, but there is something I disliked and it was that the script makes Bill and Beverly the most relevant characters of the seven, all of them have their moment to shine and they all have their scene being attacked by It except for Richie, however as I said, the film puts all the weight of the protagonism in the two of them.

Also there is another thing that bothers me and I really do not usually mention something about this kind of thing but I don't understand the need to change Mike's story and make him a character that only adds himself to the mix up to the end, he was the one who investigated Derry's history, something that Ben does here and I do not understand it, why did they excluded him that way? they deliberately took away a very important plot weight from the only important character of color in this novel and that is quite upsetting.

There was a lot of mentions about Finn Wolfhard stealing the whole movie but I don't see it that way, many times he is just the comic punchline and almost every time he feels forced, I don't deny that the kid fully adopts the character, but the rhythm and the timing of the narrative does not help him a lot of the times.
I have my objections but I admit that they make the movie work.

The other important element is obviously Pennywise, and it was a fact that Bill Skarsgård had a mountain to climb because regardless of the opinions that you may have about the miniseries, Tim Curry's Pennywise is iconic, but you have to give credit to Skarsgård, he really did his own and gave a proper interpretation to the character, he adds it a different and quite obscure identity in moments, the scene in which he murders Georgie proves it, the way he stares at him in silence with his gaze lost is quite strange and unnerving to say the least. I really liked his design and clothing, faithful to the book.
Will he become so iconic? I doubt it, but he has all my respect because he really did a great work.

In general terms, It: Chapter One is a solid adaptation, they took the material with seriousness and Andy Muschietti delivers a movie with a good direction, better than what we saw in Mama, although the film has several mistakes, especially with the rhythm and that its lenght that is somewhat excessive, the film is entertaining, with good scares, a respectable adaptation, one of King's best, totally.
It is not the masterpiece of horror that many proclaim, but it is definitely a movie that deserves your time and attention.

The kids yammer on at 30 words a second sometimes. Clarity goes a long way.

The film makers traded in most of the psychological aspects for cheap jump scares (which weren't very scary). Some of the changes were good, but its too much of a generic scare flick to be great.

I am disappointed though with the fact that Pennywise really didn't have much dialogue and was kind of cheapened to jump scares through out the movie. And the scares were very predictable, You could see it a mile away so it was hard to actually be scared. The lack of scares doesn't stop it from being a good and faithful adaptation of the book and I would still very highly recommend it. I can't wait for chapter 2 to come out.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There was so much wrong with this movie. The chief complaint I have is the plot pacing. This film felt like a rush job, and a decent editor good have salvaged it. Everything happens too fast - whereas the original IT Part 1 explores the children's story through flashbacks where you have to wait long periods of time between Pennywise scenes (always a sense of unease and dread, so you can identify with how the kids feel), the new movie takes you from one Pennywise scare scene to the next almost within minutes of each other. When one kid sees Pennywise, the next kid sees him, and the next down the line, with no time to breathe or be terrified in between. After being intoxicated with Pennywise jump scares oversaturated by CGI and incessant music/Sound FX that guide your feelings rather than enhance them, we're stuck with drawn out scenes between the kids, most of whom are bad actors (save for Richie and Bev), and have no on-screen chemistry. There was little-to-no exposition on Henry, save for a quick scene with his father. The relationships between the children and their parents came off as boilerplate, and between each other, cliched and over-the-top. This was a hackneyed director's imitation of what he thinks childhood interaction in Stand By Me and Stranger Things looks like, minus the chemistry, plus some Pennywise and gore-porn scenes. That's another problem: this film does too much show and tell, no subtlety whatsoever. Georgie isn't just victimized by Pennywise - you have to watch him get his arm ripped off as he writhes and screams in a puddle, before a cheesy CGI hand reaches out to pull him into the sewer. Bev doesn't just see blood pour out of her sink, the whole bathroom has to rain blood. We can't just figure out on our own that only the kids can see the blood, there has to be an entire scene where it's explained. The children don't just defeat Pennywise with a timely sling shot, they give him a gang-style beatdown like he's being initiated into the Crips.

Was there some good? Yes. I thought Skarsgard's Pennywise was interesting and a different type of performance than Tim Curry gave, not just a cheap impression. I just wish we got to see more of his acting instead of CGI and SFX doing his job for him 90% of the time. I loved the design of Pennywise's lair, with the pile of childhood items and floating kids. Hated the plotholes involving the dead lights - why is it that Bev can stare in the dead lights and be salvageable, but Stan can't? (presuming the rest of the plot follows along with the book) Because Ben loves her? If Ben kisses another floating kid, can he save them too? Come on. And in what world are heavy metal fans the bad guys, and New Kids fans are good guys? Who among us hasn't wanted to stab a boy band fan at one time? Can you blame Eddie for wanting to kill Ben? COME ON!

