Like it or lump it, Rebel Wilson is endearing in a way. I went with my girlfriend to see this and found a few laughs here and there. It's not groundbreaking but I thought it was fun and somewhat enjoyable.

The film is a homage to the genre of, at least, the past 30 months including "Notting Hill", "Love Actually" and starting off with the theme song "Pretty Woman" sung by Roy Orbison only we are in New York City instead of Beverly Hills. Along the way you will see Rebel Wilson dressed in the famous white dress suit and, oh yes, that red dress! There is a karaoke salute to "My Best Friend's Wedding" and a dance scene in Central Park!

From watching a young Natalie (Alex Kis) being told by her mother that there is no happy ending for girls like her we segue into adult Natalie (Rebel Wilson), an architect, working into work where we meet various co-workers who treat her indifferently or worse. We also meet her co-workers like Josh (Adam Devine) who is also her BFF along with Whitney (Betty Gilpin) her assistant, addicted to watching romantic-comedies while working. Along the way we meet the mandatory next door gay sidekick Donny (Brandon Scott Jones), the must-have hunk potential lover Blake (Liam Hemsworth) not to forget the beautiful model Isabella (Priyanka Chopra) who may, or may not, steal the true love Natalie is destined for (and if you follow the genre you know who that is!)

The premise is Natalie being robbed and knocking herself out running away only to wake up in a Hollywood version of life, especially in romantic comedies. Manhattan changes from a dirty, smelly, ugly city to one that is freshly washed and scrubbed with flowers on fire escapes, street curbs and picture ready for Martha or Oprhey's magazines. We are now in a romantic Hollywood comedy and all that goes with that, including lessons learned. There is a segment filmed at Park Avenue and East 40th Street that is absolutely sparkling--Hollywood magic? :O)

"Isn't It Romantic?", because of all the cliches, follows the rules but here we have a different type of heroine and Rebel Wilson grounds the negative aspects by being a woman not swayed by the glamour of her surroundings. I did not see her "Pitch Perfect" movies so this was a, more or less, introduction and she has a powerhouse voice.

Though not a must-see movie "Isn't It Romantic" is a fun movie that doesn't overstay its welcome in a fast moving 90 minutes.… Expand

And, while it does a fairly successful job at doing this overall, none of the jokes themselves really dive deeper than the ones showcased in film's the trailer, leaving me feeling just a little disappointed. Beyond this, you're given a narrative that's about as predictable as they come and a bunch of scenes that actually -- and unironically -- uphold several other undiscussed romantic comedy tropes. These things aside, though, Rebel Wilson certainly keeps you in your seat, and the film's tone overall is just quirky enough to make you feel like you're watching something different. It's certainly not the searing satire it thinks it is, but it is worthy of a watch.… Expand

You have to give the writers of “Isn’t it Romantic” some credit. It takes courage to offer several minutes of exposition early on about the flaws of romantic comedy and then go out and make a rom-com. Fortunately, the story by actor-turned-writer Erin Cardillo, co-written with Dana Fox and Katie Silberman, doesn’t take itself too seriously, totally willing to be self-referential, self-aware and even self-deprecating.

The set-up is more than a little formulaic. Natalie (Rebel Wilson) collides with a girder after fighting off a purse-snatcher, knocking herself out and causing her to wake up in a parallel universe. The resulting hallucination provides her with a gorgeous new apartment, a compliant pet, a sexless dalliance with Liam Hemsworth (whose saxophone playing in the closing credits is priceless) and a stand-off with a supermodel over the man she loves. Plotting is not the strong point here. Along the way, there is madness, mayhem and more than a few laughs. Soon after waking up at the hospital, Natalie is informed that her clothes have been destroyed. The staff “puts together a few things,” and she walks out in a dress, hat and handbag identical to Julia Roberts’ iconic “Pretty Woman” wardrobe. When offered a ride to a weekend party in the Hamptons, she says, “You had me at hello-copter.” Natalie even launches into a profanity-laced tirade, only to have her offending words bleeped by a truck on the bridge overhead: “My life has become a motherf…[bleep] romantic comedy, and it’s rated PG.” When the world returns to normal, this merriment is capped off with Natalie’s rapturous exclamation, “New York is a **** again!” Perhaps most interesting of all is the catfight between Natalie and billboard model Isabella (Priyanka Chopra, Bollywood actress and Miss World 2000) over Josh (Adam DeVine, reprising his role as Wilson’s love interest from the first two “Pitch Perfect” installments). Their karaoke stand-off is completely over the top and thoroughly inspired. The plot doesn’t resolve as planned, with Natalie even offering a few hopeful observations about the merits of self-worth. You can almost hear the Stones singing: “You can’t always get what you want… But if you try sometime, you find you get what you need.”

