It Follows definitely draws some inspiration from classic horror films from the 1970's, most notably John Carpenter's Halloween. The soundtrack and cinematography really resemble that film. The soundtrack and cinematography really resemble that film. Despite drawing inspiration I thought the premise of the film was fairly original and the casting was well done. The young actors who were chosen did have some experiences in film in some good projects. The film really wasn't that scary though which I was disappointed by and I found the story kind of tampered off during the third act after an amazing second act, despite a few flaws I enjoyed It Follows and I'd love to see David Robert Mitchell at the helm for another horror film, lets see a Stephen King adaption next. I think he could handle it.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It Follows is one of the rare horror films with a great concept. As the film went on I expected that we would eventually delve into the mystery about who or what the "Follower" was and how it all began. But the film doesn't do that and as it nears the end you realize that's not important. You don't need to be told, you already know. What follows is sin, karma or whatever word you want to choose. It is our human failure personified from which you can try to run but it always catches up.

The film has a beautiful simplicity. It's horror comes from such common things like footsteps slowly advancing, knocks on the door, people approaching as you wait in fear that they might be after you. Since regular cinema so rarely manages to capture the world of mental illness it is left to horror movies to show the fear and trauma that can be part of everyday life. Just the damage that you can't escape.

The characters actually feel like real people, a crucial thing for any horror film. The main actress does a great job of portraying a person living in utter terror. Overall there is lots to recommend about this film, but it is, sadly, not without flaws. Parts of it feel slow and needlessly drawn out. Then there is some silliness towards the end when they try to fight the thing. Generally things are less scary when there is a group of people rather than just one individual against the killer/monster.

Basically, while it is still miles above the average jump-scare flick, with such potential the film could have been a lot better and it never managed to achieve those heights.… Expand

Legitimately scary and intense on both a tangible and intangible level, coming from someone who thinks the vast majority of horror movies are laughably bad. This is a director who understands how to keep you on your toes.

In light of recent glowing critical reception, I hate to parrot the same sentiment already spouted by many a pundit, but It Follows is without a doubt the best American horror film in many years. While the average cinema-goer will gripe aboutIn light of recent glowing critical reception, I hate to parrot the same sentiment already spouted by many a pundit, but It Follows is without a doubt the best American horror film in many years. While the average cinema-goer will gripe about the (seeming) lack of payoff or an under use of trademark jump-scares they feel are needed to constitute a 'horror' film, to the more discernible viewer, It Follows will surprise in it's restraint.

It Follows revolves around teenager Jay (scream-queen Maika Monroe) who, after having intercourse in a car one night, is cursed to be relentlessly pursued by what is easily one of the greatest concepts for a movie 'monster', period. The entity has no name, no true form, no ulterior motive other than to stalk and kill it's victim. It is an indefatigable predator, seemingly immortal, with it's only weakness being the leisure speed at which it pursues it's target. The hex can be passed on to others by having sex, but if that person is killed, 'It' will return to pursuing the last person it was following.

The thing that makes this concept so effective, so bone-chilling, is that the average viewer assumes the characters they are invested in are given the luxury of a solution to their problem far off in the horizon; that if they just strive hard enough, relief from their terror can be achieved. It is this common solace that It Follows denies it's audience. The fate of these characters is an undeniably brutal, almost cruel eventuality. The only peace It Follows affords is that it's characters can prolong their fate by fleeing from the monster, which is only a momentary solution that results in paranoia.

Cinematographer Mike Gioulakis frames It Follows using various wide-shots and long-takes, alloying the audience's gaze to wander through the images in search of our silent antagonist. This technique feels fresh in the realm of the horror, a genre frequented with flash-cuts and cluttered, withholding imagery. Everything is naked in It Follows, vulnerably so. An audience's desire to find an escape from the pursuing terror is preyed on deliciously here and, even if not every shot reveals the villain, it all contributes to an unrelenting anxiety.

Another technical accomplishment of equal laudability lies in the electronic score, reminiscent somewhat of artists like The Haxan Cloak or Pharmakon. Disastepeace crafts an 8-bit soundtrack with drastically polar influences like ambient and noise, making for obvious tonal contrast between scenes. He deals with timbres that feel John Carpenter-vintage, yet are tinged with modern clarity and even something of a pop sensibility. At times, I will admit, this OST feels out of place, almost dichotomous, particularly in the early goings on. However, it is so upfront, confident, and catchy, that it easily distinguishes itself as one of the most iconic original scores in recent memory, and one of the best ever for a film in the horror genre.

It Follows doesn't provide it's thespians with much depth of character, but it still manages to portray them as more than merely archetypal. Our heroes aren't very distinct or memorable, yet they don't feel disposable either, and they are never irritating or detestable. Maika Monroe and Keir Gilchrist bring just enough charm and grace to their roles to suggest that Mitchell's muted, minimal approach is more emotionally thoughtful than it leads on.

It Follows thankfully avoids proverbial horror-tropes in the temperament of his characters, steering clear of the typical trial of proving the existence of the pursuer to ignorant realists, but it also succumbs to the 'illogical-decisions-under-pressure' cliche. We get little to no appearance of any adult characters, nor any repercussions for the frequent destruction of property and resulting hospital visits.

Detrimental to the film's blistering build-up is it's final showdown with the unwavering antagonist. The plan enacted by the group of teens seems less than sensical, to put it gently. The scene also drags on longer than we'd like it to and displays some haphazard, unbelievable behavior Mitchell had thankfully avoided so far. Even though the denouement is meant to illustrate the futility of their resistance to this unstoppable evil, the battle is awkward, predictable, and reveals little about the monster that we didn't already know, and it ends somewhat confusingly (wait, it's still alive, right?).

The eloquent poem towards the end of the film reveals a surprisingly poignant theme, that the finality of death will persist, endlessly and we should not feign a solution to it. Rather, we should accept our fate and not falter or lead lives of dour defeatism. It's unreasonable to demand substance from most scare-flicks, yet Mitchell seems intent on finding a meaning to his lurid nightmare. Even better, what he draws is genuinely insightful and unforced, making It Follows a horror film to savor as much as it lingers in the shadows of our fatalistic phobias.… Expand

What is supposed to be an "homage" to classic teen slashers from the 1980's comes off as just a regurgitation of the cliches that made them so tedious to watch; overlong stalking sequences, blaring synthesizer score, etc. The principal characters in the film seem to be just supporting stereotypes for the plot to move on. The creature takes the shape of various supposedly-terrifying characters which all happen to be elderly people which is ineffective at best, ageist at worst. They do remake classic scenes from previous films *spoiler ahead* like the typical class lecture where the main character, drifting into daydream, is interrupted by a monster staring from outside the window, or that one scene where the characters break into an olympic swimming pool for the 'final fight.'