The direction was pedestrian, the kids (with a few exceptions) were not interesting, the set design was okay (but if you’ve seen one small town, you’ve seen them all, at least if you go by this picture), and even the old haunted house looked cliché (likewise, every “scary” hole in the ground – and there were dozens of those). This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great film, tame ending, but that's how it has to be as it sets up chapter 2.

PROs:

-Excellent 80s nostalgia
-Actual scares. This surprised me the most. Modern US-made horror films are usually f u c k i n g lame and pathetic. This one had many moments of genuine scares
-Great acting by the kids, especially the lead female
-A good, soft, warm look to the film, that become suitably greasy whenever Pennywise appeared
-Pennywise. The trailers made him look as scary as a fart, but in the film he was a genuine threat. Clowns man, clowns

CONs:

-The fact that 50% of the film is DLC we'll only see next year
-The MUSIC goes LIKE THIS RIGHT BEFORE AND DURING A SCARE - come on... IT would have been 1000 times better without jump scares or jump scare music
-The adults were all generic baddies. I mean, it's the kids show, so whatevs to this one

That's it, for now it's my favourite horror of 2017. Surprisingly good, and I usually hate everything.

Not because it was scary, but because it had what a lot of newer horror films seem to lack… substance **Slight Spoilers** Some of the criticism I have read of this film was that it was slow, boring, not scary etc. All are valid concerns for someone looking for a standard horror film to do nothing but scare them, but “It” is not your standard horror film. It was not the frights that pulled me in but rather a coming of age story supplemented by a great supporting cast. Though Penny wise the clown was creepy enough, it was the more contemporary villain that came across as more menacing. Each of the main kids had some sort of character flaw or villain they had to overcome, which really added more depth to this compelling tale. For me there is only one other Stephen King adaptation ranked as high and that is Stanly Kubrick’s version of The Shining. This is a must see for fans of Stephen King or anyone looking for a different sort of horror. Expand

Stunning effects, eerie music and a solid cast. You really believe the Losers club are all real friends, their chemistry was perfect. The tone from the novel has been brought to life in a way that the original never achieved. This film manages to capture the spirit of the book fantastically with realistic, grounded performances from the kids who shine individually in their roles, with every character bringing a unique personality to the film. Bill Skaarsgard delivers an outstanding performance as Pennywise who comes across a very disturbing, unpredictable character. The dialogue from the clown is conveyed very sinisterly, and Bill really captures the alien-like, unhuman aurora of the character, making it seem much less like a guy in a clown suit, but as a demon who preys on kids – which is what it’s supposed to be!

The horror in this film is reliant on creepy imagery and well set up jump scares – which are very justified when they happen as they are built on great tension. The only gripe I have with the horror aspect is that it was done perfectly, but felt a bit random as scenes. I feel like there should have been more development on the horror scenes, making them longer, and actually showing the effects it has on the children.

The main drawing point for my praise for the film is the story of the Losers. Their characters are so well developed on screen and so well performed that it makes the horror even better, as you are rooting for these characters to succeed in defeating this evil entity. The whole idea of growing up and having determination and courage is so well emitted from this film – and it really gives off a Stand By Me vibe. This factor makes you want to see as much screen time of the kids as possible.

Overall, I believe this is a very faithful adaptation of Stephen Kings IT, and is a truly great horror movie that I expect will be loved for years. This film gets from me an 85% 8/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Huge disappointment. I think whoever edited the trailer should've directed the film because it got me super excited thinking this would *actually* be a scary movie. Long story short, this movie is littered with cliches, and I only got one good jump scare out of it. Definitely not the worst horror film I've seen (that trophy goes to the Pyramid), but quite disappointing. Long story long, I was honestly more afraid of the humans than the "demon" in this film. There were some insane bullies, an emotionally abusive dad, a dad who yelled at his kid about his dead brother, a sexually abusive dad, an overprotective mom who slut shamed a child...the list goes on. And when I say 'cliche', I mean a group of 'losers' form a group (amazingly easy for them), face their fears, and defeat the beast through teamwork and believing in themselves. The graphics were fricking awful. I couldn't get into it/believe it all all because it was so bad. That, paired with the totally unoriginal horror tropes (someone walking behind, a hand coming behind a door, doors opening and closing without explanation). With a good film, I won't need to ask "Why" because it'll take over my senses and horrify me. But there was no scare or originality for this film. It's too bad. Expand