“Isn’t It Romantic” opened to outsized expectations and stranger-than-fiction real-life parallels. After shooting for the movie concluded, Chopra married Nick Jonas and Hemsworth tied the knot with Miley Cyrus. This doesn’t mean that “Isn’t It Romantic” is the “Citizen Kane” of romantic comedies. But it is a clever, fun self-aware film, with a few laugh-out-loud moments, that navigates a formulaic landscape with a knowing wink and a nod.… Expand

It's a really short movie (and that's TOTALLY fine by me) and it's really fun. It's nowhere close to the movies to which it aspires and pays tribute (like Noting Hill, etc.), but I laughed my ass off. Definitely a good time on Valentine's Day.

This was an adorable, sweet, silly movie like the old Doris Day/Rock Hudson movies, except it was almost a musical which we found very entertaining. This movie was cute, fantasy entertainment, nothing more. We loved seeing the usual antics from Rebel Wilson and Adam DeVine, but also seeing Liam Hemsworth being funny for once, and hearing his Australian accept for a change. Priyanka Chopra, Betty Gilpin and Brandon Scott Jones were all VERY funny in their over-the-top roles. All in all, it was a very enjoyable film like a throwback to the past G-rated romantic comedy movies. You can tell the actors enjoyed making this film, and we enjoyed watching it.… Expand

It's not a bad romantic comedy but let's say I was not really in the mood and Rebel Wilson has always seemed to me, a mediocre actress and that for my part doesn't help but maybe fans of the genre will find it more rewarding.

Things move along pleasantly enough, but the script takes little advantage of Wilson's natural comic abilities or maybe…she's better in a supporting role where her intense style can be leavened by others. I don't usually watch rom-coms, but this one's a bit different. It's a rom-com that pokes fun at rom-coms and is deliberately aware of that. Acting is good with everyone doing their part. The humour is a bit cringe worthy at times, but also so self aware that you can't help laugh out loud.

It's funny how a movie can place itself on such a massive pedestal when it comes to judging and criticising romantic movies, but by the end it became the thing it was criticising.

While I really liked the idea of the movie as it was fresh and different, I did find some jokes a bit dumb and at some parts a bit unfunny. Overall was decent and definitely better than generic romantic movie/comedy.

I like romantic comedies, though I absolutely share the Rebel Wilson character's issues with the genre. This was a sweet, funny romantic comedy that made me laugh a fair amount. It's pretty silly, but it's a good time.

First of all, all the actors and actresses did give it they're all in their roles especially the ones who had to play the cliched characters. But, and I don’t mean this in any mean way, I just couldn’t see Rebel Wilson as the leadingFirst of all, all the actors and actresses did give it they're all in their roles especially the ones who had to play the cliched characters. But, and I don’t mean this in any mean way, I just couldn’t see Rebel Wilson as the leading character in this movie. I have seen her be funny in the Pitch Perfect movies but in this role, it didn’t seem like she was giving it her all. In some of the scenes, it seemed like she was just phoning it in while her scene partner was actually trying to give it they're all. Now I’m not a RomCom expert because I hate them but I still know famous lines from those movies and this film was full of them. When the writers need to steal from other movies for dialogue you know you are in trouble. When they aren’t poking fun at a RomCom cliche they are just ripping off a better movie. Like I said in the opening sentence this film does have a good message in it but it takes so long to get to it. Now, this would be fine if the audience didn’t already figure out what it was going to be at the beginning of the film. From the opening scene, you could easily figure out what the message was going to be. One thing that I want explained is if this film is supposed to pointing out the cliches of a romance film why did they at the same time give in to them? Finally, this is supposed to be a romantic comedy but there was a lot of romance and not enough comedy. There were jokes that some of the audience members laughed at but for a majority of the film, a lot of the jokes fell flat. In the end, this is a good date night film and for people who actually like RomComs. If you are either single or don’t like RomComs you could also see this just to make fun at it like I did.… Expand

I was a big fan of director Todd Strauss-Schulman's Final Girls, a comedy about a group of people sucked into the world of a horror movie. (If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it.) So when I heard he was doing a similar movie, in whichI was a big fan of director Todd Strauss-Schulman's Final Girls, a comedy about a group of people sucked into the world of a horror movie. (If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it.) So when I heard he was doing a similar movie, in which Rebel Wilson's character hates romantic comedies and finds herself in one after hitting her head, I was very curious. Unfortunately, the director couldn't strike twice. Though it has its moments, I found Isn't it Romantic to be an underwhelming experience.

The film does have it's funny, including some good-natured jabs at the romantic comedy genre, or heartfelt parts. The director and others were definitely trying. However, as a whole the thing doesn't come quite together. It feels like the script could have gone through another revision. The jokes and story just feel a little low-energy. This is one of those movies where it's especially sad because it feels like it comes close to a truly good film, but just misses the mark.