It's not too terrible. The film is way better than most of today's snore-fests...… Expand

Its virtues are not unlike those of "Gravity", they lie not in interesting characters and an elaborated plot, but mostly in subtle and cunning means by which a rather simple idea was realised.

Even if a concept of catching something mythical, unpredictable, utterly harmful and scary ( besides a venereal disease ) from an ordinary sexual intercourse seems more appropriate for a comedy, "It Follows" somehow carries it through without getting funny or stupid.

Certainly, there are some exaggerations, the most criticised pull-scene, for example - what they wanted exactly, to electrocute this thing with electric appliances? Why not use just a live wire instead? Why did they decide this will kill this thing and spare the girl? If it's not a ghost but a tangible body why not to think of some mechanical ways to destroy it, to smash it with a car, for example? If a towel thrown on this creature exposes its shape, why this thing stays completely invisible underwater, strange enough, isn't it?... There may be a long list of inconsistencies, actually, but what the movie lacks in logic it atones perfectly with style and atmosphere. A well-staged light, good photography, a rather good acting, many things make you take it seriously.

To speak about this shapeshifting stuff, which was also highly criticised, I don't consider it stupid, actually. When in a dream we look at something and then switch our attention out of it, the thing we were looking at firstly, starts changing its form and then it appears different but we know somehow that this is still the same thing and it's completely normal in a dream. But what is completely normal in a dream may be fully scary in a real life. I count this one as a good idea, maybe the best idea in the script.

"It Follows" is not what I'd call a deep intellectual movie, but it's surely subtle and ingenious, a good achievement.… Expand

Less a horror movie than it is a teen angst film. I liked the way it was filmed. I'm not quite sure what he had in mind, whether a cautionary tale about sex or simply a devilish game of tag? He leaves it a bit too open ended, as you can read virtually anything into it.

Supposedly, the story is based on an urban legend of invisible stalkers, but this is the type of fear many of us have felt, usually at a younger age, say eight or nine, where we take any outside noise as a possible intruder. I remember one such incident as a young kid when I had a friend over one night, and we were so sure someone was prowling around the house that we got knives from the kitchen and went out to challenge this lurking presence. My mom got up to see what the hell was going on, and almost made us sh... Well, you get the picture.

The problem with this film is that it doesn't go much further than its premise. It basically just follows Jay and her friends, who get sucked up into her nightmarish vision. I think it would have worked better if it just remained urban myth rather than tilting over into the supernatural, as Mitchell seemed more interested in the personal relationships anyway.

Nevertheless, it is worth watching just because it is not your usual teen schlock horror film. It's kind of a throwback to the late 70s and early 80s, sparing viewers all the blood and guts.… Expand

There are a few images in particular which left a very strong impression on me. Honestly, this was the first horror movie I've seen in quite a while which actually impeded my sleep. It is not without its issues, but I would recommend this movie to anyone who isn't diametrically opposed to horror films. Unlike The Babadook, which has been hyped beyond any reasonable expectation, It Follows proves that the genre is not flawed at its core, but in its general execution.… Expand

It's hard for horror films to overcome the irritating cliches, but here it manages to create a distinctive plot that I was terrified towards. The characters may be a little flat, but overall this was a fantastic piece of cinema.

While I don’t love this movie as much as the critics do, I would still recommend IF because of it’s highly original plot and subversion of the “sex = death” horror cliche (this time the characters MUST have sex to stay alive).

The plot is pretty simple, it (no pun intended) follows a young woman who is being followed by an unknown supernatural entity after a sexual encounter, but the true attraction here is the retro-atmosphere.

Director David Robert Mitchell obviously loves the 80’s, particularly the cinema of John Carpenter, which is ever present in the icy synthwave score composed by chiptune artist Disasterpeace. Heck, there is even a young Johnny Depp look-alike in this movie!!

Very methodical and minimalistic in it’s approach but always intriguing, IF is certainly a unique specimen that should not be missed.… Expand

I too would find it terrifying if I couldn't spend a single living moment relaxing. Some of scares are "false jumpscares" which is my first small negative. My second is that the movie sometimes breaks its own logic and rules that are set up by itself. At times it doesn't make sense at all (why is It standing on the roof?) and at one time it's a miracle that the main character is still alive. Speaking of character, I didn't find any of them interesting nor worth caring for. I didn't like the ending at all. All that being said, I can't deny that I was entertained for most of the runtime. I can completely see why people don't like this movie as well why people love it. Watch it if you like horror movies but don't be fooled by the 97% on RT (it's 8.1 in avg rating) and expect a masterpiece.… Expand

The movie is one of the rare good movies I've watched recently, with the tension it creates and the soundtrack. It is about the sexually inherited curse. The curse, on the other hand, occurs when the creature, who can take on various disguises, walks and kills it while focusing on the person carrying the curse. Also, if he kills the bearer of the last curse, he then targets the previous bearer.

What is very interesting about the movie is that it is timeless. Black and white movies watched at home and the girl reading kindle at that time. Availability of the latest model car alongside the 60 model car. Tube TVs etc.

The sexual transmission of the curse automatically makes the movie +18. But it's a different movie.

I think the boy who got the last curse transferred it to the prostitute.

Reminds me a bit of Denzel Washington's movie Fallen.… Expand

I'd like to see a parody of the movie where Jay's actually hideous and obese and none of the guys stick around to help her or offer to bone her.

"NAW I'M GOOD THX."

I think this movie was about pretty girl privilege more than anything. Most of us would've been thrown in a psychiatric hospital the first moment we started screaming about something that others couldn't see. Except for religious people of course.

But it is not clear to me whether, taken together, there is any there here. What is the point of all this? Why does sex (usually) pass the condition from one person to another? Why are people presumably buried still running around late in the film? What is the sigificance of the swimming pool full of blood? And what is the relevance of the passages from “The Idiot” that one of the characters keeps reading aloud? Something about separating the soul from the body? What motivates the stalker? Okay, maybe I’m being picky – this movie works well enough as entertainment, but I was expecting more sense. In the world of critically acclaimed thrillers, this is a big step down from “The Babadook.”… Expand

Is IT FOLLOWS the revisionist horror, critics want it to be? No. Actually, I think the great reviews hurt a film like IT FOLLOWS. It's a super little indie horror. The film borrows from other films especially the original HALLOWEEN and then yanks the rug from under you. What I found most interesting is that up until the past few years American teens were portrayed as fun-loving, drug and sex addicted crazies out for a good time. Now it's the 40+ that are fun loving.

In IT FOLLOWS, the teens are morose and sad. The middle class world they live in is no better than the horror of downtown Detroit. So many cool ideas. Amazing cinematography, nice perfs, and super music. I totally enjoyed myself, so what's missing?

A truly great horror that moves the genre forward needs to feel fresh and visceral. IT FOLLOWS is really terrific but far too intellectual to be visceral. Too much Cronenberg and Lynch to be stellar.