No one can adapt the saga Stephen King has written accurately because it is simply too big to be adapted into just two movie, but still 'IT' will surely scare you. I just loved how terrifying Pennywise is. I loved how one of my favorite chapters 'The Apocalyptic Rock Fight' is there in the movie with a kickass score in the bacground, I loved the kids who played the characters, I **** loved the BGM and I loved the comic relief; it was hilarious. What I didn't like was the excess of scares. It's not bad, but whenever I remember conjuring, I think that's the way to make a horror movie, the buildup should be so terrifying that you don't have to put that much closeup shots of the entity. Next, I have had the same problem from Andy Muschietti in Mama as well. I hate the overtly done CGI. Keeping it real is more scary than those cartoonish transitions the CGI monster makes.
Apart from that, I loved it. I just love when they do it in the old school way!
PS, I watched in IMAX and yes, it helps!
****Spoilers****
It was decent. I mean, IT feeds on fear and it was somehow justified. They couldn't have put up the orgy thing in the movie or it would have been banned, but yeah, it was a poetic thing and hard hitting at the same time.

The overall mood of this story is creepy. Most of the rest of the cast is either cruel, mean or sinister, so the sense of menace pervades the film. The creature effects are inventive and effective, but it's never really scary. The kids provide some fun with their innocence and smartass dialogue. Comparisons to the youthful camaraderie in "Stand By Me" (based on a King novella) are obvious, but this is a much darker world. Their performances are compelling and director Andres Muschietti has crafted a convincingly weird adventure. Don't expect any shocks and just enjoy the threatening mood. Expand

There were couple things in this movie that i really liked! and couple things that i didn't. Okay first of all, movie start very strong the Georgie scene from mini-series was iconic and now they did it little bit different although it was more close to the book. This scene also show us that movie is r-rated. There are some gruesome scenes in this movie for a reason which works for me. And new interpretation of Pennywise gives you a good introduce. But i don't know does it top Tim Currys Pennywise ?? Stars of this movie are the kids H*ly S*** they bring comedy and good acting in this movie. I really hope to see some of them soon in another movie. AND now the BIG QUESTION is this movie scary ? well..no ? it´s actually more thriller than horror but that is just mine opinion. They were jumpscares, but mostly horror was subtle, which is not a bad thing! First and the second act was really good but the third act was a disappointment. Pennywise at the end starts to be more like a another Johnny Depp character than a scary killer. I really liked that they gave us some backstory about the clown but kept it hidden too. And movie show us how this thing kidnaps children. Even thou the movie is not a full 10/10 because there are flaws and things what should be fixed.. but for a Re-imagining of a classic. I say give it a shot. Expand

Joining Get Out, Baby Driver, and Wonder Woman, as solid but wildly overhyped films, Andy Muschietti continues to prove that he is a horror director who has no idea how to direct horror films. Excelling when it comes the childhoodJoining Get Out, Baby Driver, and Wonder Woman, as solid but wildly overhyped films, Andy Muschietti continues to prove that he is a horror director who has no idea how to direct horror films. Excelling when it comes the childhood relationships on display and the mystery regarding the town of Derry, Muschietti directs the horror scenes like an amateur and has to rely on jump scares to actually conjure up any scare or any sense of atmosphere. Had the film lacked its heart - the kids - then Stephen King's It would have been a film that could have been tossed on the pile of other disappointing King adaptations. As it stands, it is a film that is far funnier and endearing than scary and, as a horror film from Stephen King, it should manage to be all of three of these things. Unfortunately, Muschietti's failure to conjure up any scares that have a lasting impact leave It as nothing more than above average film that fails to live up to its considerable hype.

What makes the film's scares so dull and uninteresting is two-fold. For one, they are predictable. As the camera pans around a bathroom past Beverly (Sophia Lillis), it is obvious what will be in the corner of the room right behind her. As the kids walk through the Well House, it is obvious where the clown will be and what it will do. As the Jewish kid looks at the painting and the picture is gone, take a wild guess what is now behind him. It is a film that never shocks the audience. There are no chances taken. It is by-the-numbers horror filmmaking, putting Pennywise exactly where he is expected to be and then acting that it is scary anyways just because Pennywise makes some creepy face and sprints at the camera. Rarely does this work and Muschietti would be well served to keep his audience guessing, instead of giving into our every inclination. The best horror films hint at the evil lurking around the corner, but never show it unless the timing and anticipation is just right. For this film, it believes Pennywise to be such a compelling horror figure that it just has to rush him out immediately. Often times in film and in It, the horror is scariest when off-screen. Here, when other kids go missing without their disappearance being shown, the film is laced with a great sense of dread. Unfortunately, all too often, Muschietti gives into temptation and sprinkles Pennywise quite liberally throughout this film. By the end, the result is a clown that does not lurk in the shadows, but out in the open and right behind you every single time.