Pacing is a concern. The setup goes on too long, Rebel's character trying to wrap her head around the world takes too long, and guess how short or long the ending was?

Rebel's Wilson's performance is lacking. She excels at outrageous/outgoing comedy. However, here she plays more of a straight lead. It's the same issue I think she had with her short-lived television show, she doesn't quite know how to play it straight and is a little wooden. In fairness, direction may have had a hand in this. Adam Devine and Liam Hemsworth are the romantic interests, and though usually fun guys, they aren't quite as entertaining as usual.

On the other hand, Brandon Scott James does a great job as the movie world's dated stereotypical gay best friend. Glow's Betty Gilpin isn't in this much but she does pretty good double duty as Rebel's best friend in the real world and a completely different character in the movie world that I won't spoil. Her change in performance and appearance is so strong that it took me a minute to recognize her.

Like I said, the director was trying and it definitely shows in the appearance of this film. This is is a romanticized borderline perfect world and it shows. Super colorful; the lighting kind of look like it belongs to 80's on-location TV shows. A lot of detail; extras are constantly seeing doing little things in the background. There are a couple of decent musical numbers, too.

Now when I said this didn't work for me, I admit I may be biased. I'm not a big romantic comedy person. I think that Love Actually is one of the best romantic comedies because of the coldly rational reason that the shorter divided story-lines deletes the risk of drawing things out and boredom. Still, I do think there are much better romantic comedies than this.… Expand

I want to be involved in anything film related so damn bad! The 5.9 rating is really unfortunate though seriously deserves at least a 7.4… Expand

Conocemos a Natalie, miembro de una empresa de arquitectura, intentando hacer su lugar en la firma pero su falta de confianza la detiene. Otro de los retos de la protagonista es poder hacer lugar para el amor, pero nuevamente es ella misma quien se cierra a toda oportunidad... hasta que en un accidente se ve en una realidad que funciona como romcom y debe buscar la forma de salir.
Aunque parezca innovadora no es la primer cinta que tiene esta propuesta, aunque lo que la hace única es que lo lleva a un extremo que uno puede hallar algo nuevo en el concepto.
Lo malo es que como comedia no tiene mucha gracia, hay una que otra humorada que funciona pero nada atrapante. Sin mencionar los personajes secundarios, a excepción de Adam DeVine, son tan pocos carismáticos que se llega a un punto en que no tienen importancia en la historia.
Esta propuesta es interesante pero no termina de convencer, "Isn't is Romantic" es aceptable, se esfuerza en innovar pero no logra funcionar. Es una buena propuesta para pasar el rato pero no puedo terminar de recomendarla.… Expand

¿No es Romántico? es un quiero pero no puedo, intentar hacer una sátira de las películas de amor con todos sus cliches, pero no acabando de finalizar bien la ejecución, no es mala película pero está lejos de ser entretenida y capaz. I enjoyed Isn't It Romantic despite its obsessive use of the curse word beeping. It's a romantic comedy that's a parody of a romantic comedy. The comedy made me laugh.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. With Isn’t It Romantic this past week and The Hustle coming out soon, Rebel Wilson is having a moment. If you can white knuckle it through the gags from all the trailers, the movie moves into the meat of the premise fairly quickly, and plants the seeds to a lot of jokes that eventually grow later: the gay best friend jokes are mostly meh until his monologue at the end, as are the references to Rebel Wilson’s plans for the parking lot and her presentation at the end. The musical numbers are fabulous–not surprising considering she and Adam hail from musical comedy royalty. Moments like the “maybe we should swap” joke are deadpan and perfectly timed. The film, at barely 90 minutes long, is tight and lean in its take down of the genre, unlike some bloated comedies I can think of. The music is boppy and fun. The double-turn when she returns joyously to her crappy life is clever and well-earned.

IIR is the story of a slow-burn satire that ripens with age, but also a cautionary tale for missed opportunities and shallow romance, despite being about criticizing movies about shallow romances. It won’t ultimately stand the test of time, Wife suggests, because it leans too heavily on critiquing the tropes of its genre without building a story of its own (“it exists as commentary”), which I think is right. Also, because Heather Schwedel is right when she says that Liam Hemsworth is significantly worse than Chris. To the point that Wife suggested he think about pursuing another line of work just so that he can avoid being compared to someone who looks so similar and does the job so much better (ditto, James Franco, Dave).

Isn’t It Romantic is not be memorable, but it’s not asking for too much. Rather than bemoaning what could have been if it had spent more time trying to put together some meaningful relationships before twisting them into the fun house version of themselves, enjoy what you’ve been given and reserve judgement after we’ve seen the totality of this year’s arc.… Expand