One last thing, the horror becomes menacing. Such a mistake. It would way cooler if "it" just followed you. Then you'd lose your mind.

And that's a great horror! Make me lose my mind.… Expand

Carrying an original premise makes the film one of a kind, but on the terms of jarring thrills it seemingly lacks focusing more on a sexual premise rather than horror elements. That being said the film is still horrifying, just not memorable.

This film does not deserve a 0 or a 1 at all, it's a good film. I'd recommend giving it a watch as the idea of this is really scary. There were a few cheesy moments but it's a horror film and it's to be expected.
6/10 from me, good stuff.

A popular critically acclaimed film "Get Out" managed to be an interesting entertaining film for those too that didn't find it scary. That's almost the case with "It Follows" too. It FollowsJust f*ck a fish and throw it in the water.

A popular critically acclaimed film "Get Out" managed to be an interesting entertaining film for those too that didn't find it scary. That's almost the case with "It Follows" too.

It Follows basically has a girl think that something is following her after a sexual encounter. Many other characters in the film also think about it and see it, and know that if it gets to you, it can kill you.

The film gets a lot of things right. It has a fantastic original soundtrack that manages to make many scenes unsettling, I've had it on repeat for a while now. The film barely uses any jumpscares and instead just lets you have a close view of the supposedly scary thing, which I thought was a nice way of trying something else and playing with the viewers expectations. Although the soundtrack sometimes was maybe a bit too loud compared to the dialogue and other sounds overall which made at least two scenes a bit obnoxious with the soundtrack getting louder when stuff starts to happen.

While the film was able to create a lot of tension, I didn't exactly find myself terrified at any point. I was interested in the story but I was never scared and didn't feel creeped out afterwards. But like I said, it's not a deal breaker with this one. I was constantly interested in seeing what's gonna happen with the characters and what the It thing overall is and what it resembles. The film is also very good with continuity. Many scenes pay a lot of attention to detail with people still walking or running in the background after many cuts. I also liked that the It can be seen already walking towards the characters even if it's not the main point of the scene yet for many seconds or even minutes. It was a very original way of creating tension, even though once again it wasn't exactly scary.

Although this also kinda makes absolutely no sense. The film is very serious about the rules of this It thing. The characters say that It starts following you after a sexual encounter with the person that It was following. But they also say that the It thing is very slow and can only walk. Well, why not just f*ck something very fast that's not human? They didn't say you can't do that. Or why don't you just go somewhere where It can't follow you? I'm sure you can live in a house without breakable windows because your life depends on it. Just use common sense!

I would still recommend this film to anyone that's even a bit interested in the story. It's not perfect since it's kinda dumb when you start thinking about it, and it has some ugly colors in some scenes even if they are a metaphor for something, bad acting from some of the cast and a straight up terrible ending which turned it in to more of an action movie. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It Follows is a pretty decent film for a low-budget indie movie. The film cost 2 million to make and that's about what you get. Is it a horror film capable of making you break out in a cold sweat and start panting or shrieking? Not really. Truth be told most people in my theater walked out a tad disappointed. The story had some pretty glaring logic holes (ever heard of a plane or a boat? The thing can't swim....) and inconsistent rules (walking at 2 mph, the thing should only be able to walk a maximum of 48 miles per day) but if you can suspend disbelief (and a lot of it) you'll find an entertaining, creepy film that ultimately is worth the price of admission. Go see it, but temper expectations.… Expand

"It Follows" has one the best, if not the best concept for a horror movie. The only problem with it, which is a very big problem, is that it simply isn't scary enough. I have seen many stupid horror flicks that have scared me more than this.

I had been meaning to watch It Follows for a couple of years now. I'd always heard good things about it and I figured it'd be a solid thriller because of that. Sure, but I didn't find the movie particularly enthralling. I wasn't bored, but I wasn't blown away, either. It just felt like another popcorn flick to me. The problem with the plot is that I don't feel scared at any point because the follower is so slow that my grandma with arthritis can escape from it. Also, I hated the scene where she suddenly becomes fast inside the pool for the script. Maybe it was over-anticipation that caused my disappointment, but there was nothing noteworthy about It Follows. It had a decent idea but failed to build on it, and it was suspense-free from my seat. The immediate threat to whoever 'it' was following at the time seemed lacklustre, although the overwhelming weight of the knowledge that something is after you was well conveyed by Maika Monroe.

It looked good and the acting was fine. I wish I had got a bit more out of it.… Expand

The film is based around an entity that will imitate anyone and try track down a certain person and kill them horrifically, and with this it brings a creepiness to the film knowing that this entity literally has no face, because it can have anyone’s face. However, once this has been established as what the film is about and that Jay (Maika Monroe) must pass the “curse” on – like some sort of really messed up STD – the film dilutes itself into a pool of averageness. There are not really any scenes that properly creeped me out, and to be honest there were too few scenes that actually tried to scare or creep you out. It felt like the gaps between each scare were too long, and they all ended up becoming formulaic in what happened.
The acting in this is also not that great, it’s just a bunch of twenty-something actors who never truly express any real emotion or fear, other than raising their voices and quieting them when they had to say something meaningful. Maika Monroe admittedly brings a reasonably good performance, but it’s nothing to rave about.
Some of the films composition of scenes along with its colour scheme make this film interesting, showing there was some care taken into the cinematography, but they are only evident once every so often in the film; as if the director was making a horror film that he knew wasn’t going to hold up by itself so just tried to make it a bit artsy. Sure the scenes can look quite cool, but a majority of the scenes in the film are just unnecessary cuts between characters and things to try keep the movie flowing, but instead just make it seem clunky in manoeuvring from one scene to another.
One thing I must compliment the film on is its score. It gives you that 1980’s horror vibe with the heavy synth and thundering drums that add to the films tone greatly, and make this film undeniably unique to most other horror films that come out nowadays. This film also stands out from the contemporary horror films being made as it – like The Babadook – does not rely completely on jump scares and more tries to creep you out; along with coming with its interesting score.
This film tries to jump on the vibrantly different horror band wagon like The Babadook and tries to show how horror does not have to be done so formulaically, but sadly does not succeed like how The Babadook did in 2014.
This film had a chance to be something genuinely astonishing but instead mingles with the other average horror films that plague the industry nowadays. Missable; not the hype the critics made it up to be.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'll give this movie credit where it is due first, before I delve into why I rated it so poorly average. For its credit, It Follows has some of the best soundtrack and filming I have experienced in a long time. The combination of both, along with the characters clothes, technology and atmosphere make it almost confusing (in a good way) to tell when it was filmed and what timeframe it is to be taking place. The music and setting made it seem like a classic 80's flick, very suspenseful and really ambiguous. And I like that a lot. The synth music, the older houses and homes; all of it made it seem like a well shot period piece... but then a character has a clamshell smartphone... from the future? I dunno. It wasn't scary, but this confusing timeframe really made it enjoyable to experience.