The other element that holds back It's horror impact is its reliance on jump scares. Going hand-in-hand with its predictability, It relies on jump scares or Pennywise running at the screen as his head violently shakes far too often. Gross-out horror and gore are also relied upon at times with similarly minimal impact. Rather than taking the time to build anticipation and an overwhelming sense of dread, Muschietti instead relies upon cheap tricks to steer this ship. Unfortunately, for horror films, reliance on cheap scares is what often undermines their quality and what can make so many quite disposable and forgettable. Though It has a lot to love and some smart themes, it is not really one that can be described as scary. The closest it gets comes as the kids walk around the Well House looking for Pennywise which carries considerable dread and is loaded with classic horror moments that elicit panicked "don't go in there"'s from the crowd. Unfortunately, Pennywise will always pop up right where he is expected to via a pair of jump scares, rendering the scene one with a great build-up but no actual punch. In essence, It not only lacks any imagination for how to elicit fear, but when it does elicit fear, it does so cheaply and in a fashion that rarely actually scares.

The film's cliche ending further disappoints. After two-plus hours of the kids coming together to fight bullies and urging one another to stick together, they do just that in facing off with Pennywise. Unfortunately, the scene not only lacks any tension, but it lacks any originality. Pulling off his mask to force this supernatural being to realize that he has no power anymore due to the lack of fear in the children's hearts, the film really sells its own villain short in the process of delivering a cliche, kill the bad guy as a group type of ending. By reducing Pennywise to being nothing more than a physical representation of fear, the film winds up undermining all of the ominous historical development it showed and turns the character into a rather pathetic one. Lacking the menace, horrifying unpredictability, and inevitability of the very best horror villains, Pennywise is a character who is easily defeated once controlled. Though smartly including this to bring the film's themes regarding fear and how to not let it consume you, it really makes for a lackluster villain in a film that needed his menace. Bill Skarsgard plays the role well, but the mightily

It is a really good adaption of the book (minus the orgy thing of course). However, what a lot of reviewers seems to misunderstand, is that this isn't just a horror movie.

It's a coming-of-age thriller with supernatural elements. The purpose of the scares isn't to scare you, but to cater to the fears of each individual kid in the losers club.

With that being said, there are some genuinely unnerving scenes in the movie, but it has it's focus on the characters themselves, where the focus should be.

As for Pennywise, it's hard to compare Curry and Skarsgaard, as they depict two wildly different variants of the infamous clown. Curry was the creepy child molester type and Skarsgaard is just plain frightening.

The movie has great cinematography and a good flowline of time, as well as great dialogue and acting. The one thing that may be slightly annoying for some, is that some of the scene to scene scares, doesn't always seem to stick with the kids.

"It" actually feels like a real movie that just happens to be scary, which is how the best horror movies are. The writing, the acting, the thrills, and the cinematography are all very spot on. I'm especially impressed with how well all the child actors performed. As far as scariness goes, it's not necessarily super scary, but almost every scene manages to be thrilling in some way, so overall it's very intense and very fun. I would definitely recommend "It". It's a very satisfying horror movie, a worthy remake, and I'm definitely looking forward to chapter two! Expand

It's not Saw or the Ring or even The Babadook. It's not designed to keep you afraid and disturbed for the entire runtime. This is a monster movie, a nightmarish adventure story. And because of that it's massively enjoyable, fun, tense and yes, sometimes terrifying. The pacing is perfect, the story never once drags, and the acting is aces all the way around. I felt that, at most, one or two moments were a bit indulgent or cliche, but even these blips registered as fun, not distracting or tonally inconsistent. I'm not usually a fan of horror films, but I adored the creepy, shapeshifting hell out of this movie from the script to the lush cinematography of the fictional New England setting. The filmmakers earned every penny of the astoundingly great opening weekend they had, and I hope it continues to charge along into October. Happy Halloween, more than a month early! Expand