Additionally, I liked the premise. I will NOT, however, say it was original. Anyone that claims "no horror movie out there has something lurking to get you" is a moron. "yeah, but that it's walking, where ever you are, to come and get you dude" is still stupid. Virtually every horror has something coming for you. That might as well be the genre's subtitle. As for "slowly, from anywhere", that's pretty much why Jason Took Manhattan, and we all know, that doesn't equate to creative or a great movie. BUT, the whole "something is following me, I passed it to you" idea was refreshing enough.

Also, acting wise, I loved the cast. I see no harm there, for people I had never seen or heard of.

As for the downsides, I'll rate the hype as being the big killer for me. Not only the outside "oh this did great in Cali and NY and film festivals, now I'm lucky to get it in Lansing, Michigan!"... which worked, by the way... but also the hype. The most brutal murder, we don't even see, happens in the first ten minutes. And the corpse is glorious. So waiting an entire movie to see that happen at some point only to have it NOT EVER HAPPEN... really killed it for me. The closest we got was to watch a mom dry hump her son, supposedly to death... but again, I wouldn't know, because we don't see that.

Next, I liked the fact that no one sees "it" except the person it's coming after. But when you can throw a sheet on it and everyone can see it... it's invisible become a moot point. Likewise, shooting at it is bloody, and it falls... but later scenes, it's back. So I get the helpless aspect... but it just seemed like an unattainable and boring point to throw in.

Lastly, the "reveal" at the end; the last iteration of IT was her dad... that seems like they thought it should be clever, but with no backstory and no character building, it's not. Had I fallen asleep (possible), I would've missed the picture frame anyway. And I'd never know. But by this point, I didn't care anyway.

Lastly lastly, spoiler... the end plan wasn't going to work, even if things had gone to plan. You see the kids plugging electronics into SURGE PROTECTORS for godsake, in hopes to push them into the water and electrify things. So again, is this the early 80s, where no one knows what a surge protector PRTOECTS FROM?!

So I'm disappointed, from all the hype really, as it draw me in. The payoff was nonexistent. The movie went a long boring path to show you nothing. It had high hopes for being a game changer and artist/original. But anyone tells you that should be slapped int he face with a copy of Hellraiser or better.

Unless "It", in this case, is the lingering feeling that you've just been screwed outta $20... then in that case, it's very clever.… Expand

There was a point where it felt like the movie and I were going for a jog right after a well deserved break. I felt refreshed and ready to go but once you hit the midway point I began to feel like I had done this all before. The movie plays off of paranoia which fades quickly once it has ended however it still felt like there was some sort of voice growing louder from the other side of the screen. After clearing my ears from all of the nostalgia I could finally make out the words "remember when this cliché used to be cool" on loop for the remainder of the film. It then quickly turned from horror to thriller where the scares were non-existent but adrenaline was still going through me. The only thing which I can say was amazing about the film was the actors due to the realism being portrayed through them. Sadly everything else seemed like a cut out from a better movie. The pacing was confusing as I had to keep checking my watch to see if I hadn't zoned out for the last 10 minutes as I had felt like a coffee break whilst an entity who constantly follows you was out of place. The entity itself would have been creepy if I hadn't had been through something that is terrorising films since last year and that is the "new movie trailer". Now for the people that don't know the "new movie trailer" is when the person in charge of making a trailer for a movie is given the footage but is told not the watch it at all. They then put what ever they can fit in the 1-4 minute trailer without realising they ruined the movie's biggest spoiler. The trailer of "It Follows" shows every form of the entity besides from one that wasn't worth putting in anyway. In the end I would label "It Follows" as a thriller rather than a horror which was disappointing. I loved the plot and the characters however when a movie has so many rules to stick to which it made it self something is bound to go wrong. It was a one watch kind of movie due to it starting well but it went other a cliff after in the last act.… Expand

The soundtrack is amazing though! Also what seems weak is the story-line as in how it plays out; like for one the monster just being some random person you might love is interesting but not scary at all. I like the shot where "it" comes out at 1:41 (check trailer on YT) and i think if the monster took that form or maybe took forms of other people but when it took their form they were say mutated or human but still kinda not. Also the monster idea is amazing as most horror are generic but this isn't same as the monster its very creative, but the way they used the monster and how they showed "it" and how the characters and story plays out makes "it" not as terrifying but more interesting and eerie. It'd be cool if they made a sequel that had better writing,scripting,budget,actors,and a little more of everything (expect the soundtrack) than it probably be the best horror movie ever!!! i give this version a 5 out of 10. Disappointed that the ending lacked closure and the movie bypasses any mythos regarding the following creature and/or who it attacked. The jump scares and creepy atmosphere did not stay with me or "follow" me after having seen the movie which a good horror/thriller is capable of evoking.

As discussed the plot is the downfall and I personally wouldn't watch again although there are glimpses of strong filmmaking. Perhaps the director’s next film will be an improvement.… Expand

This movie reads like a PSA against teenage sexuality. Except the sexuality is minimal, and the consequences are bizarre attempts at symbolism. This movie is banal and tries so hard to be artsy it loses all credibility. It takes place in a great setting of desolate Detroit yet the setting is only a disconnected backdrop for the not so wild adventures of kids. Stereotypical characters the desirable blonde, the Nice Guy best best friend, the quirky female best friend, the cool older guy who graduated but hasn't really ever matured past high school. The main characters are all extremely static, which makes the movie static. STD's and teenage sex is bad we get it. If that wasn't the point of this movie then this movie is utterly and unforgivably without purpose. Not to mention, the ending is atrocious. Horror movies usually characters with vivid back stories that give context to present events, but you won't find that here. This movie is so over hyped. It also has more brains than most witless demonic horror films of the last five-ish years, ever since the popularity of Paranormal Activity suggested to filmmakers that all you need to do is shake a camera and have something go thud before an actor in prosthetic make-up screams at the camera.

However, what It Follows lacks is a decent story. Maika Monroe's competent performance doesn't disguise the lacklustre character she's been given to play, nor the unoriginal and sometimes laughable dialogue. In fact, the film's tension is diffused on several occasions by some unintentional - or perhaps just poorly constructed - comedy.

It may be one of the better horror films to arrive of late, but that's hardly a challenge.… Expand

It's worst failure is that it is 2 hours long. Half of that could have been cut down if every single scene didn't have some extended pointless camera span.

I've given it a 4 because the concept isn't bad, it was executed extremely poorly in this movie. If anything this film should be used to scare teenagers about STD's in school. That sounds weird but that is the concept of this movie. You might sleep with someone and catch something you can't get rid of.