It pulls very few punches.By being bold enough to really capture the grotesque violence and child endangerment of the source material, "IT" manages to stand out from the horror pack by having an extra dose of darkness and brutality. It pulls very few punches. Something all too rare and actually very surprising for such a mainstream horror flick. I applaud director Andrés Muschietti for having the integrity to do so. Lord knows he could have toned everything down and still made plenty of money at the box-office simply on the name alone. The actual scares in the film are of the funhouse variety. It's big-thrills, large and flashy, and almost rapid fire. While there's a great little atmosphere to things, it doesn't change the fact that IT simply isn't very frightening. Instead it's more exciting and outright fun to watch Pennywise torment the kids. As a result I was able to deal with the fact that I wasn't exactly quaking in my boots. There's also the fact that the movie has such a great, memorable villain. One portrayed excellently by Bill Skarsgård. If they nail the sequel I have no doubt Pennywise will finally be held to same level of respect as Freddy Kruger, Michael Myers, Leatherface, and Jason Vorhees by becoming one of the iconic horror villain icons in the mind of just about every horror fan, and not just he clued in. Heck, this movie might even be enough to do that on it's own.

The real strength of the movie is in it's characters and story. Both of which are brimming with heart and humor. More so than we usually see from this genre. It's about friendship, facing your fears, and is funnier than most comedies. It's a blood-soaked coming of age tale that's done rather believably (given the premise) in just about every area. There is even a nice amount of fidelity to the source material and the new stuff fits right in.

There is a little something missing from the movie however. Some of the book's core themes didn't make the cut. We never really get to see the effects IT has on the town as a whole. How everybody seems to ignore what's going on, such as the adults turning blind eyes to acts of cruelty that regularly occur between the kids. I also found a little bit of a problem with the movie's depiction of Henry Bowers. We don't get to see his transformation from regular bully to legitimately dangerous psychopath. He's just homicidal from the get go and there's no context as to why he is so aggressive towards Ben Hanscom in the way that he is. Another complaint is that the movie doesn't do much with Mike Hanlon. He's the only member of the Loser's Club who feels left out for the majority of the film.

While not without it's flaws, IT is still very much a triumph. With a stellar cast of genuinely teenage actors (the standouts being Wolfhard and Lillis), strong writing, entertainingly brutal thrills and a great sense of humor, IT is an all around great time at the movies. IT also stands as a satisfying adaptation of a Stephen King work. The most satisfying in quite a long time. IT easily stands amongst the top of the pack in terms of that. As a huge fan of the book I was quite entertained. I had a blast and highly recommend giving it a shot. Even if you haven't read the book, it's still just a really good horror movie in it's own rights.

Since I do recommend seeing it, and there are plenty of good aspects of the movie, I'm going to focus on the few things that I thought really missed the mark.
The movie is obviously supposed to be horror at heart, but the horror elements were often undermined by misplaced comedy. During the more intense moments, where life is literally on the line, no kid in real life is going to be joking around about something stupid in that moment, but in "It," it happens pretty routinely. It really undercuts the believability and breaks immersion when this happens, and makes you wonder what the director was trying to achieve.
The other gripe I have it with the storytelling. Before major events, usually you have some lead-up or foreshadowing so that when a character does something significant, you know why they are doing it. In "It," the characters were often doing some pretty major actions with seemingly little reason to do so. There are also a few parts in the movie that only make sense if you have read the book or have seen the original 1990 movie, making it so that this movie doesn't entirely stand on its own.
Misplaced comedy and shortcutted storytelling aside, this was a pretty entertaining movie. The visual effects and locations were well-done and creepy, and it made me jump in my seat once.
So, go see "It," but expect to see a very "hollywood" release, for better or for worse.

And boy did it bring me back. The child actors put in outstanding performances in a movie where the adults are thankfully absent. This movie is more than just a one trick pony. We have, coming of age, child abuse , a tender romance and a horror rolled into one with a large dollop of sardonic teen humour. Worked well . Usual jump-out of your skin tactics which to some of the jaded are cliched but to me were awesome and a liberal use of vulgar language which was strangely appropriate and satisfying. The clown is terrifying and nightmarish…... And there is a chapter 2 to come..

Of course the movie goes intoI was surprised at just how much I cared about every character here. With their own quirks, plenty of time to see them interact, and fantastic acting by all, I loved every second of them on screen together. Of course the movie goes into some cliched horror movie things (which I won't mention) but overall I was shocked at how well this film blended drama, really funny comedy, and downright scary moments. Two scenes in particular freaked me out and neither were particularly big scare moments. Also, neither actually features a clown, something I'm not really sure I get why people are actually afraid of. The first happens in the background, during a library scene. The second is a painting...that's all I'll say about those.