Don't expect to be scared in this movie. Don't expect any kind of logical conclusion. Don't expect any closure. Enjoy the actually 30 minutes of real horror in this 2 hour snooze fest.… Expand

The Good:
#1 The movie doesn't rely on blowing you ears off with "jump scares". It "mostly" creates tension while you can see what's going on instead of building the sound and then jumping on your face.
#2 The First half. The intro, the theme exposition and the first tense moments are all good.

The bad: Everything else
#1 The contradictions
a. IT can only walk slow but can tackle, jump through windows, climb to the roof of a house (while the target was outside loading the car)
b. They open the movie with a girl calling her dad on the CELL phone but then put a lot of effort into showing you the movie is set decades ago. Old B/W TV's, Old clocks, old cars (most of the time). The main character even has a land-line phone on her room. No one else has a cell phone except the useless filler friend who uses a blush kit as a cell phone .Her cell phone is really a Oyster shaped makeup kit (really common) and she covers the bottom part all the time. But you can see her "reading" from it and "swiping".
c. To avoid IT from killing me, let me pass it to my Friend so it tries to kill him. :/
d. Abandoned building (or at least deteriorated heavily) with electricity and an amazing pool in pristine condition.

2. It kills by having sex? On that subject, If A passes it to B why does killing B makes it go back to A? and if they all have it why show NO interest on the guy that passed it to her?

3. The final solution is to pass it to another friend before passing it along. So if that 3rd party dies, your friend would die as a warning for you to start running again? Better options

After seeing its sky-high metascore, I eagerly grabbed a ticket for this, and it was quite a letdown.

It just doesn't fly, at least for anyone with an IQ over 100 let's say? Obviously this movie is in a way an homage to such modern classics as "Halloween" and "Friday The 13th", except
those movies worked so well at the time because they were based in reality while still being about as scary as you could get. Homicidal maniacs exist, and however over-the-top those characters became in the sequels, at least originally the scenarios were possible.
The story here is the typical half-baked script that would use as its argument that it is all metaphor and that it's really about the underlying themes. Sorry, that's never enough. First comes a good involving story that can stand on its own, then comes the hidden symbolism and the themes which should be left to interpretation by the viewer.
Take "The Shining", a great Stephen King story first and foremost, then amplified by Kubrick's cinematic genius and open to myriad interpretations. Supernatural, but on one level you could look at it simply as a man with cabin fever.
"It Follows" suffers from a murky not fully realized premise to begin with leaving the experience an empty, unbelievable exercise in technique. Also to note, it is one of the few major theatrical releases in about the last ten years whose image was obviously shot on video. With almost all movies now you cannot tell the difference.… Expand

One of my best friends and I went to see it while he was in town for a day because it not only looked like the best of what was out, but rotten tomatoes praised it. With very few parts that were even remotely on the scary side,(being a horror fan) that was pretty disappointing. By, the end of the movie it was one of the first times I've ever wanted a refund (not that I would ever ask) and somebody from the upper part of the theater behind me yelled out in disappointment as well and also mentioned rotten tomatoes. It is slow paced and as with most horror movies had many just plain stupid and easily avoidable situations. The characters just seemed cliched(not such a surprise, as many movies borrow from others) as far as I.Q.s under 100 and casually not believing anything that was transpiring. The only plus was that the idea of the movie was somewhat original. I do stress somewhat. Then, in the blink of an eye, it ended in the type of way you ask yourself "Seriously? What the hell did I just watch?"… Expand

Or show up in the hospital with gun shot wounds for that matter? The writer makes up the rules to his game of tag as he goes along. I hate movies that don’t follow their own bible. Create any world you want but give me the logic that makes ‘it’ work. What we are left with is enough footage for a very cool and effective two minute public service message for STDs- a la Reefer Madness. This Rocky Herpes Show makes Babadook look like The Exorcist. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After reading the reviews, my brother and I decided to go check this out earlier today and were both extremely disappointed. The movie just drags on for what seems like forever after an admittedly intriguing opening, only to devolve into shots that go on for way, WAY too long that focus on nothing of real significance, little is explained as to what "it" is, why "it" follows, why "it" is at times unable to open a door, which "it" then resorts to breaking windows, then is able to hurl large electronics into a swimming pool and take on a completely different level of physicality that makes you question what the hell it's actually capable of. That's how a lot of the movie is: something is vaguely eluded to and you think you know the 'rules', because as an audience, we're being told a story and we want to feel like we have a personal stake in the film, feel a little immersion, etcetera. But little to nothing is ever explained. Characters are just not interesting. Jay's sister seems to be there to be a shoulder to cry on in close ups when things "get crazy" and doesn't really have an arc to her story at all. There's another girl with glasses and a "shell phone" in the group that provides almost nothing other than famous quotes delivered in a monotonous, pretentious tone of voice during low points, just to keep it's floundering head above water in hopes that the audience will put up with just a little more punishment.

There is some good here, though. The lead actress, Maika Monroe, is genuinely great. She's convincing when she needs to be and most importantly, does a fantastic job acting terrified, confused and worn down. The cinematography is beautiful, showcasing the various suburbs, beaches, vacant buildings, worn down houses and schools with some artistic flair, wide shots that are awesome to look at and the sound design is great as well.

The score is alright, but songs are repeated to the point of ad nauseum and I think he's trying too hard to be John Carpenter. But to wrap this all up and to maybe paint a better picture of what I'm trying to say, let's talk about Halloween, a film I've seen some reviewers compare this to. You have the character of Michael Myers, who for the most part is a mute, slow-moving stalker of teens, much like the "it" of this film. The reason Michael works and this doesn't is because everything about him is laid out by Dr. Loomis. You have exposition to explain what he is, what makes him tick, he had a legitimate purpose and goal. Jason of the Friday the 13th movies is the same: we the audience know his motivation. Those movies aren't about the teens, they're about the monsters. But it's a monster we identify with. "It Follows" is like this: we like the 1980s, let's get some old televisions with classic monster movies on them, older cars for this never fully defined time period because what the hell, that's pretty cool. Get some teens having sex in here because that's what Craven and Carpenter and Romero would have done, right? But get this...what if I was so original as to come up with the idea that our "Michael Myers" is transmitted from kid to kid like an STD?! Except it isn't always the same guy and nobody can see him unless you have it. Oh, and nobody ever knows what it is and I'll never say because it's better for the audience to just come to their own conclusions about the scraps of information I've fed them, sparsely, over a 2 hour time span. I mean, Kubrick never had to explain "The Shining", right? I can be Kubrick.

there is no "LOGIC" in this movie even cheapest horror movies have an acceptable storyline and logic which raises some questions and answers them at the end ! who/what is the evil/monster? what does it do?why? how to defeat it? and ...

"it"cant open the door but can break windows and doors and throw heavy objects at you in a pool!what a horrible and tough way to kill btw.
"it" cant run fast but can swim faster than a shark!
"it" couldn`t die with one head-shot from point blank but hey 2 shots do the trick !!
nobody can see "it" but those who are infected and those with blankets really!?
you may pass "it" to someone else with sex?maybe maybe not!it depends on the quality of the sex i suppose!?
"its slow but not dumb" "don`t let it touches you" so what its gonna do? grab and pull your hair to death!?

as i was watching this which was not even near scary i was thinking what will be the ending?how could we link all this ... **** follows would be a better title IMHO

characters are horrible i`m not even going to talk about it ! acts are ok for an indie movie i mean
camera was average and soundtrack was goodish but didn`t help the movie a bit...

here is my advise on recent horror movies:

you wanna watch a decent psychological horror movie go for "The Babadook" .you like blood scenes and mystery "The Oculus" could be nice! hell you want the action horror craps go for "Paranormal Activity" but this is a waste of time and money!(for those who pay) and looking at the IMDb, rotten and metacrititc scores i gotta tell you the truth folks, people are getting dumber all over the world!… Expand

Don't let the rampantly positive reviews fool you - this is basically just another horror film where a bunch of white suburban teens get into trouble because of sex. It Follows is a smugly self-satisfied monster flick that I suspect works best on audience members who have never actually /dealt/ with the themes its trying to tackle, like terminal illness, rape, stalkers, etc. The film attempts to be subtle but suffers a great deal from inconsistency, over explaining itself in some places and leaving things inexplicably ambiguous in others. And in the end it's got a plotline you could lift from nearly any monster movie, as the creature is defeated (or IS IT?) and the Unlucky Everydude saves the pretty girl. My only hope is that the critical success of this movie will open the door to more daring efforts in the fields of cerebral horror and monster flicks.… Expand

I have no idea why so many critics have gone on record saying this film is haunting, chilling, terrifying, etc. Their opinions about the film are much more haunting to me than anything in the film (except maybe all that stuff about evil, scary, deadly sex.)

But dinner before the movie was great. Really good mac and cheese! And my husband and I had a fun date. So all was not lost. Still, here's hoping for a movie with a real story for our next movie date!… Expand

Please do not believe they hype, nor the critics, perhaps you will enjoy the movie if you go in with extremely low expectations unlike the sky-high expectations I had going in (because of the rave critic reviews).

I jumped once on a good old loud bang transition sound. I was checking my watch constantly to give the film a chance to scare me, when the final scene happened I literally didn't know what to do. I was shocked that the film finished and I felt it never reached a climax. I gave this a rating of 2 because the work that was put in behind the scenes (low budget effort, albeit crappy and overhyped).

Go into the film expecting to be disappointed and maybe, just maybe you'll enjoy it. I wish the high reviews would just stop, it really isn't scary at all, or interesting or mysterious.… Expand

1. "it" (henceforth: It) could break a window, kick thru a door, and punch someone feet thru the air, but apparently had to sometimes gently knock on it's intended victim's door
2. It apparently could only walk slowly. But at one point It lunged at a victim with great speed, and another time threw heavy objects with great force.
3. You could send It to another person by having sex with that person. Why didn't the very first girl victim do that?
4. Assuming Jay had sex with 3 guys on boat, why didn't It go for them? Or why weren't we told they got killed?
5. Given Jay's 1st sex guy passed It to her, why could he still see It and why was he still afraid of It? He was off the hook as long as Jay was alive right?
6. Given they shot one It and It got right back up, why would they try to shoot the It in the pool?
7. Why would a pool in a derelict public swimming facility be full of crystal clear water and fully lit? And how did they get in?
8. Why would Jay, in mortal terror running from It, drive to an isolated spot in the woods and sleep curled up on the hood overnight? Really?? Where was It then? She was ripe for the picking'...
9. So let me get this right, only the afflicted could "see" It, but as long as you threw a blanket over it, everyone could see the outline? Didn't anyone see "Gilligan's Island"? Throw paint on it!
10. Even the most independent kid would run to an adult (parent, police, etc.) when in this sort of trouble. I mean, come on!

After a seemingly innocent sexual encounter, nineteen-year-old Jay finds herself plagued by strange visions and the inescapable sense that someone, something, is following her. Faced with this burden, Jay and her friends must find a way to escape the horrors that seem to be only a few steps behind.

Now, i was eagerly anticipating this film after hearing nothing but good things... it turned out to be the worst horror I've seen in quite a while. Lets start with the hipster retro worship on display. Despite being set present day, it indulges itself in gas guzzling vehicles, teens watching 50s sci-fi on antenna television sets, directed through a grainy 70s filter and a john carpenter inspired 80s synth soundtrack. Since when did paying homage to your favourite directors or playing with genre tropes become the be all and end all of a successful horror film? Did the director forget he's out of film school and he needs to bring originality to the table?

Moving on, the horror element was basically 'followers' randomly changing one second to the next, with no explanation of why their appearance was that way. Sometimes it's an old man following her, a half naked woman peeing herself, a child looking like a rotting corpse. I'm sure the boyfriend said "It will come to you in the form of someone you were fond of" or whatever, so who the hell are these random folk?

Logic seems to have been abandoned throughout the film. Ridiculous decisions made by nearly every character, in nearly every other scene. She runs to and sits on a swing out in the open, IN THE DARK, which is SAFE now for some reason? There's open space all around you, does she have eyes in the back of her head? Later she takes the car and abandons her friends for something like the third time, and sleeps on the bonet. AT NIGHT. IN THE FOREST.

Jay and friend catch up with the dude who cursed her but no beatdown or argument just "yeah, sleep with someone to pass it on and you'll be fine" which turns out to be wrong advice anyway so...? For some reason all the boys are lining up to take the curse off her, why? And she's happy to go along with it all showing no concern for these friends.

Why is a naked follower standing on the roof? How did he get on the roof? He should be going through the front door and up the stairs to Jay's room like earlier on in the film!

SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME AGAIN WHY THESE TEENS ARE WATCHING 1950S B-MOVIES ON AN 80S TELEVISION SET!?