Also, every character stands out and was memorable. I'd absolutely hang out with any of them if they were real people and definitely related to a few. Besides the guys in the group there was a breakout performance by the female character. Pennywise was also brilliantly portrayed here. Creepy, relentless, and of course, scary. While no actual clown moments were all that nightmare inducing, there's no one that can honestly say they didn't get effected by the dread and force in which he hunted each character. During a house scene every character gets separated and goes through some pretty torturous moments, all while we get to see them act exactly like we would. Which brings me back to the acting/writing. There's no "too smart for their age" kid here...no kid acting like a grown up. All these kids are scared and freaking out on their own and band together at the end when they realize they're all part of a stronger unit. With the combination of a terrifying villain, several strong heroes, great character arcs by all, and a perfect length to let you experience everything and care about everyone, "It" is right up there in my top 5 films so far this year.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I saw this movie today and I walked out astounded (with a pair of sweaty palms, should I add). I was excited to see Finn Wolfhard in another production, as I was very happy with Stranger Things, and I was extremely impressed with his performance, along with all the other child actors in this movie. Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise was amazing, all of his scenes had my eyes (or eye occasionally, as my hand covered the other in horror) glued to the screen, and had me jumping up in surprise and shock when he suddenly darted forward or attacked. The horror was very good, suspense created execellently through the very good score/sound editing, and grisly, gory special effects (the bathroom scene & Eddie's fear scene notable points). The final act/part of the movie was intense, and the ending was good, seeing everything come together in a very satisfying fashion. Even the side characters (Henry Bowers & his cronies) & subplots were amazing, especially Henry's troubled path and character, which then inevitably leads me to say the script was absolutely amazing. The humour was... surprising, shall we say, but it made me laugh when I was supposed to. This, mixed in with all the other points I've given, made for an incredible experience & an amazing, amazing Stephen King adaptation. Expand

It's a solid 9/10 movie. Could've been a 10/10 if it were less funny and a bit darker, but that's just my opinion.

From start to finish, I was shaking and sitting at the edge of my seat. The actors/actresses did a PHENOMINAL job, especially the actor who played Pennywise the Dancing Clown. I enjoyed watching the young children actors/actresses that performed, they were really dug into their roles and pulled them off well. One of the best horror films to come out in years. Every scene Pennywise appeared I had goosebumps. There were some holes in the plot that I didn't seem to understand, but not many. Much better than the original in terms of acting and frightening scenes. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is one of the best horror movies I've seen in recent years. Pennywise is incredibly creepy and scary. What I like most is the trailers and scenes found online did not spoil the movie. The actual movie goes way more into these scenes and makes them longer. What happens to Georgie at the beginning genuinely shocked me. I felt fear from Pennywise and his various other forms. I felt humour for Richie and the rock fight scene. I felt disgust at the molestation elements present. I felt sadness because of Georgie and his brother. This movie is amazing. Go watch it! Expand

As a story, It has three main threads: the first (and most advertised) is the horror aspect; following that is mystery, and then coming of age. Whilst each of these areas are visited in the film, none of them are really given enough time to breathe and can come across as either rushed or half-baked, leading to an incomplete experience. The main draw for audiences for the film would be the horror and mystery aspects, but much of the screen time is dedicated to the coming of age story, which often feels disjointed to the rest of the film. These moments feel a little too light and comedic given the subject matter. I occasionally felt as though each part was written separately and put together at the end, as characters would suffer from extremely traumatic experiences and then not bring them up when they were with their friends the next day. I thought that this may be down to It messing with their memory, but it is never made clear and can feel a little weird. Possibly the strangest example of this is a light hearted cleaning montage of a bathroom which-- the scene before-- had been the stage of one of the most distressing moments in the story.