I sensed many people in the screening with me were shaking their heads and laughing, especially at the ending, there was a collective reaction of, "is that it?" There are some great female led horror films in the past few years that show intelligence and originality without the need of bombarding the senses with retro ideas we've seen over and over again. It Follows? More like **** Follows!… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It you have seen the Trailer or read any of the glowing accolades there are no possible spoilers left. But, for the sake of sparing those who have remained objective about the return of body horror I will check the appropriate box. It Follows has a beautifully stunning aesthetic that recalls the photography of Gregory Crewdson's Twilight (surreal suburban imagery) or the cinematography from Les Revenants (The Returned) where everything is shot in a crepuscular glow. But, if we were to combine urban legends about waking up and finding "welcome to the wonderful world of AIDS" scrawled on your mirror after a one-night stand with the curse from either version of the Ring you would have It Follows. An interesting premise that sounds preposterous when you can sum it up as a "sexually transmitted curse." Although the movie does not rely on jump scares or soundtrack manipulation it does not employ character development or dialogue either. Also the slowly walking dead who are invisible to anyone not initiated into the sex curse are easy to evade despite being relentless and perpetually changing appearance, so suspense builds only when the audience can see the murderous zombies walking up behind her and the main character is otherwise distracted. We witness her slowly unraveling as she struggles to save herself by passing the curse on to others, if the ethical dilemma had been more pronounced maybe it would have generated suspense but because she eventually does doom her younger sister's crush and a boat of horny boys only to find that the zombies still seek her out because these others have already been killed. Still, the only thing I find remarkable about the movie is the level of disconnect between adults and the teenagers, the media seems unfazed by the initial rape, the inexplicable and violent death of teenagers and that a group of friends are breaking into a pool with a series of electronic devices. It is supposed to have a nightmarish surreal quality but in a world where are consequences are suspended it is hard to fear whatever it is that follows.… Expand

I didn't like this movie too much. It was slow-paced, and only the idea of it was creepy. Although, despite the realistic teenage look the movie was going for, I would have liked for it to show a bit of history on the topic and them trying to figure out the problem like other movies such as The Nightmare On Elm Street.
Because even though it was realistic and how it would have been handled IRL, I would have liked to know some personal information behind it all rather than it being very vague and confusing and ending abruptly.
That's just my opinion, you could give it a shot but it wasn't that great for me.… Expand

Why don't we start off with the main character, shes a whore she sleeps with 3 men in the same movie and this is in a span of like 5 days! But that's ok right? Wrong, it's like the movie try's to be bad I mean like the beginning is so slow, wait scratch that the whole **** movie is. I didn't really understand the whole movie to be honest, they had a lot of **** that they wasn't necessary like at the beginning because the girl got her leg bent backwards, but when the ghost got the other dude all that happened was he got raped and died, this **** doesn't make any sense the movie breaks its own rules, an example of this **** is almost the whole **** movie. The ghost is suppose to be slow and only walk, well it shows the main character n friends driving a lot and I mean a lot. You would think that at least out of one of their driving sequences one of them would be a road trip maybe a couple of hours away. But guess what? The ghost shows up in a matter of hours, now unless the movie had a time skip or something then the ghost shouldn't have been able to make it there in a couple of hours. But even if they did have a time skip we were never informed of this they could have been like (A couple of days later or some **** like that) but no there was nothing .The plot is really weak honestly, its about a slut who catches a ghost kinda like a one way STD and if the ghost touches you I guess (I don't really know since the movie doesn't follow its own rules) then you die? yeah it likes to change the rules. Also, why didn't she just take an air plane far away then **** some random dude, it could have been solved so easy but they had to make all this bull **** I can tell you the whole movie with a couple of sentences wanna hear? Alright, Main Char ****s a dude, then she see's a ghost, she runs away from the ghost, ghosts follows her and breaks something, try's to solve it, can't, ****s another guy then repeat this one more time and you have the whole movie right there. Don't believe me? Then why don't you go watch it for yourself because I'm being 100% honest to walahi swear to god that that's all that happens with a few little minor tweaks. I also feel that the character development was weak. All her friends were the stupidest bunch ever and they didn't do much except sit on their lazy ass or they were sleeping. The middle of the movie was just plain boring and there was little to no suspense at all no rising action what so ever just run away from the ghost. The ending of the movie was the stupidest part though. Even after the main char tried to shoot the ghosts face off they decide it would be a good idea to hide in a ONE ENTRANCE AND EXIT POOL! HAHAHAHA what dumb asses, anyways... They put electrical things like toasters and hair dryers around the pool then they put the main char in the pool, My guess is as good as yours that they were trying to kill the ghost in the pool after the girl gets out, and do you think that works? Of course not you dingus, The ghost isn't a retard it doesn't **** around dog it just picks up the **** and starts throwing it at the main char. This is when the dumb ass shoots their friend trying to shoot the ghost that he can't see, buddie please tell me what exactly you're trying to accomplish? I'll just make it quick cause I wanna get to the ending. They put a blanket on the ghost, Point blank it, ghost falls in water, main char swims away from it (another time the movie breaks it's own rules (ghost catches up with the main char swimming as fast as possible)), guy shoots ghost trying to drown main char ghost dies?, main char see's blood in the pool. Great, Perfect, Happy end, NOTTT!!! lets just say it like this. The girl ****s for the third time now THIRD TIME so that guy has the ghost, then he drives past 2 hookers (not sure what he does quite honestly there was never any hint or clue that he ****ed them just drove past) then main char and **** are walking down a side walk you can see someone following them in the distance (The rape ghost) thus ending the movie. Please no squeal. Do i recommend it? NO. Is it scary? NO. I am ashamed of this disgrace of a movie and i want my 1 hour and 40 mins back, your worst enemy's don't deserve this torture. So if you can, Please please please stay away from this movie.

I have no idea what's going on here. I normally love psychological horror, The Shining is one of my favorites of all time, but this... The premise is so stupid it actually makes me angry. That's the only feeling this film evokes in me.

The lack of real explanation or a single light in the tunnel of the screenplay, in which case we can make at least theories, made the film a failure. Points I give for some good jump scares and for the try at all. I'm a horror movie fan, having seen stuff from masterpieces to Z-list movies and enjoying many on the whole spectrum. I love "Rosemary's Baby" as much as "Braindead". I'm saying this because I've heard that "It Follows" is a movie for horrorI'm a horror movie fan, having seen stuff from masterpieces to Z-list movies and enjoying many on the whole spectrum. I love "Rosemary's Baby" as much as "Braindead". I'm saying this because I've heard that "It Follows" is a movie for horror connoisseurs or whatever - which I find very hard to believe. I started watching "It Follows" with high expectations ("horror flick of the year", anyone?) and ended watching it being just mindblowingly bored. Sure, I wasn't expecting the next Zulawski's "Possession", but I was hoping for a good, enjoyable film - good as a movie and good as a horror. I was waiting for the movie to start, but it never really did - just teenagers waiting and long shots of nothing, presumably allowing the viewer to masturbate with the (admittedly) atmospheric scenery, mixed with bad acting and bad pacing - which resulted in no tension at all, or even moderate interest on my part. Tackling of the main "moral" theme was pretty shallow. Scares weren't there at all. If you really love the retro vibe, well, it's there and it's nice, but certainly not strong enough to carry the whole movie! Neither me nor my companion enjoyed it. Overall, if you need a relatively new movie about an "infectious" curse, see the Japanese "The Ring". If you need an atmospheric slow burner, see the Japanese "Dark Water", "Babadook" or the Korean "Tale of Two Sisters". If you don't need the "horror" element at all, but like a slow, atmospheric mystery, see the classic "Picnic at Hanging Rock". If you need a lot of scare - truth be told, even the last, regurgitated parts of the "Paranormal Activity" franchise gave me more creeps. Dear movie fan reading this, see anything else literally, unless the 80s aesthetic is a major turn on for you. It's overrated.… Expand

After a long time, I watched a horror movie which had poor plot, poor acting and poor horror. This is the worst ''horror'' movie a have ever seen. Is super boring. I saw this one with the girl that I am dating, and both of us were like almost sleeping. There are not really horror parts. Okay, so the creature itself? Seems okay when you describe it until you see how it goes for it's victims. Easily the most nonsensical premise for a horror movie creature, and yet the film takes itself so seriously. Not to mention we have noOkay, so the creature itself? Not to mention we have no backstory to the darn thing. It's just... a thing. Be scared now. Really, the plot is nonsensical, and it ruins the whole thing. It Follows is an awful movie. Review after review proclaim this movie as the best horror film in years. I viewed this movie with my teenage son and we were both underwhelmed to say the least. I read all of the reviews and fell hook,line,and sinker. I HAD to see this movie. It Follows was the"gamechanger", an experience that would haunt you for days after. What a joke. The only thing I'm haunted by is wasting 25 dollars and 2 hours of my time on this crappy movie. Should have went straight to dvd.… Expand

The abstinence only videos I had to watch back in high school were scarier than this movie. No plot and a bunch of empty tropes. Made me laugh a few times so there was that. I opened this account (and one on Rotten Tomatoes) just to give this movie a bad review. It was not original, it was not scary, it was not creepy; all it did was make me angry that we paid $18 to see it. The lack of continuity about the era drove me crazy(was this the 80's, cause I lived then and I think not - those pools and power strips weren't around then) as did the complete lack of explanation about what "it" was. The idiot characters in the movie never even tried to find out what "it" was or how to defeat it. The whole idea of passing "it" on to someone else to get rid of "it" was ludicrous. As soon as that person is killed "it" comes back to you - what would the point be in giving "it" to someone else???? Now "it" is going to come back to you sometime in the future so you live in a constant state of anxiety waiting for "it". Just let "it" kill you already and put us all out of your misery.… Expand

When i first stumbled across the trailer for this film, I wasn't too excited about it. It came across as something that had been done before without giving any detail what so ever. The first seen was probably the best part of the movie. It was fresh and exciting and had me completely pumped for what i was about to experience. This was the last bit of horror however. There were a few moments that had me on edge but they were quickly overthrown by something that didn't add up. Nothing at all is revealed about the thing that "follows" and that disapoints me. After the movie was over, I found myself thinking "that's it?" I don't understand how this movie got rave reviews. It wasn't a horror movie. It wasn't a suspense movie. I honestly don't know what to classify this movie as. The only reason I am rating this movie as a 1 is thanks to the first scene.… Expand

By far one of the stupidest movies ever conceived. The characters are not believable, the acting is amateurish (at best) and the plot is just downright stupid. Never have I come across a flimsy and terribly written movie so obscenely glorified as this one. The plot of a relentless manifestation of a curse (in this case a paranormal, sexually transmitted disease - I really kid you not) has been doneNever have I come across a flimsy and terribly written movie so obscenely glorified as this one. The plot of a relentless manifestation of a curse (in this case a paranormal, sexually transmitted disease - I really kid you not) has been done with proper pacing and a decent framework in many movies such as Ju-on and Ring.

This one? Hey, it tries to be very very different. Nothing is working? Fear not. Throw in gratuitous amount of sex and slime (quite literally), lumbering naked prostitutes with thighs streaming with fresh urine and a generous display of nudity, more nudity ... and then some more doses of it, all in the name of a slow-paced remains of a sad train-wreck that made no sense when it started and ended on an even more convoluted note.

I would love to know the sensibilities of critics that consider this a terrifying movie, as the only thing I was terrified of was to not shame myself in front of my friends by controlling my violently churning stomach at the death scene of the protagonist's friend, and incidentally, one-time playmate. But alas, it is so different and so cool that it obviously deserves the skyrocketing score, nevermind the lack of pacing, direction or the actual narrative. Who cares? It's different, folks. It's different!

All in all, It Follows follows a lot of banal plot devices, it just fails to follow anything meaningful.… Expand

It is not some dumb coming of age story it is supposed to be a freaky/scary horror movie. While it created some tension, most opportunities were wasted and not followed up by anything remotely scary. I wasn't remotely frightened at any point. There are some parts that don't belong and seem as if it was accidentally put in and forgot about by the director. The 30 extra seconds tacked onto every scene was unnecessary and made me physically frustrated as I felt a 10 year old boy with disabilities would know not to put in. The movie could not establish a time period to save it's life as it jumped from old tv's and black and white shows to a 2007 Ford Explorer. The one special effect in the movie looked as if it was from sharknado and belongs on syfy. I don't know what movie many other reviewers watched as apposed to what movie I watched but it wasn't good and I recommend to not waste your money on it. It was a terrible movie and the trailers were highly misleading as to how scary it would actually be. I felt bad wasting 6 dollars on it, none the less movie theater price. So if you want unnecessary elderly nudity and nonsensical writing, look no further than this movie. I'd also like to add why people should take this review seriously and to that I would say that I made an account just to share my feelings about this movie. I feel as if good movies that are reviewed poorly deserve more of a chance than this terrible movie. I bring your attention to one of my favorite movies Nightcrawler and the fact that this piece of garbage had a higher score on metacritic. I'm sorry but in a movie that had me laughing at how bad it was, I wonder if the people reviewed the movie well even watched it.… Expand

Plotless pointless empty nothing movie. I am now convinced that critics are bought off. I would understand if all the critics are 13 years old but I assume they are not. I trusted you MetaCritic and you failed me horribly. If I could figure out how to give this movie a negative rating I would, if only to save some people from spending a minute of their lives on this film. The best thing about this movie was leaving.

I feel like trolls are creating bot programs to create accounts on Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes just for the sole purpose of giving It Follows good reviews. Why would I say this? BECAUSE THAT MOVIE WAS GOD AWFUL IN EVERY WAY!!!! BECAUSE THAT MOVIE WAS GOD AWFUL IN EVERY WAY!!!! The acting was atrocious especially by the lead, the characters were absolutely droll, the plot was like a 5 y/o scribbling on a map and had more holes than a wiffle ball, and the scare factor was nonexistent or at the very least INSANELY predictable. It wasn't even a good homage to old slasher movies. That and the underlying theme of "sex kills" is just disgusting, but I guess it's something the youth pastors can use... All in all this felt more like a "serious spoof", if there could be such a thing, and I only finished because I enjoyed laughing at it's horrid existence.… Expand