The horror aspects of the film all felt a little rushed and lacking in tension. Each follows a strict formula: the manifestation of a character's fear appears, there's a close up of said scary thing, then it runs at the character who promptly escapes. The first few times this happened put me on edge a little bit, but by the fourth time, they came across as a weak attempt at dark humour rather than being legitimately scary. No time is really given for tension to build up for the horror, which is absolutely crucial in the same way a good joke needs time to build up to a punchline. I wasn't too sure what to expect coming into the film, but it was sold to me as a friend as being the story of a community slowly being controlled and overwhelmed by a force of pure evil. There was no build up in atmosphere or darkening of the world to show this. The horror moments just happened, ended, and the plot rumbled on. A good contrast to this would be Paranormal Activity, The Shining or Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable, in which the malevolent forces' build up in power is felt everywhere and becomes almost oppressive, building up to a brutal crescendo at the end. There was none of this here: the final raid on It's lair felt like some bored kids trying to pass the time rather than a necessary act to end evil's hold on a small town. The mystery of It's nature is alluded to but never really looked at. One of the kid's does some investigation and unsettling pictures from the past are shown, which worked very well and pulled me in, but this was quickly shelved and didn't really go anywhere. Overall, I feel that two things could have been done to improve the film: the first would be to tell more stories through subtext and the second would be to make it a miniseries in order to free up more hours to dedicate to plot threads. Some better editing and use of subtexts would really free up time that could have been spent exploring the nature of It and to allow horror elements to breathe. Around an hour is spent establishing that each character is a social outcast and that they are being bullied; this could have been shortened to a few minutes with a montage of them being bullied or even just establishing them as a group that already know each other and have them being chased by the bullies in their car. The whole plot with the bullies doesn't really go anywhere either. We see one being possessed but that ends without really building tension or threatening the group past a small power struggle. This may sound overly negative, but it's mainly borne of disappointment rather that disdain. The sense of setting and world-building were top notch, and some of the characterisation worked really well. I don't thing the film has sold me to watch the second chapter when it releases next year, but I have already picked up the novel it was adapted from and I am eager to start reading it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I came into IT having read the book twice and watching (and hating) the original TV mini-series. As a fan of Stephen King’s novel and the disappointment from the mini-series, I was hoping that a cinematic attempt at portraying the beloved Pennywise would definitely work. It is safe to say that not only did they achieve that, but they also made one of the best horror films to be released in the last decade.

It was terrifyingly good. The CGI, while cartoony and rushed at times, looked believable still and I believe that the cartoon-style was intentional to show the psychological effect on the kids, rather than the forms IT takes being literal. Andres Muschietti did an excellent job at directing this film, especially on such a tight budget of $30 million. For context, Deadpool constantly claimed how low its budget was and how many limits it had, and they had a budget of $50 million. With a lower and tighter budget, IT exceeded all expectations and has since broken *many* records.

The flow of the film is a major con for most critics, but I actually liked the switch-up of a coming-of-age story to a horror film in such low space of each other, and I liked it because it kept you on the edge of your seat the entire time, because you’d never know when the horror ended or started. What I absolutely love about this film and Muschietti’s directing is the subtlety.

SPOILER TERRITORY

I can’t believe the amount of subtle horror in this film.
When they were helping Ben in the alleyway, Pennywise’s face was spray painted on the wall for the last few seconds of the scene, and it really brought forward the mood of the film. There were tons more; like the clown moving its head when Richie walked past, the librarian death staring Ben in the library, etc. All of these subtle horrors make the film so much more rewarding if you watch it on multiple occasions. I know I’m going to go watch it a second time and then I might update my review now that I can focus on the film rather than be mesmerized.

The ending was very different to the novel, as in the novel obviously the controversial scene occurs, but they did not include Pennywise turning into its true form, and the Losers’ Club seeing it as a spider. Whether or not I got that mixed up with when they *spoiler alert* come back as adults, I don’t know. I’ll need to reread.

I liked the gore, it really wanted that R rating. Georgie screaming before being dragged into the storm drain was really brutal and shocking. It set the tone from the very beginning and I loved every second of it. For the long runtime of 2 hours 15 minutes, it flew past.
However, because of the constant switch-up between genres the story NEVER has time to breathe. The experience is so intense, and maybe a few scenes where we get to know more of the kids families would let the story have a bit of breath before bringing back Pennywise; speaking of which, that was my ONLY issue with Skarsgard’s Pennywise; he had too much screentime in my opinion, and I feel that made his presence less creepy at times as we knew he was going to be there. His other forms were tremendous, and the inclusion of the Leper was superb, however Pennywise was too common and we were spoilt.

I’d love to rate IT – Chapter One a 9/10 based on all the points I have explained. I cannot wait for Chapter 2 and hope to see where they take the story.

And by "predecessors," I don't just mean the aforementioned TV special. Indeed, while this film is more frightening, captivating, engaging, and simply well-produced than the 90's cult classic, it also helps streamline, normalize, and enhance the source material itself, in all its idiosyncratic glory. This is an incredibly well-realized piece of horror filmmaking with terrific world-building and magnificent performances all over (particularly from those of the film's "Losers Club"). And while I find it may deviate a bit too much from its own remarkably well-established tone here and there, I'd still say it's nothing less than an achievement overall. Expand

It changes significantly from the book, with several scenes omitted or modified, and although I am saddened by many of my favorite scenes missing, it is understandable that they were cut for time. This movie feels like a Spielberg film given a darker tone, and it did well with the character dynamic. But... "It" is not scary, which is kind of a problem for a movie like this. It didn't have a blatant use of jump scares like in most modern horror and the ones that it has can be surprising, but I found myself more grinning and having fun looking at the decent CGI then filling with dread. I wish the scenes featuring Pennywise took their time to give his character more time to act, as the conversations with him were by far the scariest parts of the film.

But... This film was still a highly enjoyable watch, especially in a crowded theater of people. I would recommend going to it on a busy day. This film succeeded, but in character rather then scares. Whether that is a good thing or a bad thing for you all depends on how you like your movies.

I'd give "IT" a 7/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a review from someone who's never read any of Stephen King's novels, as I've never really been a huge fan of him or his works. I also never got around to checking out the old TV adaptation from the 80s. With that out of the way, I decided to check this out based on the hype and rave reviews surrounding it. And I must say that I'm probably in the minority when I say that I did not care for this film very much at all. I didn't find it very scary at all, with all of the scare attempts coming off as ridiculously over-the-top to me, most of the child actors were all annoying as hell and almost never shut up, and the film felt too much like a Spielberg film, which isn't a compliment. Besides the music style among other things that made it feel like a Spielberg film, there so many times in this film where it felt like a remake of the film 'Super 8' (which Spielberg executive produced, but he had nothing to do with this film btw,) only as more of a horror film instead. Think about it. This film was EXACTLY like Super 8 in so many ways: In both films, kids are the main focus, with school getting out for summer, a girl hanging out with a group of boys, with the hero kid and the fat kid both having a crush on her, an unknown creature or thing killing people or causing people to disappear, the girl having an abusive or alcoholic dad, the girl stands up to the dad, but then gets abducted by the unknown creature/thing, the boys have to go rescue the girl underground/in the sewer, etc. Sounds almost exactly like the movie 'Super 8' doesn't it!? Really the only thing I can think of to say that's positive is that Bill Skarsgard gave a pretty crazy and dedicated performance as Pennywise. Other than that, this was a weakly executed, borderline carbon horror copy of 'Super 8', which was a much superior film with much less annoying child actors as well. When part 2 of this comes out, hopefully the story will be better told and have better acting to go with it. Expand

Humor, creepy factor lacking compared with the original film/s including the IT it is re-imagining. Feels more forced then genuine. Lacks the chemistry, wit and production quality of the original. Poorer attempt at a Stand by Me/ Big Chill that the original mini film series perfected. Cast less cohesive then previous attempts and personalities feel less defined. Humor feels off compared with Currys taunting. Pennywise lacks the cohesive human/monster combo that Tim Curry's Pennywise represented, feels disjointed in comparison and should have been scarier. Effects are a wee bit off at times which distract from any genuine scare attempt.

Film feels like a missed opportunity.

Finn Wolfhard was freaking hilarious. More creepy than scary yet has some frighteningly striking visuals. Sure theres some pacing/editing issues but thats it. People cant rate this movie lower because it wasnt as scary as they thought. Everyone can relate to this movie in someway, sometimes real life can be evil too. This movie is about losing your innocence as a child and having to face your fears to become an adult in order to grow up and take on life. It made me feel like a kid again. I was laughing one minute then creeped out the next all the while engaged never once getting bored. The more I think about IT the more I liked it, will be seeing again. Its big budget film making at its finest so ignore the minor issues and nitpickers and enjoy the show. Expand

Good:
- The Georgie scene was very well done. It might make you cry. - Dialogue - Though different from the book (there were MANY changes), the structure of the plot worked, even though it made the movie hard to be scary (too much Pennywise moments in short time). It could have been a pretty decent movie even without the clown in it. - Bill, Beverly, Eddie and Richie's character development was good (some others were sidelined unfortunately).
- The shift from the 50s to the 80s worked out well. It felt authentic. Also they left out all the sexual stuff from the book (Thank God, I was thinking at the end if that scene were in the movie, it would have gotten wierd). - Overall a good movie. Bad:
- CGI (very fake looking like the Conjuring 2's Crooked Man. It really reduces the scare factor). Also the shaking and quick movement was more ridiculous than scary. - Character development (Henry Bowers and Ben Hanscomb in particular). However as a group, the characters were alright. - Pacing - Lining up countless Pennywise scenes in a short amount of time. This is terrible pacing for a horror movie. No build up, just jumpscare after jumpscare after jumpscare. It got repetitive. The more you see the monster, the less scary it becomes. There were some standout moments though. It also was necessary to tell each loser's encounter with the clown but like I said, it got repetitive. I'll be generous and give it a 7 because reading the book always makes the movie harder to enjoy. I also have never hyped a movie up like this in years. I will enjoy it more the second time now that I know what changes were made and what to expect. This is a very SIMPLIFIED version of the kid's section of the massive book. They also intentionally left the mystery of It's origin and deadlights for the sequel.
